Standard running shoes should be adequate for this event. Before reaching the starting line, runners should make certain their shoes are securely tied. Loose laces can cause one to trip and fall while ascending the building. It is good practice for runners to double knot shoelaces for safety. It is also recommended that runners avoid participating with any accessories or loose fitting jewelry (necklaces, bracelets, large earrings, etc.) that might fall off during the climb.
The bag deposit at the race venue opens at 9:15 AM on the morning of the race. It will be located at The Arena @ Kerry Sports Manila on the 6/F. Please show your race bib to the staff at the bag deposit to leave and collect your bag. We advise that participants do not leave any valuable items in their bags. • You may experience ‘dry throat’ during this event. The stairwell is well ventilated for air passage. Even so, indoor air is significantly drier than outdoor air. Consult your physician if you have any breathing disorders, which may be triggered by dry air such as emphysema or asthma.
• Do not keep anything in your mouth such as food, lozenge, or otherwise when climbing. You will risk choking on that object. When drinking at the water stations, it is recommended that you stop and finish drinking before resuming your climb.
• Do not throw cups on the floor of the stairwell or spill drinking water. If you see a water spill, please notify a volunteer.

Warming up and cooling down are essential parts of every run and should not be skipped. By properly warming up and cooling down, you can prevent injuries and get the most out of your workout or race. During a warm up, you will gradually prepare your heart, lungs, muscles and tendons for the exertion of each training run or race. It can last anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes, and should include:
• Gentle loosening exercises• Light jogging• Static stretching• Event specific exercise, such as sprinting or jumping or
running strides
WARM UP TIPSBY MICHAEL MONTES - DIRECTOR OF KERRY SPORTS MANILA
TIPS ON EATING BEFORE THE RUN
Try not to have any big meals before the race. A light snack that can be easily digested would be the best option. You should not experiment with any new foods or venture too far from your normal diet. It’s easy to get nervous in the last few days and be persuaded by a new product a friend recommends.
Hydration-wise, you’ll want to drink mostly water, with some electrolyte fluid. Drink small, regular sized amounts. Room temperature water is absorbed quicker than warm or cold water. It can get pretty dry in the stairwell, but there are water stations going up!
16CITI VERTICAL RUN AT KERRY SPORTS MANILA 2019
• Please be mindful of other climbers.
• Please move to the outside to let others pass.
• Do not climb side-by-side. This makes it difficult for other climbers to pass.
• If you wish to allow faster climbers to pass you on the inside, please move outside before they reach you. Otherwise you may step into their path and slow them down. As an alternative, step into a landing corner to let them pass.
• It is recommended that athletes keep only one earbud in to be able to hear directions from race officials.
• Selfie sticks are prohibited in any runner and spectator areas.
STAIR CLIMBING ETIQUETTE
• Try climbing two stairs at a time, this will be faster than one stair at a time, it does however require a reasonable amount of leg strength. If two stairs becomes difficult practice alternating every three floors from one stair to two stairs.
• Use the handrails where possible as this adds momentum and stops the legs from getting too tired early on.
• Lean slightly forward into the stairs.
• Remember to be in control of your breathing, breathe in deeply from the stomach to allow maximum oxygen into the lungs.
• Wear weight training or cycling gloves for better grip on the handrail and to avoid blisters.
