G R A F F I T I H E R B A R I A P A I N T I N G P A P E R W O R K A R T I S T I C S T A T E M E N T My artistic work focuses on the four areas GRAFFITI, HERBARIA, PAINTING and PAPERWORK. I usually combine one or more aspects of my work depending on the situation. I conduct my artistic research on the plant family of grasses under both scientific and aesthetic aspects. My work is to be located in conceptual art.

I N S P I R A T I O N / S C I E N T I F I C B A C K G R O U N D The plant family of grasses is one of the most species-rich and thus most differentiated in the world. Inconspicuous and pervasive at the same time they inhabit our globe. Pioneer plants in the most inhospitable places prevent soil erosion, lush lawns in temperate climates serve ecological, regenerative-compensatory as well as aesthetic purposes. Sweet grasses, sour grasses and rushes form a gene pool of an estimated ten thousand species worldwide. The fatal contrast to this presence is the lack of knowledge about the enormous cultural-anthropological significance of the grasses and their general unknownness. Probably the most important significance of the plant family is its role as a staple food for a large part of the mammals including us humans. All cereals are grasses. Depending on the continent, there are different cultured preferences, such as wheat, rye and barley in Europe, corn in North and Central America, millet in India or rice in Asia. Bamboo grasses in Asia, for example, play an important role as building material, also in our latitudes Ried-covered roofs are still well known. The suspension bridge Q'iswachaka in the Peruvian province of Canas is an example of community-building and ecologically meaningful construction. In addition to this knowledge of cultural anthropology and the corresponding sustainable cultural techniques, there is the great new field of genetic research. The experiments with genetically modified seeds are known under the premise to be able to feed a growing world population with dwindling resources. Here not only new varieties are in progress, but also experiments on growing e.g. in hydroponic greenhouses. There also is research into the extreme adaptability of grasses with regard to the desertification of former green areas. I N T E N T I O N / C O N T E M P O R A R Y R E L E V A N C E With my artistic work, I want to make a contribution to a successful bridge between science and art. For a sustainable approach to nature, it is essential to establish a comprehensible link between research with nature and an emotional approach to it. Through the both enlightening as well as highly aesthetic visualization of this subject this exchange takes place.

G R A F F I T I Each grass plant consists of a difficult composite structure of flexible and firm cell structures which expresses itself in astonishing elasticity and captivating delicacy. These essentials are highlighted in the stencil graffiti works. On the one hand, these are wall friezes made in the original size as the in-situ grass collections, and on the other hand large-format pictograms of herbarised grasses sprayed on walls. In a multipart copying and duplication process, using both - technical and manual techniques, a self-adhesive stencil is created - in original size for the grass friezes, oversized for the herbariated grasses. By means of this template, the plants are sprayed with mostly black spray paint directly on corresponding inner or outer walls. They become an integral part of the architecture and enter into an animated dialogue with it. The contrast of black paint and mostly white background makes the plants seem to float in front of the wall. This optical illusion exerts a fascinating appeal on the viewer. Likewise, the individual dissolved from the plant compound and thus charged with presence astounds. An emotional bond with the opposite is evoked. By contrast, the oversized Herbaria grasses fascinate with intrinsic elegance and associative closeness to typographic characters.

H E R B A R I A Every graffiti intervention is preceded by a local grass collection. The entire flowering plant is removed with its root. It follows the photographing and surveying of each grass individual. Thereafter, it is botanically determined and herbarized. It will be kinked, pressed and dried in a format of 12 x 12 inch. Later, collection folders are created for each project. These herbariums form an ever-growing archive and are a possible part of a presentation.

P A I N T I N G Undoubtedly inimitable is the range of greens of the grasses. Even a closer look at the flowers and fruit stalks reveals a sensual sea of form and color. The seemingly uniform green mass contains a variety of individually pronounced beauty. These phenomenological features are the inspiration for exploration in painting. Questions of color intensity, color authenticity, rhythm and tact, light and darkness are scouted. Analogous to the infinite variety of possibilities, the series 'Phytomass' investigates these phenomena. Striped blades of grass are produced in multilayered oil glazes on canvas. Individually painted, extremely high-stretched image formats can be flexibly composed into large-scale choreographies depending on the room situation. Approximately 100 of these 160 cm high stalk strips have been created since 2014. The end of the series is open.

P A P E R W O R K The series of drawings in various media represent another playful approach to the subject matter. They add a poetic dimension to the artistic work. Portraits of single grasses in one-line drawings, a gilded weaver bird during the construction of his grassy nest or quick sketches of the landscaping of the New York Highline created by landscape architect Piet Oudolf make their appearance here. Recently, large-scale paper works with images of individual grass plants in 23-carat gold leaf are increasingly emerging. A homageing character is clear.
