Welcome to CONSEC 2016On the behalf of the Organizing and the Scientific Committee of the 8th

international conference on concrete under severe conditions-environ-ment & loading (CONSEC 2016), it is our pleasure to welcome you in Lecco.Thank you for attending CONSEC 2016 which is organized by Politecnico di Mi-lano in cooperation with CTE (Italian Council for Building Industrialization) and is supported by both fib (The International Federation for Structural Concrete) and Rilem (The International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems and Structures).

CONSEC conference has come to the 8th edition: Sapporo (Japan, 1995), Tromsø (Norway, 1998), Vancouver (Canada, 2001), Seoul (Korea, 2004), Tours (France, 2007), Merida (Mexico, 2010) and Nanjing (China, 2013) guested before this suc-cessfull event.

The CONSEC16 proceedings contain over 150 high quality peer-reviewed scienti-fic papers aligned to the main topics of CONSEC tradition.

During the preparation of this edition, two members of the Steering Board, Eric Moreno and Odd E. Gjørv, passed away. They significantly contributed to the research investigation on durability of concrete and to the development of this scientific event: the proceedings are dedicated to them. The conference is ope-ned by a special session in their memory, to highlight their lesson and to witness the heritage left us, aimed at producing better concrete under severe conditions.

We would like to thank the Steering Board of CONSEC for the invitation to orga-nize CONSEC 2016 at Politecnico di Milano and the Sponsors - Bekaert, Controls, Cervenka Consulting, PermeaTORR, Arup, Basf and Gavazzi for the financial sup-port that contributed significantly to the quality of the services chosen for the Conference. The work of the Scientific Committee has been sincerely apprecia-ted. We would like also to express our gratitude to all the authors for their va-luable contributions and all the partecipants for their interest in the Conference.

We hope that all of you will enjoy CONSEC 2016 and have a pleasant and fruitful stay in Lecco.

Matteo Colombo (Chair of Organizing Committee)

Marco di Prisco (Chair of the Scientific Committee)

Message from the Steering BoardCivil infrastructure remains a vital component of any country’s socio-economic progress. This includes the water, energy, communications and transportation infrastructure we rely on and the commercial, industrial, institutional and resi-dential buildings we routinely use. Around the globe we currently have a record $3.8 trillion invested in various construction projects with $800 billion invested in the US alone. Along with its immense economic promise, the construction sector faces huge sustainability challenges. The carbon footprint of the sector remains uncomfor-tably high and is growing rapidly. A major contributor to green-house gases is the lack of durability in our structures that deteriorate rapidly and get replaced too often requiring huge material resources. A fail-safe way to reduce the carbon fo-ot-print of our structures is to ensure that they are durable, fully functional, safe, and provide a long service life. Since its inception in Japan in 1995, and the continuing successes in Norway, Canada, Korea, France, Mexico and China, CONSEC conferences have become a cherished tradition in all prominent ‘concrete’ circles. CONSEC Proceedings re-main some of the most cited literary archives. On behalf of the CONSEC Steering Board, it gives me a great pleasure to welcome you to CONSEC 2016 in beautiful Lecco, Italy. Among us are nearly 200 participan-ts from 41 countries who will present 160 peer-reviewed papers over the next three days. Steering Board would like to take the opportunity to thank Professors Marco di Prisco and Matteo Colombo for their dedicated service as the Chairs of CON-SEC2016, to their Organizational Team for their countless hours of assistance, to the many reviewers who so generously gave their time to ensure scientific accu-racy of the papers, and to the generous sponsors for their unstinting support to see CONSEC2016 succeed. Finally, I would be remiss if I did not express my deepest commiserations for our two dear departed friends Odd Gjørv and Eric Moreno. These luminaries con-tributed immensely to the advancement of CONSEC, for which we shall remain indebted forever. Respectfully,

Nemkumar (Nemy) Banthia(Chairman of CONSEC Steering Board)

For this reason, if you are not yet registered, we kindly ask you to go to the Help Desk for the registration where the staff will provide your personal credentials to access the wi-fi.

Conference venueThe conference will be held at Polo di Lecco that is one of se-ven international campuses of the Politecnico di Milano. Ever since 2006, year in which the Master Programmes in English were first introduced, the pre-sence of international studentshas steadily increased. In the first seven years of these programmes, a to-tal of 621 students from all over the world have participated.Today, 19% of the entire student population who lives and studies in Lecco, and which amounts to more than 1,600, are foreign students. This con-stant growth rate seems to predict greater international participation in the near future.Consequently, our campus is a multicultural platform where students can practice and improve their knowledge of English as well as develop long-lasting friendships with others from diverse linguistic and ethnic backgrounds.Polo di Lecco have a brand new university campus: 40,000 m2 dedicated to instruction, research and student services. This means modern classro-oms where innovative teaching can take place, “state-of-the-arts” labs, and on-campus living space for 204 international and non-resident in Lec-co students.

SOCIAL EVENTSIce Breaking - NH Hotel Ponte Vecchio (Via Azzone Visconti 84)Sunday 11th Sept. - 18.00 Meeting directly at NH Hotel (see Map of the city)On Sunday evening an Ice Breaking will allow all the conference partecipants to meet and send some time together befor the beginning of the conference. Du-ring the Ice Breaking the Conference registration will be open giving the possibi-lity to collect proceedings and all the material.

Classical music concert at Lecco San Nicolò CathedralMonday 12th Sept. - 21.00 Meeting directly at Basilica (see Map of the city)Conference participants will have the opportunity to attend a classical music con-cert that will be held in the beautiful Basilica of San Nicolò. The church is an ancient Romanesque Basilica of the 11th century and is dedicated to the saint patron of sailors. The church was then enlarged in the following three centuries. After a long period of raids and damage, the 17th century marked a time of great revival. The décor was restored and new furnishing added. Between 1830 and 1862, the architect Giuseppe Bovara gave the building its present neoclassical appearance. Nowadays the church contains 17th century furniture, a baptismal font of 1596, Romanesque parts of the 11th century and a chapel decorated with stories of St. Anthony (dated late 14th century).

In 1902-1904 Giovanni Ceruti designed the neo-gothic bell tower, which was erected on the base of one of the towers of the medieval walls. The tower rises

over the city with its 96 meters and is its undisputed symbol.

Conference Banquet in Medieval CastleTuesday 13th Sept. - 19.30 bus pick up at conference venueThe conference banquet will be held on Thusday evening in the atmosphere of an old medieval castle.

The building was expanded in 1200 and the court lost its characteristic central structure. The most ancient remains of the center are still visible in the facade that faces the cemetery. It originally consisted of four aligned buildings built on two levels, plus a basement, a tower, a wall bordering the Castle and the Church.

It is said that the construction of this Castle was desired by Cardinal Beltramino, who was the most influential character of the Parravicini family alive during the first half of the sixteenth century. However, a document from the parish archives refers to the birth of Beltramino taking place inside the Castle, leaving us to belie-ve that it was not he who founded the castle, but rather the one that restored it and brought it to splendor.

The actual founding date goes back to 900 AD when a military outpost arose on the plateau, in which two vaulted entrances led to the square center, and inside the court there was a well. First floor and square tower dates back to 1100.
