Oberon U3A’s term 2 wrapped up just recently and planning is well under way for our term 3 activities. Some of the highlights from last term were Lexi Kellam’s Felt making workshops, which will continue monthly due to popular demand; our Armchair Travel sessions where we visited Slovenia and then toured Madagascar: the cooking classes where we learned how to make sweet pizzas, bread and cheese, and sponge cakes; and technology classes where we learned how to better organise our photos, discovered what’s available in the way of online courses, and became more skilled in using Facebook. Some of our members also spent a sunny Saturday afternoon at Vale Creek Winery – taking a tour of the winery and then partaking in a lovely lunch accompanied by wine tasting with expert commentary by Liz McFarland. Term 3 classes begin on Monday, October 17th. First up will be a presentation, on this date, on Safety and Security for Seniors by Senior Constable Sue Rose, from the Chifley Command Crime Management Unit. This talk will be open to anyone in the Oberon Community and will start at 10.00am at the Robert Hopper Community Centre. Sue will talk about safety and security issues
around the home, vehicles, shopping and banking, and she will deal with some of the scams that are currently operating. Interested people need to book into this talk by ringing 6336 0439, as there is a maximum number of 25 participants. Other U3A activities coming up in third term, apart from our usual weekly and fortnightly classes, will be a wine appreciation course run by Mark Renzaglia (Owner / Vigneron Renzaglia Wines), a tour of the Oberon Railway heritage site (railway station and workshop), some new cooking classes, another session on Electronic Banking, some technology classes on downloading music, publishing a Christmas newsletter, and photobooks, and aqua aerobics just to mention a few. If you would like to find out more about Oberon U3A visit our website http://oberon.u3anet.org.au or ring the Secretary, Jenn Capel, on 6335 8226.

6329 8100. Waste must be placed on the kerbside by Sunday 16 October 2016 and it will be collected during the week of the 17
th October.
Any items not accepted as part of this collection will need to be taken to the Oberon Waste Depot, Lowes Mount Road, Oberon. Volumes accepted should not exceed the equivalent to one box trailer load. Remember, FREE tip vouchers are also welcome. For further information on any of these collections please contact Councils Planning and Development Department on 6329 8100.
RECYCLING AND OBERON WASTE DEPOT UPDATE The Oberon community is congratulated on its continued use of the Recycling Centre on North Street, Oberon. As a result of this ongoing trial, Council have now placed two additional bins for recycling materials only at the centre. Please be advised that the recycling bins are NOT for domestic rubbish. Please ensure that you put your recycling into the bins provided and if they are in bags or boxes please empty out and place those items in the correct bins. Please don’t sit your recycling on the ground as this causes items to be blown away. If the bins are full you can still recycle at the Oberon tip free of charge between the hours of 8am - 10am and 3pm - 5pm weekdays and 1pm - 5pm on weekends. We have had a number of enquiries regarding the use of tip vouchers for the disposal of tyres. Please note the Oberon Tip can only accept tyres which have been shredded or cut into 30cm pieces. If the tyres have not been shredded or cut up as required they cannot be accepted at the tip either in general waste or through the use of tip vouchers.
The following waste will be accepted for collection:

Items not accepted for collection include: Glass Hazardous waste such as paints,

New Deputy Principal at Oberon High
On 12th September, 2016 Mr Steve Harper was welcomed to Oberon High School as the new Deputy Principal. Most recently Mr Harper
was relieving principal at Collarenebri High School, and he has spent most of his teaching career in country and regional schools in the north west of the state. His training and experience is in primary and high school mathematics teaching. Mr Harper said that one of the things that attracted him to Oberon High was the reputation the school has for innovative practice for student education. “I’m a results driven person and am really impressed with the way the school has been steadily improving over recent years. I want to help that improvement continue”, said Mr Harper. Mr Harper is impressed by the natural beauty of the Oberon area and he is looking forward to exploring more in his 4WD.
Painting the town with daffodils
Students became honorary Daffodil Fairies in September when they
helped to welcome Spring to Oberon by painting colourful daffodils on shop windows in the main street. This was part of the preparation for World Peace Day celebrations held later in the month.
Major works completed External HSC markers took 8 hours to assess the 13 projects that were completed as part of the school’s Industrial Technology subjects. For each of the students many hours have gone into the completion of this element which comprises 60% of their HSC mark. For most students this was the biggest structured task of their lives. The learning is not always in the completion of the task but often in the journey the students have taken. Head teacher, Mr Dave Boyd thanked the parents and teachers who supported the students through what was, at times, a difficult journey. Angus understands the Long
Tan sacrifice In late August school captain, Angus Fittler addressed a very large crowd at the Vietnam Veterans Park in Bathurst at the annual Vietnam Veterans Day Service. Federal Member for Calare Andrew Gee and State Member for Bathurst Paul Toole also spoke at the commemorative service. This year was especially significant being the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. Angus referred to a letter written by one of the Australian soldiers and spoke of the courage and bravery that the Australians from D Company 6RAR demonstrated when they resisted an attack of 1500-2500 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops.
“I feel privileged to have been able to speak on this occasion on behalf of my school and other young Australians. I’m 18 – I could have been in the same position as those soldiers. Their sacrifice was amazing,” said Angus after the service.
Largest island - Australia or Greenland?
This was the hotly contested question that came out of the school’s trivia night held in August and the discussion continued in the staff room on Monday morning. However it was all in good humour and the night was full of lots of laughs and good fun. Age, gender and even level of formal education were irrelevant as team members got to demonstrate their “knowledge” in a variety of subject areas. The school’s SRC organised the evening to raise funds for the students. Generous support from the local community who donated the prizes, and strong participation from current and past students, teachers, parents and friends, resulted in smiles all round. Thanks to Miss Shannon Marshall who organised most of the event.
