IRONMAN was founded in 1978 when some athletes in Hawaii were discussing who the fittest athlete was; the swimmer, the cyclist or the runner. Hawaii remains the spiritual home of IRONMAN, with the World Championships held every year in October in Kailua-Kona on Hawaii’s Big Island. Each IRONMAN race is a qualifying event for Kona, not only for the Pro athletes, but age group athletes can earn a slot in Hawaii and represent their country at the IRONMAN World Championship.
