LIVE THE LITURGY Have you ever experienced a time in your life when everything came together and became abundantly clear? You may have been confused about something, in the dark, at a point of doubt, or unclear as to how to act. You may have questioned someone’s motivation and found yourself coming to the wrong conclusion. Then out of nowhere, the insight came and reality dawned. You experienced an epiphany of sorts! Today, we celebrate Christ’s

manifestation to all of the nations of the world. Has it dawned on you yet that Jesus Christ is the answer humanity has been seeking? Jesus is truly the beginning and end of all things and the key to understanding God’s presence in every human heart. Once this real Epiphany dawns on us, we can never see God, ourselves, or one another in any other way. The Divine Light illumines everything and connects the dots.

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE

A Blessed and Holy Christmas Season to you! Fact: Although the radio stations have turned off the Christmas music, and many others have “put Christmas

away.” The Catholic Church celebrates the Christmas season until the Baptism of the Lord on Jan 12.

Gift Giving

A few days before Christmas I wandered through a store looking for a small, simple gift for my family celebration. For the past few years we have played the “stealing” game or dice game, making the gift exchange less complicated. Walking down the aisles, I encountered gifts that smell—candles, spices and treats. In other aisles I found breakable gifts—mugs, picture frames, and wine glasses. Should I purchase something consumable or something that will take up space on a shelf?

At the beginning of Advent, my siblings and I used to draw names for a “Secret Santa.” Throughout the season we were supposed to practice acts of kindness towards that person and purchase a gift for them. As gift-opening came, we

attempted to guess our Secret Santa. If the task was done well, we should have noticed which sibling had been unusually nice to us.

St. Paul tells us that the body of Christ, the Church, is blessed with many members and many unique gifts. He also encourages us with the words, “Having gifts that differ according to the graces given to us, let us use them…” (Rom 12:6). In his letter to the Corinthians he also speaks about gifts, “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit” (1Cor 12:4).

I found my way to the check-out counter and put together a gift that was both funny and practical (at least for the coffee lover). It wasn’t a life-changing gift by any means. That gift is found in the smelly stable, the broken and humble manger crib.
