Sponsored by IBERIA BANK and the Glenwood Junior Board, the evening will feature casino fun and games, music by The UnderGrounders, and an incredible silent auction. The Club is one of the most established venues in Birmingham and will be the setting this year. All proceeds will be used to fund Glenwood’s Outpatient Services for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The proposed changes regarding Autism Spectrum Disorder within the upcoming DSM V has sparked debate concerning the impact of the new criteria on identifi cation, diagnosis, and treat-ment. Under the current criteria, a person can qualify for the diag-nosis by exhibiting 6 or more of 12 behaviors; under the proposed defi nition, the person would have to exhibit 3 defi cits in social interaction and communication and at least 2 repetitive behaviors. Within the latter, there is an added category which encompasses those individuals with sensory based issues, which is excluded in the current criteria. In addition, Asperger’s Disorder and Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specifi ed are no longer delineated as sep-arate disorders, but are collapsed under one group; which provides a more dimensional framework for diagnosis. This is signifi cant because with the infl uence of development over time, individual

characteristics change in presentation and intensity. Furthermore, the new criteria does not include age limits, which will broaden the category and encompass older, “higher functioning” individuals that present with social and communica-tive diffi culties beyond the age of three. In addition, the new criteria appear also to better characterize presenting symtoma-tology and allow for diagnosis of individuals with varying pre-sentations of functioning. In regards to the impact on services, clinical competence and diagnostic specifi city will continue to be tantamount in determining appropriate treatment outcomes.

Early Intervention Made Possible Through Telemedicine

It’s truly “a small world, after all,” now that Glenwood has coordinated a technology system that delivers training and expertise to 85 of Alabama’s 130 school systems. Greg Carlson, Vice President of Planning and Project Management is on a mission to make autism assessments more available to parents and teachers. By establishing a presence in schools, Glenwood becomes a partner with the community. Virtual classrooms have been with us for a few years, but now, with telemedicine, we can go one step further along the road toward diagnosing those who were once out of reach. By disseminating top autism spectrum disorder treatment technologies to more people, early intervention no longer is a far away dream for parents who live far from assessment facilities. Research has shown that early intervention is the key to ensuring a better future for those diagnosed with autism. Governor Riley’s “Project Access” initiative made broadband and distance learning available in all Alabama schools. Now, we are reaching new heights.

Glenwood is on the forefront of innovative ways to train teachers. With technology and a Alabama Council for Developmental Disabilities grant, teleconferences will train over 300 more teachers this summer than last.

Volunteers Make a Difference at Glenwood

Every year we are blessed with folks who want to

come to Glenwood and our existing off-site locations and

group homes, to make a difference. From one or two

hours, to days and weeks of time, we rely on the support

of our valued volunteers. We are especially grateful over

the holidays for the GIRL SCOUTS of Jefferson County.

They collected, wrapped and distributed a wide variety of

beautiful gifts for our youth who live here at Glenwood.

Glenwood would like to thank all who supported our Pecans for Autism annual fundraiser. So many helped by volunteering their time at various selling stations, ordering for personal use or giving corporate gifts. A special thanks to the Children’s Service League for staffi ng the selling stations at Hollywood Pools in Vestavia, and for their help in the warehouse on the Glenwood Campus. Another thank you to Bruno’s, Food World, Piggly-Wiggly, Iberia Bank, V. Richards, M & F Bank in Inverness, Pepper Place, Mitchell’s Place and our new partner, Winn-Dixie, for investing in our community, Glenwood and the people we serve by selling our pecans. Our appreciation is extended to, Alabama Power, Southern Nuclear, Vulcan Material and First Commercial Bank for hosting sales for their employees. Our annual pecan sale is truly a community event and all proceeds go back into the community through Glenwood’s outreach and autism programs. We hope everyone enjoyed the new items on our pecan menu this year, such as Dark Chocolate Covered Pecans and Rum Candied Pecans. Through the support of everyone involved in our annual Holiday Pecans for Autism sale, we were able to achieve total sales in excess of $500,000.00. All net proceeds go to fund Glenwood’s autism and behavioral services which touch the lives of over 7,000 individuals each year.

During the holidays, we celebrated by inviting everyone to join in our annual program. We are especially blessed to

have Liberty Crossings United Methodist Church as a neighbor. They generously hosted our production by offering the use of

their auditorium. The day of the performance, there was a full crowd packed to capacity, and when the lights came up, not

a soul in the room could say that they didn’t witness a miracle or two on that stage. There was music, laughter, and a lot

of love shared that day. After the performance, guests dined on a smorgasbord of donated sandwiches from NEWK’S Deli,

who also generously provided chips and all the fixings. MILO’S TEA was refreshing and was also generously donated by our

friends from MILO’S.

Glenwood serves youth and adults with autism spectrum disorder and is home for youths who need treatment for

behavioral health issues. We are Alabama’s most experienced and comprehensive provider of services for children and

adults with autism spectrum disorder. Our organization is unique in its short-term residential treatment services for severely

emotionally disturbed children ages 6 - 12.
