Whether or not to make a child go to youth group is a common dilemma among parents of high school age teen- agers. You might be thinking, “My teen- ager doesn’t want to go to youth group, but I want them to learn their faith and be involved in our church. Should I force them against their will?” The answer to the question could be yes or no. A parent once told me that she had decided not to make her kids go to youth group be- cause they were already so involved in faith related classes, groups and activities that she felt one more group would be too much. Her deci- sion was not only legitimate but very wise. She knew that forcing her children to attend another faith related group could actually become counterproductive and cause them to rebel. So in that instance, I fully supported her decision NOT to make her kids attend. Another parent told me that at first her child was resistant to attend- ing a youth group, but she felt it necessary because the child was not involved in any other such groups. Rather than “force” him to attend, she shrewdly bribed him with something he wanted, and it turned out that he enjoyed the group, and continued to attend by his own choice. The fact is, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Some teens really need to attend a youth group because the parents may not feel capable of teaching them the faith, or the child needs something to balance their exposure to secular influences. Other teens are so spiritually mature and grounded in their faith that, though the youth group would benefit greatly from their presence, the teen doesn’t really need the group. Ultimately, it is up to parents to discern whether or not they should “force,” “gently obligate,” “bribe” or allow their teenager to decide whether or not to go to youth group. To help you decide on the best approach for you, consider the following questions: What is your child’s level of knowledge and understanding about the Catholic Faith? Do you feel competent to answer all of their difficult questions? Do you find yourself having enough time to assess their spiritual life and address their needs? Is your teenager willing to discuss the faith with you? Are they already involved in other faith related groups? How involved in and connected to the Catholic community are they? How mature is their relationship with God? Do you feel your child is at risk of falling away from the faith once they leave home? Could you benefit from the help of experienced Catholic teachers? If you are unsure of what to do, I would be more than happy to meet with you and/or your son or daughter personally to talk about your/ their needs and concerns. The Jesus the Good Shepherd High School Youth Group will begin to meet this Wednesday, February 17 th from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at the home of Olga & Dan Trejo. Should You Make Your Teenagers Go To Youth Group? Whether or not to make a child go to youth group is a common dilemma among parents of high school age teen-agers. RCIA: EVERY TUESDAY 7:00PM PARISH HALL We will not have class this week in celebration of Mardi Gras and in preparation for the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday. We will be celebrating the Rite of Sending at the 8:30am Mass on Sunday, Feb. 14th then heading to the Cathedral in Shreve-port for the Rite of Election at 2:00pm. Also, please continue to pray for the candi-dates as they move through the learning process of joining the church.

VOCATIONS CHALICE Please pray for the following families as they pray for vocations each week. The tradition of the Vocations Chalice is widespread across the country. Each year at this time, JGS entrusts a special chalice to the care of a volunteer family during the weeks of Lent. Each week, a family will place the chal-ice in a place of honor in their home and will pray for vocations using the pray-er provided or one of their own choosing. The chalice is a visual reminder that the precious blood of Our Lord has saved and redeemed His people, and that He continues to call men and women to serve Him. While the individual families have the privilege of hosting the Vocations Chalice, the rest of us are called to pray for the family and for all of our young people to be alert to God’s voice in their hearts.

BISHOP’S APPEAL Next week JGS Church will be celebrating Appeal weekend as we take time this week to seek to educate ourselves about the programs and ministries our Annual Diocesan Stewardship Appeal provides. In this “Year of Mercy,” we are reminded that our Appeal has been offering programs like care for our retired priests, semi-narians, youth and Hispanic outreach, campus ministry and St. Vincent de Paul for many years. Please take time to review the material made available to you outlin-ing the programs and ministries listed above and more. In this way, we will be prepared next week to offer our pledge in support of the 2016 Annual Appeal. JGS FAMILY PROMISE WEEK FEBRUARY 21-27 ST. PASCHAL’S C.C. Being “Dynamic” this Lent

One of the four signs of a “Dynamic Catholic” is a commitment to regular prayer. The Voca-tions Awareness Committee is offering a way for you to become more prayerful this Lent. In-stead of (or in addition to) “giving up” something, why not make a resolution “to do” some-thing? Will you be “a Dynamic Catholic”?

Our seminarians, sisters in religious formation, and lay missionary appreciate receiving the cards that we sign for them at Christ-mas and at Easter. The Vocations Awareness Committee invites you to participate in a Parish-wide Dynamic Spiritual Bou-quet. A spiritual bouquet consists of any number of religious practices that are offered up for another person or other persons. On the other side of this page, you will find a list of possible pious practices. The due date for returning your spiritual bouquet tally sheet is Sunday, March 13, 2016. We will tally all of the spiritual works that you have performed (along with your name if you chose to sign your sheet) and include them in the Easter cards that we, as a parish, will send to the seminarians and others. We will provide a Spiritual Bouquet box in the gathering space in which you can deposit your tally sheets. Please prayerfully con-sider this ministry for your Lenten practices.

I offered up the following for the Easter Spiritual Bouquet:

______________________________ Acts of Charity ______________________________ Chaplets of Divine Mercy

______________________________ Days of Fasting ______________________________ Holy Communions

______________________________ Holy Masses attended

______________________________ Lit Votive Candles ______________________________ Novenas/Prayers

As a Church, we don’t sing or say the word “Alleluia” for the duration of Lent. Alleluia is an Easter word! We put it away, so to speak, and when we reclaim it on Easter Sunday, how

joyful it feels to let it roll off our tongues. After 40 days of quiet, we are practically bursting with Alleluia. :)

This is a tradition you may want to begin with your

family. Now that Lent has begun, consider rolling up this beautiful Alleluia like a scroll, tie it with a purple

ribbon, and tuck it away for the season.

Physically “burying” the word reminds us that joy always follows suffering. We must wait for it, but it will come.

Alleluia!
