WHAT’S IT LIKE THERE?WVU is located in Morgantown, West Virginia, a small city that CollegeRanker named in their “50 Best College Towns to Live in Forever” list, at #24. The American Institute for Economic Research ranked Morgantown #18 on their list of “Best College Towns in America,” and WVU and Morgantown earned a “Safe Communities” accreditation by the National Safety Council.

Learn more about your future home at tourmorgantown.com and get a feel for campus before you visit at tour.wvu.edu. Check us out on Instagram at westvirginiau to see how much Mountaineers love their home.

Learn your way around before you get here. Go to campusmap.wvu.edu to use our online interactive map.

WHAT SHOULD I DO WHEN I’M THERE?As much as possible! Have fun during your visit:

Take a ride on the PRT (Personal Rapid Transit), our electronic people-mover.

Grab some Mountaineer gear at the WVU Bookstore.

Check out a Mountaineers or Black Bears baseball game at the Monongalia County Ballpark.

Stroll, cycle or rollerblade along the rail trail that runs beside the Monongahela River.

Walk downtown to one of over 30 restaurants to fill your craving for Thai, Middle Eastern, Italian or Mexican food.

Browse the galleries at the Creative Arts Center or the new WVU Art Museum.

3 VISIT CAMPUS – TRY US ON.HOW DO I VISIT CAMPUS?If you haven’t already been here, it’s a great idea for you and your family to visit before Transfer Academy. Through the Visitors Center you can learn about admissions, costs and campus life

and discover Morgantown — one of the nation’s best small cities. You can even talk with faculty or sit in on a class. (No quizzes. We promise.) If you want to meet a specific department representative or attend a class, just ask when you make your reservation.

Tours are offered twice daily, Monday-Saturday (admissions presentation is not available on Saturdays). A tour just for transfer students is offered every Friday at 10 a.m. This tour does not stop at a residence hall or dining facility. WVU also hosts open house events throughout the year. admissions.wvu.edu/visit

MORGANTOWN REALLY IS ALMOST HEAVEN. YOU CAN FIND MORE PHOTOS LIKE THIS FROM OUR STUDENTS ON INSTAGRAM (WESTVIRGINIAU).

4 5FIND AND APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS – FUND YOUR FUTURE.AM I ELIGIBLE? WVU awarded nearly $48 million in grants and scholarships last year. The minimum scholarship eligibility requirements for transfer students are:

3.0 cumulative GPA and 30 hours

Student must have earned between 15 and 78 post-high school transferable credit hours

HOW DO I GET A WVU SCHOLARSHIP? You are already being considered — all you had to do was apply to WVU. Students who’ve completed the admissions process by the February 1 scholarship deadline receive priority consideration for WVU scholarships.

WHAT KINDS OF SCHOLARSHIPS DOES WVU OFFER? Transfer scholarships are available to students who submit their transfer admission application to WVU by July 1.

Transfer scholarships range in value from $1,000 per year up to $2,000 per year for West Virginia resident students and from $2,500 per year to $5,000 per year for non-residents. Students who have at least a 3.0 transfer GPA and a minimum of 15 transferable hours/maximum of 78 transferable hours to WVU are eligible for consideration.

Scholarship award letters are usually sent out in early spring. For students transferring to WVU during a spring semester, the same GPA and hours requirements exist, but the deadline to apply for admission is November 15.

Other scholarships are available within your department. You also should investigate private scholarship sources to help fund your education.

FILE THE FAFSA – THE FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID.WHAT IS THE FAFSA? File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Depending on your FAFSA results,

you may qualify for grants, loans and/or work-study. Some scholarships require submission of the FAFSA to determine financial need.

WHEN DO I FILE THE FAFSA? The FAFSA is available October 1. Submit your FAFSA before March 1 for priority consideration of all aid programs. However, the earlier you file, the better! We will begin sending financial aid award offers to admitted students with a FAFSA on file as early as December, on a rolling basis.

HOW DO I FILE THE FAFSA? Gather your family’s income information.

Access the FAFSA at fafsa.gov beginning October 1.

The FAFSA school code for WVU’s Morgantown campus

is 003827.

WHAT TYPES OF FINANCIAL AID ARE THERE?In addition to scholarships, there are three types:

Grants – typically need-based, these awards do not need to be paid back.

Loans – money you and/or your family borrows, which must be repaid.

Work-study – you will apply for a job on or off campus that allows you to work around your class schedule and earn funds throughout the academic year.

Use the Net Price Calculator to project your eligibility for federal and state financial aid programs and see the actual cost of attending WVU: financialaid.wvu.edu/net-price-calculator.

HOW MUCH IS TUITION?See tuition.wvu.edu.

QUESTIONS?Email us at [email protected] or call 304-293-1WVU (1988).

6APPLY FOR HOUSING — FIND YOUR NEW HOME.Apply for on-campus housing if you are transferring with fewer than 29 hours. If you are entering WVU with 29 or more hours, you may choose from University Apartments and other off-campus housing. Directions

for both options are given at admissions.wvu.edu/admitted/transfer-students.

WHAT IF I HAVE MORE THAN 29 HOURS?If you are transferring with 29 hours or more, you can live off-campus or in one of our four on-campus apartment complexes. WVU has four great places to call home — University Place, University Park, College Park and Vandalia Hall — and all offer luxury living close to campus. Choosing to live in a University Apartment has lots of benefits:

Individual leases

Roommate matching available

Independent living, so you have the freedom of an off-campus lifestyle

Option to pay your rent through your student account

Open year-round, so you won’t have to leave during breaks

University owned and operated, so your requests, concerns and questions are answered quickly and thoroughly universityapartments.wvu.edu

WHAT IF I AM TRANSFERRING WITH FEWER THAN 29 HOURS?Whatever you need, you’ll find it in on-campus living: 13 residence halls. Dining halls all over campus so you’ll never be hungry. A rec center where you can play, swim, work out and conquer a 50-foot climbing wall. And Living-Learning Communities of people who share your interests.

HOW DO I GET THERE? Pay your academic deposit if applicable.

Wait 48 hours and log on to portal.wvu.edu to complete the housing application.

Submit the housing deposit.

Select your top-three residence hall choices.

An assigned date will be sent to your MIX email address (keep checking!), based on when we receive your housing deposit.

Joining the WVU Honors College is like moving into a friendly neighborhood where your new friends talk about the coolest, most interesting things. They get your jokes and can discuss philosophy or fandom. Everyone always asks “why?” and “how?” — and is determined to be the first to find the answers. As part of a close-knit community, you’ll get special perks like priority registration for specialized, smaller classes taught by passionate instructors. Opportunities to participate in exciting research. The chance to study abroad and benefit from a vast network of connections for internships. An Honors College adviser to guide you. And the chance to live in the Honors Hall or an Honors Living-Learning community, where you are immersed in Honors life 24/7.

Any student who is transferring to WVU having earned between 14 and 34 credit hours and a 3.7 cumulative GPA without an I or W on their transcript can apply to the Honors College.

Transfer students will also need to submit transcripts directly to the Honors Office from all collegiate institutions they have attended; only Honors credit from other National Collegiate Honors Council member institutions will be honored.  honors.wvu.edu

STUDENT INSURANCEAll WVU students must be covered by health insurance. You will be enrolled automatically and billed for WVU’s Aetna student health insurance plan when your fees are assessed.

If you already are covered on a health insurance plan (like your parents’) you can opt out of the Aetna plan and avoid the fee by submitting a health insurance waiver form. You will need to complete this waiver every year. studentinsurance.wvu.edu

AND AFTER ALL THAT...Some more important tasks to complete before your arrival.

IMMUNIZATIONSAnd speaking of health issues, all first-time freshmen and transfer students must have the following immunizations before arriving on campus:

MMR

Meningococcal Vaccine

Polio

Tetanus

Hepatitis B

The following immunizations are recommended before arriving:

Varicella Vaccine (chicken pox)

Tuberculosis screening

Hepatitis A

HPV Vaccine

Pneumovax

Influenza shot

Students enrolled in healthcare majors may be required to have additional immunizations. studentinsurance.wvu.edu/immunizations

ALCOHOL EDUCATION COURSEAll new students must complete the AlcoholEdu course — even if you’ve taken it at your previous school. It’s an online, non-opinionated, science-based course, and whether you drink or not, it will empower you to make well-informed decisions about alcohol and help you deal with the drinking behavior of your peers. You’ll be notified when you can log on. well.wvu.edu/alcoholedu

TRANSIT FINANCIAL WELLNESS COURSENew, incoming students need to complete this course – it’s no secret that financial decisions made in college can cause stress and even affect the rest of your life. Transit will empower you to make well-informed financial decisions and help prevent negative financial behaviors. You’ll be notified before you come to campus when you can take Transit. financialaid.wvu.edu/resource/financial-planning

FOREIGN LANGUAGE EXAMDoes your major require you to take a foreign language? Or would you just like to learn one? If you’ve taken Spanish, French or German and would like to continue studying that language at WVU, you must take the foreign language placement exam.

First, check the Undergraduate Catalog to see if your major requires a foreign language (catalog.wvu.edu). If it does, go to worldlang.wvu.edu/pExams to take the exam.

MATH AND CHEMISTRY PLACEMENT EXAM (ALEKS)Because we want to make sure you are placed into math and chemistry courses where you will succeed, we base placement on successful completion of prerequisite courses or on placement scores (ACT math score, SAT math score or scores on the ALEKS Math Assessment). ALEKS is an assessment tool. We recommend that you take the ALEKS Math Assessment online, before you meet with your academic adviser.math.wvu.edu/placement

GO ON AN ADVENTUREAfter taking placement exams and getting your health details together, why not go on an adventure? Adventure WV includes many opportunities. During pre-college trips and programs you’ll meet other students, make friends and get great advice from people who’ve been in your shoes (or hiking boots).

Trips are customized for transfer students.

In Adventure Transfers you will learn about WVU programs and campus life and meet other transfer students while exploring West Virginia’s natural beauty. Adventure Transfers is open to all transfer students, regardless of acquired credit hours.

Earn college credit and learn more about yourself. Most students pay $95. If you are Pell Grant-eligible, your cost is $0. adventurewv.wvu.edu
