LETTER TO THE EDITOR

I want to thank you for supporting me as a Town Councilmember over the past 6 years and give you some information about me so you will consider reelecting me to the Superior Town Council on August 30, 2016. I was born in Superior and have lived here all my life. My mother is 90 years old and still lives in Town. All three of my children attended and graduated from Superior schools. After graduation, my son served on the Superior Town Council and my daughter worked at Bank of the West. My wife was a Special Education teacher at the Superior Unified School District from 2003 to 2016. As you can see, we feel proud to be

This means that I hire employees who live in Superior, and support the local economy—both with the reinvestment of my income in the community as well as that of my workers. During 2015, I employed 38 local employees and 3 from the Globe-Miami area. I understand the workings of the Town government and the needs residents have for jobs and services and believe that we should each lead by example. LETTER TO THE EDITOR

My name is Olga Lopez and I am running for re-election for the position of Town Council for the Town of Superior. My father, Paul Castaneda - known to many as “411” moved from Jerome, Arizona to Superior to work for Magma Copper Mining Company in 1950. He worked for Magma Copper for 36 years. I was 10 months old at the time, so you could say that I was raised and grew up in Superior. My late husband, Joey, also worked for what was then called Kennecott Copper Mine, which was bought out by ASARCO and is now owned by Groupo Mexico. He worked in the mining industry for 31 years.

My brothers and son were also employed by the local mines and one son still works for a local copper mine. I am well aware of how important the copper mining industry is, not only for the Town of Superior, but, also for the State of Arizona. A the same time, it is also important for the economy of Superior that we, as citizens, realize that there are vital attributes in Superior that need to and can be developed to further the growth of our own - Superior. For the word “superior” indicates being higher in rank or level. As citizens of Superior that is what we need to strive for. It takes all of us together to make this

happen and be successful at reaching our goals. I have been councilperson for 13 years. I am experienced, honest and trustworthy. The one thing I can share that I have learned is “in order to make progress and move forward you need patience and commitment and a plan.” Things don’t change overnight, but if it is important enough you don’t give up. We need to be optimistic and not to look at a glass half empty, but, instead, half full. Remember to go out and “VOTE” on Tuesday, August 30, 2016. /s/ Olga Lopez

John Paul Perez, a lifelong resident of Superior and a 20-year veteran of the Superior Fire Department, has been hired as the town’s Fire Chief. He succeeds Todd Pryor, who moved up to Superior Town Manager last April. Perez was officially hired by the Superior Town Council following an executive session held during the Aug. 11 Council meeting. He was selected from among several applicants for the Fire Chief position. Under terms of his hiring, Perez will work as Fire Chief 16 hours a week, thus allowing

him to continue in his second job at Empire Machinery in Mesa. His salary is tied to the hours worked. On being hired, Perez was praised by Council members for his previous work with the Superior Fire Department, where he rose to the position of Fire Captain. On accepting the position, Perez promised to do his best to serve the town where he has lived his entire life. Prior to being hired by the Superior Fire Department in 1996, Perez received his training as a firefighter at Central Arizona College. In other business at the August Council meeting, a motion by Councilman John Tameron to return to two scheduled Council

meeting per month failed when the other four council members present failed to make a motion for further consideration. Tameron argued that going back to holding meetings on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month would allow the Council to resolve public and governmental issues in a timelier manner. Currently if a problem is brought up at one Council meeting, one has to wait a month for it to be acted upon and resolved, he noted. Tameron added that doubling the number of Council meetings would cost Superior only $3,600 more annually. But Councilman Michael Alonzo objected, noting that Superior went to one Council meeting per month so that the Council could fit in more work sessions where town problems and other issues are actually debated and solutions drafted. Emergency Council sessions can always be called for pressing issues, he added. Councilman Stephen Estatico agreed with Alonzo, adding that it was hard enough getting all seven Council members to one meeting a month. The motion died for lack of being brought to a vote. Later during the public comment period at the end of the meeting, Henry Munoz, who served on the Superior Town Council in 1989-99, scolded Council members, saying the with two meetings a month, citizens become better informed while town issues are solved quicker. “You create a more open environment for debate and problem solving,” Munoz said,

adding that the towns of Globe and Miami still have two council meetings each month. Earlier in the meeting, Council members unanimously voted to confirm that property tax levy in Superior for the upcoming fiscal year will remain the same as it was in the current year. This was a formality as the town budget was approved at the July meeting. The current levy is expected to be sufficient to raise $579,015 by June 30, 2017. Legal Shield Associate Bernie Pagethe sales revenue increases for the representatives above them. Bernie and Geri learned about Legal Shield after a friend invited them to a presentation. They signed up for the services and then decided to become sales representatives. “Everyone is entitled to equal justice. Legal Shield is a way to ensure that you can afford the services of an attorney if you need one,” explained Bernie. Legal Shield has monthly packages for all budgets including business legal services and identity theft protection. He explained that he’s received phone calls from their customers telling him stories about how the letters written by the contracted attorneys have helped them save money. In one instance one customer was being charged for car

repairs that she did not authorize; once the company received communication from an attorney, they immediately tried to rectify the situation. “My customer was pleased with the service and support she received from her Legal Shield attorney,” he said. You can learn more about the services available through Legal Shield on Bernie’s and Geri’s website: http://bit.ly/BerniePage. For those interested in starting a Legal Shield business the start up cost is $99 and the monthly website fee is $20 per month. Bernie can be reached via telephone at 480-776-9891. Bernie’s advice for those considering a multi level marketing business. “Research the company, make sure it is a good company. Most importantly,

make sure the business is something you can be passionate about,” he said.

The United Way of Pinal County has been serving the county for 35 years. They have helped local employers create

ways for their employees to give charitably to organizations that serve the people of Pinal County. Those funds have went to help food banks and senior centers. Funds have been allocated to organizations like the Boys’s and Girls Clubs, Against Abuse and CHARA. All of these organizations have a county wide footprint, and the United Way funds are only a small part of their overall budget, but without the support of the United Way and funds raised

by employees in the county, many people would not be able to receive needed services. United Way Executive Director Mannie Bowler explained that more focus is being placed on how to prevent the need versus just serving the need. “It isn’t about the quantity of people we serve, did we solve the problem,” she explained. This is a new a shift in focus for all of the United Way organizations. She explained that the United Way sponsored a life skills program at one of the school districts and eventually the school just adopted the program. “Those

life skills will hopefully help empower these children to make smart life choices.” Bowler explained that there must be an investment in youth. “They need more than a safe home. They need access to health care and education.” Overall Pinal County has a high school graduation rate of 71% county wide, this is cause for great concern for the United Way and county leaders. If they are not able to graduate from high school, it will be difficult for these young adults to find work. It also poses a larger problem for the Economic Development leaders, they cant attract businesses and

United Way of Pinal County

corporations to the area if there is not a work force. The United Way is hoping to increase their outreach to provide more services from “cradle to career,” explained Bowler. Continued on page 16

Department was tabled by the Council pending additional work. Also tabled by the Council was a motion to seek a grant from Firehouse Subs to upgrade the Superior Fire Department. The Fire Truck Restoration Committee asked for more time to redraft its grant request to first seek grant money for updating the equipment used by firefighters on the job while postponing to the second year grant money to replace one of Superior’s fire engines.

In Superior, the United Way of Pinal County specifically has supported the Superior Food Bank and the Superior Senior Center. County wide organizations like Against Abuse and CHARA have also utilized United Way funds to assist residents of Superior. “If everyone gave either five dollars or five hours a month, it would make a huge difference in our communities,” she said.

That may seem like such a small number but according to volunteer and service calculators five dollars a month for a year will equal 20 senior citizen meals. Five hours a month is worth at least $140 in a cash value for work completed based on the national average of the value of a volunteer hour. Bowler’s advice: “Get involved and give those five hours or five dollars. They make a huge difference” she explained.

District. I was involved in the installation of the sewer plant as well as the groundwork to connect the houses to the plant. Today I am involved in the decision-making to upgrade the plant for current needs as well as future development. This reflects several decades of infrastructure needs in which I have been instrumental. I was also a volunteer firefighter for 25 years, (18 years as a Captain, EMT and Medic). I remember many times when the Volunteer Fire Department was called upon to save friends/ relatives lives and homes. There is nothing that binds communities together more than working toward a common purpose. It was and is a great feeling to be able to serve my community then and now. I own rental properties and pay my residential rental tax every

month. While some landlords do not want to participate in this important program, I am happy to report and pay the tax to supplement the Town’s budget. It is important to listen to the needs and wants of those in our community and try to bring information forward to the various Town Managers, Department Heads and the Council. I think that I have been able to accomplish this over my tenure with the Town Council. Of course, I am only a single voice and good government relies on a fair and balanced decision-making body. If I am reelected, I will continue to make the best decisions possible and always do my best for the community. Thank you for your consideration. Your vote counts—either by early ballot or in person on August 30!/s/ John A. Tameron
