PURPOSE OF PRESENTATION

Content within the following presentation seeks to educate and inform individuals of the benefit of particular training drills, and hence, examines their benefit on player performance and athletic development. Such drills contained within this presentation are able to be adjusted to suit varying ages and skill levels, and can be implemented as required.

Basketball itself requires a variety of techniques and multiple plans of motion (National Academy of Sports Medicine, 2012). In particular, speed and agility training is absolutely crucial for basketball in order to improve not only footwork skills, but also cardiorespiratory stamina (National Academy of Sports Medicine, 2012).

Individuals who partake in basketball allowthemselves to develop in a series of areasincluding the following:

TRAINING SESSIONS

Training styles and sessions differ from coach to coach; however, it remains an important factor for coaches to plan training sessions suited and catered to different points of improvement of each team.

Having previously completed training sessions with several teams in the past, I have been able to successfully gather a variety of drills which will benefit players of all ages and skill levels. I believe each drill is able to be altered to fit the skill level of various teams, and will still provide them with an adequate time and situation to develop such skills.

PURPOSE OF WARM UPS

Completing sufficient warm up before both training and games allows for several things to happen. Not only does a warm up raise the body’s core temperature preparing it for practice (Haefner, 2016), but it also works to lower the risk of injuries and improve athleticism (balance, joint mobility, body control, strength, agility and flexibility.

HIGH SCHOOL WARM UPS

• The YouTube video alongside demonstrates a possible warm-up routine that coaches can implement prior to games. This is perhaps one of the more intense and higher levels of warm-ups, however, the key ideas and concepts are there.

HIGHER LEVEL WARMUPS

• Much the same as the above video, the attached video is an example of a high-level warmup. Although both videos and the warmup within each differ, the main premise is the same, and they both hold the same purpose: to warm player’s body up and prevent potential injury.

At every training and game over the past five years, Thuy has always ensured that we undertake a solid warmup, without fail. This alone has undeniably allowed us to win the majority of our games across the highest level of play.

CHASE DOWN LAYUP SHOOTING DRILLS

The Chase Down Layup Drill is used to teach players to finish layups at full speed and with pressure. This drill is equally as important in both the younger age groups and senior players. It is highly beneficial in terms of high speed dribbling, and requires control of the ball.

HOW IT WORKS

• The drill begins with two lines of players at each end of the court. One line is offensive and will be attacking, and one line is the defensive, and will be chasing.

• The coach begins by bringing the offensive player out from the baseline and gives them an advantage over the defender who always starts on the baseline. The coach’s discretion will determine how far in front the offensive player is.

• The aim is to have the offensive player far enough in front that they have to sprint while dribbling, replicating a high speed fast break, and that when they finish at the rim there is close defensive pressure behind them.

• Once both players are set up, the coach will signal for both players to start, and both players then sprint to the other end of the floor. The offensive player must try and finish at the rim and the defender must pressure the shot without fouling.

• The pair then pass the ball to the next player in line at their end of the floor and the drill is repeated.

Points to Note:• There is to be no fouling by defensive

players. This may result in major injury.• Practice the drill on both sides. This will

allow for players to be able to finish on bothsides of their court, and allows them topractice dribbling with both their left andright hand.

• Ensure that players are attacking the ring atthe correct angle. This results in a higherpercentage of made shots, and ensure easylayups.

REFLECTION OF DRILL

This drill is highly effective, and many coaches use itin order to replicate in game situations that playersmay find themselves in. It allows for the develop ofexcellent ball handling skills in high pressuresituations, and allows players to finish at thebasketball with ease in such situations.

This fun passing drill enforces the importance of catching and passing without travelling, communication, timing and layups at a fast pace. It can also be implemented amongst any age level, and certain alterations can be made in order to adjust it to fit certain skill levels.

HOW IT WORKS

• Players form 3 lines behind the baseline, the two players on the outside lines have a basketball each.

• The players start to move up the floor as one outside player passes to the player in the middle line. Upon catching the pass, the middle line immediately passes back out to the same player.

• The middle player will then turn and receive the pass from the other outside player and pass the ball immediately back to them. The players on the outside lines can take 1-2 dribbles to avoid traveling.

• The drill continues up the floor until the players reach the opposite three-point line. When this happens, the two outside players dribble in and finish with a layup.

• The group then waits at the opposite end for the other groups to finish before going back the other way.

VARIATIONS

• Midrange or three-point shot: Instead of finishing with a layup, the players can finish with a midrange or three-point shot.

• Up and Back: Instead of waiting at the other end, the group can make two trips of the floor.

• One Basketball: For younger and less advanced age groups, this drill can be run with one ball to eliminate confusion and better implement points.

Points to Note: • Passes must be passed in front of the

player on the run using proper passing technique

• Middle player must catch the basketball and quickly pass on the run (no travels)

• Layup technique is very important, particularly for this drill. Ensure each player are doing it correctly

• Receiver must have their hands up calling for each pass

REFLECTION OF DRILL

This drill is suitable to be implemented at any age group, and variations can be made to this in order to make it more suitable for different ages and skill levels. The drill works on a variety of skills, including passing and catching, footwork, communication, and shooting. The drill also assists greatly with the conditioning aspect of trainings.

Incorporation of these training drills within regular training schedules will aid greatly in the development of basic skills amongst teams.

Completing these drills during training sessions is a fun take on developing key abilities and areas of development to help players work on their game.
