From the OfficeEvents & excursions are an important part of a student’s time at school and assists with their classroom learning. In the past, permission for excursions has always been given by signing a paper consent form and returning this form to the Front Office.

We would like to advise all families that beginning Term 1 2020, paper consent forms will no longer be generated. All consent and payments for events will be processed through Compass. In addition to event permission, the following benefits are available:

• School fees can be viewed & securely paid, including setting up payment plans• Eliminate the need for students to bring cash to school• Student timetables can be viewed• Reports can be instantly downloaded and printed if required• Communicate with your child’s teachers• View important news events• View and download College Newsletters• Add attendance notifications• Book Parent/Teacher interviews• View homework tasks

Compass can be accessed either via the website or the IOS and Android app. To assist families who do not have access to the internet or a mobile device, we have 2 dedicated computers available for parents’ use set up near the Front Office.

Staff are available upon request to assist parents with the log on and use of Compass. To make a booking for a training session, please contact the front office on 9546 9066. Please advise if an interpreter is required.

You are able to log on to Compass immediately with your current login details. If you do not know or have forgotten your login information, please contact the front office where we can give you this information.

We believe this is a positive change and will help to ensure that your child does not miss out on future events.

Year 10 Tasmania TourOur year 10s are excited to be heading down to the Apple Isle for a one week tour to round off their year.

17 students boarded the Spirit of Tasmania for the overnight journey to Devonport. Whilst in Tasmania they have a jampacked itinerary, with the highlights being visits to both Cradle Mountain and Freycinet National Parks, a chance to explore the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Hobart, walking amongst the treetops of the Huon Valley on the Tahune Airwalk, and or course an obligatory visit to Australia’s most notorious convict settlement, Port Arthur – complete with a ghost tour! The students have finished their classes for the year, and their induction to year 11, and are excited to kick off their summer holidays with this fantastic adventure!

Our school chess team qualified for and competed in the Interschool Chess National Finals tournament held at the University of Melbourne over two days in early December. This is the first time that Noble Park Secondary College has participated in such a prestigious event. The event attracted approximately 340 primary and secondary school students, some from as far away as Perth (Western Australia) and Auckland (New Zealand).

Our team performed incredibly well in their first major tournament, considering that they

were facing some of the best junior chess players in the country. After 7 tough games, Hayriya Abudureheman (Year 10) scored 3 points (in chess, 1 point is awarded for a win, 0.5 point for a draw and zero point for a loss), followed by Martina Chilcumpa Diaz (Year 8, 2.5 points) and Duhita Dia (Year 9, 2 points). We hope to send a bigger team next year to this annual tournament. Interested players should meet in the school chess club located next to the library.

Year 8 Career Workshop

Our Year 8 students participated in a workshop directed by the team from Federation University. It helped them to discover a little more about themselves and begin a career conversation with their parents. Parent support is very important to have early, as student career aspirations change it is great to know parents are there taking interest in their lives.

It was fun, helpful and I thought it was a good way to know what I might want to do in the future. The game we played was fun too.

NOBLE PARK SECONDARY COLLEGE

Student Mobile Phone Policy 2020

The Victorian Government takes the safe and responsible use of digital technologies, student safety and wellbeing, and the development of social skills and positive behaviour, very seriously. On this basis, the Hon. James Merlino MP, Minister for Education, announced that a new mobile phone policy would take effect from Term 1 2020. Personal mobile phone use In accordance with the Education Department’s Mobile Phone’s Policy issued by the Minister for Education, personal mobile phones and electronic devices must not be used at Noble Park Secondary College during school hours, including:

On entry to the school property During any class/lesson At lunchtime and recess Between the last class (or Detention) and returning to their locker

DEFINITIONS A mobile phone is a telephone with access to a cellular (telecommunication) system, with or without a physical connection to a network. A personal electronic device is any other personal device with access to a cellular (telecommunication) system, (including Smart watches/headsets/pods) with or without a physical connection to a network OR to store or access to digital photos/music/video content OTHER than a school authorised Laptop Device. MOBILE PHONE POLICY Noble Park Secondary College understands that some students may bring a personal mobile phone to school, particularly if they are travelling independently to and from school. At Noble Park Secondary College:

• Students who choose to bring mobile phones to school must have them switched off and securely stored during school hours in their locked locker.

• Exceptions to this policy may be applied if certain conditions are met (see below for further information) • When emergencies occur, parents or carers should reach their child by calling the school’s office.

Where a student has been granted an exception, the student must use their mobile phone for the purpose for which the exception was granted, and in a safe, ethical and responsible manner. Secure storage Mobile phones and personal electronic devices owned by students at Noble Park Secondary College are considered valuable items and are brought to school at the owner’s (student or parent/carer’s) risk. Students are encouraged not to bring a mobile phone/electronic device/s to school unless there is a compelling reason to do so. Please note that the school does not have accident insurance for accidental property damage or theft. Students and their parents/carers are encouraged to obtain appropriate insurance for valuable items.

At Noble Park Secondary College, students are required to store their phones and personal electronic devices in their locker which must be locked with a school provided lock.

If in extenuating circumstances a locker is not available or not secured – then the student should leave the phone or personal electronic device at the front office – and it will be labelled, stored securely in the safe by front office staff until it is signed out and collected by the student.

Page 14: CONTACT - nobleparksc.vic.edu.au · 19 December Clean up Day 20 December Last Day term 4 28 January Staff return 29 January Year 7 & 12 ONLY return 30 January ALL YEAR Levels (7-12)

Enforcement Students who use their personal mobile phones or personal electronic devices inappropriately:

• Will be asked to hand the phone to the staff member • The phone will be placed in a bag labelled with the students name and year level • The staff member will hand the bag and phone to the front office immediately • The front office staff will securely store the phone in the strongroom • The front office staff will – log the event on Compass which will automatically alert parents via

SMS and Email. (Parents without an email or mobile number will be contacted via phone.) • Front office staff will make the phone available for the parent or guardian (or listed emergency

contact person) to collect at their earliest opportunity. Refusal to hand over a phone or personal electronic device, and consistent refusal to follow the policy will require further follow up according to school’s existing student engagement policies and code of conduct, which would include afterschool detentions, withdrawal from classes, parent meetings and if needed internal or external suspensions. At Noble Park Secondary College, inappropriate use of mobile phones or personal electronic devices is any use during school hours on the school site, unless the principal has granted an exception. It is not appropriate to use a mobile phone at any time:

• can be granted by the Principal, in accordance with the Department’s Mobile Phones Policy.

Where an onsite-exception is granted, the student can only use the mobile phone or personal electronic device for the purpose for which it was granted. A pass will be provided by the Principal to the students granted an exception. The student will present the pass to any staff upon request.
