Head CoaCH

Steve SmithBaylor university

Steve Smith began his second decade as head coach at Baylor in 2005 and guided the Bears to a 39-21 regular season record this season. In his first decade, Smith led the program to near unprecedented heights, including the most successful six-year run in the program’s 100-year history.

Smith has compiled a 411-255-1 career record, all at Baylor. He holds the best winning percentage of any coach in Baylor baseball history, and he ranks second among the program’s 18 head coaches in career victories. Smith has led Baylor to seven NCAA Regional appearances, two NCAA Super Regional appearances and the 2000 Big 12 Conference title. He also has coached 12 All-America selections and seven USA Baseball National Team members while at Baylor.

In January 2005, Smith was named head coach of the USA Baseball National Team. Smith is just the second Big 12 Conference coach to serve as head coach of the national team. He also previously served as an assistant coach under his former Mississippi State boss Ron Polk on the 1998 USA Baseball National Team that posted an overall record of 30-12.

Smith was named head coach of the Baylor baseball program July 29, 1994, replacing Baylor legend Mickey Sullivan, who retired after 21 seasons. Smith is the 18th head coach in Baylor history. He was named the 2000 Big 12 Coach of the Year after guiding the Bears to their first outright conference title in 77 years.

In January 2005, Smith was elevated to third vice-president of the American Baseball Coaches Association and will serve as the organization’s president in 2008.

An accomplished pitching coach, Smith has tutored six pitchers in the last 12 years who were selected in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft. He has also had at least one all-conference pitcher in each of the last 12 years. In 1999, under Smith’s tutelage, right-hander/designated hitter Jason Jennings won the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award as the best player in college baseball and was the 16th overall pick by the Colorado Rockies.

Following the 1998 season, Smith spent the summer serving as the pitching coach for the USA national team. Smith directed a pitching staff that consisted of the nation’s top freshmen and sophomores to a 30-12 record with a 3.72 team ERA. The USA National Team played in the World Championships qualifier in Managua, Nicaragua, before advancing to the World Championships in Palermo, Sicily.

Smith began his playing career as a two-sport standout in baseball and football at Gulfport (Miss.) High School, where he quarterbacked the 1978 Gulfport High team to a state championship. On the diamond, Smith excelled as a pitcher. As a senior, he was 8-2 on the mound with a 0.81 ERA, earning all-state honors and an appearance in the 1979 Mississippi High School All-Star Game.

Eric Campbell took over full-time operations of the USA Baseball National Team (Collegiate) in 2004 when in January of that year, he was named General Manager of National Teams. In his first attempt, Eric’s 2004 National Team captured the gold medal at the FISU World University Baseball Championships in Taiwan.

Previously, Eric was the Director of Junior National Team (18-under) Operations from 2000-03. He guided the USA Baseball Juniors to a pair of medals (’00 & ’02) at the IBAF World Junior Championships, as well as three medals in COPABE (Pan American) qualifying events (’00, ’01 & ’03).

Campbell was also instrumental in the success of the Tournament of Stars in Joplin, Missouri. In his four summers selecting and identifying the nation’s top high school juniors and seniors, Team USA posted an overall record of 33-8 (.804 winning %).

Andrew Norden has been an assistant athletic trainer at Duke University since 2003. His duties include working with the Blue Devil baseball and men’s soccer teams. Norden joined the Blue Devils after serving as an assistant athletic trainer for Concordia University in River Forest, Ill., from 2001-03.

Norden earned his Bachelor’s degree from Hope College in 1999 and his Master’s degree from Indiana University in 2000. He has been a member of the National Athletic Trainer’s Association since 1995 and the North Carolina Athletic Trainer’s Association since 2003.

The 27-year-old native of Jenison, Mich., is married to Dr. Shanna Ten Clay. Shanna is a resident anesthesiologist at the Duke University Medical Center. The couple resides in Durham with their dogs, Wrigley and Ivy.

John Cohen just wrapped up his second season at the helm of the Kentucky baseball program where in two years he has posted a 53-57 overall mark. Prior to his current post, Cohen had a two-year stint as the hitting coach at Florida. He also spent four seasons as the head coach at Northwestern State. In that span, he compiled a 146-84 (.635) mark and directed the Demons to a pair of Southland Conference titles (‘98, ‘01) when he was named the Southland Coach of the Year each time.

Cohen played at Mississippi State from 1987-90. He earned first-team All-SEC honors as a senior and was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 22nd round of the 1990 MLB Draft and spent two years in the Twins’ minor league system.

Cohen, 38, graduated high school from Tusacaloosa (Ala) Academy in 1986. He and his wife Nelle have been wed for 12 years and have two daughters - Jordan (11), and Avery (7).

In two seasons as the head coach at Oral Roberts University, Walton led ORU to its first 50-win season in 20 years and captured back-to-back Mid-Continent Conference titles to give the Golden Eagles their record-breaking eighth straight crown. The 2004 Mid-Con Coach of the Year spent his six previous years as ORU’s pitching coach.

Walton had an illustrious career as a pitcher at Oklahoma State from 1983-86. At OSU, he compiled an overall record of 20-6 and helped lead the Cowboys to four straight College World Series. Walton was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 1986 and compiled a record of 23-8 in the minors.

A three-sport star in high school in Rutherford, NJ, he earned All-State honors in soccer, basketball and baseball, and in 1999 became the first athlete inducted into the Rutherford High Hall of Fame. Walton and his wife Michelle have three children: sons Davis (13), and Donovan (10), and daughter Cassie (6).

Larry Little is in his fifth year as assistant director of athletic media relations and publications coordinator at Baylor. He serves as the primary media relations contact for baseball and the secondary contact for football. During Little’s time on staff, Baylor has received several high marks from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). His 2005 Baseball Game Program was selected “Best in the Nation,” as was the publication’s cover design.

A 1998 Louisiana Tech journalism graduate, Little also has worked at Mississippi State, the University of Virginia and his alma mater. Little handles radio play-by-play duties for Baylor’s volleyball team and is an alternate for Baylor baseball broadcasts.

Little, who calls Ruston, La., home, is a member of CoSIDA, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers’ Association and the Football Writers’Association of America.

Jamieson just completed his 11th season as the Mizzou skipper after serving as an assistant coach for six years with the Tigers. Jamieson has overseen the Tigers’ move in 2000 into Taylor Stadium/Simmons Field, one of the nation’s top collegiate diamonds, as well as Mizzou’s transition into the Big 12 Conference in 1997. During his time as the Tigers’ head man, Missouri has been a force to reckon with in the Big 12 Conference as well as nationally, recording at least 30 wins in nine of the last 10 seasons. In 2005, the Tigers posted an overall record of 40-23 and advanced to the NCAA Regional in Fullerton, CA - their third consecutive trip the NCAA Tournament. It was the 17th NCAA bid in school history and the fourth under Jamieson.

In 2004, Jamieson recorded his 300th career win with a victory over Memphis. He also led the Tigers into the 1996 NCAA Midwest Regional and was named the Big Eight Coach of the Year that season.
