Social networking has been around a long time on the internet. However, most of the time it was never refered to as "social networking", or "social software". Examples of popular social software that existed before social networking became a buzz word are: IRC (Internet Relay Chat), Instant Messaging (the friends list), Forums (against the friends list), Blogs (backlinks and organic linking between friends), Webrings (in essence social software), Napster (Peer to Peer software), Groove (shared browsing and collaberation), NeoPets, and too many others to list here.

Though these products helped in a specific domain but did not solve the complex problem of replicating an Offline Social Network online partially or completely.

Then came the friendster, the first social networking product weaved around replicating communities online.

History


Introduction of Web 2.0 changed the face of the web and brought a revolution in Social Networking Products. With new standards and sharing concepts Social Networking grew to new heights.

Recently with the advent of new companies like Orkut, MySpace, FaceBook - social networking has become a widely recognized phenomenon and has spiraled outward manifesting itself in previously unimagined (or undefined) places. Big companies like Amazon.com, Google, ICQ, are acquiring companies or coming up with their own Social networking products. Tech companies like Micrsoft, IBM etc are developing platforms to create social network and going to offer them as solutions for various B2B, B2C customers. Social Networking is the first boom in new millennium after the DotCom in last century.

Our Role:Mastiff is Technology Partner of triber.com. We have played a key role from consulting to developing the product from its inception to the Beta Version of the product after which triber.com has secured Series A funding for triber.com.


Company Overview:A social networking site for sports enthusiasts. Sportsvite combines sports-specific targeted search and member profiles with invitation and game management tools. Members can also keep track of stats and future games, send out email invitations, and maintain their schedule for their teams in leagues or casual pick-up games. Sportsvite is a free service. Sportsvite was released in beta version in the spring of 2006. Sportsvite has over 20,000 active members. The most popular regions for Sportsvite members are New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Boston, San Diego, Austin and Denver. The most popular sports are Soccer, Softball, Basketball, Football, Volleyball and Tennis. Sportsvite raised its first round of capital that was reported to be up to $2 million in February, 2007.
