The purpose of this document is to follow up with “How to install a Silver Peak VX-Xpress on VMware ESXi”.

How to perform basic configuration on a fresh installation of VX-Xpress. The chosen Setup is in Router

Mode, because I do not want to interrupt other scenarios by placing VX-Xpress In-Line.

To better understand my test lab, I’ve added a slightly modified scenario to support that Silver Peak point-

to-point configuration.

After you have successfully added the VX-Xpress onto VMWare system and started up the appliance, you

should start with the initial configuration.

To discover MGMT0’s IP address, enter the following:

silverpeak-ed4663# show interfaces mgmt0 [ENTER]

The console displays the MGMT0 IP address and netmask. This IP Address (192.168.10.4) has been given by

DHCP.

NOTE: To get to the login prompt from this point, enter q for quit, or hit the spacebar to continue paging

through the returned information.

As I want to use a static IP Address, I’m going to configure via CLI

In my drawing there are following values being assigned

• MGMT0 = 192.168.10.85/24

• Default gateway is 192.168.10.81

To configure MGMT0, enter the following command sequence:

silverpeak-ed4663# config t

silverpeak-ed4663 (config)# interface mgmt0 shutdown

silverpeak-ed4663 (config)# no interface mgmt0 dhcp

silverpeak-ed4663 (config)# interface mgmt0 ip address 10.0.47.142 /24

silverpeak-ed4663 (config)# no interface mgmt0 shutdown

silverpeak-ed4663 (config)# ip default-gateway 10.0.47.110

silverpeak-ed4663 (config)# show interfaces mgmt0

silverpeak-ed4663 (config)# show ip default-gateway

Change the Time Zone, add NTP Server or select Manual Settings. I prefer NTP Server, because of

Network Management, Logging and Reporting

Select Router ( Out-of-Path) Deployment, because we only want specific traffic going through the tunnel.

This can be accomplished by:

a) WCCP if you have a router or other device, like PacketShaper which supports that feature

b) Configure a Client’s default Gateway address to point to Silver Peak

c) Policy based Routing, would be another choice

That’s pretty much everything to set up the appliance for basic acceleration.
