CONGRATULATIONS TO ANDRES ZEPEDA

How I will use the Scholarship There is no doubt that every applicant would use the scholarship for their own benefit, as I will. Although I believe I should be the recipient of the scholarship because receiving the scholarship would greatly help me get into college. You could even say that receiving this scholarship is my ticket into college since ow income runs in my family so paying off college would not be an easy task and I cannot afford to go in debt. If I were to obtain the scholarship, I would apply to get into Cerritos College and enter their automotive technology program. Once I’ve been enrolled into the class, I would make headway to become an Automotive Engineer.

Remembering President Bill Lowe

On March 6th 2020, we lost our President Bill Lowe. Bill loved Studebakers for many years. He restored his 57 Silver Hawk. It was a beautiful example of a Studebaker Hawk. Bill could talk Studebakers all day long. He also loved leading the Chapter to new heights. He worked tirelessly on improvements which helped the Chapter cut costs. Not many Chapter members knew that Bill was also a great cook. He worked for years as a Chef in Los Angeles. Bill also served as Vice-President for the Chapter for 2 years. He was easy going and loved the voices of Studebaker lovers wherever he went. Bill will be missed and will always be in our hearts as a truly nice person who loved Studebakers. ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

When Gene and I joined the BCOIE Studebaker club I was as aware of Bill Lowe as I was with all member. I had worked La Palma where Bill would check on the registration station process to determine if there were any needs. But It was at the Palm Springs Zone Meet Bill was the coordinator of the “Hospitality Room” that our friendship was formed. I got to know a caring and friendly guy who had a dry since of humor or one that I bounced off quite easily. He became my friend that weekend. Almost a year ago, now there was Bill at the Fourth of July Celebration and how I thought the conversation about MZE being the editor of the newsletter was more joking that serious. Then, I said, “All joking aside I will become the editor”. I remember Bill’s comment:” I was not joking. You are the editor”. What would he have done should I have said, “No, not this time!” I will never know. Like everyone I was sadden when he announced that the mass in his body was serious. I miss Bill and his friendship. I am glad for the few memories I have with Bill. Jan 5

UPDATE NEWS FOR THE WEBSITE. As of this month the Ray-Lin Classic Automobile Restoration Studebaker website is a part of our website.

Raymond Fichthorn the creator of the website has retired and planned on removing the website from the internet. After Don Scott

contacted Raymond Fichthern, Raymond agreed to donate the contents of his website to our Chapter. The website was copied and

rebuilt the Ray-Lin Classic Automobile Restoration website to fit our format. It is important to note that Studebaker owners will

always have a place to find Tech Support for their cars.

Carson Highschool Automotive

High school is a time of many firsts and lasts. One can argue that high school is a time to learn practical skills, but others

argue it is a time to improve one’s life skills. At Carson High School, in South Los Angeles, students are given the

opportunity to grow and prepare for the real world. In Mr. Roach’s Auto Shop class, students are not only taught about cars

and their inner workings, but they are also taught about how to be leaders, work in groups, as well as being open to other

people’s opinions.

At Carson High School, Mr. Roach has been able to teach his students practical and technical skills. Mr. Roach’s classroom

is a garage filled with disemboweled engines and disassembled cars. Currently, Intermediate students are working on a 2-

door 1947 Studebaker Champion and a 4-door, 1947 Studebaker Champion. When the students received the first

Studebaker, they were informed that it hadn't run since 1975. The students assessed the vehicle and checked the major

systems (lubrication, fuel delivery, cooling, ignition, charging and starting systems). In addition, with the fabrication skills

and resourcefulness they learned from Mr. Roach, they were able to adapt a 1960's Ford seat and weld in brackets to install

in the 2-door Champion. Currently, they are working on making new metal fuel lines and fabricating an exhaust system

from surplus parts.

The 4-door Champion was given as a shell. Students took a salvaged, donated engine and converted it to a front sump oil

system. They were able to re-gasket the engine and adjusted the valve train. Future plans include tearing down a rusted 3-

speed overdrive transmission and work on the engine bay.

Above we have Andres and Benjamin, working on the 4-door Studebaker transmission. After inspecting the transmission,

they found the transmission was frozen and not shifting properly. They first attempted using a lubricant to loosen moving

Page 8: CONGRATULATIONS TO ANDRES May_2020.pdf · Not many Chapter members knew that Bill was also a great cook. He worked for years as a Chef in Los Angeles. Bill also served as Vice-President

parts. Their first attempt did not fix the transmission. After another set of diagnostics, students decided the best plan was to

break down the transmission and thoroughly clean and remove rust from the transmission and inspect all the bearings,

bushings, shafts and gears.

Above: Mr. Roach helping students identify a rusted and clogged fuel line on the 2-door 1947 Studebaker. After evaluating

the fuel line, a clog was found. Students determined that the plan of action was to remove and replace fuel line from the

vehicle.

Students learn and practice the multi-step process of making

double flare connections for steel lines which include brake and

fuel lines. Over many decades, these lines can corrode internally

and lead to failure.

George is shaping the new fuel line to manufacturers specifications.

His new line must match the original in order to fit correctly under

the vehicle.

Page 9: CONGRATULATIONS TO ANDRES May_2020.pdf · Not many Chapter members knew that Bill was also a great cook. He worked for years as a Chef in Los Angeles. Bill also served as Vice-President

Students installing their new fuel line. Original attachment

points must be used to secure the lines and avoid

unwanted contact with other moving parts.

After replacing the fuel line, the 2-door 1947 Studebaker, was running. Next on the list is fabricating an exhaust system.

Students will cut, weld and piece together a functional system from remnants of past projects or donations.

The 1947 2-door Studebaker is nearing completion. A small leak was discovered at the master cylinder. A rebuild kit is on

order to reseal this key component of the braking system. In addition, a fresh set of tires will also be needed soon. Safety is

the number one priority, and old, dry-rotted tires are a serious hazard. Once the major systems have been repaired and

checked out, the students will move on to body and paint.

In education, a student’s level of thinking is based on Bloom’s Taxonomy. Often, we are taught only to use the lower levels

of thinking, for example, memorization. However, many times, memorization alone is not enough, for STEM subjects,

creativity, analyzation and evaluation is needed.

The Auto Shop I introductory class teaches predominantly 9th grade students the rudimentary concepts that future drivers

will need. Some of these include purchasing, insuring and budgeting for a vehicle. Students also learn about what to look

for when selecting a quality automotive repair facility. Key automotive functions such as fluid checks, electrical systems,

fuel systems and cooling systems are also introduced.

Shop safety is also a major focus in the intro class. Safety awareness is a critical skill for those students who wish to

continue their training and enroll in the Auto Shop II class.

In Mr. Roach’s intermediate class, students are taught to analyze information and apply it in a hands-on environment. In

education, this approach is called Project Based Learning. Mr. Roach uses Project Based Learning to help his students’

Page 10: CONGRATULATIONS TO ANDRES May_2020.pdf · Not many Chapter members knew that Bill was also a great cook. He worked for years as a Chef in Los Angeles. Bill also served as Vice-President

creativity be at the forefront of their education. Mr. Roach believes that “the problem solving, and confidence building that

occurs through these activities/challenges, impacts the students’ learning in other classes.”

Students also find Project Based Learning interesting. When surveyed, all but one said that they enjoyed this class. Mr.

Roach has created an interactive learning environment where students are taught more than just about cars. This is evident

as students come in on Saturday mornings to continue their work on their projects. Every other Saturday around 8:00 a.m.,

Mr. Roach and his students continue their work.

An educator’s job goes far beyond teaching from a textbook. In large parts, being an educator is more about being a mentor

than a teacher. These students see Mr. Roach as a father figure. His genuine interest in his students and their future is seen

in his everyday conversations with them. Mr. Roach’s goal is to prepare his students for whatever endeavors they might

pursue. In fact, Carson High School alumni visit him to talk about cars just as much as they do to talk about their future.

Mr. Roach has taught his students valuable skills that they can use for the rest of their lives. When surveyed, students said

they learned how to work in teams, leadership skills, organizational skills, research skills as well as communication skills.

In particular, Andres, a student from Mr. Roach’s 6th period said, “I learned how to be dedicated by getting a project started

and not giving up no matter the difficulty.” High school is an important time in everyone’s life and programs like this are

essential to letting students express themselves in a technical and hands-on environment.

The immediate future of this class is uncertain. At the start of every school year, Mr. Roach goes to his campus mailbox to

see if the automotive program will live to see another year. The annual budget for the class from the school is $200 per

school year. With the help of your donations, this program will continue to provide students a quality education as well as

an ability to learn applicable skills in college or in the real world.

To help fund the Auto Shop class, please contact the Boys and Girls Club of Carson,

Attention Don Abbe.

What Junk Do You Have in Your Garage or Backyard?

As you recall at the Studebaker Meeting in February there was a discussion and I think a

vote to donate car parts to the Carson Highschool Automotive Program.

During this time of lock down as you Walk through the garage or back yard and decide on what to

do with those car parts in question consider donating to the Carson Highschool Automotive program.

When this shutdown is over and the school is back in session surprise the students with car

parts. Jan
