No, it’s not Stu’s 45th birthday! In fact Stu attended a special celebration with a number of other honoured school employees who were acknowledged for their long term service to the Department of Education.
This year sees Stu celebrating 45 years as a teacher in the State system. You can see him pictured here receiving his certificate acknowledging this milestone from the Minister of Education, James Merlino.
Congratulations to Stu for 45 fantastic years (so far!) we are very grateful that you have spent the majority of these years at RPS!

Money, Money, Money! This term, the Grade 1/2 students are exploring money. The students have been learning skills such as recognising, describing and ordering Australian coins according to their value. They are practising counting and ordering coins and notes using concrete resources. They are loving using the plastic coins and notes. It has been great to see the students make connections between skip counting and using money by counting by 5s, 10s, 20s and 50s. In the next few weeks, the students will be making their own supermarket, allocating prices and spending their ‘own’ money. Tips for helping your child at home: Talk about money when you are at the shops Practise grouping like coins, e.g. making
piles of 5 twenty cents and 10 ten cents Practise laying out dollars, e.g. putting
coins together to make a dollar Use strategies such as counting the
dollars first, then the left-over coins Show your child how to use subtotals on
paper when counting large numbers of coins
Improving Maths skills In grade 1/2
Subtraction
This term, the students have continued to focus on subtraction. The students have been participating in Number Talks that focus on their mental strategies. At the beginning of a lesson, the teachers provide the students with a number sentence such as 45 - 23 = and ask the students to articulate the strategy that they have used to solve it. Fantastic subtraction mental strategies include:
Counting on Counting back Split strategy Jump strategy Doubles/Halves
This is a great simple but powerful activity that you can try at home! Ask your child’s teacher if you require any clarification. Happy spending and subtracting, The Grade 1/2 Teachers Simon, Lucie, Todd, Tammy and Peter
