TODAY’S WEATHER HIGH: 86 LOW: 63 Governor Mike Pence today joined Senator Jim Merritt and local leaders from Fishers, Noblesville and Pendleton to officially kick off construction on a $92 million project to modernize Interstate 69 in Hamilton and Madison counties. “Here in the Crossroads of America, we know that roads mean jobs,” said Governor Pence. “Along this section of I-69, we’ve seen tremendous economic development and it is vital that we modernize this portion of the highway to ensure continued economic growth. My administration has invested nearly $3 billion in roads and bridges across Indiana since I became governor, and I firmly believe that by continuing to invest in infrastructure, we can make Indiana the best place in America to start a business, grow a business and create jobs.” The project, as part of the Governor’s Major Moves 2020 program, will widen 15 miles of Interstate 69 from State Road 37 in Fishers to State Road 38 in Pendleton. Also, the project will reconfigure I-69 Exit 210 at Campus/Southeastern Parkway into a double-crossover diamond. Most highway maintenance activities and construction projects will halt work and pull back barriers and barricades to the safest extent possible for holiday weekend travel. Following Independence Day, Milestone Contractors will shift traffic to begin widening I-69 and build new ramps at Exit 210. Governor’s Pence’s Major Moves 2020 program is widening and rehabilitating more than 40 miles of I-65 and I-69 in Indiana. This includes: I-65 between from State Road 44 near Franklin to the Johnson/Marion county line, I-65 from State Road 38 to State Road 26 near Lafayette in Tippecanoe County, and I-65 between Sellersburg and Memphis in Clark County. In December, I-65 south of U.S. 30 in Merrillville was added to the Major Moves 2020 program. Four design-build teams are currently developing proposals to widen and modernize as much of I-65 as the $70 million project budget allows. The Council approved an agree- ment with consult- ing engineer and architect firm RQAW Corp. for a three- story office building. Also approved was a four-story mixed use building at the corner of Lan- tern Road and North Street, along with a 500 spots parking garage. The mixed use building will include 240 residential spaces. Attendees at this year’s Westfield Rocks the 4 th event will be able to participate in an archery area featuring foam-tipped arrows. “We’re expanding our menu of activities for this year’s cele- bration,” Parks Director Melody Jones said. “These exciting archery activities are geared for older kids ages 10+, teens and adults. It will be a lot of fun.” Two archery activities will be available for participants. For attendees looking to hone their target skills, an archery range will be provided by S.A.F.E. Archery (Students and Families Experiencing Archery). Using soft, foam-tip arrows, participants will be able to work on their aim as they shoot floating objects. A second option for participants will be Archery Tag – an action-packed game similar to paintball that also utilizes foam- tipped arrows. The game will consist of two sets of four-on-four, and all participants must be 10+ and will be prompted to sign a waiver onsite prior to participating. If under 18, a parent or guard- ian will need to sign. Both archery activities are offered at no cost to participants. and must have 100 full-time employees bythe end of 2021 The average salary forthose positions can be no less than $80000according to the agreement

What is happening in Fishers continuesthe long and sometimes hotly debated (as itwas in Carmel) that ldquoenough is enoughrdquoSome folks in Fishers are moaning that thedevelopment will bring more and moretraffic to what was a peaceful area whichfor years and years was nothing more thanthree or four downtown businesses withzero downtown housing

Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness in a pressrelease addressed the subject by writingldquoThis redevelopment project really raisesthe bar for our entrepreneurial city A cre-ative development like this one that meetsthe needs of small business owners andestablishes much needed office space in theNickel Plate District brings significant val-ue to our downtown and furthers the eco-system in which entrepreneurs can thriverdquo

The parking garage and mixed usebuilding will be owned developed andoperated by an Indianapolis based manage-ment and investment firm

The parking garage is expected to beused by RQAW employees and residents inthe apartment complex Meyer Najemwhich in 2014 built its $55 million head-quarters just north of the proposed devel-opment also would use the garage for itsemployees The garage likely will be opento the public on evenings and weekends

If you havenrsquot driven through Fisherslately do so Itrsquos exciting what is going onto the little area we once called ldquoMudsockrdquo

By JOSIE GRIFFIN and ALEXA AKERSJosie Day two in Saint Petersburg has

passed It was our first full day so everyoneon the team was excited and ready to workhard And that was a good thing becausewe needed that motivation to get though theday

Alexa When Rich our coach toldeveryone our practice schedule (9-11am) we were all excited I meanwersquore swimmers We usually get up at 440am so this was something to celebrate

Of course we werenrsquot allowed to sleepin We had a wakeup call at 7 am for break-fast and free time after that Our hotel wasserving us a giant breakfast buffet filledwith all the go-to breakfast foods eggscereal with milk bacon and pancakes Allof our teammates headed to practice withfull stomachs

After the 45 minute drive to the NorthShore Aquatic Center we were ready tojump in to some ice cold water and startpracticing I was one of the only peoplewho had seen the pool before and even soitrsquos been over three years The pool islocated in the bay with the ocean beingonly a glimpse away however that meantall the salt from the sea got into the waterwe swim in Everyone in the pool tastedfrench fries throughout the entire prac-tice

Rich took it easy on us during our firstpractice of the week giving us time to getused to the new pool and see how it felt toswim on a full stomach We practiced from9-11am and then headed back to the hotelfor lunch The hotel served us chickengreen beans and potatoes which was infi-nitely better than the pig they had served thenight before Since we had just come back

from practice our appetites were allworked up and everyone cleaned theirplates Some swimmers had seconds and afew even had thirds You know how ath-letes can be

After lunch we had free time for abouttwo and a half hours and then went to oursecond team meeting This meeting fo-cused on the word ldquoprocessrdquo We listenedto our coach and our chaperones talkabout the processes that they endured toget to where they are today in swimmingand in other parts of our life During themeeting there was an extra emphasis onthe act of goal setting That was somethingreally important for our team to remem-ber because it will help us get to champi-onship meets like state and beyond

Our team leaders had a secret beachactivity planned for us after the meetingWe were all sorted into teams and instruct-ed build the best sea creature out of thesand The groups were given thirty minutesto construct their animals while the chaper-ones judged them Each sand sculpture wasjudged based off of its aesthetics the use ofour ldquonatural resourcesrdquo and the use ofteamwork The best team my team wasdeclared the winner There was fightingover the end result of course But I feel asif the chaperones made the best decision

We then migrated from the beach tothe pool First step dryland For thosewho donrsquot know swimmers refer to theirout of the water conditioning asldquodrylandrdquo We were expecting somethingchallenging but by the time practice wasover half of the team was contemplatingtheir decision to join the swim team allthose years ago

We started off with a longrun in the Florida heat Beingfrom Indiana we still werenrsquotused to weather over 60 de-grees But we pantedhuffed and powered our wayto the finish point We thenmoved on to abs Itrsquos a tradi-tion to do a five minute leglift on the trip but our teamdefinitely wasnrsquot expectingto do two in a row In all tenswimmers made the two longleg lifts We followed thisfeat with sprints drills and awhole lot of water

Most athletes would havecalled it a day after the dry-land portion of practice Butwe arenrsquot most athletes Weheaded immediately to thepool where we completed acountless number of sprintson a timed interval Needless to say weslept easily that night

I and the rest of my team was starvingafter a long and hard practice In years pastdinner had always been a buffet This yearwe were all excited to be served our pre-ordered meals It was a good idea in theorybut didnrsquot work out so well when 55 peoplesat down at once and demanded their foodvery very quickly I waited an hour for mypulled pork mac and cheese It was thelongest hour of my life

By the time we finished eating it was930 Curfew was 1000 so we didnrsquot have

much free time Some took the opportunityto get more sleep Others chose to havesome bonding experiences with theirteammates Regardless it was a construc-tive use of time for all

Irsquom more excited than anything to seewhat tomorrow brings This trip providesmemories we remember forever andworkouts that are hard to forget I justhave to say so far itrsquos been great

Day two is in the books We have onlypassed one day in the hardest but mostrewarding weeks of training that Irsquove everhad

Irsquom more excited than anything to seewhat tomorrow brings This trip providesmemories we remember forever andworkouts that are hard to forget I justhave to say so far itrsquos been great
