LETTER TO THE EDITOR

I hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday Season! We are looking forward to an exciting and productive 2018. We are in the process of creating our 2018/2019 academic calendar and academic schedule. Research states the number one factor for high student achievement is the quality of instruction in the classroom. There is a research-based blueprint used by successful schools that enhances teacher instruction and student achievement. It revolves around researched-based professional training, teacher collaboration, test data review to support

School piloting new ‘late start’ day next yearinstruction, and teacher planning. We want to use this same blueprint to pilot a new school schedule next year. Every Wednesday would be a “Late Start” day. This means school would begin for all students in grades Kindergarten through 12th grade at 9:30 each Wednesday. The District would continue to provide breakfast each Wednesday but at later time. Our school buses will also run at a later time in the morning on Wednesday as well. All school end times will remain the same. We are living in a time where school monies are tied to test scores. Although, test scores don’t define who we are as a District or as a Community, the reality is that we need to improve our systems and programs regardless of any label we receive from the

State. We understand our Superior families may have problems with the “Late Start” Day. We are willing to work to resolve any issues that may arise out of our proposed 2018/2019 pilot schedule. There will be a public hearing on February 7th, 2018 from 5:30-6:00. Anyone wishing to voice an opinion to our proposed pilot schedule may do so at this time. You can also email me at [email protected] or simply call the Superior Unified School District Office at 520-689-3000. Sincerely,/s/ Steve EstaticoSUSD Superintendent

We used to sing a chorus: “get all excited and go tell everybody that Jesus Christ is King!” Yet,

we don’t get excited about church. It has become rather average and at times tends toward boring. The most important choice you have ever made is the decision to be sorry for a life of sin and accept a life of grace and love from Jesus Christ. It’s called – salvation, and results in having an eternal home in heaven. We should naturally be excited about anything that important. In fact, that ex-citement should cause us to want others to know Jesus as well. But, usually we are so quiet about God things that even our best friends may not know we believe in God. Let’s turn this around. Just ask God, who He would like you to talk to about your

Getting Excited for God

love for Jesus. Then – do it! Soon, all your friends will also be as excited as you are!

Following an extensive review of the southwestern willow flycatcher’s status, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has confirmed the subspecies is a valid, unique taxon, and therefore it will remain pro-tected under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The Service was prompted to reconsider this migratory songbird’s endangered status when petitioned by industry groups to delist the subspecies in 2015. The peti-tion presented information challenging the subspecies’ classification and argued that the southwestern willow flycatcher is not a valid subspecies listable under the ESA. In addition the petition asserted the south-western willow flycatcher was no longer subject to a variety of threats identified

when the Service listed the subspecies. An exhaustive review of the best avail-able scientific information from the U.S. Geological Survey, species experts, state and federal agencies, taxonomic organi-zations, and the Service’s Conservation Genetics Program’s critical review, led to the conclusion that the southwestern wil-low flycatcher is a subspecies protectable under the ESA. Additionally, current threats and the sta-tus of the southwestern willow flycatcher were evaluated. The Service’s finding confirms that although some populations have made considerable progress toward recovery, the subspecies and its ripar-ian habitat are experiencing substantial threats; the southwestern willow flycatcher

Southwestern Willow Flycatcher to retain Endangered Species Act protectionstill warrants protection as an endangered species. The 5¾-inch flycatcher breeds and rears its chicks in late spring and through the summer in dense vegetation along streams, rivers, wetlands, and reservoirs in the arid Southwest. It migrates to Mexico, Central and possibly northern South America for the non-breeding season. The most recent flycatcher range-wide assess-ment (2012) estimated a population of only 1,629 breeding territories – locations

where a male sings to attract a mate. Today’s finding, including the full status assessment, is available at: https://www.fws.gov/southwest/es/arizona/Editor’s Note: Following the floods of 1993, the Town of Kearny encountered difficulty in rebuilding the Kearny Lake due to the Southwestern Willow Fly-catcher’s presence along the Gila River wetlands. The lake was destroyed during the flooding and later had to be relocated to its current location.

Eleven years ago, Rosemary Quiroz opened Rose’s Roses Flowers, Gifts and Printing. She had started out working from her home designing and printing

custom announcements and invitations. Her cottage business was starting to “take over her house”, she explained. Lupita Ybarra was selling her flower and gift shop which was located on Main St. next to the Senior Center. Rose, decided to expand her business and purchased the flower and gift shop business from Lupita. Rose’s Roses has been a fixture on Main Street for many years, operating in several locations until just two years ago Rose and her husband Argel purchased the “Copper Gecko & Gecko Decko” from the late Sonny Samson and Leslie Martin. “They wanted to sell the property to someone local, they have been the kindest and most supportive people,” Rose explained. Expanding her business to include consignment and booth rentals in the store has allowed new variety to come into her business. From one of a kind re-purposed furniture from the “Quirky Quail”, high end costume and stamped sterling silver jewelry, custom metal decor by “Ramirez Metal Design”, local artist Laura Lira has one of a kind Copper jewelry designs and custom lamps. These are just a few of the vendors in the store there are many other unique vendors and gifts that fill the store. You can also order flowers for any occasion, birthdays, holidays, just because, sympathy and wedding flowers can all be custom designed and ordered with Rose. Rose credits her floral designing techniques to Armando Gonzales who taught her many of his skills. “He would come and visit me when he was at the Senior Center, I still use many of the tricks he taught me today” she said. Rose can also provide event planning services. She can help with funeral coordination for those having memorials without the a mortuary or help to support plans made through the funeral homes. Expanding her business into the Copper Gecko, included the addition of a deck for public and private events along with a short term stay apartment. The Gecko Decko is available for rent for private parties and can be rented with full decorating and party planning services or you can rent and provide the decorations and customize your party as you wish. The deck can accommodate up to eighty five guests.

The one bedroom apartment located in the back of the store features a private driveway in the rear of the store, full bathroom and kitchen. The apartment can be rented for a minimum of one night and a maximum of six nights. To rent the apartment, contact Rose directly. Rose credits the success of her business to the support of her family and her faith. “I prayed a lot before I made the big move. When I talked to my dad, he said ‘go for it,’” she said. Her husband Argel and her children are always by her side, from maintenance on the building to helping with the events and big floral orders her family is always there for her. Her business advice to fellow entrepreneurs and future business owners? “Follow your heart, have faith and pray that combined with a solid plan will help your though the good times and tough times,” she said. To order flowers, rent the apartment or set up a party planning session you can visit Rose at the store located at 203 Main St. or you can call the store at 520-689-2400.
