What IS Assistive Technology?

§300.5 Assistive technology device.Assistive technology device means any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a child with a disability. The term does not include a medical device that is surgically implanted, or the replacement of such device.

The DSM-IV criteria for AS specifies that the individual must have "severe and sustained impairment in

•social interaction, •the development of restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, •interests and activities that must cause clinically significant impairment in social, occupational or other important areas of functioning."

Asperger Syndrome (AS)

Unlike the severe withdrawal from the rest of the world that is characteristic of autism, children with Asperger syndrome are isolated because of their poor social skills and narrow interests.

• What limitations does the individual with Asperger Syndrome experience?

• How do these limitations affect the individual’s job/college performance?

• What specific job/educational tasks are problematic as a result of these limitations?

• What accommodations are available to reduce or eliminate these problems? • Can the individual with Asperger Syndrome provide information on possible

accommodation solutions?

• Once accommodations/technology are in place, would it be useful to meet with the individual to evaluate the effectiveness of the accommodations and to determine whether additional/different accommodations are needed?
