19 Th Annual Shortest Day Contest Mercer Rugby Field (near Auckland, New Zealand

It’s no secret that weather plays a huge part in determining the success of contests, so it was with a lot of trepidation I made the call to go ahead with the 19th Annual Shortest Day Contest on the scheduled date.

Last year we switched to the option date and lost a lot of entries. The forecast this year predicted thirty knot winds on the day but I was mildly confident that the forecasts didn’t apply to the Mercer Rugby League club field.

Events proved that I was lucky. When I arrived to set up at 0745 the adjacent Waikato River was a mirror and the hills to the southwest protected us from the worst of the winds. I was anxious to test the latest upgrade to my Combat clock. Yup, a 130 Db truck horn is quite audible.

This year we had a near even split in North Island and South Island entries with five resident and one transplanted South Islander (Kevin Barnes) flying and six from the North, the forecast had put a few locals off so no Dave Thornley or John Ryan this year.Once some faulty streamers were sorted we were underway.

Early matches were notable for being largely even on cuts once airborne, but non starting motors plagued some of us. Last year too, we had a lot of trouble with no one’s starter batteries being up to it. In some cases this year, the reverse was true.

I loaned Bob Morgan my freshly charged no voltage drop back up battery which gave two starts and two fried plugs in quick succession, oops sorry Bob!

Early stand out matches were Kevin V Simon which had a pretty spectacular line tangle and Rob Wallace V Glen for another reason. It resulted in a very second hand ASP 15 for Rob and a very third hand model for Glen, the last of my Spain 2006 models I believe. That’s approximately 700 years old in combat model years.

Glen was out of the contest after both his allowed models were destroyed. He reversed sharply into my propeller yer honour.

Danny Walker was flying in his usual unruffled fashion but some narrow losses finished his campaign after lunch. Speaking of lunch, the 12.30-1pm break saw the wind shift round to the North West and intensify. The match between Bob Morgan and I was probably the most effected but it wasn’t too bad. Shortly after the wind went back to the South West for the rest of the day and apart from the odd light rain shower, it was okay all day.

Page 9: CONTROL LINE COMPETITION NEWSLETTER

The last three fliers were Doug and James Palmer and Bryce Gibson.

Doug made short work of James and Bryce but because of the draw and the two life system, Doug had to fly James again for the final.

A great full on match ensued with James taking home the $100 First Prize.Post Contest we retired to the adjacent roadhouse for refreshments and mouth racing, a good competition flown in great spirit. Andrew Robinson who drove up from New Plymouth to assist, reckoned it was the best Shortest Day Contest he’d been to; he didn’t have to do anything!

As ever, thanks go to the contestants as well as Dave Ackery (who circle marshalled every match) and Kevin Barnes for arranging the use of the field.

We’ll do it again for the twentieth edition next year, we welcome all previous and new contestants along to fly, assist or spectate, see you at the solstice June 2018. Bryce Gibson

World Cup Events: There will be two F2A World Cup events held in St. Louis later this summer. One is the USA event and the other is Canadian but they're both flown at the Buder Park site in St. Louis. Here's a link to the F2 site that Jo Halman manages: http://www.fai.org/world-cups/f2-control-line Just scroll down and click on the 2017 section. You'll find results for various events along with the jury report and there's a cumulative total for each category so you'll be able to see who is leading the charge.

Bill Hughes has been active in World Cup competition over the years and your Editor had a chance to sit down with Bill at the Nationals and catch up on his latest accomplishments. He'd won both the Swiss and French rounds and was able to take in the Sebnitz, Germany round too where he placed second. Bill said he was able to save $400 on his airfare (Air Canada) by going a week early which made competing in Sebnitz possible. His departure date was still within the “shoulder season” rather than summer season where fares sky rocket.

Serge Delabarde sent photos and results from the French World Cup in Rouille, France. These events are open to anyone holding an FAI license which is available to Americans through the AMA.

Luc Dessaucy has his lines cut during a race at the Rouille World Cup. No report on where the model landed. Gena Saccavino (daughter of Cesare Saccavino) mixes it up withMathieu Perret and Thierry Ougen in one of the F2C heat races.

First it's Mark Rudner then Chuck against Cary Minor. It doesn't get easy.If you haven't noticed, Andy and Cary Minor are pretty good.

Your Editor arrived at the Nats in time to help pit Ron Duly's 5-engine He111z. How could five .049's generate so much vibration? With Bob Whitney's help we were able to get four running at the same time. Maybe a smooth running engine like an AAC Jet 061 would make life easier or just use four electrics like on Fred Cronenwett's B-29. There's great coverage of the Scale events in Nats News, it's well worth a long, long look.

USA 2018 F2A World Championship Team: Alex Valishev 291.25kph best speed, Bill Hughes 288.45kph, James Van Sant 284.25kph. Ivan Valishev took the Junior spot with 285.2kph.Two time World Champion Carl Dodge put in some nice runs with his vintage F2A model.

Glen Van Sant (next to James) is first alternate, Chris Montagino on far left and Howard Doering on the far right. Howard drove from California in his new motorhome.
