Personal Statement I started off at Northern Kentucky University, not knowing what the future held. After taking a Planning and Development class for my Sociology major, it seemed like something I would really enjoy doing and be passionate about. After I transferred into DAAP, my future became clear. Urban Planning exemplifies everything I want to be a part of, from historical preservation to improving conditions for all of society.

Oakley, Cincinnati is a young profssional neighborhood about 16 minutes from Downtown. Since the mid 19th century when Oakley was founded after the influx of traffic and people resulted from its great connec-tivity source (Maison Rd), it has kept the character of its neighborhood that all can enjoy; from the resi-dents, people passing through, to people shopping or going out to lunch around Oakley Square.

Semester Two: Urban Planning

Page 7: coop portfolio

Oakley was named for the reason that there were great amounts of Oak Trees in this area. The landscape has great effect on this area as a neighborhood. This map displays the greatly residential/wooded streets.

Oakley Square Sensory Maps

The sound and feelings that come from a business district is specific and hard to miss. Around Oakley Square there is a distinct difference between residential to the main strip where people window shop, go out for drinks or food, or hang out at Geier Espla-nade

Page 8: coop portfolio

Oakley is a very walkable and acces-sible neighborhood, residential ar-eas begin almost directly outside of the main business district in Oakley Square.

Oakley’s socio-economic features were very im-portant to this course, and this semester long assignment. Cincinnati as a whole is percieved very differently than each neighborhood indi-vidually. Looking at Oakley as a community and a neighborhood that supports itself there are many things that were found through research and census tract data that was surprising.

Oakley Soil Map (top) & Oakley Private Green Space Map (bottom) show the physical features of this

Land Use

Oakley is highly residential, as it shows in the bottom left hand corner, the residential neighborhood begin almost directly outside of the business district area, which makes it such a walkable area

In the Cincinnati area there are historic and interesting styles or arrchitechture. With these two projects (Architecture Topography Map and the Residential Photorama of a neighbor-hood in Oakley), it becomes more clear as to the differences in types of building structures in the more historic and prominent parts of the neighborhood

Conclusion

After my first two semesters at DAAP with a major in Urban Planning, my skill level and focus is becoming more toned and prominent. Starting from the beginning; draw-ing solid black figure grounds to quickly learning how to add symbology to each of those buildings, my level of interest and passion for cities has blossomed greatly. The character and affect that each individual building, street, business or neighborhood has on the city as a whole is fascinating and is something interesting enough to pursue.
