IRONMAN is a triathlon comprising a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride and then a full 26.2 mile marathon all to be completed consecutively within 17 hours.

IRONMAN was founded in 1978 when some athletes in Hawaii were discussing who the fittest athlete was; the swimmer, the cyclist or the runner. One of the group, naval officer John Collins, suggested they settle the debate

by combining the three existing long-distance competitions already on the island: the Waikiki Rough Water Swim (2.4mi), the Around-Oahu Bike Race (112mi), and the Honolulu Marathon (26.2mi) into a single event.

13 athletes completed that first race and since then the sport has grown into a global series with over 70,000 athletes competing each year.

Hawaii remains the spiritual home of IRONMAN, with the World Championships held every year in October in Kailua-Kona on Hawaii’s Big Island. Each IRONMAN race is a qualifying event for Kona, not only for the Pro athletes, but age group athletes can earn a slot in Hawaii and represent their country at the IRONMAN World Championship.

Athletes range in age from 18 to 80+ and come from a wide variety of sporting backgrounds.

At IRONMAN Weymouth, there are 40 slots available to The IRONMAN World Championship in Kona.

IRONMAN Wales attracts many professional athletes all trying to secure enough points to qualify for the IRONMAN World Championship. Female pro’s will be in pink BIB numbers and males will be in blue. There is pro prize money of $25,000.

WHO TO LOOK OUT FOR:1 Kristin Moeller, DEU. Kristin is no stranger to IRONMAN podiums,

having seen 8 throughout her IRONMAN 70.3 and IRONMAN career. This includes wins in 2011 at IRONMAN UK and Wales. She will be after that top spot once again.

4 Diana Riesler, DEU. With two top spots within a year at IRONMAN Malaysia and most recently IRONMAN 70.3 Gydnia in August Diana will be chasing that top spot to add to her recent achievements.

6 Lucy Charles, GBR. This is Lucy’s first year as a professional athlete after winning her age groups in IRONMAN 70.3 and IRONMAN World Championship in 2015. Her first season as a pro has seen her achieve 3rd place at IRONMAN Lanzarote (her first race as a pro) and 4th at IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire. As an ex-national swimmer she is regularly first out of the water.

20 Romain Guillaume, FRA. Romain began triathlon at 8 years old and is now a two times IRONMAN Champion. He also achieved a top 10 finish at the IRONMAN World Championship in 2014 and top 20 last year. He will be chasing a top spot in order to secure enough points to qualify for the IRONMAN World Championship yet again.

26 Ritchie Nicholls, GBR. This Scotsman has shown his capabilities on the IRONMAN 70.3 stage with wins at IRONMAN 70.3 UK, Norway and the European Championship. With a half marathon time of 1hour 9 minutes he is one to watch on the run!

30 Oliver Simon, GBR. This will be Oliver’s 5th time competing in IRONMAN Wales. As a Welshman, living in Pembrokeshire, it is an event close to his heart. With a positive 2016 season including IRONMAN 70.3 Mallorca, IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire, IRONMAN 70.3 Dublin and IRONMAN Barcelona where he achieved a Welsh record time of 8hr34, Oliver will be looking to finish well in his home town!

Please note there is no parking in the immediate vicinity of the Five Arches or Rectory Car Park, please use the car parks listed below, they are all a short walk from the venues. Please ensure you use the car parks indicated, cars parked on the road can affect the race course and will be moved if necessary.

Athletes arriving by car on race morning will be directed to the Salterns Car Park. Standard parking charges will apply.

There is no access to the Multi-Storey car park during the above times. There will be access via the town diversion throughout the rest of the day.

For the remainder of the day the car parks will be available however this involves vehicles crossing the bike course as it travels through Tenby so delays are inevitable. We recommend that visitors use the Park & Ride in the first instance.

North Beach Car Park, Gas Lane, Tenby SA70 8AG 300 spaces. North Beach car park is the ideal location for athletes coming to Tenby who don’t need their car on race day. Parking tickets can be purchased for multiple days. Note there is no vehicle access to North Beach Car Park 11:30am-00:30 on Race Day

PARK & RiDEWe strongly recommend spectators use the park & ride service from Carew Airfield on race day. Athletes can also use this and travel free.

Advanced ticket purchase from Registration in the Five Arches, Tenby 09:00-17:00 Thursday 15th, Friday 16th and Saturday 17th Adult - £5, Children’s (3 – 14) - £3, Children 2 & Under – Free

The ticket covers all journeys on Sunday. The service can only accept Guide Dogs.

SWiM2.4 miles clockwise - 2 laps with a rolling start. Athletes exit from the water and go around Goscar Rock after the first lap to commence the second lap.

After exiting the swim, the athletes will complete a 1km run to transition in the Rectory Car Park where they will change for the bike leg of the event.

BiKEThe IRONMAN Wales bike course starts and finishes at Transition based at the Rectory Car Park. It is a two loop course totalling 180 kilometres of spectacular coastal views through idyllic towns over an undulating course with some good climbs towards the end of the loops!

The first loop is longer, extending west from Lamphey to Angle peninsula and Pembroke, returning through Lamphey before turning north through Carew and Templeton to reach Narberth. From Narberth the course travels south through Saundersfoot to return to Tenby via St Brides Hill (famously known as Heartbreak Hill with a roaring atmosphere).

On the second lap, cyclists turn east in Lamphey to repeat the same route through Narberth and Saundersfoot to reach the transition in Tenby.

RUNThe IRONMAN Wales marathon course takes place in and around the picturesque town of Tenby. Exiting transition along South Cliff Street,

turning left onto South Parade skirting the town wall, travelling north towards New Hedges via the Narberth Rd. It returns on the same route but continues into the heart of this historic town, taking in The Croft and the harbour. IRONMAN Wales’ run course is known as one of the hardest on the IRONMAN circuit with a course elevation of however one of the most atmospheric for spectator support around Tenby. Athletes will collect 4 lap bands at New Hedges before heading to the finish line.

A spectacular setting as the cyclists negotiate the steep descent from Summerhill and then steep ascent up Hean Castle climb where support will be needed on tired legs!

With Saundersfoot hosting one of the toughest but liveliest climbs this is another great location, with entertainment planned this is set to be a great place to watch bikes. Spectators line the streets to encourage athletes up making an electric atmosphere. Make sure you watch out for the Welsh dragons!

A spectator hotspot will be situated on the high street, where you will be able to view the swim and also the athletes on the run course.

You can also view the run course from New Hedges Village, Narbeth Road, South Parade and The Harbour. Vehicle access to Tenby is available all day from the A477 via the B4318 Gumfreston Road with the main car parks in town accessible.

Taking place on Saturday 17th September, iRONKiDS Wales will see 1000 stars of the future taking to the streets of Tenby.

iRONKiDS is a run only children’s race for 3-14 year olds. The first wave of athletes will start at 15:00 and finish under the famous IRONMAN Finish Arch.
