Welcome from Graeme Janes, CEO, Christian Venues Association

On behalf of the Staff and Board of Christian Venues Association, I invite you to join us at the 2018 Christian Venues Association National Conference.

This biennial event in 2018 is being held at The Collaroy Centre on Sydney’s glorious Northern Beaches.

As the following pages indicate, this year our conference will take on a slightly different look. The key changes are:

• The Connect Conference will run from Tuesday afternoon to lunchtime Friday.

• On the Monday and Tuesday, Masterclasses will be on offer.

• The Trade Show will be held over two days, with one day being for Food and Kitchen services and products...and the second day for Adventure activity services and products, maintenance equipment, business services and general site solutions.

As always, the conference will revolve around three key pillars being:

• Exceptional Bible Teaching • Informative and relevant workshops • Time for networking, and relaxing.

Our Bible Teacher this year is Dr Melinda Cousins

Melinda is the Director of Ministry Accreditation for Baptist Churches SA as well as Senior Lecturer in Biblical Studies at Tabor College. She has been an ordained Baptist minister for 15 years, previously working as Teaching Pastor at Blackwood Hills and as State Director for Global Interaction.

Melinda completed her PhD through Charles Sturt University in 2016 after receiving a Public and Contextual Theology scholarship. Her thesis was titled “Pilgrim Theology: Worldmaking through Enactment of the Psalms of Ascents (Pss 120-134)”

Melinda’s two great passions are God’s Word and God’s world – particularly, hearing how God has spoken and continues to speak to us; and seeing people respond by worshiping Jesus in their own unique cultural contexts. She has taught Old Testament intensives in Zambia and China. She loves to travel any chance she gets and is hoping to continue adding to her current tally of 48 countries visited.

Melinda’s teaching will be around the theme of Unity - Unity in Spirit - Unity in Purpose - Unity in Desire - Unity in Christ.

Pre-Conference Tour

A Pre-Conference tour is being organised, commencing on Thursday August 2nd, 2018. This tour is scheduled to visit numerous sites in and around the Sydney basin. Please register your interest in this tour on the Registration Form.

MASTERCLASSES

NARTA Accreditation Workshop

Spend ½ day with experts being mentored through the NARTA Accrediation program.

Duration: 3 Hours

Mental Health First Aid

Mental health first aid is the help provided to a person who is developing a mental health problem, or who is in a mental health crisis (eg, the person is suicidal or has had a traumatic experience). Like physical first aid, mental health first aid is given until the person receives professional help or until the crisis resolves.

Duration: TBC

Games for Wet Days

What to do when it’s too wet to go outside. This ½ day workshop will provide numerous options to keep campers both stimulated and enthused through the wet weather.

Duration: 3 Hours

Activity Training Benchmarking

Whilst the Adventure Activity Standards, Nationals Outdoor Recreation Training Package, NORLS and NARTA provide frameworks to design training around, how do we know we are training appropriately.

This Masterclass is designed as a time for those tasked with designing and providing training to activity staff, to benchmark their training procedures against others within the industry.

Attendance to this Masterclass is restricted to those who are already involved in training delivery within their organisation.

Duration: 3 Hours

Developing a Crisis Media Plan

What to do when the media comes calling. This Masterclass will provide training and strategies on how to prepare and how to respond when an incident occurs.

Knowing what to do before it is needed is essential for all those involved in camp leadership.

Duration: 3 Hours

A suite of long form workshops are being offered pre conference to allow attendees to maximise their travel budgets.

First Aid

A full day Senior First Aid Course. The qualification gained at this course is valid for 3 years from date of successful completion.

Duration: All Day

CPR

To remain current, CPR should be reaccredited every 12 months. This course will provide this qualification.

Duration: 3 Hours

Working at Heights

Under certain circumstances, licencing is required to use ladders. This course will provide the required training and assessment to comply with this legislation.

Duration: TBC

Overlooking Sydney’s picturesque Northern Beaches, The Collaroy Centre is one of Christian Venues Association premier facilities. With 440 beds, the site offers a choice of accommodation in twin share or bunk rooms. Regardless of the option chosen, all rooms are ensuited. The Centre is a short walk from the beach and local shops (including several cafes) and is

within 40 minutes of the centre of Sydney.

At the 2018 Conference we are delighted to announce a series of Masterclasses. The idea of Masterclasses is to allow a more in-depth discussion and training on particular topics that require more time and expertise to achieve a desired outcome.
