UPES-CAMBRIDGE WORKSHOP AND SEMINAR ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: TECHNOLO-
GY AND BEYOND”, ORGANIZED IN COLLABORATION WITH UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE ON
8TH JANUARY 2019
Dr. Abhishek Kumar Mishra (Convener), Physics Department, SoE from UPES, Dehradun and Dr. D. Joshi (University
of Cambridge, UK & Vigyan Shaala), Dr. Alexander Patto (CEO, WaterScope, UK) organized this one day event at
Bidholi campus of UPES, Dehradun.
A team of 12 delegates from University of Cambridge, UK visited the UPES on 8th Jan. 2019 and gave hands-on training
on water testing. The workshop explored two important questions central to nearly every major challenge and opportuni-
ty the world faces today – access to clean Water and Energy.
The first part of the event was in a form of workshop and focused on water, led
by a team of researchers based at the University of Cambridge, UK and Water-
Scope. The team comprised of biologists, physicists, material scientists and engi-
neers namely Dr. Alexander Patoo (CEO, WaterScope), Dr. Nalin Patel, Tian-
heng Zhao, Sammy Mahdi, Alfred Wong, and Jay Patel gave hands-on training
for water testing to our students and faculty members. The team also demonstrat-
ed assembly of a 3D printed OpenFlexure Microscope, which is a 3D printable
microscope, including a precise mechanical stage to move the sample and focus the optics that can be operated by a
Raspberry Pi. This microscope has proved to be a very useful tool for diagnosing diseases and a very useful teaching aid
with communities in Africa.
The second session was based on Energy and Energy policies, where Mr. Priyank
Hirani from University of Chicago, USA and Dr. Vijay from Cambridge Display
Technology discussed work on Energy Research. Mr. Saurabh Tripathi from
Council on Energy, Environment and Water, New Delhi discussed work on na-
tional roadmap for clean cooking energy for India and analyzing the data on
household energy access from six states in India with our Management and Law
students and faculty members at Kandoli Campus.

Title: Materials for Energy and Environment: Computational Solutions.
CO2 hydrogenation to useful chemical products such as formic acid and methanol is of great interest and we re-
cently found Cu2O as a suitable catalyst for CO2 conversion to formate and formic acid under mild conditions.
We used DFT+U methodology to investigate CO2 hydrogenation to formic acid and fuels formation on copper
oxide. Different routes have been investigated towards formic acid formation and results show that carboxyl inter-
mediate is more favourable compared to formate intermediate on CuO(111), which is contrast to hydrogenation
on Cu2O(111) surface, where formate
route was found to be energetically fa-
voured.
Commercial CO2 capture technology that
exists today is very expensive and energy
intensive. BxCyNz samples can be easily
synthesized from ordinary inexpensive
starting materials viz. boric acid, activated
charcoal and urea. In collaboration with
experimental group of Prof. C. N. R. Rao
at JNCASR, we have explored the adsorption of CO2, CH4, and other gases on graphene and 2-dimensional BCN
and will talk about this work. The toxicity and health hazards posed by pesticides, even at very low concentra-
tions, have become large concerns for both developing and developed countries. Large surface area, reduced cyto-
toxicity, delocalized π-electrons and tunable chemical properties make graphene a perfect candidate for adsorp-
tion of chemicals to purify water. In collaboration with Prof. T. Pradeep`s research group at IIT Madras, our study
reveals that graphene can be used as an effective absorbent of pesticides and hence opens a new avenue of materi-
als for water purification.

Title: Ferromagnetism in Monatomic Chains: Spin-Dependent Bandwidth Narrowing/Broadening
The experimental realization of one-dimensional (1D) monatomic chains of transition elements has opened a new route to
study the magnetism in nanostructures in the field of condensed matter Physics. 1D chains are also being explored for vari-
ous technological application due to their unique properties. One of the unique properties is to have only one channel availa-
ble for conduction required for spintronic applica-
tions.
In 1D itinerant ferromagnets, the ferromagnetism is
driven by combined effect of band splitting and band
narrowing/broadening . As a result of it, for the sys-
tems with less than half filled band, the up spin band
gets broadened and down spin band narrowed down
and vice versa for more than half filled band systems.
We have analysed the role of band narrowing/
broadening in the magnetic and electronic properties
of low dimensional itinerant strongly correlated elec-
tronic systems, which is particularly important in 3d
transition elements.
Density functional theory and mean field results have been coupled to explain the —— phenomenon in one dimensional
monatomic chain of 3d transition elements Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co and Ni. We found that in ferromagnetic ground state
not only the band splitting but also the relative band narrowing/broadening plays a crucial role and the bandwidths of both
spins become different as a manifestation of correlated spin hopping interaction. For less than half-filled band (i.e. for Sc,
Ti, V and Cr), the up spin band broadens and the down spin band narrows down. For the (half and) more than half filled
band (i.e. for Mn, Fe, Co and Ni), the down spin band broadens and the up spin band narrows down. As a result, (in most of
the cases) only one spin channel is present for conduction, showing ferromagnetism which could be useful for spintronics

TITLE: COMPUTER SIMULATIONS OF MATERIALS: THE CASE OF SPIN DYNAMICS
AND THE CONCEPT OF TEMPERATURE IN MAGNETIC SYSTEMS
The concept of temperature in magnetic systems is examined in terms of a generalizations of the equipartiton the-
orem. We illustrate it by studying how two spin systems in thermal contact reach equilibrium. Using the spin dy-
namics simulation method, we consider two planar arrays of classical spins governed by the Heisenberg hamilto-
nian, interacting each other through an edge. According to an expression for the temperature of the system based
on spin configuration, we are able to obtain the temperature evolution with respect to time. The spin temperature
follows an exponential behaviour, and can be modelled by the Newton cooling law, reaching a common final tem-
perature which is in complete agreement with the theoretical thermodynamic prediction. The simulation results
give new insight on the meaning of temperature for magnetic systems and provide an operational method to cal-
culate it in computer simulation.

Talk Title: Impact of Extreme Climatic Events on Agriculture in Indian State of Odisha.-Dr Narendra Dalei
Farmers of Indian state of Odisha have mainly been depending upon agriculture for their livelihood. Rice is the
staple food of Odisha and farmers cultivate paddy twice in a year depending upon availability of water and
suitability of climatic conditions. Agriculture of the state is susceptible to local extreme weather. Therefore, in
this study, effort has been made to explore the influence of global climate change on local weather in first
stage and to investigate the influence of the local weather on agriculture in Odisha in the second stage. Second-
ary data for this study were collected from the Department of Agriculture, Government of Odisha and Website
of National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA) and the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies.
Results of regression analyses suggest that the responsiveness of rice production to actual rainfall is inelastic in
Odisha. Agriculture is being significantly affected by climate change. This study suggests introducing climate
change adaptation policy in agriculture sector in Odisha.

Distinct Accolades
We are excited to share that our students and faculty showcased their technological innovations at the 1st Uttarak-
hand Investors Summit held in Dehradun, Uttarakhand on 7th October, 2018. Five innovative projects created by our
students and faculty members were selected by the Government of Uttarakhand to display at the exhibition.
The projects that were showcased at the summit were, RescOp (Rescue Operation Nodes) for Post disaster manage-
ment in Uttarakhand, Para Drone, Transportation- Sleep detector, Rash Driving Monitoring System, Intelligent Pa-
trolling System for Security Agencies and Wild Life. RescOp is designed to establish a communication link between
rescue teams and trapped people post-disaster; Para drone is suitable for air-filming with any standard camera, Sleep
detector devise detects the driver’s attention span and alert in case of reduced attention level. Rash Driving Monitor-
ing System helps in alerting the authorities if the vehicle crosses the set limits of speeding, zigzag driving, sudden
acceleration and de-acceleration, stunt driving, etc by sending an alarm, hence helping in avoiding road accidents.
Intelligent Patrolling System for Security Agencies and Wild Life, provides an algorithm for the guards to follow and
increase the chance of spotting the problem. (It is worth mentioning that the ‘Sleep Detector’ has already been appre-
ciated by ‘Transportation’ department of Uttarakhand few weeks back and soon going to be under test clearance for
deployment in road buses.
