The Organising Committee invites you to the 2019 Combined Australian & New Zealand Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Societies Conference.

We would like to welcome all delegates from Australia & New Zealand, as well as those from further afield, including our International Guest Presenters Dr Steven Haddad, Dr John Kennedy and Dr David Thordarson from the USA.

This meeting provides all of us with the opportunity to share knowledge and research ideas in an effort to expand our field.

We look forward to a dynamic meeting with contributions from local faculty as well as our guest presenters. We hope this meeting will provide an excellent learning opportunity by offering a variety of topics of interest to foot and ankle surgeons from all backgrounds.

We look forward to hosting you on the Gold Coast.

Guest PresentersSteven L Haddad - USASteven L. Haddad is currently a senior attending physician with Illinois Bone and Joint Institute, LLC, in Glenview, IL. He has received the James K. Stack Resident Teaching Award at Northwestern University in 2003. He has also received the Roger Mann Award from the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society in 1996. He has been named Best Lecturer for the Miller Orthopaedic Review Course four years in 2013,

2014, 2016 and 2018.

Dr. Haddad has worked extensively with both the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). For the AOFAS, he was Chairman of the Young Physicians Section (2000-2001), Chairman of the Occupational Health Committee (2001-2003), and Chairman of the Education Committee (2007-2009). He is an Assistant Editor for Foot and Ankle International, and Edited the Workers Compensation Manual for the AOFAS. He is a current and past Program Chair for the AOFAS (2004-2005, 2018-2019), and the AMA Delegate for the Young Physicians Section (1998-2003). He developed and chaired the AOFAS Complications Course in 2007 and 2015, and has participated as faculty in numerous AOFAS courses and webinars. Dr. Haddad is a past president of the AOFAS (2014).

John Kennedy - USADr. John Kennedy graduated from Royal College of Surgeons in 1989 and has since practiced in both Ireland & the U.S. He specializes in osteochondral injuries, Achilles tendon injuries, ankle instability, and ligament reconstruction and has a primary interest in lower limb surgery, particularly sports-related injuries.

Dr. Kennedy’s interest in sports medicine of the lower limb is generated by a long personal history in sports, where he competed at National and International levels in track, rugby, fencing, and water skiing. As part of his Fellowship year, Dr. Kennedy was involved as an assistant team physician to Boston College Football in 1994-95. Since then, he has been involved in the treatment of both recreational athletes as well as elite athletes from the New York Giants, New York Metro Stars, Manhattan Rugby, the National Basketball Players Association, the National Basketball Referees Association, and the National Hockey League Players Association.

Dr. Kennedy’s involvement in all aspects of lower limb sports injuries has led him to publish articles on soccer injuries, running injuries, cycling injuries, ballet injuries, and ankle instability following sports injuries. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles.

David Thordarson - USADr. David Thordarson graduated UCLA school of Medicine 1984, UCLA Orthopedic Residency 1984-1989, UCLA Foot and Ankle Fellowship 1989-1990. 20 years on faculty at USC as tenured Professor of Orthopedic Surgery, 16 years as residency Program Director. 7 years at Cedars Sinai Medical Center as Professor of Orthopedic Surgery, Director of

Orthopedic research. Editor in Chief Foot and Ankle International Sept 2007-now. Over 110 peer reviewed publications, edited 2 textbooks, authored 16 book chapters. Married with 7 children.

Fellows & Registrars

For the first time ever, the AOFAS is offering a prize for the best fellow or registrar paper/presentation at

August ASM.

This unique prize will give the winner the opportunity to travel to the BOFAS meeting in November and compete against winners of other international societies for the International Foot and Ankle Award.

The winner will be awarded registration to the BOFAS meeting, with flights and accommodation

provided by the AOFAS.

To be considered for entry in the competition, abstracts need to be submitted prior to the closing date. Completed presentations will need to be uploaded for selected abstracts and will be scored prior to

the meeting.

Final scoring is provided by the members of the society at the

conference.

Please Note:

It is a prerequisite your consultant registers to attend the conference and is present for the duration

of your presentation.

Call for AbstractsScientific papers are invited for oral presentations. Authors should submit abstracts written in English to Taylored Images no later than 1700 Eastern Standard Time (EST) on Monday 01 July 2019. Papers received after this date will not be accepted for inclusion in this year’s program.

All abstracts submitted are subject to review by the Scientific Program Committee and will, if accepted, be assigned to either oral or poster presentation. Authors may indicate preference for oral (podium) presentation and/or poster presentation during the interactive Abstract submission process. Once abstracts have been accepted for presentation, no changes will be accepted to their content.
