Introduction to Magellan/SPACE MOUSE

Magellan/SPACE MOUSE is a 3D input devicethat is used to control the position andorientation of 3D graphical objects in virtualspace. The device controls three translationaldegrees of freedom (X, Y and Z) and threerotational degrees of freedom (A, B and C).

How Magellan/SPACE MOUSE ControlsSix Degrees of Freedom

Moving the onscreen object is as easy asmoving the Magellan/SPACE MOUSE cap. Shiftthe cap right or left to move the onscreenobject horizontally through space. Pull the capup or press it down to move the objectvertically through space. Pull the cap towardthe user or press it away to zoom in and out.Rotate the cap about the desired axis to rotatethe onscreen object.

Note that the values input by Magellan/SPACEMOUSE are not interpreted as absoluteposition commands but as velocity commands. When the cap is displaced translationally orrotationally by a constant amount (a distancemeasurement), the graphical object isassigned a continuous speed in the samedirection (a velocity measurement). Themagnitude of the cap's displacementdetermines the magnitude of the onscreenobject’s velocity.

Two Hands for Intuitive Control

Magellan/SPACE MOUSE allows forsimultaneous control of six degrees of freedomwith only one hand. When used in conjunctionwith a 3D CAD application, it takes over thefunctions of the viewing and supply hand (e.g.

for a right-handed person this is the left hand). The working hand (e.g. the right hand)operates the conventional 2D mouse. Thiscorresponds to the natural way of workingwith real objects and therefore supportsintuitive creativity when generating andmanipulating 3D objects in a CAD application.

How to Optimally Handle Magellan/SPACE MOUSE

Spread three or four fingertips around the capand gently shift and twist it. Apply only lightfingertip pressure to the cap. DO NOT graspthe entire cap in your hand. It does not matterwhether the right or left hand is used. Noshoulder or wrist movement is necessary. The

ergonomic design allows the hand to rest onthe device without fatigue.

Magellan/SPACE MOUSE MeasurementSystem

The cap movements are measured inside thecap by a worldwide-patented, optoelectronicmeasuring system. The cap is suspended bysprings and always returns to its initialposition.

Displacement Range

The cap may be shifted up to ±1.5 mm in thetranslational directions. The cap may berotated up to ±4 degrees about the rotationalaxes.

1 Insert the CD-ROM into your CD-ROMdrive.

2 The installation program setup.batautomatically begins (if auto-start isactivated on your CD-ROM drive).Continue with this installation programonly if Run setup.bat is listed for yourapplication. (If Run setup.bat is not listedfor your application, you should cancelthe installation and follow the instructionsgiven for your application. SeeApplication List & Driver InstallationInstructions.)

3 If your device uses a serial connection, select Serial Magellan/SPACE MOUSE. Ifyour device uses a USB connection, select USB devices.

4 Follow the instructions onscreen. Makesure the destination folder is the one towhich you want the driver to be copied.

5 Select the applications with which youwish to use the Magellan/SPACE MOUSE.

6 If you select Start the driver now, theMagellan/SPACE MOUSE should respondwith two beeps indicating that it isreceiving power and working properly. The driver icon appears at the lower-rightcorner of the Windows Taskbar.

7 Select Start the 3D Cube Demo topractice using the Magellan/SPACEMOUSE.

Startup Tips

In order to use the Magellan/SPACE MOUSE,you must start the driver (BEFORE startingyour CAD application) each time you log on tothe system. Alternatively, you can put thedriver in the Startup folder, so that it startsautomatically every time you log on. TheMagellan/SPACE MOUSE driver icon will appearin the Taskbar if the driver has been initializedsuccessfully.

Using Additional Applications

To install additional drivers for otherapplications, follow the instructions in theReadme files, which are located on the CD-ROM in subdirectories under the names of theappropriate applications.

Magellan/SPACE MOUSE Keyboard

The keyboard of the Magellan/SPACE MOUSEoperates on two levels: the so-called"standard" or top-level keyboard and thesecond-level keyboard.

Standard Keyboard

Standard keyboard functions are executedsimply by pressing and releasing any one ofthe nine buttons of the Magellan/SPACEMOUSE Classic or the eleven buttons of theMagellan/SPACE MOUSE Plus and Plus XT. Thedefault function assigned to each button varieswith the application used. However, manycommon applications install the set of defaultfunctions listed below. Note that not allbuttons have default functions assigned. Notealso that the functions of the standardkeyboard may be customized by the user viathe Magellan/SPACE MOUSE driver. SeeKeyboard Mapping.

1 Translation ON/OFFTurns the translational degrees of freedom(inputs X, Y and Z) on or off. Turningtranslation off fixes the "screen position" ofthe onscreen object. The default is ON.

2 Rotation ON/OFFTurns the rotational degrees of freedom(inputs A, B and C) on or off. Turningrotation off fixes the orientation of theonscreen object. The default is ON.

3 Dominant Mode ON/OFFWhen dominant mode is on, only the inputof the greatest magnitude is registered,i.e. the onscreen object moves in only onedirection at a time. This can be atranslational or rotational direction.Dominant mode is especially helpful whenlearning how to use the Magellan/SPACEMOUSE. The default is OFF.

5 Gain DownDecreases the sensitivity of theMagellan/SPACE MOUSE. The samemovements of the cap will produce aslower movement of the object. Each timethe key is pressed, the sensitivitydecreases by one half.

6 Gain UpIncreases the sensitivity of theMagellan/SPACE MOUSE. The samemovements of the cap will produce afaster movement of the object. Each timethe key is pressed, the sensitivity doubles.

7 Gain DefaultReturns the Magellan/SPACE MOUSE backto the standard sensitivity.

Second-Level Keyboard

Functions of the second-level keyboard areexecuted by pressing button 1, 2, 3, 4 or 8 incombination with the star key. The keys mustbe pressed SIMULTANEOUSLY. Press and holdthe star button followed by the desirednumerical button. The second-level keyboardfunctions are predefined (i.e. are NOTapplication-dependent).

* 1 Translation ON/OFFSee description at left.

* 2 Rotation ON/OFFSee description at left.

* 3 Dominant Mode ON/OFFSee description at left.

* 4 ZeroingThe Magellan/SPACE MOUSE is zeroed atthe current position of the cap. Allsubsequent inputs are relative to thisposition.

Quicktip

A Quicktip is executed by pressing downwardon the cap with a quick tipping motion of yourfinger. The Quicktip function is an extra"virtual" button that may be programmed just

like the normal hardware buttons. The defaultfunction assigned to Quicktip opens and closesthe 3D Controller Panel. Note that for theMagellan/SPACE MOUSE Classic and Plus, thetranslation and rotation must be turned ONand the dominant mode turned OFF for theQuicktip function to work.

10

Magellan/SPACE MOUSE Driver

The Magellan/SPACE MOUSE driver can beused both to directly configure the hardwaresettings and to program the standardkeyboard.

3D Controller Panel

Double-click on the Magellan/SPACE MOUSEdriver icon in the Windows Taskbar to openthe main window of the driver. From here clickPanel to open the 3D Controller Panel window.Alternatively, simply right-click on theMagellan/SPACE MOUSE driver icon and selectPanel.

ButtonsAs an alternative to manually pressing thebuttons on the Magellan/SPACE MOUSE, thesesoftware buttons may be clicked with the 2Dmouse cursor to execute the default functionsassigned to the corresponding hardwarebuttons. (For Magellan/SPACE MOUSE Classic, the plus [+] and minus [-] buttons are presenton the software keyboard but have no effect.)

Use the ButtonBeep tickbox to toggle on andoff the "beep" sound made by the Magellan/SPACE MOUSE when hardware buttons arepressed. The Button Window tickbox opens asmall window that displays the key sequencemapped to hardware buttons whenever theyare pressed. For programming the buttons seeKeyboard Mapping.

3D ModesThe Translation button turns the translationaldegrees of freedom (inputs X, Y and Z) on andoff. Turning translation off fixes the "screenposition" of the onscreen object. The default isON. The Rotation button turns the rotationaldegrees of freedom (inputs A, B and C) on andoff. Turning rotation off fixes the orientation ofthe onscreen object. The default is ON. TheDominant button turns the dominant mode onand off. When dominant mode is on, only theinput of the greatest magnitude is registered,i.e. the onscreen object moves in only onedirection at a time. This can be a translationalor rotational direction. Dominant mode isespecially helpful when learning how to usethe Magellan/SPACE MOUSE. The default isOFF. Use the Changeable tickbox to fix andunfix the current translation, rotation anddominant mode settings. In some cases youmay wish to use the Use a horizontal screentickbox to swap the Y- and Z-inputs and the B-and C-inputs, e.g. when using the LCD displayof a laptop computer horizontally.

QuicktipUse the Quicktip software button to toggle theQuicktip function on and off. Untick theQuicktip tickbox to completely disable thefunction. Note that for the Magellan/SPACEMOUSE Classic and Plus models, thetranslation and rotation must be turned ONand dominant mode turned OFF for theQuicktip function to work.

Overall AbsorptionUse this slider bar to adjust the minimumdisplacement of the cap necessary to causemovement of the onscreen object. Increasingthe overall absorption may be helpful in workenvironments with vibrations (e.g. industrialenvironments), which may cause the Magellan/SPACE MOUSE to register unintentionalmovements.

11

Nonlinear SensitivityActivating the nonlinear sensitivity optionmakes the Magellan/SPACE MOUSEincreasingly sensitive as the cap is displacedfurther from the center. This function is usefulif you want to be able to execute both small, accurate movements of the onscreen object aswell as large, quick motions (such as zoomingin and out) without always needing to adjustthe overall sensitivity of the device. Tick thebox to activate the nonlinear sensitivity option, and use the slider bars to individually adjustthe settings for translation and rotation.

Translation SensitivityUse the slider bars to individually adjust thesensitivities of each translational degree offreedom. As an example, it may be useful tohave faster zoom response (Z-sensitivity) thanpan response (X- and Y-sensitivity). As thesensitivity is increased, the same movementsof the Magellan/SPACE MOUSE cap willgenerate quicker translations of the onscreenobject. Use the tickboxes next to theadjustment bars to toggle on and off theindividual degrees of freedom. Click DefaultSensitivity to reset all three slider bars to theirdefault settings. For some CAD applications itmay be necessary to tick the Change Y/Z Axistickbox, which swaps the Y- and Z-inputs.

Rotation SensitivityUse the slider bars to individually adjust thesensitivities of each rotational degree offreedom. As the sensitivity is increased, thesame movements of the Magellan/SPACEMOUSE cap will generate quicker rotations ofthe onscreen object. Use the tickboxes next tothe adjustment bars to toggle on and off theindividual degrees of freedom. Click DefaultSensitivity to reset all three slider bars to theirdefault settings.

Keyboard Mapping

From the main window of the driver, clickKeyboard to open the Keyboard Mappingwindow. This window is used to assign or"map" arbitrary key sequences to the buttonsof the Magellan/SPACE MOUSE. Click one ofthe twelve tabs to open a dialog box formapping a key or sequence of keys to thecorresponding button. (For Magellan/ SPACEMOUSE Classic, the plus [+] and minus [-]buttons are present in the Keyboard Mappingwindow but have no effect.) Any key sequencemay be entered, including special keys such asAlt, Shift, Control and F1. Once a new keysequence has been entered in the dialog box,

click OK to save the new settings. The newmapping becomes active once the changes aresaved and the window is closed. Enter a name(e.g. a user name, an application name, etc.)in the Name pull-down menu, then click Saveand Close. Click Delete to return to the Emptyconfiguration. Note that the driver installsdefault keyboard mappings for the followingapplications: I-DEAS Master Series (v.5) Mechanical Desktop (v.2.0 and 3.0) Pro/ENGINEER (v.18 and 20)

Connecting to the Serial Port

The Magellan/SPACE MOUSE is equipped witha 9-pin D-Sub female connector. The wiring ofthis connector matches any IBM-compatible PCwith a 9-pin serial connector. To use theMagellan/SPACE MOUSE with other computers, check the pin functions against the list shownbelow and verify whether the Magellan/SPACEMOUSE connector wiring matches your system.

Pin Meaning Connection toComputer

Case Shield Case2 TxD RxD3 RxD TxD4 Supply DTR5 GND GND7 CTS RTS8 RTS CTS

If not, you must use an appropriate adaptercable to connect the Magellan/SPACE MOUSEwiring to that of your computer. The use ofthe handshake signals (CTS, DTR and RTS) isabsolutely necessary for the safe operation ofthe Magellan/SPACE MOUSE. Without thesehandshake signals, loss of data will occur.Additionally, the signal lines (DTR and RTS)are used to supply power to the Magellan/SPACE MOUSE. Thus no external power supplyis required. The minimum output voltage hasto be 5 V, providing a output current of 9 mAon both signal lines.

Communication via the serial port using theXON/XOFF protocol is supported by theMagellan/SPACE MOUSE, but the handshakesignals (CTS, DTR and RTS) are needed forsafe operation. Thus the status of thehandshake signals has to be carefully checkedand treated by the computer. To activate theMagellan/SPACE MOUSE, these signals shouldhave a positive (active) level.
