Located on 5.8 acres of beachfront property in Gulfport, the Mississippi Aquarium will be a sprawling campus of indoor and outdoor exhibits. Roy Anderson Corp is contracted to construct multiple buildings measuring

approximately 80,000 sf, the preliminary build-out of interior and exterior exhibits and the installation of key structures including a 65-ft-tall fountain. There will be exhibits for marine mammals, otters, alligators, river animals and a shore bird aviary. Once complete, the aquarium will contain 1 million gallons of both salt and fresh water. The landscaping will be a natural food source for birds and butterflies. The first task for RAC was to install, or drive, 250 piles that will support the aquarium exhibits. Additionally, underground piping for storm water runoff, utilities, and a water treatment plant were installed. Concrete work is underway. While actual construction began in February 2018, an official kick off was held with a public ceremony and ground breaking on May 11. Attendees included Governor Phil Bryant, Mayor Billy Hewes and other local officials.

GROUND

On Aug. 15, 80 tons of acrylic panels for the Mississippi Aquarium arrived at the Port of Gulfport all the way from Italy. The panels, shipped from Rome, will be the windows to the aquarium’s habitat, providing visitors with a unique view of the marine life and their environments. The acrylic delivery included two tunnels – one guests can walk around and one guests can walk through, surrounding them with aquatic creatures. There is not another aquarium in the country where guests can walk through the middle of a tank with water on all sides of them. This tunnel is approximately 32 by 25 ft. and 16 inches thick. Some aquariums have tunnels on ground level, but none that are suspended where guests walk through the middle of the tank. The acrylic was manufactured by Clax Italia, a company that specializes in the manufacturing of acrylic panels for aquariums. These panels will be stored at the Port of Gulfport until ready for installation.

We understood early on that we needed a partner that had the experience, staffing, commitment to excellence and the understanding of the impact of this project for the community as a whole. Roy Anderson Corporation rose to the top in every aspect of what we outlined as our ‘must haves’ in a construction partner. From design phase through very difficult demolition and construction phases to punch list’s and close out, the Roy Anderson team managed the details that made this process move fluently and on schedule. Moving forward on any future design/build projects, I would without

hesitation recommend the team at Roy Anderson Corporation to partner with the Gulfport School District.

The Island View Casino Resort held a ribbon cutting for its new expansion of the beach casino on June 26. Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant, Mississippi Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves and City of Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes were among the dignitaries assigned to cut the ribbon. Other community leaders along with Roy Anderson Corp employees and a great turnout of the general public were also in attendance.

This new smoke-free Beach Casino is located on the beach side of Highway 90 in Gulfport, Miss. It is connected to the the resort’s Beach Tower Hotel. The floor-to-ceiling glass curtain wall system at the perimeter of the casino level allows natural light to flood in and offers unmatched views of the Mississippi Sound, very unique for a casino. The expansion includes 43,000 sf of smoke-free gaming space, the Prime Cut Restaurant, the Beach Coffee Shop, Gulf Breeze Daiquiris and the Dockside Deli which includes a 236-seat dining balcony overlooking the beach. Other amenities include entertainment on the a stage built in the center of the casino and a sports bar where Island View now offers sport betting. LED lights placed throughout the casino change color and the mood. When a winner hits a jackpot, there is a light show. A new hotel lobby and ground level parking complete this project.

With this expansion, Island View boasts the largest casino floor in the State of Mississippi, totaling 126,000 sf of gaming space. This is the fourth project Roy Anderson Corp has completed for Island View Casino Resort.

TOPPING OUT HISTORY

Putting the last structural steel beam or final roofing piece in place on a building is a project milestone. To celebrate, many contractors place an evergreen on top of the building and hold a celebration. The evergreen symbolizes positive things, good luck for future occupants, continued growth, a safe job and celebrates an important achievement to-date in a building’s construction.

It turns out that this construction celebration has ancient roots. The practice of “topping out” a new building can be traced to the ancient Scandinavian religious rite of placing a tree atop a new building to appease the tree-dwelling spir-its displaced in its construction (i.e. cutting down trees). It migrated initially to England and Northern Europe, thence to the Americas. The practice remains common today.

AWARD-WINNING SAFETY

NATIONAL SAFETY COUNCIL’S 5 YEAR SAFETY LEADERSHIP AWARD

RAC has achieved another significant safety milestone – FIVE YEARS with no recordable incidents. A recordable incident is an injury that results in any of the following: death, days away from work, restricted work or transferred to another job, medical treatment beyond first aid or a loss of consciousness. This achievement confirms our standards, priorities and corporate safety culture at RAC to have every employee to home each day to their families with no injuries.

ABC NATIONAL SAFETY MERIT AWARD

Associated Builders and Contractors announced the winners of the 2017 National Safety Awards at ABC Convention 2018 in Long

Beach, Calif. Roy Anderson Corp was recognized for their safety performance on March 21 during the 28th annual Excel-lence in Construction® Awards. “Associ-ated Builders and Contractors is proud to honor members who have created world-class safety processes and a safety culture where every employee understands that the wellbeing of those around them is everyone’s responsibility,” said 2018 ABC National Chair George R. Nash Jr. “These leading merit shop contractors have shown a top-down, uncompromising commitment

to safety and share ABC’s goal of achieving zero-incident construc-tion jobsites.”

The 2017 National Safety Awards were selected from ABC member firms that achieved Diamond, Platinum and Gold status in ABC’s Safety Training Evaluation Process in 2017. During the selection process, they were judged on self-evaluation scores, lost workday case rates, total recordable incident rates, leading indicator use, process and program innovations and video interviews conducted by members of ABC’s National Environment, Health and Safety Committee. STEP is the standard for developing world-class safety programs in construction and is designed to help both large and small contractors evaluate every aspect of their corporate safety and health program and identify opportunities for improvement.
