    Dear Friend,

    Adoration.

    Devotion.

    Reverence.

No matter which definition you prefer, the truth behind the word worship doesnot change. For the Christian, worship is giving to God His due honor. And forthe Christian, worship is the one great imperative: we are called, commanded, and encouraged to worship the Lord. Jesus Himself states we are to worship theFather in spirit and truth (see John 4:24).

We serve such an awesome and wonderful Lord. It is a good and natural thing toadore Him who created and cares for us. It should be our honor and adulation toworship. Worship is our very reason for being. But many Christians have relegatedworship to the sidelines. Even worse, some bring the word worship to the debatetable, arguing and fighting over how Gods people are to worship.

In our special summer worship issue, well explore the heart of worship. As A.W.Tozer said, Worship is the missing jewel of the evangelical church. The popularworship song calls us to return to the heart of worship. Lets worship togetherbecause it truly is all about Him.

My lovely wife, Lenya, looks at Psalm 45 and the psalmists heartoverflowingwith adoration for our King. Our guest article, Rock is Worship, contains interviewshorts with seven different bands, including Anberlin. In Hot Spots well explorewhether or not contemporary Christian music is biblical. Our From the Blog articleinvestigates another controversial question in the church: what is the proper placefor musical instruments in worship? And one of our own Calvary pastors, NickCrespo, responds and comments on his role as a worship leader.

As always, youll find great resources, articles, Bible studies, and relevantinformation to help you grow in your walk with Jesus Christ.

May God be with you as we return together to the heart of worship.

    In His strong love,

    Pastor Skip

trying to be aith ul to biblical principles, Ithink the use o instruments in worship is very biblical.

You mentioned Psalm 150 and this is agreat place to start. In this psalm we ndalmost every class o instrument mentioned:stringed, percussive, woodwind, and brass.

And we nd all o these instruments beingused to worship God throughout the Bible

rom the utes mentioned in Genesis to thetrumpets in the book o Revelation.

But lets not stop at Psalm 150. There areliterally dozens o re erences throughout theentire Bible that describe the use o instruments. Here are just a ew:

Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister o Aaron, took the timbrel in her hand; and allthe women went out a ter her with timbrelsand with dances (Exodus 15:20).

Then David and all the house o Israel played music be ore the Lord on all kinds o instruments o r wood, on harps, on stringedinstruments, on tambourines, on sistrums, and on cymbals (2 Samuel 6:5).

Sing to the Lord with the harp, with theharp and the sound o a psalm, with trumpets

and the sound o a horn; shout joy ully be orethe Lord, the King (Psalm 98:5-6).

I would suggest that Scripture encouragesus to use instruments to worship God. Ibelieve that instruments enhance and notdiminish the worship o God. Instrumentsallow us to art ully proclaim His greatness.Instruments aford us the opportunity to useour God given talents to exalt Him. And theability to play an instrument is o ten a gi t

rom Godalways to be used or His glory. Although I dont think your church is disobeying God or not using instruments, Idont eel excluding them is an accurate orcomplete biblical approach towards honoringGod through music.

Question:I attend a church that doesnt believe in using any instruments at all during the worshipservice. But when I read the Bible, I nd there are many places that mention musicalinstruments used or worshipsuch as Psalm 150.

My question is whether our church is disobeying God or not using instruments in our worship.

    a e s u s t o u s e i n s t r u m e n t s . . .

    35

Answer:Thank you or the question. Youre de nitely

doing the right thing in nding out what theBible has to say about an issue, and not relying ully on a tradition or a particular churchsteaching.

Essentially, the answer to your questionhas two parts. First, what is true worship?Second, does the useor non use o instrumentsdiminish or enhance the worshipexperience ofered to the Lord?

To answer the rst part, lets look to JesusChrist.

Jesus is quite clear regarding New Testament worship. In the Gospel o John, Jesusspoke to a woman who was tripped up onthe whole theme o worshipmuch like ussometimes. When she asked Jesus where toworship, Jesus gave a very simple and directanswer: The hour is coming when you willneither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers willworship the Father in spirit and truth; or theFather is seeking such to worship Him. God isSpirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. (John 4:21, 23-24).

Here we nd Jesus using two words inrelation to worship: spirit and truth. This is

exactly how we are to worship.

Now lets move to the second aspecto your question: the use o instru

ments. I you are worshipingGodas Jesus statesyou

dont need instrumentsto do so. But the Bible

    encourages usto use instru

    ments. Andas believ

So-called worship seems littlemore than some liturgy (high orlow) equated with stained-glasswindows, organ music, oremotion-filled songs andprayers. If the bulletin didntsay Worship Service, maybewe wouldnt know what we weresupposed to be doing.

Pastor Skips orthcoming book is entitled, Homeland Security? Protecting

Your Faith, Family, & Future. Pastor Skip ocuses on what Gods word saysabout how we can best protect three very important areas o our lives.

Until a few years ago, no onein the United States wastalking about a war onterror and the word al Qaida wasnt inour vocabulary. A day in September 2001changed everything and a new enemysurfaced. Now its common to considerthat some people in the world dont likeus and even want to destroy us.

The focus of this book is Homeland Se-curity, but not in the way that you mightthink. While our country is in danger ofterrorist a ttacks, and we will touch onthat in these pages, we have a greaterenemy than terrorism. Yes, our homelandis under attack. But Im talking about ourhomes, our family, our children and ourchurches. And the common key for eachof these elements is the matter of thesoul: because our souls are also underattack. In Ephesians, the Apostle Paulgave us the battle brief ing and wrote,Our struggle is not against f lesh andblood but against the rulers, against theauthorit ies, against the powers of thisdark world (Ephesians 6:12niv).

According to Paul, our real enemies area host of demonic beingsincluding thedevil himself. When the average personhears any mention of demons or thedevil, their response is much like Wood-row Wilsons aunt, Oh dont be silly.Thats not real. People downplay thespiritual aspect as though its not thereal problem.

Until the attacks on the World TradeCenter, the United States didnt havea Department of Homeland Security.Today, there are 200,000 employees inthat federal government department.Their charge is to assess and respond to

terroris t threats to the public. Theyvecreated a color-coded system with different levels of threats ranging fromgreen to red. Red is the most severewhile green is the most mild. Our current threat rat ing in America is at theelevated yellow level which means asignificant terrorist threat. Whether yfly domestic or internat ional, the leverises to the orange level because flyinis a more severe threat with a higherrisk of terrorism.

What methods do you use to get dis-cernment and direction with convict ioIn these aimless times, how do you thiclearly and live with faith and peace ithe midst of turmoil? I created a starting process of three positive commandto use in threatening times. First, realize. Second, recognize. Finally, respon As believers, we want to realize ourposition and then recognize the perilswhich are around us. Armed with thisknowledge, we do something about it;we respond to the prospect or the op-portunity.

Back in the 1950s, Tommy Bolt was aprofessional golfer with a name thatresonated in the golf community. Whiin Los Angeles for a match, everybodygolf knew that Tommy Bolts caddy wa chatterbox who talked throughout thwhole game. Before Tommy teed off, turned to his caddy and said, Okay, ithis game you dont say a word unlessask you. Then you say either yes or noGot it?

Yes. So Tommy swung, took his teshot, and then he walked out to thefairway to find the ball. He located thball under a tree and a bit off the fair-

way. To make the tough shot, he had to shoot underneath thetree, over a lake and onto the green. He looked at the shotand then turned to his caddy and asked, Five iron, dont youthink?

The caddy s tood there and said, No.

Tommy Bolt said, What do you mean, not a five iron? Watchthis.
