Term 2 Week 7 2016 A Proud Member of
Kincumba Learning
Community &
Tjudibaring AECG
Welcome to Week 7! As we near the end of term I would like to thank all our wonderful parent helpers. On a regular basis we have parents in our classrooms helping out and we really do appreciate all the support you give to our school and our students. It’s what makes our community so great!
Last month Brianna was in Tamworth for the NSW Girls basketball and this week, three of our talented rugby league players are also contesting the NSW championships in Tamworth. Good luck to Gabe, Jack and Jayden. Another one of our talented sportsman, Joel in 1N, will be competing in the NSW Multi Sports Day at Niagara Park on 14th June. Then in Week 9, Lara from 4M, will be contesting the NSW Hockey championships in Albury. What a talented group of sporting stars we have at Copacabana!
There will certainly be no slowing down as we approach the end of this term. We are looking forward to the 5 lands walk on 25th June and the Copa mini fete on 26th June. Our Star Struck performers are dancing at the entertainment centre on 18th June and our boys and girls dance groups will perform at the Central Coast Dance Festival on the 23rd June and 29th June. Our debating team also has two debates and the field events carnival will take place at school on Wednesday 22nd June. It certainly will be a big finish to Term 2!

Student Reports
Student Reports will be forwarded home to parents on Thursday 23rd June. Students from Years 1 to 6 are assessed on a five point scale in all Key Learning Areas. The gradings are: limited, basic, sound, high and outstanding. A description of each grading will be on the front of the reports.
The majority of students will achieve a ‘sound’ grading.
A ‘sound’ grading indicates: The student has a sound knowledge and understanding of the main areas of content and has achieved an adequate level of competence in the processes and skills. Sound means they are achieving at grade level.
Teachers will be assessing and reporting on the work that has been programmed for Semester 1. The end of the year report will assess the work programmed in Semester 2, that is, the report will not be cumulative.
Students in Kindergarten have a different report which indicates their progress in meeting the outcomes of the kindergarten syllabus.

Mr Thomas’ Wall of Fame
A big thank you to Chloe in 4/5M for the landscape artwork that now sits proudly on my wall of fame. Holly in 5/6W is also an addition to my wall of fame this week, with her amazing piece of pop art inspired by Andy Warhol. Malibu in 5/6W worked hard to produce a very bright elephant artwork, which also now sits proudly on my wall of fame.

Hi! My name is Peta Mumford and I am fortunate enough this year to be teaching the wonderful 2M three days a
week. They are a fun and vibrant class and each day is different and exciting; one of the main reasons I decided a
career in education was for me.
A little about myself… I grew up in Epping, in the northern suburbs of Sydney in a
wonderful home. My mum was a primary school teacher and my dad a police prosecu-
tor. They both worked long hard hours; yet their time at home was entirely dedicated
to my older brother, Jamie and I.
I attended the local primary school where I was given many exciting learning and
extra-curricular opportunities. I developed an early love of swimming whilst trying my
hand at cross country, netball, tennis, triathlon, dance, drama, choir and recorder (yes,
it’s hard to believe but it’s true!) We were offered so many opportunities by the teachers who dedicated a lot of extra time to running training
sessions and practices.
I attended a high school in Burwood in the Inner West of Sydney which offered fantastic academic and sports programs. Swimming quickly
became a big part of my life and before I knew it, mornings and afternoons were being occupied by training sessions. This combined with
rowing, athletics, netball, water polo, basketball and Duke of Edinburgh training left little time for much else but it was always emphasised by
my parents that school, assignments and study came first. I fondly recall my mum being at all my training sessions and she would sit for hours
on end, preparing her lessons for the following days.
After finishing high school I attended the University of Technology, Sydney and completed a Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Arts in
International Studies. I thoroughly enjoyed University and made lifelong friends from studying there. I worked casually as a swimming instructor
at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre and this further cemented my love of teaching. During my time at University, I learnt to speak Italian as
part of my Arts degree, this also meant that I had the opportunity to live in Italy for a year. It was a wonderful experience as a 21 year old, living
and studying in another country and gave me some very valuable life experiences.
After returning from Italy, I completed the final part of my teaching degree and then began casually teaching at Auburn Public School. My mum
was a teacher there and this made the daunting task of being a beginning teacher a little easier. Initially I worked as an ESL Support Teacher and
then was given a temporary contract teaching Year 2. This was a challenging and vivacious school, a school that is 96% NESB (Non English
Speaking Background) and upwards of 20 different cultures all learning together. I will always be grateful for my time at Auburn.
At the end of 2008, I applied for and was successful at interview in gaining a permanent teaching position at Newington Public School. This was
a beautiful school, initially built just before the Sydney 2000 Olympics, it was the medical centre during the Olympics and was transformed into
a school in 2002. A highly multicultural school with outstanding teachers and results. I got married during my time at Newington and my
husband Calum and I bought our first home; a tiny apartment in the Inner West of Sydney.
In 2012, Calum and I decided that we wanted a bigger house, we wanted to plan for the future and we
wanted a dog! We decided the Central Coast was where we wanted to settle, Calum’s family emigrated
here from England in 2002, so it was an easy decision! We bought a beautiful house in Avoca Beach and
were resigned to the fact that we would be commuting to Sydney for our jobs. It was a great surprise
when a job came up at Copacabana at the end of 2012 and I applied and successfully interviewed for the
job.
I remember my first day at Copacabana in 2013 very fondly, the staff and teachers were so warm and welcoming and I
quickly felt like part of the community, even though it took a little while for the students to learn my name – Mrs.
Muffin does have a nice ring to it! A true highlight in recent years was the birth of our daughter Frankie in July 2014, she
is a cheeky and inquisitive toddler who definitely keeps me on my toes! She is best friends with Maggie, our mischievous
and energetic Border Collie.
I am truly grateful each day for the opportunity to teach at such a wonderful school, Copa is a brilliant school and that is
because the students and community are so great. I became a teacher because I admired my mum so much, and I saw the difference she made
to many students’ lives. Each day I aim to make a little difference - an understanding smile, a willing ear to listen and constantly wanting to
nurture the curious minds of Copa children.

VALUE of the Month - RESPONSIBILTY
During the month of May we explored the value of RESPONSIBILITY. Being responsible
is taking care of what you need to do and being accountable for your actions. It is also
being trustworthy.
Thank you to all who try and be responsible individuals every day both at school and at home. Our citizens
of the month for May who were recognised at last Friday’s assembly for demonstrating the value of
responsibility consistently were…
This month, during June,
we discuss what it means
to be COOPERATIVE.

Yr 3 Claymation workshops
As part of their Technology Programme, students from Year 3 took part in an exciting Claymation Workshop last week and produced some really entertaining animations.
They had to prepare their storyboard, scripts and backdrops prior to the day so they were all ready to build their characters and start filming when Matt arrived with all the equipment.
The classes spent their day learning all about animation, cameras, creating characters from plasticine, 3D and perspective and were lucky enough to have portable surface pro laptops to use.
They had a fantastic day and have thoroughly enjoyed watching each other’s movies.
You will find a couple of them featured on the Copacabana Website http://www.copacabana-ps.com/ and more examples on the Technology blog page http://www.copacabana-ps.com/technology-blog

Project Green Sea Turtle
On Wednesday 8/06/2016, four members of the environment group Sienna, Maddy, Mika & Asha presented their environment project at the take 3 for the sea program at Ourimbah University.
We enjoyed listening to other schools presentations and even got to show a presentation of our own about making a difference in our school and community.
Bruce showed us an indigenous dance about the turtles from his home land Frazer Island, it raised awareness for these beautiful creatures in our oceans.
Remember Take 3 for the Sea.
