Dear parents,

Welcome back to Term 3. We are looking forward to another productive term with lots of opportunities for our students to experience a range of activities. Attendance

Last term I put a poster in the newsletter, which highlighted the importance of attendance and punctuality at school. In Semester 1, there were only 5 students who did not have one day off or one partial absence. Ruby P, Cooper, Ruby M, Charles and Sophie were rewarded in the last week of term with “lunch with the Principal”. We had a lovely pizza picnic! This term we will focus on uniform. To reward those students who always wear full school uniform, we will be doing a weekly draw for a canteen voucher.

Student Teachers

This term we welcome 3 student teachers from the University of Newcastle. They will be working in classrooms for 10 weeks to complete their final internship before becoming fully qualified teachers. Miss Anderson will be working with 3W, Miss Green with 2D and Mr Goard will be with 2M. Mrs Braund is also finishing her internship with 5/6W over the next 3 weeks. We welcome these student teachers to our school and look forward to supporting them to become the best teachers they can be.

It’s a Girl!!

Mrs Lucas is very proud to announce the birth of her beautiful baby daughter. Natalia Lucas was born on 15th July at 11.20pm. She weighed in at 7 pounds 4 ounces. Mum and bub are doing very well. All happy and healthy

Gabe Smith

A separate note was sent home this week explaining the fight that our amazing Yr 5 student, Gabe, is battling against a cancerous tumour. It has been overwhelming, the support that our community has already given to Gabe and his family. As mentioned in the letter, we are attempting to centralise our fundraising efforts and as such a family friend, Esther Davidson, has taken on the role of coordinating what we are doing for Gabe and the family. She has set up a Go Fund Me page, which can be accessed at the following link- https://gofundme.com/2cf7y23k

If people are wanting to support Gabe, this page is the best way to do that at this point in time. Other than that, we will all be sending our best wishes and warmest thoughts to Gabe and his family during this challenging time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and we wish Gabe a speedy recovery.

Term 3 Uniform Awards

This term we are having a focus on wearing school uniform and showing pride in our school. Each week we will draw names out of a hat and if that student is in full school uniform, they will receive a canteen voucher. Congratulations to Kai in K/1S, who won our first ever canteen voucher on Tuesday, for being in full school uniform.

Cross Country

Well done to Copa students Liam, Dylan, Cleo, Chloe, Maya and Paris-Lily who represented the Southern Central Coast Zone at the Sydney North Carnival at Gosford last term. All the students gave their best effort and achieved some great results. A big congratulations goes to Liam who came 5th overall in his age group and has quali-fied for the NSW PSSA Cross Country at Eastern Creek on Friday 22nd July. Good luck Liam!

School Sport

Congratulations to the Girls Basketball team who were undefeated at the PSSA knockout gala day at Gosford Basketball Stadium last term. The girls played extremely well as a team, always showing the Copa spirit. Thank you to all the parents who drove and came to support. The girls have now moved onto Round 5 (Southern Central Coast fi-nal), which will be played early this term. Well done team!!

Mr Chris Mensforth

The way people communi-

cate via social networking is ever increasing and is part of our daily lives now, but it can be a real issue in schools. Sites like Facebook and Instagram are the most popular but it is important to note that users must not be under the age of 13 years! Unfortunately, cyber bullying has been an increasing issue in our society and it is something that our school wants to address early on, to ensure that it doesn’t happen to our students and if it does, that our students are aware of how to deal with cyber bullying. Bullying in any way, shape or form is unacceptable and will not be tolerated at Copacabana PS. The best advice for students who are attacked on social media sites is: 1. Don’t respond! 2. Tell someone and report the incident. Save

or screenshot the content as evidence. 3. Block the person being inappropriate.

Weekly Fortnightly Monthly

We are up and running!!! There were lots of very excited children queued up across the COLA on Wednesday. Seeing all the smiling faces made all the hard work worth it.

We had such a wonderful response to the “Name the Canteen” competition. The children really put a lot of effort in and came up with some great ideas. Congratulations to Jasmine Wenzke, for the

winning name SEASIDE SNACKS.

In the last few weeks we have managed to give the building a ‘new look’ inside and out. We would like to say a big thankyou to all the families who have donated their time and skills to make this possible.

A special thank you to Sile Molloy for designing the exterior mural and not to forget those who assisted with the painting of it. A great job!

We are developing our new menu in accordance with the NSW Government Healthy Canteen Strategy Fresh Tastes @ School Guidelines and we are offering a lot more Canteen made items and healthy

options. We will need some time to find our feet and see what works. Watch the School Newsletter/Facebook and the Canteen Specials boards for any menu changes and updates. Once we are up and

running we will be introducing online ordering!!

Our Canteen is P&C run and relies on Volunteers to keep it in operation. We are always looking for help, so please consider joining our volunteer team. Volunteers and ideas are always welcome!

Hi, I am Jocelyn Drennan and I teach 2D.

I grew up on the Central Coast attending a local primary school and high school. My childhood was filled with fond memories of playing lots of sport and going on family camping trips. My parents were very devoted to providing the best they could for my brothers and I. As I grew up, I always wanted to be a teacher. There are a few teachers in my family and they provided the inspiration and also made me aware of the amount of work that was required in teaching. The first few years of my teaching career were spent working casually and on temporary blocks at Avoca Beach Public School. At the end of 2007, I was successful at interview and received a permanent job at Mosman Public School. This meant it was time to leave the Central Coast and start commuting. We considered moving to Sydney but it wasn’t where we wanted to live. I started at Mosman in 2008 and it was a fantastic school with great children, parents and teachers. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there and learnt a lot. After 3 years, I decided that it was time to return to the Central Coast. I still remember the day, when my principal at Mosman came to my classroom and told me that I had successfully received a transfer and to Copacabana Public School. I couldn’t believe it. Not only was the commute about to end but I was lucky enough to get a job in the community where I live. My trip to work is very different now. It only takes 5 minutes and I can walk and enjoy the fresh air. In 2011, I started working at Copacabana. The last 5 years have been awesome. I have taught a range of children across stage 1, 2 and 3. Each day is different and constantly there are new challenges. It is a very rewarding job when you see the growth in children and the smiles on their face when they understand a new concept or have enjoyed an activity that they have completed. During my time here at Copacabana, my family has also grown. We have welcomed two boys and a dog into our lives. Our boys are now 2 and nearly 5. I try to provide an innovative classroom where the children feel welcomed and confident in attempting new things. This year I have changed the design of my classroom and have created a 21st century learning space which is engaging for all children. Within the room, I have opportunities for the children to work collaboratively, student to teacher and individually. I recognise the important role of parents and the wider community in our school and I enjoy having parents assist within my room on a daily basis.

A message from Busways

Please help us supply appropriate bus services by reminding students to tap on and tap off with their School Opal cards.

One of the more significant changes created by the recent introduction of the School Opal card is the need for students to tap on and off when they travel to and from school.

Opal data gathered by tapping on and off is used to determine demand for bus services. If students don’t tap on and tap off, services may be cancelled due the lack of recorded patronage.

With this in mind, we ask for your assistance in reminding your students that tapping on and off at the beginning and end of each trip is one of the conditions of using a School Opal card.

Your assistance helps us ensure we are able to provide the appropriate level of service to your students.
