They may look cute and cuddly, but bears are certainly not.

And residents planning atrip near Minnekhada Regional Parkhoping to catch a glimpse of thebruins that populate the area shouldthink twice, and stay away.

That’s the message from some ofthe blueberry farmers who live andwork near the park.

In fact, the area has become suchan attraction to the public, the City ofCoquitlam, Metro Vancouver and theblueberry farms have agreed to shutdown Oliver Road for the month ofAugust.

Sid Kwantes, owner and operatorof Gaskin Farms, said the issue is notparticularly new, but suggested peoplearen’t getting the message just howdangerous the situation can be.

He said the road was closed for thesafety of both bears and the public.

The road may be opened up oncethe berry-picking season is over.

“The public was actually standingon the road blocking them [bears], andthe farmers were there trying to scarethem out of their fields, and so thebears are caught between the farmerand the public and that’s not good,”Kwantes told The NOW, adding it willlikely be the bears that ultimately paythe price.

Though the road closure, which

started last week, has helped ease thesituation, even signs haven’t deterredsome residents from keeping out.

Kwantes noted some vandals havegone so far as to destroy warning signsin the area.

“I’m just really disappointed, we’vedone well to try and get along with thecommunity and the park and peopledon’t seem to get it,” he said.

“We’ve done nothing but try andhelp this issue along, and for peopleto dump on us and start vandalizingstuff, it just makes us more militant.”

And he warned the farms coulddecide to close access to both the road

and the dike permanently if the publicdoesn’t get the message.

Over the years, the number of bearsnear the park continues to grow.

Kwantes noted 20 years ago, thebears would only be spotted near theriver and none would be in the blue-berry patch.

He said this year is about as bad asany for bear sightings.

Kwantes acknowledged that theblueberries are attracting the animalsto the area, but suggested his farmhas security measures in place to keepthem out, and has taken necessarysteps to reduce the number of attract-

ants, like removing garbage cans atthe farm.

“We’re doing our part,” he said, but suggested the public and even themedia bear some of the responsibilityfor the problem.

“I personally don’t want to see anybears killed,” he added.

Though bruins have been a par-ticular problem near Minnekhada, thenumber of bear conflicts is actuallydown in the Tri-Cities compared tolast year.

Since April, there have been 397bear complaints in Coquitlam tothe province’s Conservation OfficerService hotline.

In Port Moody there have been 280bear complaints, with another 244 inPort Coquitlam.

Cody Ambrose, a conservation offi-cer, noted the number of calls is downfrom last year, but suggested conflictsare starting to pick up.

He explained the height of theseason tends to hit in September andthen again in November as the bearstry to fatten up before hibernation.

Ambrose noted conservation officersin the Tri-Cities are also hearing aboutan increase in the number of bobcatsightings.

So far, eight bears from the FraserValley region, which stretches fromPort Moody all the way to ManningPark past Hope, have been relocated, while another 13 have been destroyed.

In some cases, the bears were hit bycars and needed to be euthanized.

The first and only medicalpot dispensary in the Tri-Cities is essentially no more.

While the CoquitlamNatural Path Society stillhas a storefront shop inMaillardville, it does not haveany marijuana on site and willnot dispense the drug, accord-ing to the owner.

For now, the society willkeep the space open to beused as a resource of informa-tion for its clients.

The society’s founderand president, ChristopherMacLeod, said the withdrawalof services is a direct resultof a decision last month byCoquitlam city council to banunlicensed marijuana dispens-aries in the city.

“Once council says no, to

go against council at thispoint would be silly,” he toldThe NOW, adding the dispens-ary won’t be offering medica-tion until it can get an actuallicence.

In July, following a pub-

lic hearing, Coquitlam citycouncil voted unanimously toban unlicensed marijuana dis-pensaries in the city and passregulations on the location offederally licensed grow-ops.

MacLeod noted another

member of the society willoperate the space, but he’s notsure what will happen to theoffice in the long term.

The plans are to keep an e-mail address for the society incase someone needs a contact.

For MacLeod, it’s a dis-appointing end to what was ahopeful venture just a coupleof months ago.

He said the closure wouldlikely force him into bank-ruptcy and back to regularwork to help pay the bills.

MacLeod estimated hespent $10,000 getting the dis-pensary up and running.

However, he said it’s theclients he’s most disappointedfor, suggesting they’ll have totravel downtown Vancouverto get their medication — orturn to the streets.

“It’s going to hurt a lot ofpeople,” MacLeod said.

In its short existence, the

dispensary managed to signup 140 clients.

MacLeod did, however, hintat what he called a “plan B”for his dispensary, but did notgive any details.

The dispensary was openless than two months, but itcertainly courted plenty ofreaction and debate.

Neighbours in theMaillardville area came outin opposition to the loca-tion of the dispensary, whileCoquitlam RCMP made apoint of issuing a statementreminding the public therewas no legal mechanism forthe shop to operate.

Though council votedunanimously to ban the dis-pensary, the group voted towrite a letter asking the fed-eral government to establishthe regulatory framework forthe production and dispensingof medical marijuana.

June and July, and 3.4 percent for the year, while inPort Coquitlam the bench-mark of $561,600 turned outto be a slip of 0.6 per centbetween the two months.

But the benchmark pricestill rose by two per cent fromthe previous year.

The REBGV isn’t ready tocall July’s numbers a sign ofmajor long-term changes inthe market.

Wyant noted sales activityin the spring was quite good, and cautioned a better indica-tion of the market could comeafter August.

She said prices could startto come down as competitionamongst sellers heats up.

However, Wyant said itoften takes a while for sellersto make an adjustment in themarketplace.

“Right now it’s a fabuloustime to jump into the mar-ket,” she said, adding thereare many choices and no pres-sure to make a decision.

But one financial expertbelieves Lower Mainland realestate has reached a turningpoint.

Andrey Pavlov, a professorof finance with Simon FraserUniversity, noted prices inVancouver have rocketedpast those in places like NewYork and San Francisco, andin the case of the Tri-Cities,are comparable to suburbs ofthose major cities.

He suggested the pace willnot continue and predictsprices will likely drop in theVancouver area.

Pavlov argued home pricesrose dramatically in the LowerMainland, not out of incomeor general economic growth, but rather debt accumulation.

With low interest rates

and easy qualification terms, people have been taking onmore and more debt.

“I think this engine of realestate price growth is nowdone,” Pavlov told The NOW

in an e-mail.“So I don’t see where the

future support for real estatecan come from.”

And he’s especially con-cerned for the condo market.

He explained that single-family properties wouldalways hold their value tosome extent because usable

land in the Lower Mainland islimited.

But he contends condoshave absolutely nothing thatcan support them. And incases where the quality of anew development might be inquestion, he can see prices ofcondos in the suburbs drop-ping by half or more.

The benchmark price for anapartment in Coquitlam, PortMoody and Port Coquitlam forJuly was $252,000, $313,700and $222,200 respectively.

Though apartment pricesin Port Moody and Coquitlamboth increased in the lastyear, Port Coquitlam wasdown nearly five per cent.

ATVs battle booze at Buntzen

It appears sun worshipers are leavingthe booze behind when they head to thebeach at Buntzen Lake this summer.

Coquitlam Mounties are noting adrop in the number of alcohol-relatedincidents at the beach compared to yearspast.

Police are crediting the decline withthe increased presence of officers on foot, boat and ATVs in the area.

“We felt that the ATV presence mostdefinitely stymied any major alcohol-related incidents before they took place,”RCMP Const. Chris Nordlund, withCoquitlam RCMP’s rural section, said ina statement.

“The Coquitlam Mounties’ mainobjective for patrolling Buntzen Lake isto ensure a safe, family-oriented place foreveryone to enjoy.

“Alcohol and water recreation don’tmix, just as rowdy drunks and familiesdon’t mix.”

Police also credit the spectre of a $230fine for helping keep the rowdiness incheck.

That’s not to say everything is perfectat the beach.

Last weekend, an estimated 10,000people flocked to Buntzen Lake.

Over the long weekend, police wereinvolved in 90 liquor pour-outs, whileturning away several dozen people at thegate trying to bring booze into the park.

Another 26 people were ejected fromthe park for alcohol offences, and seven

liquor tickets were issued. One person was arrested for obstruc-

tion and breaching his conditional sen-tence order, while a well-known gangsterwas turned away from the park.

Police also helped out during a pair ofmedical emergencies.

In one of the situations, officers took aman by boat from a trail near the waterto the main beach, where they took himdirectly to the hospital, since area ambu-lances were busy at the time.

With the weather expected to warmup during the weekend, Mounties arereminding park goers to keep the boozeat home.

Earlier this summer, the RCMP had 93liquor pour-outs at the lake in just oneday.

Now that the weather is finally co-operating,it’s time to take a vacation. Or is it?

Many people think they are too busy to takea real vacation — one where the smartphone stays athome and work is truly turned off for days at a time.

The completely unsatisfying compromise hasbecome checking e-mails from thebeach. Relaxation is always a bit elusivewith the crackberry close at hand.

And who is truly productive half-working while the sun, sand, wavesand kids are calling? My seven-year-oldson recently commented that grown-ups should be banned from checkingBlackberrys on weekends. This came as a shock, asI consider myself pretty good at staying unpluggeduntil the kids go to bed.

My brother just sent me a funny article from theNew York Times. Writer Tim Kreider argues as asociety we have become obsessed with being busy. The ubiquitous answer to the obligatory “How areyou?” used to be “fine.”

Now the response is “busy,” with adjectives suchas “very,” “so” or “crazy” stuck in front of it foremphasis. The counter-response is an appreciative

nod or a validating “better than the alternative.”But is it always better to be busy? My best ideas

come to me when I’m half spaced out and a littlebored, like in the shower or after a week of doingnothing. I’m not alone.

“Idleness is not just a vacation, an indulgenceor a vice; it is as indispensable to thebrain as vitamin D is to the body, anddeprived of it we suffer a mental afflic-tion as disfiguring as rickets,” Kreidersays.

It is easy to agree with this sentimentin theory. In practice, however, it feelsa lot less possible to unplug and buck

societal norms. Letting colleagues and customersdown isn’t an appealing trade-off for quality down-time.

Leslie Perlow of Harvard Business School arguesthat if workplace teams tackle the issue together itcan be done — with big rewards for productivity andpersonal well-being.

Her new book, Sleeping With Your Smart Phone, details a process successfully implemented at theBoston Consulting Group where teams workedtogether to create predictable time off for co-work-

ers. The results are impressive:• Seventy-two per cent (versus 49 per cent who

did not take part in the predictable time off experi-ment) were satisfied with their job

• Fifty-four per cent (versus 38 per cent) weresatisfied with their work-life balance

• Ninety-five per cent (versus 84 per cent) werelikely to perceive they were providing more signifi-cant value to clients

Clients reported different experiences with person-al-time-off teams from neutral to extremely positive.

Boston Consulting’s CEO is now committed tomaking it part of the culture. Entrepreneurs willlikely be the toughest group to convince that a vaca-tion is possible. But they might just have the mostto gain.

Checking e-mail on vacation is not healthy

Re: “Smart meter at centre of investigation,”Wednesday, Aug. 8.

This smart meter situation is turning into a realmess. Are we surprised that the installation of a so-called “smart meter” can lead to a house fire?

The installation contract was awarded on a fixedcost base to a contractor. That contractor allowstheir installers only a predetermined amount oftime. So if the meter doesnot fit properly, the install-er will jam it in place, andmove on to the next instal-lation.

Such a sloppy installa-tion causes overheating inthe contacts, exacerbatedby the hot weather we have had lately. If at the sametime the circuit is loaded to capacity, the heating ofthe contacts will result in a fire. That is when BCHydro then blames it on an “overload.”

The baseplate and its contacts should be able tohandle several times the capacity of the followingcircuit, which is protected against overload by itsbreaker.

If the base can’t handle the rated load, there is aproblem. Blaming it then on a lack of maintenance

by the homeowner is going too far.In the years I have lived in my house, I have taken

care of all maintenance requirements, but to go intothe meter installation never crossed my mind. I con-sidered this a Hydro responsibility, since after all itis their meter, and should not be tampered with.

Therefore Hydro should be held fully responsiblefor its proper function, and for any damage resultingfrom problems arising out of sloppy installation.

Remember when the main reason to buy ahome was to live in it?

It seems like a quaint concept, after adecade of astronomical price gains that havemade paper millionaires out of many who, courtesy of luck, timed the market right.

But the tide is turning, and we appear tobe going back to the days when homes wereviewed mainly as shelter, rather than a retire-ment plan or an ATM machine.

Yes, many who bought houses or condoshave seen an enormous increase in the valueof their purchase, some of it due to inflationand the rest to a long bull market.

But many who bought near the top of therecent peak, especially those who put verylittle down, may find themselves owing morethan the value of their “asset.”

Real estate investing — while it has mademany rich — is not a sure thing. Like any asset, the value of homes goes up and down. Andit’s always better to buy low and sell high.

The main benefit of homeownership formany is that it’s a forced savings plan. Ifyou have the discipline to save on your own(which, admittedly, few of us do), you can doso while renting or owning.

In many parts of Europe, renting is seen asa viable choice, not something to be ashamedof. That view has recently taken over much ofthe U.S., after so many were burned by thehousing bubble there.

In Metro Vancouver, where we’ve beengripped by housing hysteria for years, manyview renting as losing and buying as winningthe lottery. We believe “It’s different here,”and “Everyone wants to live here.”

While we enjoy a spectacularly beautifulsetting, there are lots of other great placesto live, and many people who live elsewheredon’t want to move here.

The old “Best Place on Earth” slogan theBC Liberals used to tout must have gone toour heads, since many of us believe that whilereal estate markets in Spain, Ireland and othercountries decline, the same won’t happenhere. But it might.

If prices do slide, it will give those who havebeen shut out of owning a home a chanceto compete. And it will free up money forconsumer spending, which is what keeps oureconomy going.

Most of all, it will return us to the dayswhen a house is what it should be: a home.

A bike can put kidson the right path

“The children of today are ourfuture” is a common phrase intoday’s world.

Parents do their best to teachtheir kids wrong and right, teach-ers attempt to inform us and warnus of all the dangers found in theworld. However, for some reasona large number of teens seem toreactbetter tomediathantheirparents.

Thiswouldpotentially be a good thing if themedia did not showcase alcohol, drugs and violence as much asthey do. The unfortunate realityis that the media (magazines, TV,billboards, etc.) do showcase all ofthese negative artifacts to all audi-ences at no discretion.

It has been proved by more than20 studies that children exposedto cigarette commercials/ads aremore likely to become smokers. Inaddition, studies have shown thatyoung people see 72 per cent moreads for alcohol in teen magazinesthan adults do in their magazines.

This clearly means that teensare being targeted by negativesources on purpose. So what canwe do to prevent “the children ofour future” from becoming delin-quents?

Many people have differentanswers for this question, but Ibelieve there is one method thatstands out from the rest: sports.

To prevent kids from taking partin unhealthy practices it is import-ant to keep them occupied. Theproblem seems to be that not allkids are enthusiastic about sports, however the only reason for thatis because they haven’t found theright sport.

Personally I find any form ofbiking fun, whether it be road bik-ing, cross country biking, downhillbiking, or any other style of bikingthat you can think of. The reasonwhy biking is my favourite sport isthe same reason why it is rapidly

growing around the world: becauseit lets you express your individual-ity through actions.

I think this is the key to catch-ing a young audience’s attention, because each child is so individual-istic that they need an output fortheir endless creativity and energy.

Essentially, biking is so fun thatit gives you the drive to do well. This drive really helps with keep-ing youth and kids out of trouble.Depending on what “drives”(motivates) you to bike, the follow-ing actions, in result, will be verydifferent.

If you are into downhill racingit means training for races, whichinvolves cardio and lots of core

strength development. The sameapplies to any other bicycle racing. If you are just on your bike forfun you will want to push your-self to become better; this can beachieved through riding your bikeon a daily basis.

This same “drive” is key tokeeping youth away from negativeinfluences because encouragingand supporting them to do some-thing constructive is a lot moremeaningful and beneficial thanconstantly saying “no, no, no.”

In addition, all youth find bikingso fun that they don’t have time topartake in dumb activities such assmoking, drinking, etc. Whateverstyle of biking you prefer the drivewill come, and the results will fol-low.

Of course, I don’t expect youto go out and buy a brand newbicycle for your child, but I doexpect you to try and involve yourchild in an activity that they willenjoy and benefit from.

If you involve your child insomething that keeps them fromfalling for the negative influencesaround them, then you havealready made the future a betterplace.

If there is one thing I want youto take away from this, then it isthat your child needs your supportto succeed as a citizen, and as ahuman being. Give it to them.

For years, Colleen Prestonhas dedicated her life tothe health of her clients

as a personal trainer.The Tri-Cities resident has

worked non-stop, buildingher home-based business,Elevated Fitness in Coquitlam,into a suc-cess, all whilebeing a singlemom.

ThoughPrestonpreacheshealth andwellness toher clients, she admitsshe hasn’talways fol-lowed herown advice.

However,a near-death experience 18months ago changed all that.

For six months, Prestonthought she would never beable to work out again andsuffered from the effects of aterrible concussion.

She called it “six monthsof hell.”

But the incident alsobrought some perspective tothe workaholic.

And it led the businessowner to make a changein her life some could onlydream of doing.

“It really made me think,am I just acquiring things formy kids, other people?” sheasked.

“What am I doing for me?”So Preston and her fiancé

Christian Tiesters startedmaking major plans to leave itall behind for a while.

This month, the coupleembarked on a year-long trip

around parts of the world. To make the trip a reality,

the couple started getting ridof stuff — lots of stuff.

It was their cars, motor-cycles and toys.

At one point the pair ownedtwo businesses, two homesand 16 insured vehicles.

Preston estimated the twosold close to $250,000 worthof goods.

“The morestuff youhave, themore it ownsyou,” she toldThe NOW.

Prestonsees the purgeof goods as away of sim-plifying andcleaning herlife.

“It’s almostfreeing in away,” she said.

While relieved of theburden of some of her belong-ings for the trip, it doesn’tmean Preston will leave herbusiness far behind.

The intention is to turn thetrip into a fitness trek.

The couple plan to workout with the locals duringvarious stops along the way,and record their experiencefor a blog documenting howpeople keep fit in other coun-tries.

Preston has aptly titled thevideo series “Working Out theLocals.”

“We both love fitness— why don’t we backpack andexercise the whole way andtell people about it?” she said.

“Let’s just show everybodyyou can live on next to noth-ing, you can eat well and youcan be healthy.”

The trek begins with an RVtrip through Canada and the

East Coast of the U.S. for thefirst month.

The couple will park theirRV in Florida and backpackthe rest of the way throughthe Bahamas, Africa and partsof Europe, ending in France.

The couple also expects totie the knot on New Year’sEve.

While Preston is on herjourney, a group of trainerswill keep her business run-ning.

She also intends to do liveworkouts through Skypewhenever she can get thechance to stay in touch.

Preston believes she’llactually have more time to dopersonal training on the trip, since she won’t be burdenedby running the day-to-dayoperations of the business.

When the trek is completeand she returns home toregular life, the 46-year-oldintends to finally take theadvice she so often espousesto her clients.

Preston hopes to find bal-ance in her life and not returnto the old habits of working24/7.

“We need quality of life,”she said.

Garden

Match fertilizer to crops“Our veggie garden was a bust. Everything

grew huge, but we had no actual food exceptfor the kale. Not much under the earth in car-rots or radishes. Tomato stems are very bigbut not even one tomato is growing — thesame for peas and cukes. Did we plant toomuch in one eight-by-eight-foot planter?”

FionaVancouver

I wonder what fertilizer you used. It soundsas if your soil is overly rich innitrogen. Nitrogen creates hugestems and leaves but does nothingto help fruiting. Or perhaps youused a large quantity of manureor compost. It’s telling that yourkale did very well. Any other typeof cabbage or leafy crop would alsohave produced lots of food for you.

There’s always a built-in problemif you grow crops that need differ-ent soil conditions in the same bedbut fertilize all the soil the same way. Carrotsand radishes like a little nutrition, but rootswon’t form if the soil is super rich.

Fertilizers (organic and non-organic) havethree numbers on the packet. The first is nitro-gen, the second phosphorus and the third pot-ash. Phosphorus strengthens roots and helpsplants produce fruit and seeds. Potassium alsohelps fruiting and increases disease resistance.

Peas don’t do well in high-nitrogen situa-tions. But you should have had some podsshowing by now unless you planted them verylate. Shady situations and pollination problemscan also reduce pea crops.

Don’t give up on your tomatoes or cukes justyet. It was a wet, cold spring and everything’slate. Do you have flowers on your tomatoes?

Since you’ve just one veggie bed, it might

be best to plant it in three squarish blocks: onefor leafy plants, a second for root vegetablesand a third for anything that gives fruit (peas, tomatoes, cukes, etc.). This would also helpyou with crop rotation. I hope you like cab-bage, Fiona. Planting a bed of broccoli, headcabbage, lettuce or chard would help you useup all that nitrogen. So would anything elsewhere you eat the leaves, stems or both.

“I would like to build up a landscape box,add more soil and make a hostabed in the shade of my wisteria.Wisteria ‘whips’ grow all throughthe soil and I’m concerned thesewill leave no nutrients for the hos-tas. My plan is to place cardboardover the existing soil and build upthe box and soil ‘lasagne-gardenstyle.’ I am removing the wisteriawhips. Will this plan be OK for thehostas and the wisteria?”

Danavia e-mail

Once wisterias begin suckering they con-tinue every year — and the suckers will breakthrough the cardboard before long. So you willhave a yearly routine of peeking around yourhostas to cut back the wisteria suckers.

But wisterias and hostas like moist rich soilso the two types of plants will be very goodcompanions — and the wisteria suckers willkeep coming no matter what perennials youuse as companions. At least hostas look so dif-ferent from wisteria leaves it will be easy to tellthem apart. If you mulch yearly with compostor organic fertilizer, the hostas’ nutrimentneeds will be met.

The wisteria will get most of its nourish-ment much further afield.

Acura ZDX a sporty pick

When baby boomers nolonger need minivansand SUVs because

their kids have grown up andmoved away, what do theylook for? First, they needsomething new and different— something that tells othersthat they carve a unique spotin life despite “getting older.”Second, they want somethingpractical, just in case theyneed to haul some sportsequipment or want extraspace for carrying friends andfamily members. Finally, theywant something that does notcry “family-oriented.”

BMW has successfullylaunched such a product inthe form of the X6, and Acurahopes to capture the samekind of customers but witha much lower price point.Infiniti has done somethingsimilar with its FX series andothers are following in thosefootsteps.

Built on its MDX utilityplatform, Acura created asleek four-door coupe bodythat challenges traditionalthinking of what’s a coupe,a sports sedan or a utilityvehicle.

Being based on a utilityvehicle, the ZDX can easilyhandle the rough road trip tothe cottage or any “off-the-beaten-path” destination. Yetit also offers a sporty drivewhen unleashed on a pavedroad.

Powering the ZDX is aresponsive 300-horsepower,3.7-litre VTEC V6 enginethat’s mated to a six-speedautomatic transmission withpaddle shifters at the steeringwheel. Selecting the trans-mission’s “S” mode providesa more dynamic shift pattern, and double-shifts can be madewith the paddles.

The normal torque biasfor Acura’s Super HandlingAll-Wheel Drive system is tothe rear wheels, which givesit a sportier handling feel. Upto 90 per cent of torque caninstantly be transferred to thefront wheels when needed. Atorque-vectoring feature kicksin while cornering or accel-erating and can re-direct upto 100 per cent of axle torqueto either rear wheel, whichfurther enhances the ZDX’shandling dynamics.

Some changes have beenincorporated for 2012, suchas the Technology Package, which is now standard. Thisadds perforated Milano leatherupholstery, a navigation sys-tem with voice recognition,eight-inch LED colour display,rear-view camera, headlampwashers, 10-speaker audiosystem, dual-zone climatecontrol, Bluetooth hands-freephone service and keylessaccess plus push-button igni-tion.

StylingThe unique styling of the

ZDX was created by Acura’sDesign Studio in Californiaand based on original sketchesby Michelle Christensen.

The coupe-like appearanceof the ZDX is pulled off byenlarging the front doors andconcealing the rear door han-dles in the window frame.

The upper cabin is taperedto the rear (from an overheadview) and the all-glass, sharplyraked roof tops a curvaceousbody with boldly flared fen-ders that give the back-end awide, muscular look.

Acura’s signature “float-ing” grille is surrounded by ahoneycomb-design air open-ing.

Unfortunately, the access toback seats is extremely limitedand going in and out of therear may cost you a bump onyour head.

HandlingDespite being an MDX-

based car, the ZDX handleswell — even better than thealready acclaimed MDX itself.

The ZDX is a fairly heavyvehicle that weighs in at 2007kilograms (4,427 pounds)and comes with a superb andappropriately named SuperHandling All-Wheel Drivesystem. This allows the ZDXto almost magically find gripin treacherous corners andwas most impressive in theextremely wet weather condi-tions experienced during mytime at the wheel.

The 3.7-litre V6 engine is asilky smooth power providerthat has very good torque inthe mid to upper end of itsspeed range. It can propel theZDX to 100 km/h in aboutseven seconds. On the downside, city fuel consumptionnumbers are on the high sideand it likes premium fuel.

SafetyThe ZDX achieved top five-

star ratings in crash tests per-formed by the U.S. NationalHighway Traffic SafetyAdministration (NHTSA) anda four-star rollover rating. An electronic stability systemcalled Vehicle Stability Assist(VSA) is standard and it alsocomes with airbag rolloverprotection, hill start assistand active front seat headrestraints.

ChallengeThe only challenge is that

the ZDX is not well appreci-ated in the marketplace (justlook at their sales figures onthis model), making this atruly niche vehicle.

I believe the main issueis that people don’t exactlyknow what this car standsfor — is it a sporty SUV, afive-door cross-over or just afancy looking five-door luxuryhatchback? The ZDX is none

of these, of course, but peopleare not aware of that in thefirst glance at the car or evenafter a brief test drive. I thinkonce buyers understand thereal intent of this car — itis a sporty, trendy alterna-tive to today’s boring SUVs— they might appreciate itmuch more. With pricingchanges and added standardequipment, we might even saythat the ZDX is a good value, which wasn’t the case whenit first came out a few yearsback.

The 2012 AcuraZDX startsat $54,990,according to theAcura Canadawebsite. Autoreviewer DavidChao calls it “asporty, trendyalternative totoday’s boringSUVs.”Submitted photo

Clutches are self-adjustingDear Tom and Ray:“What’s the deal with nonadjustable clutch-

es? I have driven manual transmissions mywhole driving life. I own a 2007 Toyota Matrix, and when I started stalling it more often dueto the clutch, I asked the dealer if he wouldadjust the clutch for me.

He said, ‘No, the clutch isn’t adjustable.’Of course, I’d never heard of sucha thing, and wondered if he wasjust blowing me off as a “womandriver” who didn’t know what shewas talking abut. Why would theymake clutches nonadjustable?”

— Trudy

TOM: They don’t make clutches“nonadjustable,” Trudy. But theydo make most of them “self-adjust-ing” these days, which means theycan’t be adjusted by your mechanic.

RAY: Since you’ve driven stick shifts all yourlife, you know that in the old days, clutchesroutinely had to be adjusted.

TOM: Normally, you always want there tobe an inch or so of free play in the pedal. Thatmeans for the first inch or so that you depressit, nothing happens. The pedal just flops there. There’s no resistance.

RAY: That tells you that the clutch is prop-erly adjusted, and is not riding itself (beingpartially disengaged at all times while youdrive around). Because a ridden clutch is a not-long-for-this-world clutch.

TOM: Normally, as a clutch goes out ofadjustment, the engagement point (the pointat which the car starts to move as you lift your

foot off of the clutch pedal) gets higher andhigher. Eventually, all the free play disappears, and then you’re riding the clutch all the timewithout knowing it. It’s as if your foot is par-tially on the clutch pedal, even though it’s not.

RAY: Eventually, people got sick of having to(1) remember to get the clutch adjusted all thetime and (2) replace their burned-out clutches

when they didn’t remember.TOM: So, to satisfy their

increasingly annoyed customersand protect their reputations forreliability, manufacturers startedusing hydraulic, or cable-based,self-adjusting clutches — whichdo what? They adjust the amountof free play, all the time, by them-selves.

RAY: At some point, whenthere’s no more adjustment room

left, then it’s time for a new clutch. You maybe at that point, Trudy.

TOM: If the engagement point for yourclutch has gotten too high, that’s probably thecase.

RAY: But if it’s too low, there are two pos-sibilities. One is that some air may have gotteninto your hydraulic system through a smallleak in the slave or master cylinder. You canhave the system bled to remove any air that’sin there.

TOM: If it improves after being bled, yournext step would be to find and fix the leak.

RAY: The other possibility is that youbought some extra-thick or all-weather floormats that are making it impossible for thepedal to reach all the way to the floor.

It’s perhaps the only time a wedding anniversary celebrationtakes a back seat.

Instead of opting for an exotic locale or a lush retreat,Uwe and Andrea Glaesser found themselves glued to a TV set ina Kamloops hotel room last Saturday.

The images staring back at them showed their 20-year-olddaughter Jasmin on the other side of the world — London, tobe exact — winning a bronze medal in team pursuit.

“It was very stressful. We were cheering, we were screaming, but then we were very excited,” Andrea said in an interviewWednesday. “But it’s been incredible since then. We have e-mails and voicemails coming in from all over the world.”

Competing alongside teammates Tara Whitten and GillianCarleton, Jasmin’s third-place finish came in a time of 3:17.915,narrowly besting the Australian side to secure Canada’s firstmedal in team pursuit.

The Canadians had to overcome a lackluster fourth-place fin-ish in the qualifying round one night earlier, but used the fol-lowing 24 hours to analyze, re-fresh and re-focus.

The result saw the Canadians pull ahead of the Aussies inthe second half of the race to claim third behind the second-place Americans and championship winning squad from GreatBritain.

“It’s been just phenomenal,” Jasmin told The NOW in aninterview from London Thursday morning. “I’ve been to theworld championships and I’ve been to the Pan American Games, but I never thought my racing here would have that much of an

impact and that I’d get this amount of support. The receptionfrom back home and from other Canadians over here has beenthe most special part of the whole experience.”

In winning bronze, Jasmin has challenged the notion thatexperience is everything.

Just four years removed from initially taking up the sport,Jasmin has only been teamed up with her Canadian counter-parts since an Olympic test event earlier this year.

“She was always driven in whatever she did,” Andrea said.“At school she’s always been competitive, so it came very nat-

ural to her that she was very competitive at sports as well. It’sjust in her to compete at things she loves to do.”

After February’s test event, Jasmin and her teammates re-located to Los Angeles to begin an intensive training regimenin attempt to gain equal footing with other cycling teams thathave been together for years.

“It was definitely a struggle for us to be smooth as a groupand to be really cohesive,” she said. “Looking back at some ofour races in February, it’s amazing to see the improvementwe’ve made even in that time.”

As for the her next competitive step, Jasmin has options:train for the upcoming track season, or perhaps focus on a bur-geoning road racing career that saw her capture the under-23Canadian time trial championship in June.

But for now, the focus is on home.Slated to return to Canada on Monday, Aug. 13, the home-

coming will truly live up to its namesake, as the Terry Fox gradhasn’t been home since April. In fact, she’s only slept in herown bed 10 times this year.

“I’m really excited just to have some time at home with myfamily and my friends,” she said.

Timko wins bronze in women’s soccerCoquitlam’s Brittany Timko did a little Canadian trailblazing

of her own this week as well.Timko and her Canadian women’s soccer team defeated

France 1-0 Thursday to claim the nation’s first Summer Gamesmedal in a traditional team sport since 1936.

The contest was decided late in injury time during the secondhalf, when Ontario native Diane Matheson netted the game win-ner in the 92nd minute.

The Canadians were under a barrage of French attacksthroughout the entire match, with a series of second-halfattempts finding goal posts and crossbars. A ball cleared fromthe Canadian goal line by Desiree Scott also helped to preservethe deadlock and gave Canada life.

Thursday’s win came just three days after the devastating,last-minute 4-3 loss to the U.S. in injury time on Monday.Having appeared in more than 100 games for Canada, Timkoand her club began the tourney with a 2-1 loss to Japan, beforerebounding with a 3-1 win over South Africa. From there, theteam tied Sweden 2-2 and defeated Great Britain 2-0.Nyhaug bounced from BMX in quarterfinals

Despite a remarkable comeback from yet another devastatinginjury, Coquitlam’s Tory Nyhaug failed to advance through tothe semifinal portion of the BMX competition.

Nyhaug narrowly bowed out of Thursday’s quarterfinals, pla-cing fifth in his heat after accumulating 20 points through fiveruns, one of which saw him crash on the 450-metre track.

The 20-year-old, who suffered a ruptured spleen and brokenwrist in May, needed a top-four placement to advance throughto today’s (Friday) semifinals.

Coquitlam’s Dane Dobbie, at right, put up five points in Wednesday’s 13-7 win over the Victoria Shamrocks.

Dane Dobbie keeps on keeping on.The Coquitlam Adanac sniper again

led the way offensively Wednesday night, posting four goals and an assist to pro-pel the Adanacs to a 13-7 win over theVictoria Shamrocks.

The A’s now lead their WesternLacrosse Association playoff series 2-0,with Dobbie potting 11 points in thosetwo contests.

The 26-year-old netted the openingmarker 28 seconds in, while also scoringCoquitlam’s final two first period goals toclose the opening frame at 5-3.

His fourth of the contest at 6:23 of thesecond opened up a 7-4 lead, one thatgrew to a 9-5 advantage after two periods.Though Victoria would tally the first

and last goals of the third, Coquitlamsqueezed four more goals past Victorianetminder Matt Flindell to close out theGame 2 win.

Dobbie, however, wasn’t the only five-point performer Wednesday, as MarkNegrin also bagged four goals and ahelper. Coquitlam native Travis Cornwallchipped in with two, while singles fromKevin Olson, Daniel McQuade andRyan Johnson rounded out Coquitlam’soffence.

Coquitlam netminder Nick Rose made31 saves on 38 shots to pick up his sec-ond straight series win. Game 3 goestonight (Friday) in Victoria, while Game4 is slated for 7:45 p.m. Sunday at theCoquitlam Sport and Leisure Complex.

Junior A’s one win awayThe junior Adanacs, meanwhile, are

one win away from their fourth straightleague playoff title after Wednesday’s 7-6win over the Delta Islanders.

Coquitlam opened up a 3-0 first periodlead, before Delta stormed back with fourin the second. Third-period goals by BenMcIntosh, Vincent Ricci and Wesley Bergclosed out the Coquitlam win.

Robert Church posted two goals andthree assists to lead the A’s offence, which also got contributions from AndyTaylor and Challen Rogers.

Now up 3-1 in the series, the Adanacslooked to close things out in Game 5,played Thursday after NOW deadlines.

Tomorrow’s Chiefs areabout to learn somethingfrom those who came before.

The Vancouver NortheastChiefs major midget hockeyteam opens up camp today(Friday), and in a move that’smeant to both inspire andinstruct, head coach DoneauMenard has invited back anumber of former players whohave since moved on to biggerand better things for a gameof pickup.

Slated for 8 p.m. at PlanetIce, an intrasquad game willtake to the ice featuring newprospects lined up alongsidethe likes of Columbus BlueJacket Ryan Johansen, GrandRapid Griffin Willie Coetzeeand Kelowna Rockets productJessey Astles, among others.

“It gives an opportunityfor some of these kids to seethat some of these guys aremoving on to play pro andof course, there’s quite a fewkids who are playing junior,”said Chiefs coach DoneauMenard. “Plus, it’s a goodchance for me to keep track of

a lot of these guys once theymove on.”

And while some of thosemarquee names will bereturning to their roots, otherbig names will be looking toestablish roots in the programstarting this weekend.

Coquitlam wunderkindMathew Barzal — the firstoverall pick in this year’sWHL bantam draft — isexpected to be at the three-day camp, as is Johansen’syounger brother Lucas.

Outside of Friday’s scrim-mage, the weekend-long pros-pects camp will also featuregoalie evaluations, playermeetings, drills and other on-ice tests.

“Almost every one of thesekids who will be out on Fridaywent directly from our pro-gram to play junior hockey,”Menard said. “It gives the newguys an opportunity to seehow they can move on fromhere. They can see how phys-ically strong these guys areand how much they work toget to the next level.”

Reds take third in Final FourA middle-of-the-pack team in the regular season, the

Coquitlam Reds closed out their post-season campaign witha third-place finish at last weekend’s B.C. Premier BaseballLeague Final Four tournament.

The Reds posted a 1-2 record, first dropping a 13-3 decisionto the eventual champion Okanagan Athletics, before rebound-ing to a 9-1 thrashing of Nanaimo. The Coquitlam crew closedthings out with an 11-5 loss to North Shore.

The Reds finished the regular season with a 26-22 record, good for sixth in the 13-team loop.

“We probably got as much out of this team as we could have,”said Reds coach Kyle Williams. “When you look at the big pic-ture, they probably exceeded where they should have got to onpaper this season.”

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections August 12 - 18, 2012★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Aries March 21 - April 19: Your romantic,pleasure-oriented, risk-taking mood continues.Children please. You’ll see beauty, nature’s poeticmagic. Sunday’s for short trips, siblings, news, errands – a friendly, good day. (Write a work-relatedmemo, or appeal to a loved one for understanding.)Home’s a tough go for you, 2010 to now (ultimately,to Oct. 5) – then improvement comes. So tough itout Monday to Wednesday morn, seek the “why”– could be your secrecy, or financial faults. Changedemanded. Wednesday p.m. is romantic but erratic:Thursday/Friday bring a stable attraction. To work,Saturday.Taurus April 20-May 20: The accent continueson home, property, parent/kid relations, security, foundations and retirement. Mother Nature playsa role: gardening brings joy. Rest, nap, indulge asluggish feeling. Pursue money opportunities, balancethe books, or purchase long-lasting items Sunday(before 2:49 p.m. PDT, 5:49 EDT, etc.). Machines/tools bought this day (especially in the a.m.) will “lastforever.” Casual friends, siblings, and your ability tocommunicate – these have been under pressure or“gummed up” since 2010 – and are again, Monday toearly Wednesday. October will bring a solution.Gemini May 21-June 20: Errands, communications, paperwork, short trips, siblings and casual friends– these fill your days, especially Wednesday to Friday.Be curious, explore, ask questions. You’re the starSunday: romance is stable yet warm; or flirty yetungraspable. Money has been a problem since 2010,perhaps even since 2008; you might have less now.(Sex, or the desire for change, is at the bottom of this.)The main problem will begin to dissolve by October, but caution is needed until then – e.g., Monday toWednesday noon, when you might be torn betweensmall fast money and big/distant.

Cancer June 21-July 22: Lie low, rest Sunday –a great day for contemplating career situations, andfor mending or renovating your home and/or yourmarriage. Be charitable, spiritual. Your energy roarsback Monday to Wednesday – though you’ll need itto overcome the various glitches: technological orelectrical Monday, career or home Tuesday. Thesedays also bring a relationship trend to a minorpeak: realize charm and affection are one of thebest ways to deal with a stubborn person/situation.Be cautious with money Wednesday, chase itThursday/Friday. Friends and travel Saturday. You’re attractive!Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Your energy, charisma andeffectiveness run high! Get out, start importantprojects, make contact, ask favours. Your optimism, popularity and joy reach skyward Sunday (thoughlittle of import occurs). Be cautious and diplomaticMonday to Wednesday noon – your energy ebbs, and links with government, head office and healthinstitutions are under stress, have been for severalyears. Much of this will lighten by October, somesolutions will appear. The “deeper problem”involves health, laziness vs. work. You’re the starWednesday noon to Friday: someone’s attracted!Money luck Saturday.Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Be restful, eat and dresssensibly. Protect your health. Avoid the bustlingcrowds, competitive situations. Your ambitionssucceed Sunday. Your social life has been subjectto baffling glitches and “empty periods” since 2010.This pall will lift in October, and by next summer yourpopularity will be re-established in big, joyous ways. The underlying problem? Volatility in financial andsexual zones has left you uncertain about who/whatto “attach to.” This led to tension – the enemy ofpopularity. Contemplate this Monday-Wednesday.

Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: The accent remains onoptimism, popularity, social delights, entertainment, flirtation and wish fulfillment – enjoy, especiallyWednesday noon to Friday. Sunday’s mellow, wise, offers relationship harmony. For the past few years, your career has struggled and presented you withinexplicable glitches, just as it does this Monday toWednesday. The root “cause” has been a shiftinghome or lack of a solid foundation (family support?)coupled with relationship volatility. The careerproblem will largely end by Oct. 5 onward (thoughthe volatility and “shifting home” won’t).Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21:March forth on ambitiousfronts, especially Wednesday afternoon to Friday.Lifestyle and health changes go well Sunday, asdo intimacy and finances. You can find a workableplan. Good day to invest in large machinery. Mondayto Wednesday highlights your major problem thisdecade: glitches and barriers in educational, ethical, publishing, legal, cultural or international (far travel)zones. Root cause: changeable work conditionsand/or stress. The good news is, these problems willshrink by half from October onward. (There isn’t anybad news.) Saturday brings hope, joy!Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: This is a lovely, smooth and enlightening week, except for theMonday to Wednesday period, when problems(re)erupt in sexual, financial, research, diagnostic, health and/or lifestyle areas. These problems arelikely not new – some have been around since2008, some since 2010. The difficulties will bereduced by half from Oct. 5 onward – the same datemarks a “new future” for you, in the sense that awet blanket lifts off your social, romantic situations, and you will grow much more optimistic. Decidenow, between quick or delayed money, casual orcommitted intimacy.

Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: The mystery continues,so be a detective. You have 10 days to find all theclues or “evidence.” The accent lies on depths, sexualurges, financial manoeuvres, lifestyle changes, commitments and consequences.Wednesday noon toFriday highlight these concerns, then Saturday bringsunderstanding – you see all these (sex, finances, etal) in a bigger picture. Tackle chores Sunday – you’llsucceed easily. This week’s only challenges arise inrelationships Monday to Wednesday: be diplomatic, realize others hold the “temporary aces.” Root of theproblem: your security is erratic.Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: A great week!Sunday’s romantic, Wednesday to Saturday bringexciting meetings, perhaps new love. But Mondayto Wednesday brings a flare-up of employment andhealth problems that have irritated you for a few years.Avoid wonky wiring, dangerous machinery. Seek adiagnosis. A government agency will either help orobstruct you. Nervous stress (probably associated withtravel, friends, or a legal or cultural matter) is at theroot of those work or health problems. Stress strips usof emotional feeling and sensation, two necessities. ByOctober, the problems will ebb to half.Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: The main accent lieson work, health, machinery and dependents. You cantake good steps forward in these zones Wednesdaynoon to Friday morning. (Aug. 12, too, if a dependentis involved.) For a few years, romance, creativityand risky ventures have run into brick walls. Someof these walls will crumble by October. Meanwhile, you can get yourself ready for future love, pleasure, creativity, etc., by seeing what is throwing up thesewalls: desire for money is the main “brick-builder.”(By summer 2013 onward, lucky love, creativity, willre-enter.) A friend, a prospect, Saturday!
