Task Analysis

Task Analysis

What sizes will it need to be ?My CD(120mm in diameter) I create needs to be able to fit in a case I build and be able to be put on shelfs and playable on any devices that can

play CD’sThe poster has be eye-catching and visable from a

distance so A3 will be perfect size for a poster.I also need a A5 flyer so I can hand them out and easily give them to people without struggling to carry it with one hand so I know not much room

is taken up.

Time constraints?I will have 45 hours to complete this task from planning to creation of the products.

What methods might be used to design and make it ?I have a number of different packages on a computer I can use like Corel Packages which include Corel Draw, Corel Trace but I also have a macromedia Package including Fireworks and Photoshop both of these packages I can import my own work e.g Photography, Drawings and enhance them using the software avaiable to create effects and eye-catching designs.

Who is it aimed at ?This is aimed at students that are into rock music so the style of it will have to be bold and unique but not trying to encourage any social or moral issues. Instead something that looks good and not only for one person.

Where and how will it be used ?The promotional purposes of flyers and posters will be sent around the school and advertised in the village. Also Online advertisement would be important e.g. a webpage,Facebook page.T-shirts will also advertise the band as walking round with imaginary and logos that are copyright to the band.Tickets will be used at the concertto make sure they paid for it and the ticket is actually official not fake. Thisw might include material like thermo chromic film and phosphorescent pigment/film.

What materials are suitable ?I have to be able to use one smart plastic (Created in the last 50 years) what will influence environmental issues like biodegradable material. So ideally I would some of the product to biodegrade over time but not at a constant speed that won’t last long.

What kind of functional and aesthetic qualities will your product need to have? The CD cover has to be bold and unique to be eye-catching also promote the band and what genre of music they play which is rock in my case. The product I create needs to protect at least 1 CD I have to put in, In a way that it won’t move in packaging and can withstand damage from drops. This will all help promote the band promote there debut album and concert. And I need it be user friendly so easy to read and look at.

CONTEXTPromotion is important for a new product or an event.Design Task 5A group of students in your school have formed a band and want a complete set of publicitymaterial for their future events. The set must include a CD Case which has a minimum of fourfolding panels containing any number of CD’s and relevant information. The panels can fold in anydirection and could hold a combination of CDs. Promotional material should also contain an itemwhich incorporates a smart or modern material.

Associated LogosOf Rock

These logos are all unique but all look strong and bold with the text, if not, the graphics are often simple or a imaginative symbol to demonstrate the band style. So when I create my logo, I must use something bold with a interesting symbol as a logo. I must not use as font decorative, curly style as it will make the band look soft and not give the type of music what the band represents. For example the Who logo have connected the two H`s and put a arrow on the O this gives is a style but makes it look strong at the same time. The decorative logos would be exampled on Led Zeppelin with the four symbols below his name This demonstrates my point of uniqueness but still looking hard not soft.. I need to make the band logo look tough so it gives the impression that the band plays rock music. The merchandise will have to include the logo but I have to remember this is the style people wear so I have to consider so the logo can’t be like florescent pink as the target market would not buy this as it is too much of a soft colour I would need to use whites, blacks, Red and gold mostly to demonstrate anger and individuality and that sense of I don’t care of what you think of me attitude.

TARGET MARKET

Page 3: Controlled assment blog GCSE

Paper foam insert trays are economically friendly this replaces a normal plastic tray that does not biodegrade. The process of manufacturing them both, they are completely different, as the cardboard slip in produces a lot less CO2 admissions while manufacturing it, where as plastic produces significantly more. So if a company was to use this in there product it could biodegrade a lot faster than a plastic casing. CD cover 125mm tall,142mm wide 10 mm thick.

120 mm DiameterThe colour scheme and writing inside this product represents the graphics the outside has, so you can tell what CD goes with what case.

All the CDs shown with a back has a clear style respecting the themes/ graphics, this has a clear layout of the track order but the Bon Jovi album is not as easily visible as it could be. Compared to other two as the other two are a lot clearer due to the colour scheme.

The Spine: typically has the album name and band, so consumers know who and what, they are looking for/at or buying. This usually follows the theme of the album as well.

PROCESSThe jewel case is formed by a process called injection moulding. This is where under high pressure the thermoset plastic gets pumped into the mould, 3 separate components are made will are front, back and the spine then later on these moulds are hinged to each other forming the jewel CD case.

ENVIROMENTAL DAMAGEThe thermoset plastic can’t be recycled and do not biodegrade. Thermo plastic can be recycled but can not biodegrade causing a problem as they sit in landfills for countless years. In the long-term this could really damage the environment as harmful chemicals are made for these plastics processes, and when more are made more are going to fill up landfills.

Page 4: Controlled assment blog GCSE

The Album cover is critical to this as they can easily go over the top and make the CD look like a metal band but they can also under do it so it looks like too soppy and create a more pop/ hip hop cover. As you can tell from these two album colours that they usually have dull colours but a single point on where to focus on. This is demonstrated in the Bon Jovi album by a knife with wings stabbing through the heart with a golden colour, this is presenting the band as the cover being a symbolic message. As this is a winged creature stabbing a heart so I think it is a angel stabbing love also signifying the track they sung `You give love a bad name`. The Colour gold could also represent the fact that it is there greatest hits and there golden playlist of songs. The graphic is also symmetrical which could be representing a `perfect object` typically tied with angels, or pure beauty. Bon Jovi use shading to create perspective on the vinyl they have created to make it look 3rd Dimension. All the graphics on the cases I have looked at does not offend anyone on cultural , moral or social issues.

The Linkin Park also have a focus with a man raising his hand grasping a microphone. In the background a lot of people are cheering it looks like, this gives the Impression that the guy is leading and everyone agrees with what he says also going with the rock style of not giving a care in the world of what anyone thinks. Linkin park as the crowd gets smaller slowly fading into the distance giving the idea of this rock army following their leader. They have not used gold as I think they believe this isn't there golden playlist instead more of a casual album what they have come up with not knowing is the songs are going to be a craze or one of there worst creations. The army could be represented because it is there live album and this is their followers at one of there gigs to make the band look popular and wanted.

The writing on both is not decorative, it is more bold and assertive with decorative styles underneath the whole writing. The look of them both are to stand out on the shelf with there individuality to create people to look and possibly buy the album because of how the cover looks. Most of the time one iconic figure is used not one iconic person like in the albums Adele 21, Michael Jackson instead the whole band is represented or a logo or drawing to influence what they play and what they represent. Both covers are using black and white but also using there own unique colour e.g. red and gold on the other these both colours are aggressive and compliant the colour black or white. This presents the album as not really feminised.

My CD cover: Looking at the CD covers has helped me decide what

I have to incorporate into my designs; A colour scheme has to be an aggressive scheme, so reds, gold's, blacks and white, also make sure that there is no offensive imagery this can be easily done creating my cover. I also have make sure not to make it too feminine and to ensure the graphics aren't really cartoon in style; instead, they have to look more realistic.

BAND MERCHINDISEOn each of the products produced by this band, the style and font of My chemical Romance is the same. This is more or less like a logo used by this band. The backgrounds of this are quite dark this relates to the scheme as no bright, weaker colours are used. The graphics are not happy, they are quite depressing but imaginary, this suits the rock style. The bag and the t-shirt are either screen printed or transferred as they have a black background. The imagery on the t-shirt is placed this is part of advertising the band on the go. These graphics on the products describe what genre they are so they are not mistaken or mistaken for a different genre. These graphics may offend some Christian because the graphics can be saw as devils which are against Christian morals. The composition of the poster has a black border framing the imagery this can easy be related to horror, the title of the bottom say the black parade is dead so it would be stupid to put like a yellow background on it.

The ticket has the date and time on so you know which concert you are supposed to be at and it has the band name this makes sure you are getting into the right concert. It also tells you a seat as you need to know where you will be sitting but standing does not have any seats so on the ticket it normally just says standing. This normally is directly where the stage is as well to get close to the band/singer. The ticket has a pattern on it what is most likely watermarked so you can tell it is not a fake.

When I design my products for my band I have get the graphics right so people can tell what genre of music my band plays. The colours are also important as I need a quite dark colour scheme to make my graphics come out or I need a colour that stands out of a white t-shirt. Also when I create my ticket I need to include the vital information so the customer knows what date, time, seating, location and the band playing so there is no confusion about weather or not they have the right concert and place.

Page 6: Controlled assment blog GCSE

Moral social and cultural issues

When a designer designs their album cover they have to consider if they would offend anyone on any grounds. These are just some examples. The baby in cellophane is morally wrong as if you did put a baby in a cellophane bag it would die so people thought this was morally wrong. The beetles had to change this album cover as the 3rd one in the line is holding a cigarette is encouraging socially unacceptable behaviour. The exploited album is sexually exploit due to what the demons are wearing and the bondage expressed in the actual picture. This is also expressing a cultural issue associating Jesus and the religious characters are demons, standing on a floor of money. This can be saw as offense as it is offending the church saying they are greedy and they are the real demons they preach about. Breaching copyright laws will also result in a consequence decide upon in court.

When I am designing I have to make sure I do not express any unacceptable /sexual behaviour or make stereotypes really offensive like the exploited album has with the church. And do not breach any copyright laws.

A smart material is a material that changes due to environmental changes around it e.g Thermo chromic and Hydro chromic. A modern material is a material invented within the last 50 years.

These are used in graphics mainly for; Safety, Unique selling point ,fraud prevention and environmental protection these are all quite important as any one of these can make the company lose money either from injury or it’s the same or it has been forged and these are will cost in the long term so smart plastics are used. That why paper foam insert trays have been created so they biodegrade better in a landfill rather than taking hundreds of years.

Smart and Modern materials are used in graphics to tell the difference between fakes and originals. So at something like a concert the special material will show if it is a forgery or not. This gives the product a unique selling point, especially when used for novelty reasons like mugs, wrist bands jackets and shirts. These all are either for safety, forgery or design purposes.

Smart and Modern Materials

Here are some examples of smart material being used in product for fraud prevention on CDs or Concert tickets using thermo chronic pigment or holographic images.

LOGO: My band is called Dionysus and requires a logo, it must:

Be Ergonomically FriendlyBe socially, morally and cutlery acceptableEasily transferable onto other productsBe memorable so people remember itDon’t breach any copyright laws

CD COVER:Store at least 1 CD that is 120 diameter

Inform consumers about what is on the CD by showing information of the band, track list, band logo and a album title

Protect the CD inside and out.

Have a spine to the CD case

Consider using a sustainable alternative so that it doesn't create a environmental problem

It needs to be ergonomically friendly so it is easily visablethroughout the products

Be non-offensive oin social, cultural and moral grounds.

Nothing breaching the copyright laws.

Be square/rectangler shape so that it is easy to store.

A simple graphic layout relating to the band

Throughout this project so far I have carried out a number of different research pages. These past few pages will help me design merchandise and promote the band that I will be creating. I have looked at material, ergonomics and design styles used in a range of products within the rock industry.

All typical logos related to rock have a decorative style within the logo somehow e.g Symbols, imagery. The colours are also quite plain, This makes the logo quite dull as bright colours aren't really used because of the style of the genre. This will be resulted in my logo using only 1 or 2 dull colours and creating a symbol what my band will use.

When I looked at CD Casings I found out that a lot of modern companies are trying to make a sustainable alternative to the plastics used in a jewel CD case. If I used a paper form insert tray and a cardboard casing it would make the product I am creating a more sustainable alternative. This would make it a less economical concern. I found out a Cd case has to be 120mm in diameter and therefore the cover of my bands first album have to be bigger than this but not much as I do not want to waste any material. Track lists are usually on the back with a contrasting colour so the track list stands out from the background, the album and the band are usually put on the side so it can stand out if the albums are turned onto the spines they are still promoting the bands. Looking at the Front of the CD case you can clearly see the bands name and graphics displayed on the case. Looking at the Cd Artwork it os quite plain with one or two graphics making the whole thing stand out. I need to take this all on board all the research I have done and create a graphic what stands out from the rest with 1 or 2 graphics displayed on it.

The last thing I researched was how designers promoted there merchandise, posters, flyers, tickets they somehow or another create a theme all the way through e.g. same colours, same graphic style and they clearly show the band name on the products. I have to remember when I design mine to keep a theme all the way through so when people see my products they know it is related to my band and clearly display the name this will advertise and promote the band on each product produced.

I wanted to create a logo that could easily been seen and recongised but on the way I figured out a lot of problems.

I created logo 1 and then thought it looked a bit childish and cheap and didn’t really suit the genre. It could also offend Christians as they could misinterpret it as Christ.

Logo 2 I decided to without the writing and circle to see if it was any better and I also put a pair of headphones to try and make it look different from Christ to not cause offense. Unfortunately you can still make the comparison and looks more like electronic rather than rock.

Logo 3 I try to steer off the DJ style genre and Christ resemblance so I changed the hair colour to give it more of a punk rock style unfortunately it looks punk and not rock and still looks slightly electronic.

Logo 4 I created more of a logo where there are no colours and looks more like a symbol I think this really worked and you can easily tell the genre and you cant compare it to Christ the eye though don’t really suit the image.

Logo 5 I edited the eye to see if it could resemble a person more but it looked but like a alien and just look unordinary and just creepy and it ruins the logo because of that. You can still tell the genre

Logo 6- you can tell just what the figure is and the eye looks better but I believe that the shape what was supposed to be a D was lost making the whole logo look like a mess.

Page 11: Controlled assment blog GCSE

I have developed my logo to meet the target audience requirements so that the face is more clear and you can tell easier what it is. In stead of the circle and the face I decided to change it to D so it is the start of my bands name. I decided tofocus on a colour scheme of rock of gold and black this is to show what genre it is. I changed it to a D instead of a circle as it was slightly harder to tell what the face was meant to be and I also made the facial features stand out more so people could tell it was a human not another inhuman character. I experimented round with different effects but when I was like the shadow tool and 3D tool it made the genre of rock slowly fade away as it got less and less like rock as it was too over complex and there was too much going on. So I decided to make it simpler so I could communicate the genre of rock more to my target audience.

Page 12: Controlled assment blog GCSE
Page 13: Controlled assment blog GCSE

I created the album title so it is quite dark, I have tried to experiment around to see if I could improve the title by any means. They all have the same layout just things within in the text change.

I used the freehand tool to draw all my letters out, this gave me a chance to release my own creativity and create a unique title what no one else could get the font for. I really wanted to make it different so with the ; N,G,E,S,T and I created a person within the album title name. And I used the colour fill tool to add the solid colour to the lettering.

<- 1: When I created it I wanted something a bit different so I left the hole in all the letters out to see what it looks like. Unfortunately The capital letters overpower the rest of the title.

2:This time I put the holes in and made is grey to give a cold colour. ->I thought the holes in the letters made it blend more but the colours contrasted it too much and looked ineffective because not every letters had the grey.

<- 3: I removed the grey and really liked what I saw. It looks good because every letter has black and white and it is not like some have grey making them stand out more. This give the rock feel without going over the top on the colours.

4: For my final development I made the title red. This made the ->rock feel for the title go as I think it is a too bright red and gives off a different sense. I also think the colour does not suit the album title positioning and layout.

Page 14: Controlled assment blog GCSE

COREL TRACE

COREL TRACE

I used Corel trace to get my primary images editable then I imported them and I deleted the parts what I didn’t need then I regrouped the image so it was easier to move. The ground was made from a rectangle box then I converted it to curses to make bumps along the floor. I used the same colour floor as the man so they would blend in to each other. Next I imported the title and filled in the gaps with black so it suited the background. I then imported the lion from Corel trace and change the belly and the tuff so it looked more like a lion in silhouette , I then changed the lion into a darker shade of black so you could see the lion coming out the person, I thought this would look better if I made it look like the lion was coming out the man.

So first I used the smudge tool to get the lines coming out of the man into the beast and then the interactive transparency tool to fade the character so it looked more or less like he was fading into the animal. I then started changing the colours of my lion and outlines of it as you can see on the next slide.

Page 15: Controlled assment blog GCSE

I used Corel trace to get a man and the lion, from this I used the Smudge tool to get the lines coming out his legs and then used the Interactive transparency tool to make the body fade into the lions. I then thought after 2 that the lion was dark so I experimented with colours as you can see in 7 and 6 and 5 I. I think it looked better in a cold colour and a solid colour no like 5 with red outlines going through the whole lion. So after 5 I decided to change the composition and bring the title down a bit so it fit onto a CD cover easier. Design layout number 3 is how I created the items and what the cover is made of.

From what I can see no Social, Moral or Cultural issues are exploited or used in the imaginary that I can see of. The album title is visible but I think if I put my logo on it would ruin the layout of the title so I will place in a more covenant place within my album layout.

I think 5 represents rock more but 4looks more techno because of the of the lighting, So I think I will go with design 5 as it gives a feel of rock and has a basic layout. The titles and graphics on the actual CD cover I think compliment each other on 5 where as number 1 you can hardly see the lion coming out the man and on 4 it is overpowered by a techno feel with lighting coming out the title.

When I first created my net test the sides were over and wouldn't fit on the page so I shrunk the inside to half the size

I half the size of both so I could a viewer before the actual disk. And I created it so its like a wallet.

I created a design but I found a problem of it not having a locking mechanism this made the wallet design style pointless as it just flaps about. To start of with I forgot a spine on the end so the page don’t fully cover the back it only partly covers it as it overlaps the spine! To make more environmentally friendly I decide to include a paper-foam insert tray. This allows the Packaging to bio-degrade over time. This makes my packaging less harmful to the environment.

NET TEST 1

I added a spine so it folds perfectly over so it does not have to stretch to lock this also gives the net some extra support as well. The only problem I see with this is that the viewers won’t be on the CD so I will have to change the placment of the two flaps and instead of them being on the front cover they Will have to be on the back so it can cover up the CD inside the net.

I thought to change the over cover to a diagonal shape it would fit in the lock but I decided this would look stupid compared to the square one with a tab.

I stuck with this design and added a locking mechanism so it would lock properly.

Page 18: Controlled assment blog GCSE

I decided to incorporate the lion I used in my CD cover as I thought that the graphics fitted the rock genre nicely, So I first started off with my black background and then I converted it to a bitmap, I next used the scraperboard tool in the bitmaps option to make the background grey with black bits. I then coreltraced the lion in again and deleted everything apart from the head and once I done that I deleted the inside of the mouth, I then coloured it all black and established where the teeth were and coloured them in white, Once I dragged it on the background it was too dark. I then took it back off the background and started to colour different sections of the lions in browns. Once I was happy with what I had done I then went onto creating and designing the style and size of the font. When I arranged everything I thought I must include the logo as then people can tell what band it is so I slipped that in the corner, After that I was happy with what I created as I did it all without over complicating it and then I still achieved

the style of it looking like rock.

Corrugated Card is usually 0.25mm thick and weighs more than any other card so the stand has more storability and tolerance to heavy item/objects. This is used for a lot of products as they.Corriflute Card is normally light weight but is reasonably tough it is also really easy to cut with a crafting knife this product can also be recycled after use so it is environmentally friendly.Grey box board- This is a high quality material made form bleached wood pulp this is quite expensive due to the material it is made out of. But it has a excellent printing surface and this can also be recycled.

For my POS Stand I am going to use a backstruct style net as this will support the CD and stand this is also good as you will only need to use one piece of card instead of creating and sticking a load of parts together.

Page 21: Controlled assment blog GCSE

HOW MY GRAPHIC PRODUCTS WILL BE MANFUTURED IN INDUSTRYIn this project I did only a one off print made with laser cutter creating the templates and then someone folding in it and also a A3 Laser printer which is designed to print small volumes. Also I had to manually feed the card in by hand to do both sides, this wouldn't be feasible to do in industry. This is industry would be a bigger process as to start off with theywould printed and cut in batches and each of them would be tessellated to fit as many copies as possible onto the sheet they are printing on. This would also be used through a industrial printer as the printing quality would be a lot better than a home printer. This would probably print as a Gravure print or a lithography print as these are high quality prints and fast to print. I would also emboss the lion on the over cover to make the lion stand out as it is the main attraction this has to be put on before it goes through the die cutter which cuts and scores the outline of the template. The glue tabs will be placed on after it has gone through the die cutter.
