Dear Parents and Friends

A warm welcome to Week 2. The school year has commenced well and classes are now in full swing. It would be a rare year indeed if there were not some ‘readjustments’ needed as students negotiate the constraints of school life, following an extended holiday break. I sense that most students have settled in well, with genuine efforts being made to get the year off on a good footing. Many students I have spoken to are pleased to be back and were quickly into the swing of things.

There were some tears and upsets, especially as new students confronted a different environment and the need to establish new friendships. Entering a new organisation can be daunting, even for adults. Just think back to when you were new to a job, club, group or class. Coping strategies are acquired through such life changes, or transition stages as they are sometimes called. Sociologists even give a name to such events - they speak of rites of passage. Changing schools is a rite of passage, as are major events such as graduation, starting work, marriage etc. As parents it is not easy to cope when our child is upset, but often it is such experiences that help young children and teenagers learn resilience, an important ingredient in becoming more independent.

The College strives to make the commencement of a school year as trouble-free as possible. Inevitably, there are small glitches from time to time, but you can be assured that we work towards making learning events of new experiences. For example, the first group of students at Mt Binga, are already deeply immersed in new experiences. Similarly, children new in Prep have had to adjust to being with a group of other children in a learning community. They will gain valuable lessons about valuing others, sharing and respecting authority.

Welcoming Service(s)

Last Friday we held a Years 1-12 Worship Service involving the installation of our Junior and Secondary student leaders for 2016. It is important that we

gather together as a whole community and I thank those parents and Council members who were able to attend this important occasion. In addition, the Welcoming Service, held last Sunday at Immanuel Church, was a joyous event. The blessing of all Immanuel staff, and the installation of new staff was a gracious and supportive process. Thank you to everyone involved.

Interhouse Swimming Carnivals

What a pleasure it has been to visit our two Interhouse Swimming Carnivals this week. Although quite hot, the team spirit was electric. Thank you to the many parents and staff who assisted in diverse roles, and to Mr Johnson and Mr Harris for their outstanding organisation.

Congratulations to all competitors, and especially to our record breakers Kai Smeaton who broke three longstanding records (boys 16 years): Backstroke (set in 1992), Freestyle (set in 2000) and Butterfly (set in 2000 and broken by over 1.5 seconds) and Ethan Wildin Murrihy, who broke the Freestyle record (boys 13 years set in 1995).

Out of the Box

Parents and students in Years 7 and 10 attended the Out of the Box nights last week and received their Surface Pro 4 computers.

This evening, Wednesday 3 February, students in Years 3 and 5 will receive their iPads as well as further information regarding the blended learning program in the Junior School. Please meet in the Lecture Theatre, 5.00pm – 6.00pm for Year 3 students and 6.30pm – 7.30pm for Year 5 students.

Car Parking – Thanks and Reminders

While I admit that our traffic flow is not perfect, I think we manage the drop-off and pick-up times well. You just have to visit other local schools at 3.00pm to gain a greater appreciation! I remind parents that the first few weeks are usually the busiest – once routines have been established the volume of traffic will settle down. The various drop and go zones around the campus are always the best option and work well when vehicles continue to move up to the end of the line. Please continue around the car park and join the end of the queue if your child is not at the drop and go zone when you reach the front of the line – do not wait. If you’re collecting a Junior School and Secondary School student, may I suggest that you wait until 3.20pm to collect your children? This will alleviate some congestion during the peak time.

It is timely to remind families of their responsibilities while driving on campus. Please be aware that the local public road rules apply. To that end, I must make you aware that the Nambour Road Policing Unit will be patrolling various schools during peak periods over the next few weeks. More specifically, they will be targeting illegal parking; drivers using mobile phones; seat belt offences and any other road rule breaches.

Every blessing for the week.

Yours in Christ

Best Laid Plans

How has the school year started for you? Has it been smooth sailing – everything going to plan? Or have there been some hiccups?

Perhaps a missed bus resulted in tears; a lost uniform caused angst; perhaps a misplaced library book led to a rant about being organised; a car park gridlock made your blood boil, or maybe, no bread for sandwiches upset your best laid plans.

We all have good intentions; we want to do our best, but sometimes life gets in the way and we stumble. We are reminded that we are human and in this life things are not perfect.

But, rather than get frustrated or look to blame, perhaps in these times we can remember that while our best laid plans can be foiled, even in these times, good things can come.

God’s promise is sure:

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

So as we begin 2016, please know that while your short term plans may falter, God’s long term plans for you are good.

May you see the good, rest in His peace and enjoy the journey this year!

“What did you do at school today, darling?”

“Nothing” (Nothing? Seriously? Nothing?? I am paying good money for NOTHING?!!)

“Who did you play with?”

“Dunno” (Does that mean no one?? Good grief, I hope it was someone!!)

Sound familiar? It takes a fair act of faith for parents to send offspring out into the world alone and our need for information can be overwhelming. Sadly, children can be quite hopeless at telling us the things we really want to know. At the end of the first day back at school I really wanted to ask “Did you like your teacher and did you make me proud and did you get enough fluid and were you sun safe and were you kind to everyone and was everyone kind to you and did you miss me and were your new shoes comfy and did you enjoy the nutritious veggie slice I lovingly prepared?” I am smart enough (now) to know that this would not have ended well.

So how can we get a little information from our children about their day? Here are a couple of tried and tested tips:

1. Resist the urge to bombard your children with questions as soon as you see them (tough, I know!) Let them wind down a little before asking them anything - put some music on in the car, allow them to eat, or tell them something about your day.

2. Make a game of rating the day on a scale of 0-10. This can be easy and not require much chat (in fact, fingers do nicely). Make sure you share your number as well (additional tip: best not to share zeros for days on end, even if it’s truthful!) and don’t probe too far if you meet with resistance.

3. Play “Two truths and a Trick” at the dinner table. In this game where everyone shares two things that are true about their day and one that is false while others try to spot the trick, it’s amazing what you hear that would never be shared otherwise (sneaky but effective!!).

4. And finally, children work on their own internal schedules, not ours (annoying, but true). They will share when they are ready. Make sure that you are not so busy that you miss it when it happens.

Take care out there!

Junior School

Scott Moore – Head of Junior School

Last week was a great start to the school year. Students have settled into their new classes and school year very well. Thank you to Junior School children who buddied our new students – you have done a wonderful job! Our Prep students were particularly excited as they began their formal school education.

Presentation of Bibles

This Friday in Chapel, our Year 3 students, as well as those students who are new to Immanuel in Years 4-6, will be presented with a Bible. This Bible is a gift from the Immanuel Congregation and is for their own use. Thank you to the Congregation for their continued support in this area.

Junior School Captains

At Friday’s Years 1-12 Worship, our Junior School Captains, Vice Captains, Worship Captains and House Captains were installed. Congratulations to you all. We look forward to our student leadership group working alongside and leading our Junior School students in 2016.

Years 3-6 House Swimming Carnival

The Interhouse Swimming Carnival was held on Monday at the Nambour Aquatic Centre. Thank you to the many parents for coming along to watch, and/or help out on the day. Congratulations Fraser House!

Contact Details

Please ensure that the office has been provided with any updated or changed family circumstances or contact details. It is important that our records are kept up to date, especially if we need to contact you in an emergency. Please return the excursion form to Student Services if you have not done so already.

Assembly

Our first awards assembly for 2016 will be held next Monday, 8 February at 2.30pm in the Junior School Hall. All are welcome.

Appointments with Staff

We encourage parents to make appointments with staff to discuss any issues or concerns you may have regarding your child. Please make these appointments through the Junior School Office or by contacting the relevant staff member via their Immanuel email. Staff often have

duties straight after school or before school that they need to be at and cannot give parents the time or attention required. We will be more than happy to make these times for you; ensuring staff are available at times suitable to both parties.

Arrival at School

Any children arriving at school prior to 8.20am, with or without parents, must wait at the Undercover Area outside the Tuckshop. Children are not to go to their classrooms to wait with parents or drop off bags. A staff member is on duty in the area at this time to provide supervision for students who arrive early. Parents may also wait in the Undercover Area with their children. Between 8.00am and 8.20am, staff are usually involved in meetings. Parents, please remind your children of these procedures when bringing them to school. Your support is greatly appreciated.

OSHC (Outside School Hours Care)

OSHC is available from 3.00pm – 6.00pm each day and 8.00am – 6.00pm during holiday periods. If you would like further information or need to enrol your child, please contact OSHC on T: 5477 3418. If you would like to be involved on the Management Committee or are just interested in finding out further information, please speak to our Coordinator, Ms Tamara Scutts. Our AGM date is coming up soon – date to be advised. We welcome new members.

Student Representative Council (SRC)

Students in Years 3-6 will be invited to nominate to be a member of the Junior School SRC this week. Each class from Years 3-6 will have one representative each semester, with the SRC being led in 2016 by Mrs Stewart and the Junior School Captains and Vice Captains. I’m sure they will have an exciting year of service to the community ahead.

Thank you for the continued support of your child’s learning journey in the Junior School.

Welcome to 2016. A reminder that Term 1 fees were due on Friday, 29 January 2016.

Please be aware that full payment of term fees is required by this date unless other payment arrangements (direct debit via Payway) have been made with the Business Manager. Non-payment of fees by Friday, 12 February 2016 will result in a $50.00 administration charge being applied to your account. If you are unable to finalise your account by that date, please contact the Business Office on T: 5477 3435 to make alternative arrangements.

Thank you.

Mt Binga – Group 1

Reports back to campus indicate that students from 10A and 10C are having a terrific time at Mt Binga and have already enjoyed a number of activities including the first of their outdoor camps, navigational exercises, hiking and horse riding. Despite the hot conditions they are working well as a group and are making the most of the opportunities presented to them. They are also very appreciative of the hand written correspondence that they have received from their family and friends – I encourage you to keep this up as much as possible.

Students are permitted to wear suitable casual clothes on this day (i.e. enclosed shoes, hat, shoulders covered, no midriffs etc) and are asked to provide their own morning tea, lunch, water bottle, pen and a cushion. They have also been asked to reschedule any private music lessons that they may have, so as not to miss out on any part of the experience. Should you have any queries regarding the Retreat, please do not hesitate to contact Kathrin Koning E: [email protected] or Gayla Mathews E: [email protected].

Years 11 and 12 Parent Information Evening (16 February)

I ask that all Years 11 and 12 parents note this event on their calendar. With “A Parents Survival Guide for Years 11 and 12” as the theme,

Year 7 Camp (2-4 March)

Next week Year 7 students will receive an information package for their upcoming camp, which is scheduled to take place from 2-4 March at Woodford. The aim of the program is to foster positive relationships between students and staff, and to develop responsibility, accountability, belonging and care among the cohort. To help us best prepare for the camp, would you please ensure that your child has all the required items outlined on the information sheet and that the medical and parental consent forms are returned to the Secondary School Office by Friday, 19 February.

Mt Binga Group 2 (23 February – 20 March)

Today the students in our second Mt Binga group received their information package during Home Group. Included in this package is a medical form and a cabin preference form, both of which need to be returned to the Secondary School Office by Monday, 8 February. Please don’t hesitate to make contact with the Secondary School Office should you have any queries E: [email protected] or T: 5477 3461.

Mathematics Tutorials

Mathematics tutorials will commence during Week 2, with at least one Mathematics teacher and two Mathematics Ambassadors available each Tuesday and Thursday lunchtime from 1.15-1.45pm. These tutorials offer assistance to students who require additional help with their work, or who wish to extend their mathematical thinking. Students may attend each week or as a need arises and there is no cost involved. Tutoring will be held in rooms B5/6 and is open to all students in Years 7-12. Students should also be aware that the Mathematics staff may be approached before school and during lunch breaks if assistance is required with homework or any other Mathematics concerns. Please don’t hesitate to contact Mr Luis Rauth, Head of Mathematics E: [email protected] should you have any queries.

Year 12 - Preschool/Year 1 Photo Required

All students in Year 12 are asked to forward a photo of themselves from when they were around the age of five to Miss Karageorge prior to the end of the term. This will be used for our 2016 Valedictory preparations, which are already in the making! Photos (either in digital or hard copy form) need to be clear and not too distant. For example, a Preschool or Year 1 portrait photo would be ideal!

Interhouse Swimming Carnival

This year’s Interhouse Swimming Carnival was staged in very warm conditions at the Nambour Aquatic Centre. Despite the heat, it was certainly a very entertaining and exciting day. The students performed particularly well with a number of longstanding records broken – a great achievement given the conditions. A full report of the days’ events will be included in next week’s newsletter. I commend the outstanding work of the House Coordinators and recently appointed House Captains. Thank you to the amazing Secondary School staff for their assistance and enthusiasm on the day. It was pleasing to see many parents and friends who came along to support the students.

A squad of swimmers will now be selected to represent the College at the Independent District Swimming Carnival to be conducted at the Noosa Aquatic Centre on Thursday, 18 February.

SCISSA

Term 1 SCISSA competitions commence next Wednesday. ILC is fielding teams in the Junior Boys and Girls Volleyball, Intermediate Girls Volleyball and Senior Boys and Girls Soccer. Fixtures for these competitions are currently being developed and training sessions will be confirmed and communicated as soon as possible.

District and Regional Trials

District and Regional Trials provide opportunities for students to seek selection in representative teams. On Tuesday, February 9, trials for the following sports will be held:

• Tennis – 19 years

• Softball – 19 years

• Baseball – 18 years

• Girls AFL – 16 years

• Rugby League – 15 years and 18 years

• Volleyball – Girls and Boys – 15 years and 19 years at NCC

• Touch – Boys and Girls – 15 years at MFAC

• Netball – Girls – 15years and 19 years at MFAC

Students interested in these trials should contact me in the Stadium. Permission forms to attend these trials must be collected from me prior to Thursday, 4 February.

Information regarding other sports such as rugby, netball and basketball will be included in Student Notices in coming days.

Staff and students are always grateful to our FoM, whose assistance and dedication ensure our performances

and events run smoothly and successfully.

Instrumental Music Application Guidelines

Music lessons for the following instruments are available on campus:

• Acoustic Guitar • Alto Saxophone • Baritone Saxophone • Bass Clarinet • Cello • Clarinet • Double Bass • Electric Bass • Electric Guitar • Euphonium • Flute • French Horn

• Music Theory • Oboe • Piano • Tenor Saxophone • Trombone • Trumpet • Tuba • Tuned Percussion • Viola • Violin • Voice • Untuned Percussion (including Drum Kit).

Please note that students may commence piano, violin and cello lessons in Year 3 and all remaining instruments in Year 5. In exceptional circumstances applications will be considered for students wishing to commence learning at a younger age. Lessons are held in class time in group or individual lessons on a rotational timetable.

The College implements a fee level common to all students. The current rate for lessons is $25.00 per half hour for group lessons and $32.50 per half hour for individual lessons plus GST if applicable. This fee scheme is advised by the Music Teachers Association of Queensland (MTAQ). The College endeavours to ensure that we continually meet the fee scheme requirements set by MTAQ. Tuition is paid directly to the Music Tutor one term in advance. College instruments are available for hire at a cost of $80.00 per term. Forms for hiring an instrument are made available on a needs basis.

All students are enrolled for a full term. The College believes there should be an honest commitment for a year’s learning. Tuition can only be discontinued if the parent initiates a meeting with the Instrumental Music Coordinator and provides written confirmation.

Many parents do not know whether it is worthwhile for their child to learn a musical instrument or which instrument to learn. To assist parents in this regard, a Music Aptitude Test is available. If you wish to take advantage of this opportunity please contact me.
