artists had new things to say with

Decal Glazed Cups NSaturday, November 1412—5 pmH visiting artist: Ehren Toollevel: allDo you or someone you know serve in the Armed Forces? Join visiting artist Ehren Tool in an intimate exploration of war, peace, memory, and clay. Workshop participants are invited to e-mail us a personal image of war, propaganda, or something meaningful from your service. During the workshop, Ehren will discuss his artistic process while applying your image to a uniquely crafted cup for you to keep. A former U.S. Marine, Ehren is currently producing work related to war and PTSD. This workshop is presented in conjunction with Mindful: Exploring Mental Health Through Art.

Beer SteinsSaturday, November 2110 am—5 pminstructor: Yoko Sekino-Bovelevel: allUsing low-fire white clay and soft-slab construction techniques, students will create a one-of-a-kind ceramic beer stein. The steins can be personalized with stamps, underglaze painting, and other texturing techniques.

Introduction to Paper MakingWednesday, September 96—9 pminstructors: Katy Dement & Albert Pantonelevel: allLearn the basics of paper making by sheet forming with recycled cotton and wood pulp fibers. An introduction to surface design with inclusions of wet embossed textures will be included.

Meditative Paper Cutting NSaturday, September 1910 am—12:30 pminstructor: Gianna Paniaqualevel: allFind healing and learn meditative techniques through the art of paper cutting. Be transported to a peaceful state that allows for reflection and relaxation, while mastering paper cutting basics and creating artwork that incorporates repetitive imagery. Each student will create a paper milagro, or a physical representation of an intention they have for themselves or a loved one. This workshop is presented in conjunction with Mindful: Exploring Mental Health Through Art.

Participants will be immersed in the serendipitous and scientific process of making paper by hand and forming paper from plants. The workshop will focus on invasive species including Japanese knot weed.


Paper LanternsSaturday & SundayOctober 24 & 2510 am—2 pminstructor: Katy Dementlevel: allCreate a paper lantern to embellish, mount, light, and display! Lanterns will be constructed from a variety of plants, pulps, fibers, and recycled papers. The finished paper sculptures will be easy to hang using cane, wire, and twine.


2D Relief Paper ClayWednesday, November 116—9 pminstructors: Katy Dement & Albert Pantonelevel: allForm textured slab constructions from a fibrous blend of clay and paper. The mixed media works will be embellished with relief printing blocks and natural additions.

Chasing, stamping, scribing, hammer engraving, and solder inlay will be covered. Students will have time to make several samples, in addition to learning how to use some of the specialty tools featured in the workshop. Gabriel and Amy are joining us from Smith Shop, a Detroit metalworking studio described by Dwell magazine as being on the forefront of the craft renaissance. Don't miss this unique opportunity to work with the artists behind this exciting movement!


Volumetric Jewelry Saturday & SundaySeptember 12 & 1310 am—5 pminstructor: Katie Rearicklevel: allLearn to make hollow, volumetric forms in metal using the hydraulic press. Students will use the die-forming process to produce a pendant or small wearable vessel. Learn the basics of sawing, filing, annealing, soldering, and forming. Surface design and finishing techniques will also be covered.


Pushing Past The Limits with Cold ConnectionsSaturday & SundayOctober 3 & 410 am—5 pmH visiting artist: Casey Sheppardlevel: allPlay with metal and design in this cold connections workshop. Students will create a hinged bracelet out of sheet metal, all without picking up a torch. Other techniques, such as tube rivets, metal/wire forming, and finishing details with oxidization, will be covered. This workshop is part of Casey's "Case of the Nomads" project, a year-long journey across the U.S. connecting communities through craft.

Jewelry Edition: Professional PracticesSaturday, December 510 am—5 pmH visiting artists: Kat Cole & Laura Woodlevel: allJewelry Edition is a web based exhibition and pop-up experience showcasing the work of emerging and early career jewelry artists. The diversity of the jewelry field grows larger and more exciting by the day! Join us in the SCC Studio to learn more about this new platform, including information about the contemporary jewelry field and professional practices. Topics include social media presence, pricing, retail shows, gallery relationships, branding, and networking. Students are encouraged to bring in their own work for portfolio reviews.

Intro to EnamelingSaturday, November 710 am—5 pminstructor: Jenny Soraccolevel: allAdd color and pattern to metal jewelry with enameling! Students will learn to fuse glass enamels to metal and experiment with a variety of surface effects and layering techniques. Each student will produce an enameled box, earrings, or necklace.

Hula-Hoop Rag Rug TimeSaturday & SundaySeptember 12 & 1310 am—5 pminstructor: Amy Masterslevel: allLearn a fun and easy way to repurpose old fabrics during this two-day hula-hoop rag rug workshop. Students will learn to weave in the round while exploring pattern making through various color combinations. The instructor, Amy Masters, uses fiber-based sculpture and installation to examine play. She recently created the world’s largest (maybe) rag rug at Arrowmont!


Bojagi & Body Ornament Saturday & SundayOctober 3 & 410 am—3 pm H visiting artist: Chunghie Leelevel: all Discover the Bojagi, a traditional Korean wrapping cloth, as you become acquainted with its history and usage in Korean society. Working side-by-side with Chunghie Lee, an internationally renowned fiber artist, students will learn the basic techniques in Bojagi making and create a one-of-a-kind body ornament as their final project. Co-sponsored by the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh.

Introduction to Tapestry WeavingSaturday, October 1710 am—5 pminstructor: Leigh Koeglerlevel: allGet started on your weaving journey by learning basic tapestry techniques on a wooden frame loom. In this workshop, you will create a custom tapestry piece using hand dyed, vintage, and reclaimed yarns. Students will receive a complete weaving kit, which will include their own frame loom to take home with them to continue their tapestry creations.

Using pre-stretched canvases, master image transfer on fabric with gel medium and experiment with acrylic paint to create designs and dyes on fabric. The semitransparent quality of this material can be utilized to add depth to your work, or be finished to a glass-like surface. Take advantage of these properties during the workshop to create translucent-based canes and assemble them into jewelry.

Art journaling is about exploring emotions and thoughts, both written and visual. Your altered book is a place for feelings that may not otherwise have a home. Utilize color, texture, and pattern in both inventive and traditional quilt designs. The results are free flowing, vibrant paper tapestries.


Advanced Improv QuiltingSaturday, November 1410 am—5 pminstructor: Lauren Jonkmanlevel: allLearn and practice several improvisational techniques to make modern quilts. Experiment with making improvised "slabs" and work with curved pieces to modernize traditional quilt blocks. You will take home a completed set of placemats, a table runner, or a wall hanging.

ONE-ON-ONE & STUDIO RENTALSPrivate lessons in many media can be arranged upon request for students of all ages and skill levels. Private lessons are $50 per hour, with a two-hour minimum. In addition, independent studio use is available during open studio hours and by special arrangement.
