NEW DELHI, Dec 3:
Congress today said JusticeKurian Joseph's remarks afterdemitting office have proved itsallegations against theGovernment of interference inthe highest levels of judiciary,and demanded separate parlia-mentary and judicial inquiriesinto the matter.
The opposition party madethe allegation of interference cit-ing the retired Supreme Courtjudge's sensational claim afterdemitting office that the previ-ous Chief Justice of India DipakMisra was working under someinfluence of an "externalsource".
Justice Joseph, however,refused to elaborate on who theexternal source was and the
cases where there was a bias andadministration of justice affect-ed.
Congress spokespersonAbhishek Manu Singhvi, at apress conference, claimed thegrave apprehensions of his partyover "interference" in the high-est levels of the judiciary havebeen proved by Justice Joseph'sremarks.
"No less than a SupremeCourt judge who demitted officea couple of days ago... Hasexpressly articulated the gravethreat to India's highest judicialinstitution," Singhvi said.
"Justice Joseph has in clearand unequivocal terms talked ofthe arbitrary bench selection,external influences, by implica-tion remote controls, and politi-cal biases injected into the sys-
tem by the Government of India,by the ruling party," he alleged.
There was no immediatereaction from the Governmentor the BJP to the allegations.
The Congress was not con-cerned about how the judicialorgan looks at such thingsbecause it was fully competentto deal with it, but it was con-cerned about the accountabilityowed by the Government,Singhvi said.
The Congress, therefore,demands a response from PrimeMinister Narendra Modi,Singhvi said.
It has become clear that theModi Government was using theCJI as its puppet, Congress chiefspokesperson RandeepSurjewala alleged in a tweet.
Singhvi said, "The nationrightfully wants to know the truenature, the true extent, thedegree and the subject matter ofthe interference of theGovernment. We further con-demn this unconstitutional,invasive and illegal effort by theGovernment." (PTI)
