    Dear Friend,

After a rather interesting springsnow in May?weve finally come to the beautifulsummer season. As much as we look forward to our outdoor activities, we as believerslook forward even more to the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. But the events of theend times, as outlined in the book of Revelation, strike fear into a lot of peopleevensome Christians.

So I wanted to devote this edition of Connectionthe magazineto examining thisextraordinary book, to shed some light on its imagery, and to attempt to answer a few ofthe most popular questions people have about it. Of course, volumes have been written

about the book of Revelation, but I hope well spark your interest and encourage you todig deeply in your personal Bible study.

We continue our daily devo section, God Daily, in the book of Micah and read allthe way up to the second chapter of Ephesians. I pray you are taking the time tocontemplate the Scriptures daily, and that you continue to be blessed in your quiet time.

Dr. Norman Geisler, the author of over 70 books, contributes an article taken from hisstudy, A Popular Survey of the New Testament. This overview of Revelation includes bothinternal and external evidence for its veracity and an outline of the contents of the book.

Lenya explores one of the clearest biblical themesthe bodily return of Jesus Christ. Her article helps answer the question: What exactly happens before Christ returns?

Our Off the Cuff section features an interview with Dr. Tim LaHaye. Together, wediscuss how current events confirm and fulfill biblical prophecies, and discover howbelievers are to live in the last days.

In From the Blog, Ill answer a reader's question regarding the important distinctionbetween the rapture and the second coming of Jesus Christ. And Hot Spots attemptsto uncover the identity of the two witnesses spoken about in Revelation 11.

Its my hope that the great resources, articles, and relevant information within continueto help you grow in your personal walk with Jesus Christ. May God bless you!

PICTURE a draped statue standing in front of a public building. See thepeople gathered and hear a band playing in the background. Imagine themayor introducing the artist, who stands up and tells the crowd about hisinspiration for sculpting this statue. Suddenly, theres a drum roll and the

drape or veil is lifted off. The statue is displayed for all to see. Thats theidea of the word revelation.

The book of Revelation names itself in the opening words to the book:The Revelation of Jesus Christ (Revelation 1:1). The word revelationcomes from the Greek word apokalupsis, which means "to uncover,to take the veil off, to make something clear." The true meaning of theword is in great contrast to how many people view the book. Manybelieve that Revelation is a mysterious bookdifficult to understand. But its not. Revelation is meant to lift the veil so we can see Jesus

clearly as the glorified Judge of the earth and the coming King.

of the earth and the coming King.Louis Talbot wrote about the book

of Revelation: The devil has turnedthousands of people away from thisportion of Gods Word. He does not wantanyone to read a book that tells of his

being cast out of heaven, nor is he anxiousfor us to read of the ultimate triumph ofhis number one enemy, Jesus Christ. Themore you study the book of Revelation, themore you understand why Satan fights sohard to keep Gods people away from it.

    R E G A R d I N G R E V E L A T IO N

Not everyone shares the sameview on the book of Revelation. There are at least four eschatologicalviewpoints, or ways to interpret it.

    1. ThE PRETERIST VIEW: This comes fromthe Latin word praeter, meaning past. Topreterists, the book of Revelation and theend time events were completely fulfilledin the first three centuries of the Roman

Empire. They believe that the happeningsdescribed are over and completed. But this viewpoint ignores the claimsthat Revelation speaks of prophecythings yet future. John wrote, I testifyto everyone who hears the words of theprophecy of this book (Revelation 22:18,emphasis added). The problem with the

preterist view is that Revelation speaksof events that didnt happen in the firstfew centuries of the Roman Empire. Itprophesies things yet to come, like thesecond coming of Jesus Christ to set

up His kingdom (see Revelation 19).

    2. ThE hISTORICAL VIEW: The historicalview sees Revelation as a panorama ofchurch history from apostolic times to thepresent. Those who hold this view claimto see within the book of Revelation: therise and fall of the Roman Empire, therise of the Catholic Church, the rise ofIslam, the French Revolution, and on and

on. The problem with the historical campis that the various perspectives conflictwith one another. This goes against theidea that Revelation is a clear unveiling.

    3. ThE ALLEGORICAL VIEW:This belief holdsthat Revelation is simply a picture of thetimeless, constant struggle betweengood and evil. The problem with thisview is that it also ignores the graphic

predictions within the text that pointto Revelation as a book of prophecy.

    4. ThE FUTURIST VIEW: This is the view Ihold (although agreeing with the historicalviewpoint that part has been fulfilledlikethe seven letters to the seven churches). The prophecies, from chapter 6 through

  • 8/6/2019 Connection Magazine 2011 Summer

    9/48

    9

chapter 22, speak of things yet future: thesecond coming of Christ, the millennialkingdom of Christ, the great white throne

judgment, and the eternal state. Thefuturist viewpoint lines up best withJesus own words concerning the lastdays (see Matthew 24). This is the onlyviewpoint that maintains the consistency of

interpretation based on the grammatical, historical interpretation of the Bible.

    R A N G E O F R E V E L A T I O N

The apostle John was very old when hewrote Revelation in the last part of the lastdecade of the first centurysomewherebetween 95 and 96 AD. John had beenexiled to a small, craggy, rocky, desolate, isolated island called Patmos, about 25miles off the coast of Asia Minor. There,John received The Revelation of JesusChrist, which God gave Him to show Hisservantsthings which must shortly takeplace (Revelation 1:1, emphasis added).

Notice the word shortly. The idea that

these things must "shortly" take placestumbles some people. They say, Wait aminute. This book was written 2,000 yearsago. But John said it will shortly take place.2,000 years seems like an awfully longtime to me.

It helps to understand what the word"shortly" really means. The Greek wordis intake, from which we get our word

tachometer, an instrument that measuresvelocity. The idea is that when the things inRevelation happen, they will happen veryrapidly. God will set the last days of historyin high gear or high velocity. The eventswill come to pass intakevery quickly.

    R U LE R O F R E V E LA T I O N

Remember that John called this book theRevelation, singular. This isnt the bookof revelations, plural. This is not a bunchof revelations about the future, thoughtheyre included in the text. It is mainly therevelation of one particular personJesusChrist. Throughout, we see Jesus revealed:

Chapters 2 and 3 show Jesus as theresurrected, glorified King and Priestministering to the churches.

Chapters 4 and 5 depict Jesus as theglorified Lamb of God in heaven.

Chapters 6-18 reveal Jesus as the comingJudge.

Chapter 19 presents Jesus as the returningRuler to the earth.

Chapters 20-22 demonstrate Christ as theBridegroom with His bride.

Its clear that this marvelous bookis all about revealing Jesus Christ inHis totalityHis multi-faceted glory.

    R E CO R d O F R E V E LA T I O N

Within the first few verses, Johnestablished that Revelation is a book ofprophecy, not allegory. He wrote, Blessedis he who reads and those who hear the

words of this prophecy, and keep thosethings which are written in it; for the timeis near (Revelation 1:3, emphasis added).Revelation is prophecy that uses symbolicimagery. We find lampstands, trumpets, bowls, beasts, seals, etc. We see Jesus asthe Judge with a two-edged sword comingfrom His mouth. Throughout, there aremany other images. And there are somegood reasons Revelation uses signs and

    symbols.

First, they stand the test of time.Regardless of how society progresses orwhat the customs are, signs and symbolstranscend language and culture. Vividimagery makes it possible for all people, atany period, to grasp the meaning.

    Second, symbolism arouses emotion

like nothing else. Its one thing to talkabout a coming world dictator. But we feelmore emotion when we read about it in asymbolic way, as when John described thedictator: And I saw a beast rising up out ofthe sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and on his horns ten crowns (Revelation13:1).

    10/48

    10 skipheitzig.com

Third, the use of imagery is effective because all ofthe signs and symbols in Revelation have their rootsin the Old Testament. Of the 406 verses in the bookof Revelation, there are 360 references, inferences,or allusions to the Old Testament. The symbolismmay seem foreign to us, but in the first century itwas quite easily understood. By reading the OldTestament, we also can understand Revelation.

    R E A S O N F O R R E V E L A T IO N

Reading Revelation will fulfill an important purposein your life. A special blessing is pronounced forthose who read it, listen to it, and keep it: Blessedis he who reads and those who hear the words ofthis prophecy, and keep those things which arewritten in it; for the time is near (Revelation 1:3).

We shouldnt think, Oh, Ill just leave this book tothe theologians to fgure out. Ill read Psalms or oneo the Gospels because thats a whole lot easier. Weshould study this book because God promises aspecial blessing for us. We receive the blessingof seeing Jesus clearly. And the clearer we seeJesus, the happier well be. Why? Because wellunderstand that, at the end of the story, Christ wins.

The Bible is much like a novel. The book openswith everything wonderful: the Garden of Edenfilled with goodness. Thenthe plot twists. Evilcomes into the world; the Deliverer is promised. Theevil grows worse and worse. Then Jesus Christ, ourSavior, is born. He lives, dies, and resurrects fromthe dead. He leaves again with a promise to return. In the meantime, were left waiting and wondering. As we read Revelation, we find out how its going

to turn out. That which is ruined is restored. Whata blessing!

I pray that we open both our hearts and mindsto this book; that we may receive Gods promisedblessing. The Book of the Revelation of JesusChrist: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be withyou all. Amen (Revelation 22:21).

The book of Revelation hasas one of its clearestthemesthe bodily return of Jesus Christ. But whatexactly happens before Jesus returns? Lenyaexplores this question in her article on the rapture.

Recently a test was conducted amongfive high school senior classes todetermine their basic Bible knowledge. Some of their answers were prettycreative. For instance, several believedSodom and Gomorrah were lovers, theepistles were the wives of the apostles, and Jesus told parodies to illustrateprinciples. One of my favorites: Joan ofArc was Noahs wife.

If the most basic biblical knowledge islacking, imagine the scores of errors onthe challenging subject of the end times. This may seem like a topic reserved fortheologians, but if its in the Bible, Godput it there for our understanding. Thesecond coming is referenced 1,845 times

in the Bible: 318 in the New Testamentalone.

So, class, lets take a little multiple-choice quiz to test our Rapture I.Q.

    Question #1: What is therapture?

    a. The time when Jesus comes to setup His kingdom on earth

. The catching away of the church

    c. A prehistoric dinosaur

    Answer: b.

Although the word rapture is not found inthe Bible, it comes from the Latin rapiomeaning caught up. The rapture is asudden event that could happen at anytime.

Then we who are alive and remain shallbe caught up together with them in theclouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thuswe shall always be with the Lord(1 Thessalonians 4:17).

At this time, believers (both dead andalive) will be forcefully taken up intothe air to meet Jesus and go with Him

to heaven. While this is hard to fathom, weve seen previous biblical examples ofindividuals who were raptured. The mostobvious is Jesus, who was taken up,and a cloud received Him, following theresurrection (see Acts 1:9). Both Elijah (2Kings 2:12) and Enoch (Genesis 5:24) wereraptured as well.

Question #2: Who will be raptured?

    a. Anyone who believes in a higherpower and tries to follow the TenCommandments

. The 144,000 spoken of inRevelation

    c. Believers in Jesus Christ

    Answer: c.

God promises that every person whoreceives Jesus as his or her personal

Savior will be saved: For whoevercalls on the name of the Lord shallbe saved (Romans 10:13). We are notcapable of perfectly adhering to the TenCommandments, but God loves us somuch that He gave His only Son to paythe penalty for our sins. If we believethis, we will be saved (see John 3:16).

Many believers in the early churchwere concerned about their deceasedloved ones: What would happen tothem? Would they miss this event? TheHoly Spirit, through the apostle Paul, gave them comfort and reassurance.

But I do not want you to be ignorant,

brethren, concerning those who haveallen asleep, lest you sorrow as otherswho have no hope. For i we believe thatJesus died and rose again, even so Godwill bring with Him those who sleep inJesus (1 Thessalonians 4:13-14).

Believers who died before us willbe the irst to join Christ in thisunprecedented moment.

Question #3: What is the correctorder of the following events?

    a. Israel becomes a nation

. Increased wars, earthquakes, false prophets, and famine

    c. The rapture of the church

    d. The great tribulatione. The second coming of

    Jesus Christ

    Answer: a., b., c., d., and e.

For 2,500 years, Israel was scatteredfrom their homeland. Because they werenot a sovereign nation, they could notmake their own laws or have their ownmilitary.

He will set up a banner or the nations, and will assemble the outcasts o Israel, and gather together the dispersed oJudah rom the our corners o the earth(Isaiah 11:12).

All that changed at midnight onMay 14, 1948 when the British Mandateover Palestine expired and Israelbecame an independent nation. Thissingle event fulfilled Isaiahs prophecyand signaled the commencement of theend times.

While there have always been naturaldisasters, false prophets, and wars,

their frequency and intensity continueto increase. Even now, Japan is inthe aftermath of the 9.0-magnitudeearthquake and subsequent 30-foot wallof water that swept across towns andfields and took thousands of lives. Justas labor pains increase and intensifyprior to the birth of a baby, events likethese will increase as well.

And Jesus answered and said to them,Take heed that no one deceives you. Formany will come in My name, saying, I amthe Christ, and will deceive many. Andyou will hear o wars and rumors o wars.See that you are not troubled; or all thesethings must come to pass, but the end isnot yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. Andthere will be amines, pestilences, andearthquakes in various places(Matthew24:4-7).

Sounds a lot like our times, doesnt it?

Question #4: Why should webelieve the rapture occurs before

the tribulation?a. The logical progression set in

    Scripture

. God did not appoint believersto wrath

    c. The tribulation is for the purposeof punishing sinful nations andunbelievers

    d. All of the above

    Answer: d.

Its logical to conclude that once theLord has snatched us up in the air, Hesnot going to set us back down on earthto go through the tribulation.

For the Lord Himsel will descend rom

heaven with a shout, with the voice oan archangel, and with the trumpet oGod. And the dead in Christ will rise irst. Then we who are alive and remain shallbe caught up together with them in theclouds to meet the Lord in the air. Andthus we shall always be with the Lord(1 Thessalonians 4:16-17).

God is the Deliverer of His own chosenchildren. We are referred to as sonsof light and sons of the day. We arenot the objects of Gods wrath, butthe children of His great love and firmprotection. He delivered Israel out ofEgypt, and He delivers us from sin andshame.

For i God did not spare the angels whosinned, but cast them down to hell anddelivered them into chains o darkness,to be reserved or judgment; and didnot spare the ancient world, but savedNoah, one o eight people, a preacher orighteousness, bringing in the lood onthe world o the ungodly; and turning thecities o Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, makingthem an example to those who aterwardwould live ungodly; and deliveredrighteous Lot, who was oppressed by theilthy conduct o the wicked the Lordknows how to deliver the godly out otemptations and to reserve the unjustunder punishment or the day o judgment(2 Peter 2:4-7, 9).

God judged Sodom and Gomorrahyetdelivered Lot. He destroyed the sinfulworldyet delivered Noah and his family. He condemned fallen angelsyet sparedthe holy angels. Therefore, we can becertain He knows who belongs to Himright now and will, therefore, deliver themout of this fallen world beore He poursout His wrath.

For God did not appoint us to wrath, butto obtain salvation through our Lord JesusChrist, who died or us, that whether wewake or sleep, we should live togetherwith Him (1 Thessalonians 5:9-10; see alsoRevelation 3:10).

Question #5: What should we dowhile we wait?

    a. Distract ourselves withmeaningless diversions

. Watch what is happening in theworld in light of Scripture

    c. Be ready, hopeful, and patient

    d. Comfort each other with hope

    Answer: b., c., and d.

Two thousand years ago, Jesussaid, Behold, I am coming quickly!(Revelation 3:11) and then again inRevelation 22:20: Surely I am coming

quickly. If it was quickly thenit ismore so now. Jesus said no one knowsthe exact day or the hour of His coming(see Matthew 24:36), so we should bein a state of perpetual readiness. Paulencouraged, Therefore comfort oneanother with these words(1 Thessalonians 4:18).

Hee ae some necesstes to stow nou eadness ackpack:

    Watch soberly(Matthew 24:42 and Luke 12:37)

    Look for His gloriousappearing(Titus 2:13)

    Be condent(2 Corinthians 5:7)

    Wait eagerly(1 Corinthians 1:7)

    Wait patiently(James 5:7)

Comfort each otherwith hope(1 Thessalonians 4:18)

    Spread the Wordtimeis short(Matthew 28:19)

How did we do, class? Dont worry, thiswas only a quiz; but study upthe finalexam is coming soon!

    Internal Evidence1. The author calls himself John fivetimes (1:1, 4, 9; 21:2; 22:8).

    2. No one else but the apostle Johncould use just his name, John, and havehis book accepted.

    3. It is the only book, other than the Gos-pel of John (also written by the Apostle

John), to refer to Christ as the Word(Logos) in the personal sense (John 1:1;Revelation 19:13).

    4. The basic style and content use of theGreek fit the apostle John.

    5. The vocabulary has a strong overlap:

416 words in the gospel are the same as913 separate words in Revelation.

    6. The authors detailed knowledge ofthe land and events fits the apostle John(chapters 1-3).

    7. The late date (AD 95see below) fitsJohn, who alone among the apostleslived to this date.

    External Evidence

    1. Justin Martyr called the authorA certain man among us, whose namewas John, one of the apostles of Christ(Justin,Against Heresies).

    2. Irenaeus, an early resident of Asia, cited it as Johns writing.

Who Wrote It?John the apostle, authorof the Gospel of Johnand the three Epistlesof John, is the author of

    Revelation.

    3. The Shepherd of Hermas refers to it.

    4. The early Muratorian canon includes itin the Bible.

    5. Other early fathers cited it as comingfrom John the apostle, including Tertul-lian, Hippolytus, Clement of Alexandria,

    Origen, Athanasius, and Augustine.

    6. Later voices to reject Johns author-ship did so on dogmatic grounds, largelybecause they opposed Johns millennial-ism and used an allegorical method ofinterpretation.

    7. The alleged assertion by Papias thatJohn was martyred before AD 70 iscontradicted by many other sources (seepoints 1-6) and is subject to other inter-pretations.

To Whom Was ItWritten? The book of Revelation was written to

the seven churches which are in Asia:

to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamos, toThyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and toLaodicea (1:11).

    Where Were TheyLocated?

The readers were located in Asia Minor(1:4), which is modern Turkey. They were

strategically located on circular roadsthat bound populous, wealthy, and influ-ential sections of the province.

Why Was It Written? There are many reasons for the

writing of the book of Revelation: (1)to communicate the Person, power, and program of the Savior (1:1); (2) tocomfort the persecuted saints (1:9); (3) tocondemn the princes of sin (chapters 17-20); (4) to complete the plan of Scripture(22:18-19); and (5) to convey the promiseof Christs second coming (22:12).

What Is It About? The Theme: The consummation of all

    things in Christ (11:15).

Ke Vese: Write the things which youhave seen [chapter 1], and the things

which are [chapters 2-3], and the thingswhich will take place after this [chapters4-22] (Revelation 1:19).

    Ke Wods and Phases: after (thesethings) (47x), angel (75x), Babylon (6x),beast (38x), bowl (12x), Christ (11x),church (20x), devil, Satan (13x), dragon(13x), earthquake (7x), God (98x), Jesus(14x), judge, judgment (16x), know (11x),

Use o the Old Testament: The lan-guage of Revelation is heavily depen-

dent on the Old Testament. The mostused books are Psalms, Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel.

The Nature ofRevelation: It is abook with:

    1. A prophetic program (1:19)

    2. Enigmatic proclamations (havingmysterious meaning) (see 13:18)

    3. A dramatic plot and climactic plan(see 11:15)

    4. Cataclysmic pronouncements(judgments) (chapters 6-18)

    5. An apocalyptic presentation(revelations)

    6. A polemic purpose (anti-Babylon)

    7. Numeric proliferation (many numbers:7s and 12s)

    8. Rhythmic (and parenthetic) progression

    9. Symbolic pictures (see 1:1signified)

    10. Hebraic phraseology (278 of 404verses are from the Old Testament)

Pophec: It is the most prophetic ofall New Testament books. John classedhimself as a prophet (22:9) and refers tohis book as a prophecy five times (1:3;22:7, 10, 18, and 19).

Heaven and Eath: It is characterized byits notable interplay between heaven andearth.

    Woshp: It stresses worship more thanany book in the New Testament (see 3:9;4:10; 5:14; 7:11; 9:20; 11:1, 16; 15:4; 19:4, 10,20; 22:9).

The Contents: First, there is therevelation of His Person (chapter 1),setting forth His prophet (vv. 1-2), Hispromise (v. 3), His priests (vv. 4-6), Hisparousia or coming (v. 7), His pedigree

as the Alpha and Omega (v. 8), Hisproclamation to write this book (vv. 9-11),His pictorial presentation as the Head ofHis church (vv. 12-18), and His propheticprogram (vv. 19-20).

Having spoken of the Person of Christ, the book turns to the possession ofChristHis church (chapters 2-3). In thissection His character is shown to be

sufficient for the varied conditions in Hischurch. In 2:1-7 He is preserving a patientchurch (Ephesus); in verses 8-11 He haspriority in a persecuted church (Smyrna);in verses 12-17 His power is manifest in apolluted church (Pergamos); in verses 18-29 His purity is sufficient for a paganizedchurch (Thyatira); in 3:1-6 His providenceis evident in a professing church (Sardis);in verses 7-13 His protection is provided

for a pure church (Philadelphia); and inverses 14-22 His primacy is projected in apassive church (Laodicea).

In the final section, we turn from thePerson and possession of Christ to theprogram of Christ (chapters 4-22). First,we see His program in heaven (chapters

4-5), which is to praise God for creation(chapter 4) and to praise Him for Hisredemption (chapter 5). Then we seeHis program on earth unfolded with theseven-sealed book (chapters 6-22). Hisprogram during the tribulation (chapters6-18) is unfolded by the seven seals(6:1-8:5), the seven trumpets (8:6-15:8),and the seven bowls (chapters 16-18).Then we see His program at the secondcoming (chapter 19), during the millennium(chapter 20), and in the new heaven andnew earth (chapters 21-22) when paradiselost becomes paradise regained, the devilis finally defeated, and righteousnesswill reign in a world of no sorrow, crying, disease, or deathforever.

How sweet is rest after fatigue! How sweet

will heaven be when our journey is ended.

Thus it is in hell; they would die, but theycannot. The wicked shall be always dying butnever dead; the smoke of the furnace ascendsfor ever and ever. Oh! Who can endure thusto be ever upon the rack? This word everbreaks the heart. Wicked men do now thinkthe Sabbaths long, and think a prayer long;but oh! How long will it be to lie in hell for

    ever and ever?

The apostolic church thought more about theSecond Coming of Jesus Christ than about

death and heaven. The early Christians werelooking, not for a cleft in the ground called a

grave, but for a cleavage in the skycalled Glory.

Im often asked about thetwo witnesses in Revelation

    11. Their identity is amystery, but whats reallysignificant about theseguys is what they do. Theyprophesy for three and ahalf years (1,260 days), the

last three and a half yearsof the tribulation period,in Jerusalem. And they havepowera lot of power. Theyare able to destroy theirenemies with fire. They can

stop the rain fromfalling. They can turn waterto blood. Theyre a differentkind of witness; they donttake any flak from anyone!

A second reason is prophecy. Malachipredicted that Elijah would come beforethe great and terrible day of the Lord, as awitness to the nation of Israel. And historicallythe Jews have believed that Moses wouldcome before the Messiah. In Deuteronomy

18:15, Moses said God wouldraise up a prophet like me. ManyJews inferred this would be Moses

again. And people asked John theBaptist, Are you Elijah? Are you thatprophet? Because of prophecy, thatwas the expectation.

A third reason is New Testamentprecedence. Moses and Elijah alreadydid this. They returned to earth. When Jesus was transfigured on themountain, Moses and Elijah were with

    Him, speaking about the future.

A fourth reason is their passing: Bothleft the world in an unusual way. Elijah didntdiehe was taken up into heaven. Mosesdied, but Jude 9 says the archangel Michaeland Satan disputed over his body. Whyfight over a dead body unless God wants topreserve it for His special purpose?

I cant think of anyone who would have moreimpact on the Jewish nation than Moses, who represents the Law, and Elijah, who isseen as the greatest prophet. Can you?

    hotspotsonline.net

Some people say these cant be realpeople, and that they must represent somegreat future movements. I dont think so,because Revelation talks about their deadbodies lying in the streets. Movementsdont have bodies. We should read this astwo literal prophets: witnesses for God whocome in the end times, filled with the HolySpirit, supernaturally enabled to carry on

their ministry. They are faithful witnesses inthe midst of a world that hates God. Theydont compromiseand they dont give up.

The fact that theyre even here isan indication of the grace of God.It shows that during the greattribulation people will still have thechance to be saved. There will be144,000 witnesses, an angel flying

aroundand these two witnesses, with a worldwide ministry.

So who are they? Answer:I dont know! You cant bedogmatic. But my opinion (andthat of most commentatorsand scholars in Revelation) is thatthese two could be Moses and Elijahreturned to earth. The works t h e y

do sound very similar to the w o r k sdone by Moses and Elijah. Elijah c a l l e dfire from heaven to destroy the men sent totake him. He had the power to declare thatit would not rain for three years. Moses hadthe authority to turn the waters of the Nileinto blood. Those signs sound very similarto the performances of these two witnesses.

We should read this astwo literal prophets:

witnesses for God who come in

the end times, filled with the HolySpirit, supernaturally enabled tocarry on their ministry.

Skip: Tim, as you look around todayat whats happening with current events,do you believe that we have taken a hugeleap toward the fulfillment of biblical

    prophecies?

Dr. Tim LaHaye: Oh yes. Imconvinced that globalism has threeprongs to it that are being fulfilled beforeour very eyes and the average churchmandoesnt understand it. Globalismgovernmentally, that is predicted inScripture will take place when theAntichrist takes over. Were seeing all

these things built up toward that in afrightening way as world governmentis on the lips of everyone. Also, a worldeconomy. Its frightening today as thewhole world becomes economicallyindependentthe economy thats goingto be destroyed in chapters 17 and 18 ofRevelation. Then, around the world manyof the religions are getting together andhaving unity conferences. What frightens

me, Skip, is that there are evangelicalswho are really liberals and talk aboutthat same kind of unity. I think, like H.A.Ironside used to say, that we shouldntbe contentious in faith but we shouldcontend for the faith. Weve got to bringback the people who believe in theinerrancy of the Wordthe authority

of God. Thats a perceptive questionbecause on every hand we see thingshappening. I liken it to my mother anddad. I remember when they were saved. My dad was saved eight years before

he died suddenly of a heart attack. Ican remember he and my mother wereso fascinated with Bible prophecy; yetthere were things pictured in the Biblethat couldnt possibly have happenedwhen they were alivebut they canhappen today. One obvious one is thetwo witnesses in Revelation 11. Theyrekilled by the Antichrist and his minionsand people leave their bodies in the

streets for three days and three nightsand theyre seen by the whole world. When my mother and dad looked at that:How in the world could you see two mensbodies in the city of Jerusalem lying inthe street and see it all over the world? But nobody asks that question today. And then another one is Daniel. In Daniel12:4, the prophet said that in the last dayspeople will run to and fro on the earthand knowledge will be increased. Why didhe put those two together 2,500 yearsago? I mean, thats incredible. No humanbeing couldve thought that up. But Godgave him the inspiration. Its like Petersaid: These prophets, holy men of God,were moved by the Holy Spirit. Thats whythe accuracy of prophecy is incredible.

    encouragepeople to so live

in anticipationof His comingthat when wewake up in themorning, wesay, Perhaps

today will bethe day my Lordwill come."

Skip: Americans wonder about theUnited States. One of the big questionswe get is where is the United Statesin the end times and in the prophetic

utterances of Scripture? How do yourespond to that?

Dr. Tim LaHaye: A safemessage is there is no clear, concisereference to the United States or wewouldnt even be asking that question. There are some allusionsbut its tooshaky. For example, some of my prophecyfriends say Ezekiel 38 and 39 talks about

Sheba, Dedan, and the merchants ofTarshish and somehow figured out thatmeans Great Britain. And the prophettalks about the young lions of Shebaand Dedan. I suppose that could be thecolonies of the United States and Canadaand Australia. But thats a stretch. Thatsabout the most definitive thing you haveabout the United States.

Skip: You know when people hearthat kind of stuff, Tim, there are one oftwo main responses: very excited or veryfearful. Even some Christians becomefearful when they talk or hear about Bibleprophecy. What instruction does the Biblegive for how were to behave and live inthese last days?

Dr. Tim LaHaye: The apostlePaul said in 1 Thessalonians 4:14, thatif we believe that Jesus died and roseagain then when Jesus shouts from

heaven, were going to be taken to bewith Him. The Bible is so clear in thatrespect: that minimum belief is requiredto be a participant. And Jesus, in Hissecond coming parables, speaks aboutbeing ready: there will be two in the bedand one will be taken, one left. He alwaysreferred to the fact that we need to beready: Such an hour that you think not,the Son of Man cometh. One of the things

that has motivated me for the sixty yearsIve been in the ministry is to encouragepeople to so live in anticipation of Hiscoming that when we wake up in themorning, we say, Perhaps today will bethe day my Lord will come.

We see in Revelation 19:14 that whenJesus Christ returns, He is accompanied:And the armies in heaven, clothed infine linen, white and clean, followed Himon white horses. Who is coming backwith Him? Earlier, the chapter speaks of

the bride of Christ: And to her it wasgranted to be arrayedin fine linen, clean andbright, for the finelinen is the righteousacts of the saints(Revelation 19:8). Thebride of Christ is thechurch. Paul said,When Christ who is

our life appears, thenyou also will appearwith Him in glory(Colossians 3:4).

The rapture is whenJesus Christ comesor His church. AtHis second coming,He comes with His

church. At the rapture,Jesus comes in the airand we go up to meetHim. At His return,Jesus comes through the air and all theway down to the earth. At the rapture, Heclaims His bride; at the return He comeswith His bride. At the rapture, only His ownwill see Him: Then we who are alive andremain shall be caught up together with

them in the clouds to meet the Lord in theair (1 Thessalonians 4:17). At His returnevery eye will see Him (see Revelation1:7). Matthew 24:27 states: For as thelightning comes from the east and flashesto the west, so also will the coming of theSon of Man be. The rapture is a time ofblessing, which is followed by the great

tribulationa time of wrath. At His returnthere will be judgment, followed by thesetting up of His kingdom. At the rapture, the focus is on the Lord and His church. His return will focus upon Israel and Hiskingdom.

The rapture will be sudden, unannounced, and unpredictable. Paul mentioned therapture in 1 Corinthians, and described ithappening: in a moment, in the twinklingof an eye (1 Corinthians 15:52). JesusChrist spoke about it in Matthew 24:44,where he said, Therefore you also beready, for the Son of Man is coming at anhour when you do not expect.

His return is predictableit will comeafter the sevenyears of the greattribulation period.Jesus said inMatthew 24:29-30:Immediately afterthe tribulation ofthose days the sunwill be darkened,

and the moon willnot give its light;the stars will fallfrom heaven, andthe powers of theheavens will beshaken. Then thesign of the Son ofMan will appear inheaven, and then

all the tribes of theearth will mourn, and they will see theSon of Man coming

on the clouds of heaven with power andgreat glory.

Thats why we see the rapture and thereturn of Jesus Christ as two differentevents. Thats also why we believe that

the rapture will come before the greattribulationnot afterward. It wouldntmake much sense for Jesus to rapture usoff the earth at the end of the tribulation, only to say, OK, now were going back. That doesnt fit the chronology, thecontext, or the scriptural communicationand it doesnt fit the character of our God.
