This free lecture series will provide a chronological history centring on one aspect of Cork’s Built Heritage-the Fortifications of Cork City and County, over a series of one hour lectures held at the Cork City Library from August to December 2015. Our ancestors have been defending and protecting Cork city and environs in various forms from the prehistoric hillforts of the Bronze Age up to the 18th century star shaped fortifications. The line-up of speakers includes researchers from the Department of Archaeology in UCC, the OPW, commercial archaeologists and local independent scholars who will focus on the historical and archaeological evidence while also providing an interesting background of the social history, heritage and modern day conservation of these significant sites.
