Bump it Up Writing Project in full swing, with students getting really excited and motivated to write fabulous, engaging texts. The focus for the past month has been on developing characters. Have a read of some excerpts from students and you’ll get the picture!

Numeracy results showing significant improvements across K-6, with differentiated, targeted small group instruction where ALL students are catered for.

Levelled Literacy Intervention in small groups for 10 students across the school to build on their reading skills and strategies so they can achieve stage outcomes.

Wonderful play sessions at lunch and recess with students working together as a team to have fun, get great exercise, develop their imagination, socialise and develop resilience.

Weekly PBL lessons where students learn explicitly what the values of being a Respectful, Resilient Achiever are across many settings and in different contexts.

Improved attendance in both classes. Today has been our top result so far, with 91% attendance in both classes. Our aim is to have over 95% attendance rates for both classes. It is vitally important that we support our students to stay resilient. In the words of Mural Dizdar, the Deputy Secretary of our Department: “Schools are the cornerstone of our community - they always will be. They provide stability and consistency, and right now this is more important than ever” Your support is greatly appreciated in maintaining this.

Lastly, I have some concerns regarding the safety of some students who are in the “walkers” group at the end of each day. Students are expected to walk behind the teacher on duty and wait sensibly for their parent to collect them at the end of the street. The safety of this group of students has always been a concern as there is no footpath, just a shared grass space on the edge of the road. I request that all parents collect their children from the school side of the road at the bottom of Short Street as I’ve witnessed on numerous occasions students running when they see their parent and running straight across the road. This is highly dangerous. Students have been told they are not to do this, or stand in the middle of the road. I strongly seek everyone’s support in ensuring we can improve this situation and I will be raising my concerns with the Health and Safety Officers of the Department to see what changes we can make to ensure the safety of all students. Now, some time for some fabulous student work! King Hugo by James, Year 3 King Hugo was boastful and rude. He held his head higher than the clouds. He walked around boasting how wonderful he was. King Hugo’s crown was covered in jewels and gleamed like the ocean’s brightest pearl, perched majestically on his head. Mr Twit by Jarrah, year 4 Mr Twit’s long, wavy gruesome beard which contained last night’s meal, hung horridly on his gruesome face. His long pointy nose had nostrils like caves with loads of bristly hair sprouting from them. His smudgy face was as brown as dark, gloomy forest and he clearly never took a bath.

The Lost Thing by Laila, Year 2 Krue has a glamorous red sparkly body. It is so sparkly you can see it from another planet. He has eyes the size of a rhino and they are yellow like the sun. Krue feels miserable. The way people stare at him makes him feel left out and he does not like it. Have a great end of week and weekend!

PBL Last week students participated in a PBL lesson aimed at increasing cultural awareness and respect towards people from different backgrounds. This was in preparation for our Harmony Day excursion. On Friday all students attended the Harmony Day excursion to learn about Indian culture and all students showed respect which was excellent to see. Students now have a heightened understanding of the need to be culturally sensitive. This week students have been participating in activities as a part of the Bullying No Way campaign. Students have been busy interviewing each other about what bullying is and strategies to deal with it should it occur. Their videography will form a Filmpond to be shared with the school community. SRC The SRC held a productive meeting today with a full agenda. We have decided to postpone our Nymboida PS visit and our Men’s Shed visit due to the virus. We also discussed the need for our library to be updated. Students will be researching possible layouts over the next week. To ensure variety, a new sports roster will also be implemented in the coming week. After the success of the recent handball competition, the SRC have proposed a drawing completion to be held before the end of term. Finally, we discussed the possibility of holding a Crazy Hair Day to fundraise for cancer. The funds from this will be combined with the money raised last year from the cookie jars.
