Although summer represents a sort of pause in the generation of information for some media companies, this

year has not been like that for us. More so, as we move in multicultural environments where we celebrate those enriching vibrations that fill us with the energy to carry on steadily in our daily journeys.

Maybe it is because summer is when we have the most to share. Summer light gives us the opportunity to travel, see new places, and enjoy the outdoors. We live the growth of our cities; we live in colors: new parks, new museums, new businesses, new friends and new routes open for us to travel and connect with the world. That is what Houston is. That is also The Woodlands and its surroundings areas.

As our communities grow, so do its needs. Especially the ones related to the educational field. For this reason, we talked to Dr. Rebecca Riley, a Texan leader who loves culture and in whose hands lies since the beginning of this year, the management of Lone Star College-Montgomery. This institution located in The Woodlands area is experiencing positive changes, thanks to the supply and demand phenomenon.

It is a privilege for The Montgomery County community to have flagship college programs for our young people and quality training for those who require it. Whether it is studying a professional degree, learning something new or becoming skilled in a specific area, the doors of this educational center are open for everyone. Even for those do not have a college degree or who only want to take a course, the Continuing Education Department has options available. If someone is looking to learn or improve their English level, Lone Star offers those courses and has other opportunities available for everyone.

Dear Connexion W readers, it is a pleasure to keep in touch with you. Continue to enjoy reading in English and/or Spanish. A bilingual community is a progressing one, at cultural and economic levels in a global world.

La educación es el camino

Aunque para algunos medios de comunicación el verano representa una especie de pausa en la generación de información, para nosotros este año

no ha sido así. Más aún, cuando nos movemos en ambientes multiculturales. Celebramos ese vibrar que nos enriquece y nos llena de energía para continuar con mucha fuerza nuestro diario caminar.

Quizá en verano es cuando más tenemos para compartir. Se viaja, se disfru-tan las áreas al aire libr, se conocen nuevos lugares. La luz del verano nos regala esa oportunidad. Se vive el crecimiento de nuestras ciudades, se viven los colo-res; nuevos parques, nuevos museos, nuevos negocios, nuevos amigos y nuevas rutas se abren para viajar y conectarse con el mundo. Eso es Houston. Eso es The Woodlands y sus alrededores.

Y así como crecen nuestras comunidades, crecen sus necesidades. Sobre todo las relacionadas con los sectores educativos. Por esa razón dialogamos con la Dra. Rebecca Riley, una líder texana amante de la cultura, en cuyas manos está, desde el inicio de este año, la dirección de Lone Star College-Montgomery. Esta institu-ción ubicada en el área de The Woodlands experimenta cambios positivos, gracias al fenómeno de oferta y demanda.

Es un privilegio para la comunidad del condado de Montgomery contar con pro-gramas emblemáticos de educación superior para nuestros jóvenes, y capacitación de calidad para quienes los requieran. Si se trata de cursar una carrera profesio-nal, aprender algo nuevo o capacitarnos en un área específica, las puertas de este centro de estudios superiores están abiertas para todos. Aún para quienes sim-plemente quieren tomar un curso o no cuentan con un título universitario, pueden ingresar a través del departamento de extensión universitaria. Eating Napa Cabbage Benefits You In More Ways Than One › BY MARÍA CLARA DE GREIFF

The Napa cabbage, also known as Nappa cab-bage or Chinese cabbage, has its origins in a region around Beijing,

China. It is widely used in Asian cooking. This cabbage, which is rich in vitamin E and C, has high benefits for the skin, eyes and hair. In addition to this, its generous iodine content helps improve brain function, endo-crine glands and the nervous system.

Here is a delicious Napa cabbage recipe you can try for a fresh salad for summer.

1/4 cup rice vinegar1 teaspoon lime juice2 teaspoons sugar½ teaspoon salt2 teaspoons grated ginger2 teaspoons olive oil2 fresh serrano chilies, finely chopped1 Napa cabbage, cored.1 handful of scallions, finely chopped½ cup finely chopped cilantroThe grated rind of one lime1 teaspoon toasted sesameMix together the rice vinegar, sugar, ginger, lime zest, oil and pepper.

Then add ½ teaspoon salt. Let stand at least half an hour. Incorporate the previously cored Napa cabbage cut into pieces and stir well. Before serv-ing, sprinkle the scallions and sesame on top of the salad.

Además su generoso contenido en yodo ayuda al funcionamiento cerebral, las glándulas endocrinas y el sistema nervioso.He aquí una deliciosa y fresca ensalada para el verano.

1/4 taza de vinagre de arroz1 cucharadita de jugo de lima 2 cucharaditas de azúcar½ cucharadita de sal2 cucharaditas de jengibre rallado2 cucharaditas de aceite de oliva2 chilitos serranos frescos finamente picados1 col de Napa sin corazón.1 manojo de cebollín picado½ taza de cilantro finamente picado.La ralladura de la cáscara de una lima1 cucharadita de ajonjolí tostadoMezclar el vinagre de arroz, el azúcar, el jengibre, la ralladura de lima, el aceite

y el chile. Añadir ½ cucharadita de sal. Dejar reposar al menos media hora. Incorporar a la col de Napa previamente descorazonada y partida en trozos y revolver bien. Antes de servir esparcir el ajonjolí y el cebollín sobre la ensalada.

“From those days I always remember rowing a boat around a small plant island.” 1 The anonymous leading character

evokes the summer he spent living in generous quietness in the house of a scatterbrained widow. The building, a white elephant, had been a country seat first, then an astronomic institute, after that a greenhouse; and lastly, Mrs. Margarita had bought it in order to flood it.

The job of this unknown narrator is to row a boat in the house and listen to Mrs. Margarita, an overweight woman with a golden braid around her head, retell her story. The narrative recounts Mrs. Margarita’s depar-ture from Switzerland, her stay in a small town in Italy, her visit to Spain and her return home on a ship full of people. A journey marked by the effect that water has on Mrs. Margarita ever since she found a fountain in Italy that seemed to be looking at her, which she picked up with her eyes and took with her.

The tale of “The Flooded House” seems to be located in that pecu-liar stage that is a state of dozing. Its author, the Uruguayan Felisberto Hernández, seems to lay on the border between awake and asleep, opening the trunk of experiences and memories and mixing the former and the lat-ter with boundless fantasy.

The play, written in the late ’50s and published in Montevideo in 1960, introduces the reader to a strange aquatic world using a disturbing in addition to creative narrative and a meta-language based on the musicality and fluidity of water.

Hernández’s narrative style in “The Flooded House” in fact resembles a plant that suddenly grew up in an author’s corner. We don’t know where it comes from or where it goes. Hernández himself says that what he is sure of is that he doesn’t know how he writes his stories, because each of them has its own and strange life.

“De esos días siempre recuerdo primero las vueltas en un bote alrededor de una pequeña isla de plantas.” 1 El protagonista anónimo evoca el verano

que pasó, viviendo con tranquilidad generosa, en la casa de una viuda atolon-drada. El edificio, un elefante blanco, había sido primero casa de campo; después instituto astronómico; luego un invernáculo; y, por último, la señora Margarita la había comprado para inundarla.

La labor de este narrador desconocido consiste en remar un bote en la casa y escuchar el relato de boca de la señora Margarita, una mujer gorda, con una trenza dorada alrededor de la cabeza. La historia narra su partida de Suiza, su estadía en una pequeña ciudad de Italia, su visita a España y el regreso a casa a bordo de un barco lleno de gente; una travesía que está marcada por el efecto que el agua pro-voca en la señora Margarita desde que encontró en Italia una fuente que parecía mirarla, y que ella recogería con sus ojos y se llevaría consigo.

El cuento de La casa inundada parece ubicarse en ese estado singular que es la duermevela. Su autor, el uruguayo Felisberto Hernández, se ubica en la frontera entre la vigilia y el sueño abriendo el baúl de las experiencias y los recuerdos y mezclando éstos y aquéllas con una desmedida fantasía.

La obra, escrita en la década de los años ’50 y publicada en Montevideo en 1960, introduce al lector en un extraño mundo acuático valiéndose de una narra-tiva inquietante y creativa y un metalenguaje basado en la musicalidad y fluidez del agua.

El estilo narrativo de Felisberto en La casa inundada parece, de verdad, una planta que creció de pronto en un rincón del autor. No se sabe de dónde viene ni a dónde va. El propio Hernández dice que lo más seguro de todo es que él no sabe cómo hace sus cuentos, porque cada uno de ellos tiene vida extraña y propia.

January is the month of renewal; it is an oppor-tunity to reflect upon our lives, to explore our

dreams and to create plans to achieve our goals. In this edition, Dr. Rebecca Bustamante shares with us a topic which I am sure will leave a mark on your life to begin 2015, the importance of “Mindfulness in Renewal.” It is necessary to focus and avoid distraction in order to be present in the moment in our daily activities and interactions. This is a chance to make small changes to improve our quality of life.

In order to make changes one should take a glance at their life in retrospect. An example of this was what María Baños Jordan, President and founder of the Texas Familias Council and one of our community leaders, has experienced recently. María exclusively shares with ConnexionW readers her recent travel to the “Holly Land.” She affirms that “Our Christian roots are born of the same Jewish tree that flourishes across the desert.” Here she is referring to the amazing olive tree, which can reach 2,000 years old, produces olive oil and can continue to grow over and over again after being burned. The olive tree is also recognized as an ancient symbol of peace. Peace continues to be a matter of concern, as well as the goal of the world.

I would like to take this opportunity to recognize the vision of the founders of The Woodlands Waterway Arts Council (WWAC), who recently celebrated a decade of promoting the arts in this wonderful community. Congratulations!

sueños y crear estrategias para lograrlos. La Doctora Rebecca Bustamante nos comparte en esta edición un tema del cual estoy segura marcará su vida en el inicio de este 2015, la importancia de prestar “Atención plena a la hora de renovarse”. Evitando factores de distracción podemos lograr la concentración necesa-ria para estar verdaderamente presentes en cada una de nuestras actividades diarias. Una invitación a reali-zar pequeños cambios que mejoran la calidad de vida.

Toda renovación implica una retrospección, un mirar hacia atrás. Precisamente eso fue lo que vivió una de las líderes del área, María Baños Jordán, Presidenta y Funda-dora de la organización Texas Familias Council, quien comparte en exclusiva a los lectores de ConnexionW su reciente viaje a la llamada “Tierra Santa”. “Nuestras raíces cristianas nacieron del mismo árbol judío que florece sobre el desierto”, afirma ella. Aquí hace referencia al increíble árbol de olivo que puede alcanzar a vivir 2.000 años, producir aceite, reverdecer después de haber ardido y es el símbolo milenario de la paz. La paz, que sigue siendo motivo de preocupación mundial.

Around spring time, 12th grade students arereceiving letters of acceptance from different

universities and will be confronted with making a decision that can affect them for the rest of their lives. Pamphlets, books and postcards keep arriving, contin-uously trying to convince the young man or woman to select a particular school. But, what must be taken into consideration? One of the most important steps to take during this complex time is a visit to the University. Here is a list of things to accomplish before, during and after the visit.

1.- When? - Visit when students are actively attending the University so that you can see the flow and diversity of the student body. Currently, many univer-sities offer classes throughout the year, so the month or week of the visit does not matter, unless the climate of the city is very cold or very hot, and the students should visit during those extreme climate conditions as they will be facing them on a daily basis.

2.- How to plan? - As obvious as it may sound, make a list of universities the student wants to visit and plan an itinerary for their visit. Then plan the destinations, whether calculating car travel, air travel, travel time from one point to another and time for the actual visit to the university. Also, make a list of questions and topics that the student is interested in, for example, what do students do for the football games?

3.- Meeting with the Administrative Department - Being in contact with the administrative staff is very important since they will be the ones helping solve academic problems that can emerge during those college years; counselors are the ones that approve or disapprove class selection.

En esta época del año los estudiantes del último grado de secun-daria reciben las cartas de aceptación por parte de las universi-

dades y se enfrentarán a una decisión que les puede afectar para el resto de su vida. Panfletos, libros, postales siguen llegando en forma continua, tratando de convencer al joven, pero ¿qué es lo que hay que tener en consideración? Uno de los aspectos más importantes es la visita a la universidad, por lo que a continuación compartimos una pequeña lista para ayudarles en esta tarea.

1.- ¿Cuándo? - Aquí lo importante es visitar cuando los estudian-tes universitarios están activamente atendiendo la universidad, ya que se puede ver el flujo y diversidad del alumnado. Actual-mente hay muchas universidades que ofrecen clases todo el año, por lo que el mes o semana que se visite no es tan vital, a no ser que el clima de la ciudad sea muy frío o muy caluroso; en este caso, convendría visitar en esas fechas ya que el estudiante tendrá que enfrentarse a esas temperaturas durante el cursado.

2.- ¿Cómo planear la visita? - Aunque parezca obvio, se debe escribir una lista de las universidades que desea visitar, hacer un itinerario de ellas para luego planificar los destinos, ya sea calculando viaje en automóvil, viajes de avión, tiempo de demora de un punto a otro, cantidad de tiempo necesaria para la visita. Además es conveniente hacer un listado de preguntas y cosas que al estudiante le interesen, como por ejemplo, ¿qué hacen los estudiantes para los juegos de fútbol americano?

3.- Reuniones con la administración de un departamento específico: El estar en contacto con el personal administrativo es muy importante, ya que ellos serán los que ayuden a resolver problemas que pudiesen presentarse; además los consejeros son los que aprueban o reprueban las materias a seguir.

4.- Visitar la oficina de ayuda financiera - Una de las oficinas que mucha gente se olvida de visitar es la oficina de ayuda financiera. Ésta es la que está a cargo de todas las cuentas, préstamos, becas, pagos, etc. Además ellos pueden ayudar con información de becas particu-lares de la universidad, subvenciones, o formas de pagar un préstamo.

5.- Atender sesiones de información - El fin de atender esta sesión es el poder conocer y escuchar más detalladamente lo que la universidad ofrece, tanto en lo académico como en lo social. La ubicación de las oficinas, las carreras impartidas, la ayuda financiera, las oficinas de terapia, la asistencia de depor-tes, etc., pueden ser mencionadas durante estas sesiones.

Durante la visita no olvide conversar con estudiantes, visitar los dormitorios, probar diferentes casinos, preguntar sobre estaciona-miento, eventos deportivos, eventos religiosos, eventos de negocios, opciones para elegir compañero de cuarto, planes de comida, posibi-lidades para planear un fin de semana o atender una clase. Recuerde que mientras más pregunte, más fácil le será para tomar una decisión de dónde asistir. Y por último, recuerde que el 1 de Mayo es la fecha límite en la cual el estudiante puede contestar a la universidad en la que decidió seguir su carrera universitaria.

4.- Financial Aid Office - Although many people forget to visit the financial aid office, they are the ones that take care of all the charges to a student’s account such as loans, scholarships, payments, etc. In addition they can help with information on specific scholarships, grants or ways to pay back a loan.

5.- Information Sessions - Attending informative sessions will help the student learn in more detail about what the university has to offer in all aspects. Academics, clubs and organizations, specific campus locations, majors, sports and counseling services are usually explained during these sessions.

During the visit be sure to talk with students, visit the dorms, ask questions about parking, sporting events, religious events, business events, and options on how to choose a roommate, meal plans, and if possible spend a weekend or attend a class. Take notes, pictures and videos; a major decision will soon need to be made, as May 1st is the last day to accept or deny a college offer.

Musical festivals around the world are a great opportunity to delve into a certain musical genre. Downtown

Houston was host on July 12, to the Colombian Fest, one of the most widely attended and best known annual events in the United States, which celebrates the independence of this South American country. Connexion W was there to talk with two of the world’s salsa masters: Tito Nieves and Felipe González.

The golden age of this musical genre dates back to the 70´s, 80´s and some of the 90´s; for that reason we took the opportunity to ask these two renowned singers to describe in their own words how this rhythm is lived today.

Luis Felipe González:“salsa is an Afro Caribbean rhythm. Globalization has allowed more peo-ple get to know things from the past and things from the present. This has allowed some music to remain and have a projection within the world of young people.”

“The largest migration of Cubans to New York led to the fusion and the phenomenon that salsa pro-duced in the 70´s and 80´s. That made it unique. It has gone on to become a collector’s item, but new mixtures replicate it. These types of fusions in the music have always been there.”

“Those who are over 40 years old have always found a shelter in the lyrics, melody and rhythm in salsa to add the missing touch to a party”.

Tito Nieves: “Oscar Leon, Marc Anthony, Victor Manuel, Gilberto Santarosa, Grupo Niche, all these artists are traveling around the world. salsa is still in style. People take the time to learn how to dance salsa. salsa never dies. It has an advantage, which is that it is over a hundred years (of existence).

“salsa is what runs through my veins. salsa for me, is the beating of my heart.”

Los festivales musicales alrededor del mundo son una gran oportunidad para adentrarnos en determinado género musical. El 12 de julio se llevó a cabo

en el centro de Houston el Colombian Fest, uno de los eventos más concurridos y conocidos en Estados Unidos, que toma lugar cada año para celebrar la indepen-dencia del país suramericano. Connexion W estuvo ahí para dialogar con dos de

los maestros de la salsa en el mundo: Tito Nieves y Luis Felipe González.

La época de oro de este género musical se remonta a los años 70, 80 y algo de los 90, por tal razón aprove-chamos para pedirles a estos dos reconocidos cantan-tes que en sus propias palabras describieran cómo se vive actualmente este ritmo.

Luis Felipe González:“La salsa es un ritmo afrocaribeño. La globalización ha permitido que más gente llegue a conocer cosas del pasado y cosas del presente. Eso ha hecho que alguna música se quede y tenga proyección dentro de mundo de la gente joven”.

“La migración grande de cubanos a Nueva York pro-vocó esa fusión y ese fenómeno que produjo la salsa en los años 70 y 80. Eso que hoy se hace irrepetible. Pasa a ser colección, pero se va a replicar en nuevas mez-clas. Esas fusiones de la música se han dado siempre”.

“Quienes tienen más de 40 años siempre han visto en la salsa un refugio en letra, un refugio en melodía y en ritmo, para ponerle el toque que le hace falta a una fiesta”.

Tito Nieves:“Oscar de Leon, Marc Anthony, Victor Manuel, Gilberto Santarosa, Grupo Niche, todos estos artistas están via-jando por el mundo. La salsa sigue por todo lo alto. La gente se toma el tiempo de aprender a bailar salsa. La salsa nunca muere. Houston Can Help New Americans Thrive › BY BRENDA KIRK

What an exciting time to be in Houston: we live in one of the fastest-growing cities in the country with

substantial demographic changes taking place within less than one generation. Houston, with its vibrant patchwork of immigrant communi-ties, offers a glimpse of what the United States will look like in a not-too-distant future. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, immigrants make up more than 22 percent of Houston’s population, almost double that of 1990.

In view of that, the ways in which our community regards and wel-comes immigrants will affect our overall success and growth.

Effective approaches will help build up our city’s economic competitive-ness and community relationships. Immigrants in Houston must have the ability to participate fully in all these areas.

Leading up to the recent launch of a nationwide effort to build an Immigration 2020 agenda ensuring that new Americans have the opportuni-ties, skills and status to reach their full-est potential, local leaders have been thoughtful in discussing the solutions that Houston needs to meet these challenges.

I’ve met with Houston leaders from faith, law enforcement, business and educational organizations, all of whom value moving this conversation forward and understand its high stakes in their sectors, in our city and in our country.

Houston employers and educators should promote access to the nec-essary skills and knowledge to meet our city’s needs. And we ought to promote naturalization so that everyone can be fully invested in their communities. But that’s just the beginning.

Our city has the potential to have meaningful influence in addressing immigration locally, across sectors and on policies both public and private, while the debate on immigration reform nationally remains in limbo.

Choosing to ignore this opportunity would be a waste for all of us. Foreign-born Houstonians in the metro area make up 29 percent of the workforce and own 31 percent of all businesses. Not appreciating this growth and the possibilities would be shortsighted.

New Americans bring with them richly diverse perspectives and expe-riences that are essential contributions for a society to thrive. Throughout our history, standing together as a nation of immigrants is what has made our organizations, businesses and neighborhoods exceptional — and we need to continue pushing for solu-tions that uphold this heritage.

And ultimately, we cannot forget that this is about people. We can-not accept anti-immigrant rhet-oric and policies that divide and de-humanize our community. Even beyond politics, we can work toward new solutions that benefit both the native- and foreign-born among us.

Standing on shared values in cre-ating immigration solutions will move our nation forward and spur progress for generations to come.

Houston puede ayudar a que los nuevos estadounidenses prosperen

Éste es un muy buen momento para estar en Houston: vivimos en una de las ciudades de mayor crecimiento en el país, con importantes cambios demo-

gráficos que toman lugar en menos de una generación. Houston, con su vibrante mosaico de comunidades de inmigrantes, vislumbra cuál será el panorama de cómo se verán los Estados Unidos en un futuro no tan lejano. De acuerdo a la Oficina del Censo de los Estados Unidos, los inmigrantes representan más del 22 por ciento de la población de Houston, casi el doble que en 1990.

Por lo tanto, la forma en que nuestra comunidad recibe y da la bienvenida a los inmigrantes afectará nuestro éxito y crecimiento general.

Los empleadores y educadores de Houston deberían promover el acceso a las habilidadesy conocimientos adecuados, que cubran las necesidades existentes en nuestra ciudad. Y es nuestro deber promover la naturalización así cada una de estas personas puede involucrarse completamente en el quehacer de su comuni-dad. Pero eso es solo el principio.

Nuestra ciudad tiene el potencial de tener una influencia significativa en discutir el tema de la inmigración a nivel local, en todos los sectores y las políticas públicas y priva-das, mientras que el debate de la inmigración permanece en el limbo a nivel nacional.

A través de nuestra historia, el permanecer unidos como una nación de inmigrantes es lo que ha hecho de nuestras organizaciones, negocios y vecindarios algo excepcional y necesitamos continuar luchando por lograr solucio-nes que nos ayuden a mantener esa herencia.

Y, finalmente, no podemos olvidarnos que se trata de la gente. No podemos aceptar una retórica anti-inmigrante y políticas que dividan y deshumanicen nues-tra comunidad. Incluso más allá de la política, podemos trabajar hacia nuevas soluciones que beneficien tanto a quienes nacieron aquí como a los que vienen de otros países y están entre nosotros.

Permanecer con firmeza sobre los valores compartidos en la creación de solu-ciones de inmigración, hará que nuestra nación vaya hacia adelante y estimulará el progreso para las generaciones venideras.

AUSTIN. - In order to strengthen ties and give a new drive to the relations between Mexico and Texas, Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs, José Antonio Meade Kuribreña, recently met with the Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott.

Secretary Meade and Governor Abbott spoke about strengthening reciprocal opportunities such as border infrastructure, academic mobility, energy and migration.

In the meeting, Meade Kuribeña stressed the importance of the contributions made by the Mexican community to the economy and soci-ety of this state, as well as the courage to tackle security challenges together, especially at the common border.

In particular, he emphasized in the energy reform, the competitive advantages in this sec-tor and the spaces for the Texan companies to invest in Mexico.

For his part, Governor Abbott pointed out the importance of the meeting and emphasized the historical, economic and cultural value that Mexico and Texas share.

“It has been an honor to receive Secretary Meade, and talk about our border relationship and the importance of making more solid ties in cul-ture, history and economy,” said the Texan leader.

Mexico is Texas’ first commercial partner.

Por su parte, el gobernador Abbott, destacó la importancia del encuentro y recalcó el valor histórico, económico y cultural que comparten México y Texas.

“Ha sido un honor recibir al secretario Meade y hablar de nuestra relación fron-teriza y la importancia de hacer más sólidos los lazos culturales, históricos y eco-nómicos”, dijo el mandatario texano.

“Let’s go! Let’s go! Come on, you’re going to miss the bus! Did you make your lunch? It’s not my responsibility. Did

you brush your teeth yet? Let’s go! I’m leaving… Now!”These are words heard in almost every household with school-age chil-

dren on that first week of school. Whether you are ready or not, it’s time to start gearing your children up for back to school.

Switching from laid-back summer fun time to rules, homework, rou-tines, and new teachers can scare parents and children alike. Nonetheless, a little preparation, a positive attitude and plenty of smiles will make this transition as smooth as possible.

Stay PositiveAs we approach that first day of school, children view and pick up clues

from their parents. They react and often magnify what parents are say-ing, thinking and feeling. Therefore, if parents make an effort to set them at ease, it will go a long way towards making the transition easier. To set a positive expectation about the school year, parents can say words like “I feel you are a little nervous going into that classroom, but I really think you’re going to be fine.” To help children be ready to respond to a chal-lenging situation parents may also say: “you probably are going to have new kids in your class that are waiting to meet new friends, can you be that one?”.

Create RoutinesEstablishing daily routines at home for at least one month before the

start of the school year can also help children adjust. Routines need to be modeled in a way that shows kids what to do; if you are asking your child to make lunch for school, you should make your lunch for work, too. Working together on expectations helps families cope with those challeng-ing mornings or nightly homework.

For younger children, create a checklist or flowcharts with pictures of tasks to help get them organized and stay on schedule. “Getting dressed, brushing teeth, eating breakfast, getting backpack, heading out to school” can be checked off daily, diminishing that morning anxiety and rush. It also teaches them responsibility for their actions. As an added incentive, use stars and stickers to show a completed task.

In the afternoon, schedule a routine for homework, snacks, and extra-curricular activities. A good idea is giving them a snack as soon as they get back from school, as some lunch periods are very early and by the time children get home they are very hungry. For bedtime routines, start early in August setting earlier bedtimes until a week before school starts, when the time should be the same as that of the regular school year. Remember that children between the ages of 5 and 12 need 10 to 11 hours of sleep.

Listos o no, es tiempo de preparar a nuestros hijos para ese famoso regreso a la escuela.

El cambio de una vida divertida y sin reglas ni horarios, a las tareas, las rutinas y los nuevos maestros causa ansiedad por igual en padres y niños. Sin embargo, con un poco de preparación, una actitud positiva y un montón de sonrisas, esta transición se hará en forma gradual y positiva.

Sea positivoA medida que nos acercamos al primer día de escuela, los niños van viendo y

aprendiendo de acciones y reacciones de sus padres. Palabras como: “siento que estás un poco nervioso por ir a ese nuevo salón de clases, pero entiendo que vas a estar bien”; o “probablemente vas a tener nuevos compañeros en la clase que están esperando conocer nuevos amigos y tú puedes ser uno de ellos”, ofrecen una expectativa positiva sobre el año escolar y ayudan a los niños a estar prepara-dos para responder a una situación desafiante y que puede causarles miedo.

Cree rutinasEl establecimiento de rutinas diarias en el hogar, por lo menos un mes antes

del inicio del año escolar, también puede ayudar a los niños a regular sus hora-rios. Estas rutinas deben ser modeladas por el adulto mostrando qué hacer: si usted le está pidiendo a su hijo que prepare el almuerzo del día siguiente para la escuela, usted debe hacer también su almuerzo para su trabajo. Trabajando en conjunto padres e hijos, ayuda a entender qué se espera de ellos y también ayuda a las familias a sobrepasar esas mañanas difíciles o el hecho de tener que hacer las tareas por las noches.

Para los niños más pequeños, es bueno crear una lista con casilleros de tareas para ayudarlos a organizarse: vestirse, cepillarse los dientes, desayunar, preparar la mochila, ir a la escuela, pueden marcarse diariamente, disminuyendo esa ansie-dad de las mañanas. Además les enseña a ser responsables por sus acciones.

Por la tarde, programe una rutina diaria para hacer las tareas y actividades extracurriculares. Una buena idea es darles algo de comer tan pronto como lle-guen de la escuela, ya que algunos períodos de almuerzo son muy temprano y los niños llegan a casa muy hambrientos. Para dormir, comience a principios de agosto con el ajuste de horario: irse a la cama más temprano cada día hasta lle-gar al horario que se usará cuando el niño vaya a la escuela; es recomendable que ya para la semana previa al comienzo de la escuela este horario esté en efecto. Recuerde que los niños de entre 5 y 12 de edad necesitan 10 a 11 horas de sueño.

College costs are growing at a significant rate. Paying for a child’s or grandchild’s college education tomorrow

requires forward thinking and planning today.FACT: In the past 10 years, the average inflation-adjusted cost of tuition

and fees has risen by 26% at private four-year colleges and just under 66% at four-year public colleges.1

How should parents or grandparents save for tomorrow? Let’s examine two ways these adults can save for a child’s college education – a Section 529 Plan and another lesser-known alternative – permanent, participat-ing Whole Life Insurance. In addition to protection, Whole Life insurance can create a long-term accumulation product. Whole Life Insurance pro-vides death benefit protection and guaranteed cash values for the whole of life as long as the required premiums are paid. Costs for these benefits are reflected in lower cash values in the early years of the policy. When a con-sumer uses the product for these purposes, they should have an adequate time horizon in order for the cash values to grow. The age of the child should be a consideration in the eventual savings solution chosen.

Key Considerations When Funding a Section 529 Plan1. What if the child does not attend college? The growth on the money

could become taxable and subject to potential penalties if it’s with-drawn for other uses.

2. The money in a 529 Plan is subject to loss due to investment and market risk.3. 529 Plans are not “self-completing,” should a parent or grandparent

Top Reasons to Include Whole Life Insurance as a College Funding Option:

1. The “education plan” can become self-completing in the event of a premature death or disability.

2. The gains within the policy are “locked in” versus being subject to investment market fluctuations.

3. Tax-favored access to cash throughout the policy owner’s life.4. Eligibility for financial aid is typically not affected by the existence of

a life policy.5. The policy owner is in control of the assets instead of the child, as

A native Texan humanist from Lubbock and an artist, Dr. Rebecca Riley is certain that education is the way.

Right from the beginning, Riley demonstrated her good sense of humor and simplicity in answering our questions. When we asked her in which language she preferred the interview, smiling, she answered in perfect Spanish: “from time to time I need to speak in English.”

Since 1995, when she began working at Lone Star College-Kingwood as an arts professor, she has held different positions within the educa-tional system, both in the academic and administrative areas over the last 20 years. Riley studied Fine Arts and obtained a doctorate degree in Leadership for Higher Education.

Alba Malaver: What are your goals as President of Lone Star College Montgomery?Rebecca Riley: I have two aims with this college that go beyond just growth. One is to enhance our undergraduate research programs including humanities. I also hope to bring forth some of our unique workforce programs to enable them to truly become flagship programs and that includes the Live Entertainment Technology program. We train students who will work at concert venues and big churches that are all mediated in theater and so forth. Ours is the only program of its kind in this region.

Another unique program is our biotechnology program. Our students are being hired right out of that program by very prestigious labs. We are about to have three new hospitals opening nearby, so our health programs will thereby have to grow.

We also have agreements established in the area. Many nearby companies will be able to hire them right away.

AM: Why do you say that Lone Star is a great opportunity for any student?

RR: There are lots of reasons. The cost is very affordable. It is a tiny fraction of the cost of private universities. At the same time, students get quality in their education. There are 20-25 students per group, which means more attention by the professor in case a student is having trouble. We have large labs, excellent facilities, great instructors and all this at a fraction of the cost.

AM: Taking in consideration the exponential growth of the population in the area, what measures are being taken for Lone Star College to grow?

We will have to grow some of our existing programs and develop new ones because of the population growth and the needs of our community.

Also, I’m creating a Hispanic advisory board to help me understand the best way to reach these families and their potential students, who might need assistance in learning what they need to enter the university. To be able to lead a decent life in this country you must have credentials (degrees).

Through the Continuing Education Area, we offer the ESOL program; English for Speakers of Other Languages, which has been designed for anyone, that needs it regardless of his/her professional level.

En 1995 comenzó a trabajar en Lone Star College-Kingwood como profesora de artes. Durante 20 años de servicio ha ocupado diferentes puestos dentro de este sistema educativo, tanto en el área académica como administrativa. Estudió Bellas Artes y obtuvo un título doctoral en Liderazgo para la Educación Superior.

Alba Malaver: ¿Cuáles son sus objetivos como Presidenta de Lone Star College Montgomery?Rebecca Riley: Tengo dos objetivos particulares con esta universidad, que van más allá de hacerla ampliar. Uno es mejorar nuestros programas de investigación de pregrado, incluyendo el de humanidades. Esperamos también hacer emble-máticos nuestros programas para la fuerza laboral. We all remember our first bike as well as the times we fell on the ground trying to keep the balance going

forward. The only protection between the walkway and us were our hel-mets, elbow and kneepads. After many attempts, tears and frustration, the smile on our faces was the best prize for the victory of riding our bikes on our own, without any adults helping us.

The Houston Bicycle Museum opened its doors just a few months ago in remembrance of those times and bringing the story of this fun and useful vehicle to our city. There you’ll find on display collections of antique and classic bicycles in addition to cycle related memorabilia. The Museum cov-ers the spectrum of cycling from the very beginning in the mid-1850s, at its infancy and chronicling its evolution through today’s more sophisti-cated bikes.

Joy Boone, the founder, explained to Connexion W how this museum – that is a non-profit organization – came to life.

“We bought a foreclosure property with the idea of using the first floor as a bike museum. We owned a bike shop, where we bought bikes, saved them and now we have a bunch of interesting ones. Can’t say they’re all antiques, but some of them are around 56 years old,” she said.

The museum provides an informative and educational glimpse of how the bicycle and cycling have influenced our form of transportation, our leisure activities, our culture, our society, and our lives. It also explains how, by using the developing technologies of each era, the bicycle has pro-gressed in our ever-changing world.

“We hope people will come through and talk about their first bike and how it made them feel. I think that’s the most universal thing around the world. Everybody had a bike and the first time they were able to get out of the house and get away from mom and ride to freedom, they all remember that,” said Boone.

Boone shared a final message for visitors and the younger generations: “Be active, lay your devices down, go out and use your brain to explore the world.”

Dark circles tend to show up for various reasons.

Sometimes they are the result of a poor circulation around the eyes, in other cases due to hyperpigmentation (which is the dark color around the eyelid that detracts from the fresh-ness of your face). They can also be related to a person’s health, lack of sleep, fatigue, over exposure to the sun, unhealthy eating or simply age. Home treatments:• Cold cucumber slices on the eyelids• Cold chamomile tea applied with cotton pads• Raw potato slices• Warm and cold water compresses to stimulate the liquid drainage of eye bags when they are swollen.• The cosmetics industry has brought to the market creams and gels that help to drain, reduce and cover this annoying cosmetic problem.

Recommendations to avoid the appearance of dark circles:• Have a good rest• Avoid meals with too much salt, as salt retains liquid.• Wear sun glasses• Wash your face with cold water, always• Use special creams for eyelids• Try to sleep on your back to pro mote the drainage of fluids from the eyelids

When dark circles become extreme especially in adults, another option is Blepharoplasty. This outpatient sur-gery is performed by a plastic sur-geon that removes the eye bags and removes the excess of skin, so the face recovers its freshness.

Alliance for the ArtsThe Colombian Young Philharmonic joins the

Houston Symphony for a Special Appearance The Colombian Young Philharmonic, under the direction of, Andrés

Orozco-Estrada, the renowned Colombian Maestro, concluded their special performances in Houston on July 16, and July 17, 2015, with two concerts at Jones Hall.

The concert featured the interpretation of Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana,” one of the 20th century’s most important works; performed by the joint alliance of the Houston Symphony, the Houston Symphony Chorus, the Colombian Young Philharmonic and the Houston Children’s Chorus.

To commemorate this special occasion, the Symphony held a private dinner prior to Friday’s concert for patrons and invited special guests. Mark C. Hanson, Executive Director and CEO of the Houston Symphony was profoundly happy with the success of this type of alliance which the arts on globally.

Alianza por las artes

La Filarmónica Joven de Colombia se presentó junto a la Sinfónica de Houston

El 16 y 17 de julio, bajo la dirección del reconocido maestro colombiano Andrés Orozco-Estrada, la Filarmónica Joven de Colombia cerró su visita a Houston con dos conciertos en el Jones Hall junto a la Sinfónica de Houston, el Coro Sinfónico de Houston y el Coro de Niños de Houston.

Durante la velada que se vivió a teatro lleno, esta unión de talentos musicales internacionales se dio a la tarea de interpretar Carmina Burana, una de las obras más apreciadas en el siglo XX.

Como antesala a la presentación del viernes, la Sinfónica ofreció una cena pri-vada a la que asistieron patrocinadores e invitados especiales.

Mark C. Hanson, director ejecutivo y CEO de la Sinfónica de Houston, se mostró profundamente complacido con el resultado de este tipo de alianzas que aportan al desarrollo de las artes tanto a nivel local como a nivel global.

The Rebozo Parade – A Fashion ShowThe Consulate General of Mexico, the gov-ernment of the Mexican state of San Luis Potosi and the Mexico Tourism Board carried out a colorful fashion show to promote the use of the Rebozo, long Mexican shawls, which have a vari-ety of uses. The event took place on June 24, at the Junior League of Houston.

The rebozo is much more than a typical garment, it is also an artistic representation of Mexico as well as an inseparable com-panion of Mexican women for many centuries.

January is the month of renewal; it is an oppor-tunity to reflect upon our lives, to explore our

dreams and to create plans to achieve our goals. In this edition, Dr. Rebecca Bustamante shares with us a topic which I am sure will leave a mark on your life to begin 2015, the importance of “Mindfulness in Renewal.” It is necessary to focus and avoid distraction in order to be present in the moment in our daily activities and interactions. This is a chance to make small changes to improve our quality of life.

In order to make changes one should take a glance at their life in retrospect. An example of this was what María Baños Jordan, President and founder of the Texas Familias Council and one of our community leaders, has experienced recently. María exclusively shares with ConnexionW readers her recent travel to the “Holly Land.” She affirms that “Our Christian roots are born of the same Jewish tree that flourishes across the desert.” Here she is referring to the amazing olive tree, which can reach 2,000 years old, produces olive oil and can continue to grow over and over again after being burned. The olive tree is also recognized as an ancient symbol of peace. Peace continues to be a matter of concern, as well as the goal of the world.

I would like to take this opportunity to recognize the vision of the founders of The Woodlands Waterway Arts Council (WWAC), who recently celebrated a decade of promoting the arts in this wonderful community. Congratulations!

Enero es un mes para renacer. Es tiempo para reflexionar sobre nuestra vida, hablar de nuestros

sueños y crear estrategias para lograrlos. La Doctora Rebecca Bustamante nos comparte en esta edición un tema del cual estoy segura marcará su vida en el inicio de este 2015, la importancia de prestar “Atención plena a la hora de renovarse”. Evitando factores de distracción podemos lograr la concentración necesa-ria para estar verdaderamente presentes en cada una de nuestras actividades diarias. Una invitación a reali-zar pequeños cambios que mejoran la calidad de vida.

Toda renovación implica una retrospección, un mirar hacia atrás. Precisamente eso fue lo que vivió una de las líderes del área, María Baños Jordán, Presidenta y Funda-dora de la organización Texas Familias Council, quien comparte en exclusiva a los lectores de ConnexionW su reciente viaje a la llamada “Tierra Santa”. “Nuestras raíces cristianas nacieron del mismo árbol judío que florece sobre el desierto”, afirma ella. Aquí hace referencia al increíble árbol de olivo que puede alcanzar a vivir 2.000 años, producir aceite, reverdecer después de haber ardido y es el símbolo milenario de la paz. La paz, que sigue siendo motivo de preocupación mundial.

Aprovecho la oportunidad para agradecer y resaltar la visión y entrega de los directores fundadores de The Woodlands Waterway Arts Council (WWAC) quienes recientemente celebraron una década de promoción de las artes en la comunidad. ¡Felicidades!

Around spring time, 12th grade students arereceiving letters of acceptance from different

universities and will be confronted with making a decision that can affect them for the rest of their lives. Pamphlets, books and postcards keep arriving, contin-uously trying to convince the young man or woman to select a particular school. But, what must be taken into consideration? One of the most important steps to take during this complex time is a visit to the University. Here is a list of things to accomplish before, during and after the visit.

1.- When? - Visit when students are actively attending the University so that you can see the flow and diversity of the student body. Currently, many univer-sities offer classes throughout the year, so the month or week of the visit does not matter, unless the climate of the city is very cold or very hot, and the students should visit during those extreme climate conditions as they will be facing them on a daily basis.

2.- How to plan? - As obvious as it may sound, make a list of universities the student wants to visit and plan an itinerary for their visit. Then plan the destinations, whether calculating car travel, air travel, travel time from one point to another and time for the actual visit to the university. Also, make a list of questions and topics that the student is interested in, for example, what do students do for the football games?

3.- Meeting with the Administrative Department - Being in contact with the administrative staff is very important since they will be the ones helping solve academic problems that can emerge during those college years; counselors are the ones that approve or disapprove class selection.

¿Por qué es importante visitar las universidades?

En esta época del año los estudiantes del último grado de secun-daria reciben las cartas de aceptación por parte de las universi-

dades y se enfrentarán a una decisión que les puede afectar para el resto de su vida. Panfletos, libros, postales siguen llegando en forma continua, tratando de convencer al joven, pero ¿qué es lo que hay que tener en consideración? Uno de los aspectos más importantes es la visita a la universidad, por lo que a continuación compartimos una pequeña lista para ayudarles en esta tarea.

1.- ¿Cuándo? - Aquí lo importante es visitar cuando los estudian-tes universitarios están activamente atendiendo la universidad, ya que se puede ver el flujo y diversidad del alumnado. Actual-mente hay muchas universidades que ofrecen clases todo el año, por lo que el mes o semana que se visite no es tan vital, a no ser que el clima de la ciudad sea muy frío o muy caluroso; en este caso, convendría visitar en esas fechas ya que el estudiante tendrá que enfrentarse a esas temperaturas durante el cursado.

2.- ¿Cómo planear la visita? - Aunque parezca obvio, se debe escribir una lista de las universidades que desea visitar, hacer un itinerario de ellas para luego planificar los destinos, ya sea calculando viaje en automóvil, viajes de avión, tiempo de demora de un punto a otro, cantidad de tiempo necesaria para la visita. Además es conveniente hacer un listado de preguntas y cosas que al estudiante le interesen, como por ejemplo, ¿qué hacen los estudiantes para los juegos de fútbol americano?

3.- Reuniones con la administración de un departamento específico: El estar en contacto con el personal administrativo es muy importante, ya que ellos serán los que ayuden a resolver problemas que pudiesen presentarse; además los consejeros son los que aprueban o reprueban las materias a seguir.

4.- Visitar la oficina de ayuda financiera - Una de las oficinas que mucha gente se olvida de visitar es la oficina de ayuda financiera. Ésta es la que está a cargo de todas las cuentas, préstamos, becas, pagos, etc. Además ellos pueden ayudar con información de becas particu-lares de la universidad, subvenciones, o formas de pagar un préstamo.

5.- Atender sesiones de información - El fin de atender esta sesión es el poder conocer y escuchar más detalladamente lo que la universidad ofrece, tanto en lo académico como en lo social. La ubicación de las oficinas, las carreras impartidas, la ayuda financiera, las oficinas de terapia, la asistencia de depor-tes, etc., pueden ser mencionadas durante estas sesiones.

Durante la visita no olvide conversar con estudiantes, visitar los dormitorios, probar diferentes casinos, preguntar sobre estaciona-miento, eventos deportivos, eventos religiosos, eventos de negocios, opciones para elegir compañero de cuarto, planes de comida, posibi-lidades para planear un fin de semana o atender una clase. Recuerde que mientras más pregunte, más fácil le será para tomar una decisión de dónde asistir. Y por último, recuerde que el 1 de Mayo es la fecha límite en la cual el estudiante puede contestar a la universidad en la que decidió seguir su carrera universitaria.

4.- Financial Aid Office - Although many people forget to visit the financial aid office, they are the ones that take care of all the charges to a student’s account such as loans, scholarships, payments, etc. In addition they can help with information on specific scholarships, grants or ways to pay back a loan.

5.- Information Sessions - Attending informative sessions will help the student learn in more detail about what the university has to offer in all aspects. Academics, clubs and organizations, specific campus locations, majors, sports and counseling services are usually explained during these sessions.

During the visit be sure to talk with students, visit the dorms, ask questions about parking, sporting events, religious events, business events, and options on how to choose a roommate, meal plans, and if possible spend a weekend or attend a class. Take notes, pictures and videos; a major decision will soon need to be made, as May 1st is the last day to accept or deny a college offer.
