Community Foundation of Birmingham Provides Funding

The Outpatient Services division received generous funding this past year from the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham. This $40,000 specifically provides funding for psychological evaluations. This money covers the cost for those who do not have insurance or those whose insurance does not cover the full cost of an evaluation. Most

October is Disability Employment Awareness Month

“UTILIZING THE TALENTS of all Americans is essential for our nation to out-innovate, out-educate, and out-build the rest of the world.” During National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we recognize the skills that people with disabilities bring to our workforce, and we rededicate ourselves to improving employment opportunities in both the public and private sectors for those living with disabilities.” This is a portion of the proclamation signed by the President on October 3rd, 2011, naming October as Disability Employment Awareness Month. James Watkins, one of Glenwood’s ‘stars,’ was honored with the Personal Achievement Award from the Alabama Association for Persons in

of the requests that we receive are to determine whether or not an individual is on the Autism Spectrum. With the increase in Autism in our society, the ability to diagnose at an earlier age through the assessment process, enables children to qualify for and access needed therapeutic services. The quicker we can identify those on the Spectrum and assist them in accessing services, the better the

We have added three clinical psychologists to our staff this Fall and hope to start an Autism Diagnostic Clinic model in the near future so that we can see more individuals at a time. We are most grateful to the Community Foundation for their financial assistance and helping us to serve more individuals and

James was recognized for his twenty years of full-time work in the mailroom of Protective Life, a national insurance company headquartered in Birmingham. James is an outstanding example of the contribution people can make to their community when the focus is on people’s abilities, rather than the disability. Congratulations, James!

Dr. Elko is a nationally renowned performance consultant, professional motivational speaker and author who works with professional and college football teams, most notably the Pittsburgh Steelers and the University of Alabama. His book, the Pep Talk, is in the process of becoming a major motion picture.

The appreciation luncheon was given in special thanks for those who give their time and efforts to support Glenwood. Dr. Elko spoke on the theme of our most recent Give Green Grow Hope Campaign. He delivered a very inspirational message creating a positive impact on those who attended the luncheon. Thank you to Keynote Speaker, Dr. Kevin Elko; Board member and parent advocate, Philip Young; Glenwood supporter, Al Barbaro; and especially to all who attended our appreciation luncheon. Glenwood would not be possible if not for your continued support.

Teaming Up Fore Autism More than 130 golfers participated in the 19th Katharine R. Ireland Memorial Golf Tournament benefiting Glenwood, Autism & Behavioral Health Center. Under the leadership of Patrick Drummond, Tom Bazemore, Steve Hudson, Murray Priester, Robin Savage, Tris Swingle, Billy Wood and Philip Young, the 19th year of this tournament became another tremendous success. Due to the generosity of King Acura, the title sponsor, Drummond Company and Foresight Coal, championship level teams, team sponsors, hole sponsors, volunteers and other donations the tourney was able to exceed its goal and raise over $100,000.00 for Glenwood’s focus on

adults diagnosed with autism.“There are not many tournaments you can play that have the integrity and tradition like this one does. After players learn how much Glenwood supports our community by the numerous services they offer individuals with autism and special needs they will want to participate and give” said Patrick Drummond.

At Hole17, golfers had a chance

to win an Acura car with a hole-in-one. Again this year, Cullom Walker, Glenwood board member, also known as the “Hot Dog King” was luring players off the course to eat a few hot dogs before heading to the back nine. All day Glenwood’s adult participants with autism enjoyed visiting with golfers, taking pictures, and riding in the golf carts.

Monday’s event, however, seemed to walk away with even more. “Money raised from this year’s tournament goes specifically towards services for adults with autism,” the VP of Adult Services Joe Carter said. “Resources for adults with autism are severely limited compared to their needs. When children with autism grow up, they will continue to need specialized attention and oftentimes assistance finding employment. In the next decade almost 800,000 children with autism will enter adulthood and will continue to need support.”

Glenwood Jr. BoardPresident reports 2010-2011

Accomplishments

Before we examine the progress made over the past year I want to review the mission of the Glenwood Junior Board. The Junior Board was formed seven years ago to carry out four primary goals: (1) raise awareness of Glenwood among our peers and in the greater community (2) educate ourselves and others about autism and behavioral disorders (3) raise funds to support Glenwood’s services and programs and (4) spend quality time with the individuals in Glenwood’s programs. I am able to gladly report that the 2010-2011 Junior Board accomplished all of these objectives with passion and dedication, built upon the foundation of service and caring from the previous Junior Boards.

In February for the seventh consecutive year, the Glenwood Junior Board hosted its annual fundraiser, “A Night Under the Big Top.” This event featured live music by the Undergrounders, a live auction hosted by WJOX’s Tony Kurre, casino games, and a large silent auction. Tony has been a big media supporter of this event as well as its emcee for a number of years. What you may not know is that Tony did all of this even before he had a child diagnosed with autism. Clearly the cause inspires, and through the hard work of the Junior Board, especially Event Chairperson, Katie Gulas, and the generosity

Glenwood Receives Community Partner Award From Hand In Paw

Pictured : Students excitedly accept Hand In Paw’s Tweety Lasker Award

On August 20, 2011, Glenwood was awarded this year’s 2011, Tweety Lasker Award. The Tweety Lasker award is Hand in Paw’s community partner of the year award. Dr. James and Katie Lasker, longtime supporters of Hand in Paw’s mission, gave the first award to Children’s Hospital in 2007. The award is named after their beloved rescued greyhound that passed away that year. Since then, the award has been presented annually to the agency that has demonstrated excellence in partnering with Hand in Paw to serve individuals. Other agencies that have been honored include; UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Bell Center for Early Intervention Programs, and the YWCA of Central Alabama. The Laskers also make a generous donation to Hand in Paw and the recipient is named at Hand in Paw’s signature annual fundraising gala, Picasso Pets. This year’s event was held at the Cahaba Grand. Ms. Lee Yount & Ms. Shannon Messina were presented the attractive bronze sculptor of a greyhound. The beautiful sculptor was created by local artist, Brad Morton.

The Daniel House I and Daniel House II programs have been partnering with Hand in Paw for several years. Hand-in-Paw is an internationally known non-profit organization that provides professionally trained handler and animal teams to promote human health and well-being through animal assisted therapy. In the spring, January thru April, and then again in the fall, September thru December, the boys at Daniel House I and II participate in the 12 week positive living program which teaches compassion and anger management. Its curriculum focuses on preparing youth to be better citizens and parents in the future. The young men enjoy the curriculum and it’s always a highlight of their time while at the programs.

of many in the Birmingham community, the Junior Board exceeded its fundraising goal by over $165,000 for the event. Because of Big Top’s growing success and prominence, we moved the event to The Club.

I believe the new venue helped attract our largest crowd ever, of over 700 attendees. Big- Top once again generated significant coverage on WJOX Radio, in The Birmingham News, on local television stations, and in other media outlets throughout the State of Alabama.

The Junior Board continued its tradition of education about autism and interaction with our clients. Dr. Finn, who always gives generously of his time, came to our September, 2010 meeting to give us the latest updates on autism as well as to answer any questions about it, and Glenwood. The Junior Board also participated in an orientation at Glenwood’s campus, made

arts and crafts with the severely emotionally disturbed population at the CRC White House during the holiday season, helped clients make art for display and auction at Big Top, and had a wonderful bowling outing this fall with adults. Additionally, Junior Board members were active in the community by bringing potential sponsors to various events including Glenwood’s Holiday Program.

As my tenure as President of the Junior Board now closes, I would like to thank:

• Glenwood’s Staff: (especially Rebecca Sibley, Casey Coleman, and Jamie Grace Miller). Despite everyone’s many official duties and jobs, they all put in tremendous effort and time to help the Junior Board accomplish our goals for Glenwood. We could not be effective without the organization’s wonderful behind-the-scenes support.

• The Glenwood Board of Directors.

Their commitment to Glenwood makes it so much easier for the Junior Board to attract dynamic and talented individuals.

• The Glenwood Junior Board. It was a wonderful privilege to work with each member. This group is composed of so many talented individuals who all dedicate time, skills, and financial resources to make the whole much more than the simple sum of the parts. Please thank them if you see them for spending so much time away from families and for working to make Big Top the success it has become.

To close, I would like to thank both Past President Vince Schilleci for running such a well-oiled machine that it practically ran itself this year, and Michael Phillips, who was elected to be 2011-2012 President. Michael is one of the original Glenwood Junior Board members, and you can expect a bright future under someone so dedicated.

Glenwood relies on the contributions and support of individuals, families, foundations, and corporations to fund and operate its programs and services. Without you, its generous friends, Glenwood would not be able to provide essential programming to more than 7,000 children, teens, adults, and families with severe mental health disorders.

Thank you for your support.
