Conservation Comment Since 2014, the NC Zoo and other partners have studied pine barrens tree frogs using radio telemetry. Tiny belts are placed on the frogs so they can be tracked over a period of time to see how they use their habitat. About pine barrens treefrogs: Found in the longleaf pine forests and sandhills of south-central North Carolina. Pine barrens treefrog tadpoles thrive in wetlands that have a higher acidity level in which other tadpole species cannot survive. No competition! Pine barrens treefrog populations are thought to be declining due to habitat loss. The data collected by our research will help us learn more about our impact on this species and establish the best practices for their management.
