Dear Parents, Students and Friends,

This has been a long term with Christmas fast approaching. Staff and students have been very busy collecting Christmas gifts as part of the TFM Cash for Kids appeal. It is a privilege to work with young people who truly understand the meaning of Christmas and are keen to support some of the most vulnerable members of our society.

The highlight of the term for many was Conyers Company’s performances of ‘Bugsy Malone’ at Billingham Forum on 15 and 16 November. It was a fabulous show with the cast, musicians and crew once again delivering a fabulous performance. Particular thanks to Mr Brown for making such an incredible car.

next term to enhance the work already underway but holiday time is a good time to begin to think about where those next steps might lead.

Within school, one of our priorities is to ensure that students in Sixth Form facing examinations in January are fully prepared. Our preparations are progressing well but we still need to ensure that students find sufficient time to study over the Christmas period. Students should be engaging in a sensible programme of preparation to allow them to relax and enjoy Christmas as well as ensuring they are ready for the challenges of trial examinations. Planning a revision programme in advance is helpful and tutors in school will be able to assist before the end of term.

Wishing you all a peaceful Christmas and a restful holiday.

New School Hall The new hall will see a huge improvement to the facilities on offer to both the school and local community. The hall will host assemblies, performances, activities and examinations, and will free up the gym and sports hall (sometimes disrupted during the summer exam season) for a range of sporting activities. The state of the art hall will sit next to the Astroturf and include 250 place bleacher seating, which will allow the hall to transform into a multi-purpose space.

The Activity Studio Purpose A new community use activity studio focusing on improving health, well-being and tackling inactivity amongst young people and hard to reach groups.

Why it is needed; Go Sport aims to provide a seamless pathway of physical, social and emotional development from early foundation years through to adulthood. This aims to support and nurture a change in behaviour and attitudes towards a more active community; by building a new multi-use activity studio it will accommodate the increasing demand for sports activities locally. Better facilities will significantly improve the current user experience, underpin the longevity of provision and continue to have a positive impact on changing behaviour towards community sport and recreation.

This promotes and sustains well-being and healthy, active lifestyles. Current Go Sport programmes positively impact areas such as social community development, tackling inactivity and bringing sport to a mass market. Investment is needed to enable growth and broaden the community sports infrastructure. Go Sport links to varied and sustainable after school activities that are supported by strong partnerships with local clubs.

A provision of a modern facility would enhance the experience of all and remove potential barriers to engagement and allow activity to be provided all year round without interruption.

Latin and Classics On the 22 November, students in Year 8 took part in a day of languages and culture. Part of this included an introduction to the ancient language of the Romans: Latin. Renowned for being a difficult language, the sessions were guaranteed to be very challenging, but students certainly rose to it! A number of the students had translated a whole paragraph of Latin by the end of a 40-minute workshop, having never come across a single word of Latin before. A true example of perseverando!

A small number of Year 9s have also had the opportunity to study the mythical writings of the Ancient Greeks. A dedicated handful of hard-working and highly able Year 9 students have been meeting on a Wednesday after school to study Homer’s Odyssey, the story of warrior Odysseus’ travels home from the Trojan War. Again, the students have risen wonderfully to the challenge, and can now spot their epithets and chiasmi, and distinguish their nostos from their xenia. The course will end with an A-Level-style essay where the students will be able to demonstrate their hard work.

English A busy term has seen students working imaginatively at all levels. Creative Writing Club has flourished at lunchtimes, as has a Key Stage 3 reading club. Other students at Key Stage 3 have begun a highly able project outside of lessons. All Year 11 students were given the chance to see a complete production of Romeo and Juliet live from the RSC. A smaller group of Year 11s also went to see poet Simon Armitage speak at a local venue - with one student asking him a very pertinent question about how he revised one of his poems for inclusion in the GCSE anthology. In all, another excellent term in English at Conyers.

Health and Social Care This term the Health and Social Care students have had the opportunity to get involved in some excellent opportunities.

In October Year 12 visited the Thackray Medical Museum in Leeds to develop their knowledge of Public Health history and really enjoyed the experience exploring the Victoria Street. They learnt about infectious diseases at the time and how our health has come a long way. The students will use this knowledge for their upcoming assignments.

The Year 13 students raised an impressive £250.67 for MacMillan Cancer Support by baking and selling cakes. Emily Green said ‘I feel really proud of the amount we raised and that is going towards such a good cause.’ Teacher Miss Bray said ‘I am so proud of the students, they worked so hard and showed how well they worked as a team to produce such a fantastic outcome’.

The Year 13 Health and Social Care students were also lucky enough to visit Montpellier Manor Care Home in Stainton. The students were invited for a tour of the three floor facility which caters for the needs of older people and in particular those with dementia. The students are currently investigating the care provided for individuals with the disease. They spent over two hours with the manager of the care home Gail, who kindly gave her own time to answer questions and show them round. ‘We met some of the residents who were able to get involved in loads of activities to improve their health and wellbeing and I was amazed at how high the quality of care was. I want to

come here when I’m older’ said Megan, one of the students.

They finished their visit off with a drink in the café on the ground floor. A fantastic opportunity for the students.

Sumdog Competition in Maths Congratulations to 7pq3 who were the class with the highest average score in the school, 8rs2 had the second highest average score and 7rs2 were the third highest scoring class. Individual high scorers were: Husna B from 7rs2 with the highest score in the whole school, Sebastian C from 7pq3 in second place and in third place were Tara M (7pq1) and Milly L (7rs4). Highest scoring Year 8 was Megan O from 8pq2

Well done to everyone who took part. Even though the competition is over, you can continue playing Sumdog to help improve your maths skills and earn coins to buy things for your Sumdog house.

Year 7 History Project The Year 7 History Project aims to develop the existing knowledge of the students who have been selectively chosen due to their outstanding academic abilities. It is run by a group of Year 10 students who volunteer as a part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award, and they plan and present the sessions to the students each Tuesday lunchtime.

Throughout the project, the students take full responsibility for their work and are allowed to choose which ever topic interested them most from any point in history. At the end, each student will have researched, created and presented their own, individual project to key staff in Conyers. The overall aim is to build on their basic knowledge of history through games and activities to give them a head start on their journey in Conyers; to build their confidence and presentation skills; to teach them fundamental skills for researching which can help them in all lessons; and finally, to encourage them to take opportunities in Conyers like this which will inevitably help them progress in their education.

Learning Support Christmas Party As usual, the Year 10s hosted their annual Christmas party for Year 4 Layfield Primary School pupils. Each student had a responsibility in order for the party to go with a swing. Harry was the team coordinator, with Reece his deputy. Owen, Lewie and Sam were in charge of budgeting, which was done with remarkable enthusiasm and bargain bagging, while DJ Bradley got down with the children. With arts and crafts and party games, planned by creative Erin and a wonderful banquet prepared by our Year 10 students, overseen by Jack, our very own Gordon Ramsay. A great time was had by all.

Learning to sing or play an instrument is one of the most rewarding and enjoyable activities a young person can do. It is widely recognised that studying Music helps develop a wide range of skills and abilities that benefit the student both academically and emotionally. This is especially true for students who participate in ensembles such as bands and choirs.

This term the musicians at Conyers School have performed in Bugsy Malone, the BBC Tees Carol Service, Judges Hotel's Christmas Fair, Conyers School Christmas Market, Yarm and Kirklevington Primary Schools and finished off the year by performing at Conyers School Carol Service on 18 December 2018.

Overall a very busy and successful half term for our Go Music musicians!

Car Parking and Access to the School – Enforcement Action The Green Lane entrance to the school is extremely busy and subject to congestion around 08:30 – 09:00 and 15:30 -16:00. We are seeking the cooperation of parents to keep our students safe coming in and out of school.

Stockton Council have put in new parking restrictions around the entrance to Conyers School, following a series of complaints from parents and local residents about inconsiderate or dangerous parking. This is in addition to the double yellow lines inside the bus bay. Stockton Council parking enforcement team will carry out spot checks and will issue fines to cars illegally parked. The school is enforcing restrictions on access during these hours.

Can we remind all parents / carers:

the bus bay is closed to all cars between 08:30 – 09:00 and 15:20 -16:00, to allow the buses taking students to and from the school safe access

parking on the double yellow lines is strictly prohibited

no vehicle is allowed onto the school site for collecting or dropping off students, without prior agreement (restricted to those students with limited mobility)

the disabled parking bays at the school are strictly reserved for the use of families with disabled students or with injuries, again with prior agreement

parking in the vicinity of the school should be done with due consideration for other users of the pavements, road and local residents.

The bus bays are empty after 16:00 and Green Lane considerably quieter. Parents / Carers may wish to consider arranging to collect their children from this time and so avoid the traffic and parking problems.

These restrictions on parking and access are there to protect the students, parents, visitors and staff. Can we please count on your cooperation with this to help ensure the safety of all concerned.

Thank you for your help with this matter.

Holidays in Term Time

In line with the Local Authority policy for Penalty Notices (Code of Conduct and Procedure for Attendance and Exclusions) which was updated in June 2017, holidays in term time will be unauthorised unless there are exceptional circumstances to support the request.

Therefore a penalty notice will be issued if a child has 10 sessions (5 school days) or more of absence in 6 school weeks which are classified as unauthorised.

A warning letter will be issued in regards to an unauthorised holiday in term time if the request for leave is deemed not to meet exceptional circumstances.

Any parent who feels that there are exceptional circumstances regarding their holiday request should put this in writing accompanied by any supporting documentation to their child’s Pastoral Manager.

Notifiable Illnesses

If your child is diagnosed with chickenpox, shingles or measles please could you inform the school as soon as possible.

Creative Arts It has been a fantastic term for Creative Arts, with Drama, Art and Music students attending many out of school activities and events.

Year 11 students went on our annual visit to Harry Potter Studios and London's West End, taking in performances of School of Rock and Kinky Boots. Students had an amazing time soaking up the atmosphere of the shows, Covent Garden and the National Portrait Gallery. A level Art students visited the galleries of Edinburgh as part of their course looking at Modern and Contemporary artwork.

Our school production this term was “Bugsy Malone” at The Forum Theatre, Billingham. We had four shows over 2 days, which included performances to the local primary schools and our Year 7 and 8 students. This was another superb performance by our students who never fail to impress with their commitment and endless talents and they richly deserved the standing ovation they received. Comments we received included

“It was the first time we have been to see the annual school show, and I don't think I stopped smiling the whole night long. It is incredible how you all brought this to the stage in such a short time. The acting, singing, choreography and music was amazing but the highlight was seeing the faces of the students at the end of the evening, you could see just how much they had loved performing. Thank you for everything you do to make this happen.”

We are already planning our next show at The Forum Theatre, which we hope to announce shortly.

Our Christmas festivities this year included our school band being invited to perform at the BBC Tees Carols for Christmas service at St Mary’s Cathedral in Coulby Newham. The performance from the students was outstanding and we received some wonderful comments about the students’ performance.

Thank you everyone, on behalf of BBC Tees, we really appreciate the time and effort you all put in to being a part of Carols for Christmas; we couldn’t do it without you. I’m sure you will be delighted to know that you helped us raise £1200 for Children in Need, and we have had great feedback from everyone who attended. They loved it.”

The Conyers School annual Carol Service took place at Yarm Parish Church. The service was a special evening and celebrated Christmas with readings, carols and student performances. The atmosphere created was a wonderful start to the Festive Season.

A very special thank you to the students who practiced and performed through the autumn term, and to the dedicated staff who made these events such memorable occasions.

Rights Respecting On the 22 October, a representative from the Unicef children’s charity visited Conyers School to assess the school’s commitment to creating a Rights Respecting ethos. Due to the hard work of staff and students on the day, and throughout the previous year, Conyers was awarded Silver Rights Respecting School status. The award recognises the achievement of the school in putting the United Nations Convention for the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) at the heart of practice, to improve well-being, and help all children and young people realise their potential.

A number of dedicated students meet every Tuesday to ensure that developing and maintaining the award runs smoothly, from creating resources for tutors to use with their tutees to preparing fundraising at the Christmas Market. Their ‘Right of the Fortnight’ scheme, whereby a new right from the convention is studied every two weeks, has allowed students at Conyers to better understand their rights and how to access them. The group is now preparing the necessary groundwork to achieve Gold Rights Respecting status, which we hope will be possible within the next two to four years.

School Payments

When you are making payments for school lunches, school visits, revision guide books etc please could you use our online payment system www.parentpay.com and if possible, use your debit card rather than a credit card as the charges for school are less if debit cards are used.

If you have misplaced your login details, passwords or have a problem paying by either of these methods, please contact the Finance Office, on [email protected] or ring school on 01642 792418.

Alternatively make cheques payable to Conyers School.

Parent's Contact Details

Please could parents ensure that the school has their current telephone landlines and mobile numbers and email addresses when they change them as during the bad weather earlier this year a number of the messages sent to parents could not be delivered as the school did not have their current details. Changes to telephone numbers, email addresses and addresses can be emailed to [email protected]

Thank you for your help with this matter.

School’s Policy on Medicines in School and First Aid in School Reminder

Medicines in school Non Prescribed Medicines: Students may not carry ‘over the counter’ non prescribed medicines with them in school. Staff are not permitted to give or allow students to take non prescribed medication e.g. paracetamol.

Prescribed Medicines: These should only be brought into school when essential; that is where it would be detrimental to a child’s health if the medicine were not administered during the school day. The Teaching Assistant with responsibility for Prescribed Medication will meet with the parent and draw up a Care Plan agreeing the circumstances when this medication can be given to the student.

School can only accept medicines that have been prescribed by a doctor, dentist, nurse’s prescriber or pharmacist prescriber.

Medicines should always be provided in the original container as dispensed by a pharmacist and include the prescriber’s instructions for administration and dosage. A written letter of consent by the parent should be sent into school with the medication and a Care Plan is written.

School cannot accept medicines that have been taken out of the container as originally dispensed nor make changes to dosages on parental instructions.

It is helpful, where clinically appropriate, if medicines are prescribed in dose frequencies which enable it to be taken outside school hours. Parents are requested to ask the prescriber about this. It is to be noted that some medicines that need to be taken three times per day could be taken in the morning, after school and at bedtime.

The only prescribed medications that can be carried by students themselves are epipens, insulin and inhalers. A spare, complete with name of student, should be kept in the Medical Room for emergency use.

All other medications must be stored, administered, and recorded in the Medical Room.

First Aid in school 1. Support for Children with Medical Needs

Parents/carers have the prime responsibility for their child’s health and should provide school with information about any medical conditions. Parents, and the student if appropriate, should obtain details from their General Practitioner [GP] or paediatrician, if needed. Parents should provide the school with full information about their child’s medical needs, including details on any required medications.

2. Provision The school Medical Room is organised to provide treatment for all students and staff for injuries that occur during the school day 8.55 a.m. to 3.40 p.m. Although treatment will be provided by trained staff during school hours for incidents that arise at school, it is expected that for routine medical matters the student’s home GP will be consulted by the parents/carers. A programme of preventative medical screening and immunisations for students is organised on a regular basis, subject to parental consent.

3. Practice All accidents to students on the school site are recorded in the school’s Accident Book. When accidents occur in school, a qualified First Aider may give first aid if appropriate.

Nut allergy A number of our students suffer from nut allergies therefore it is requested that students do not have products containing nuts on the school buses or bring them into school.

Netball

Year 10 and 11 have completed their last games this season at tournaments. The girls have worked hard and enjoyed their netball and working with other schools.

Years 7, 8 and 9 are progressing well in their leagues, with games to come after Christmas before the league finals in February. Well done.

Football

Year 10 Football

ESFA Boys U15 Playstation Schools’ Cup

The Year 10 football team have been making good progress in the National Cup football competition. A recent visit to St. Aidan’s RC Academy in Sunderland was a very competitive game. Conyers went 2-0 behind in the second half, however, through resilient and determined play two late goals from Ben Beals drew that match 2 - 2 and sent the game to a penalty shootout. Assured penalties from Ben, Mackenzie Kirwan, Bilal Shelmani and Ethan Downes secured the victory and the team are now in the last 32 awaiting a game against Malton School, Scarborough.

Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 Central Badminton League

Conyers entered the Central Badminton League for Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 boys and girls this term. Playing fixtures against Ingleby Manor, North Shore, OLSB and Egglescliffe, the players enjoyed their first experience of competitive badminton. The Key Stage 3 boys’ team of Kieran Johnson, Max Hinley, Callum Tranter and Robert Brown all played well, whilst Rosie Dunkerton, Emma Swales, Saki Tanaka and Georgia Whaley worked hard for the Key Stage 3 girls’ team, some playing full games for the first time. Bailey Baldwin, Josh Bailey, Olly Forman and Will Purves represented the Key Stage 4 boys and Serina Wise, Libby Hetherington, Grace McPherson and Izzy Robson played well for the Key Stage 4 girls’ team in highly competitive matches.

Future PE Stars Programme

Year 9 girls future PE stars enjoyed a day out at Northumbria university taking in all the different sports that were on offer and having a tour of the amazing sports facilities.

First up was girls badminton in a very intense match against Loughborough. Next we got practical and had a game of ultimate dodgeball in their brand new sports hall. After this we cooled off by the pool and watched the universities womens waterpolo team play against Durham University. Following this we had a tour of the gym facilites, biomechanics labs and the sprint track. After the tour we attended a Rainbow Laces workshop ran by the University Sports President. In the evening we headed back to Sports Central to finish off the day by watching volleyball and Womens Basketball. The girls were very enthusiastic and enjoyed the sports that were observed.

Indoor Athletics

Year 8 and 9 boys and girls participated in the annual indoor athletics competition at Durham University. The students had a great afternoon and we had lots of individual and team success. Year 8 girls came first and Year 7 boys came second, with standout performances from a number of students. The qualifying teams will participate in the next round in the new year.
