‘Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus’. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NIV)

On Long Service leave, I recently spent time in the northern part of France visiting the memorial sites from World War ll.

On the way through the area, I specifically wanted to visit a restaurant that was near Villers Bretonneux, which was highly acclaimed. When we arrived, the owner of the hotel and chef greeted us. Once he realized we were Australian, he brought out a folder full of information about how the Australian forces had helped his family in World War ll, as well as booklets of many Remembrance Day services he had attended at the Australian Memorial.

He said how thankful he and all the people of the area were that Australian servicemen had saved them. Even when you visit the local school, Victoria School, there is a huge sign that says:

‘Never Forget Australia’. The level of appreciation that was shown in many ways throughout this area of France will stay with me forever.

As part of our Pastoral Care program, we focus on the Lutheran Education Values over the year and link them with our College values of Care, Dignity and Respect. Our focus value at present is Appreciation. We understand it as recognizing and valuing highly the gifts and blessings given to us and surrounding us.

As we are slowly moving towards our last Primary Student Council for the year I thought I would share some of the appreciation statements that were presented at our fortnightly meetings.

Students were thankful for: the Hub, new gardens and plants, Canberra trip, Sports Development each week, House Sports days, Zumba club, new handball courts, the hopscotch and so many more. At the meetings it was also great to hear how relationships were important: they were thankful for new students who came to our school, our buddy classes and on many occasions our staff.

Research has shown that thankfulness and gratitude is so important to our mental health –

that if we focus on the good things we have and push aside the negative thoughts we become more optimistic and able to be creative and flexible.

As this is my last Cornerstone Article for the year I would like to also thank our Primary families, staff and students for making 2016 a successful year. Each year our community strengthens and we know that we have God’s hand supporting us on our journey.

At the beginning of Semester Two, nine very keen readers from Year 4 – 6 joined together to create our Upper Primary Book Club. In Term 3 we read Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah and this term we are reading The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo. We love meeting each week and discussing the book and Mrs Lovell always brings a treat to share! Zoe from Year 5 says that she loves the different types of books that we have read and that they have been so interesting. Jorja has learnt many new things and enjoys the discussions. story of the birth of Jesus. A script is being selected and developed and rehearsals

will begin soon. If your child would like to participate, please let Pastor Matt know:

Reformation

Last Sunday was a big day for our St Peters Congregation. Over 30 choristers assembled in the gallery of the Chapel to sing Bach’s cantata ‘Wer da gläubet und getauft wird‘ (BWV 37). It was a wonderful gift to the congregation, and one that represented many hours of hard work on the part of the musicians.

The occasion for this performance was Reformation Sunday. It commemmorates events that took place on 31 October 1517, when Martin Luther prepared his 95 Theses and, as the story goes, nailed them to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. Luther intended the theses to start an academic discussion over certain teachings and practices in the church which he was concerned about. Within a short space of time, however, the document had been translated into German, and widely distributed. This became, in effect, the start of what is now known as the Protestant Reformation.

Why do we commemorate the Reformation? This is a good question. It’s true that the consequences of the Reformation have not been all good. Tensions between Protestants and Catholics have seen some terrible conflicts and injustices over the centuries, and these are nothing to be proud of. At the same time, we need to acknowledge that there is another side to the story. Do you realise that certain things we take for granted in Australia today can be traced back directly to the Reformation? Luther and his collegues championed religious teachings that Lutherans, along with many other Christians, treasure and take for granted. Take, for instance, the understanding that God promises forgiveness and new life not on the basis of whether we have lived a perfect life or not, but by the work of Jesus Christ who gave his life on the cross for all people. These bold religious teachings have had flow-on effects to the rest of society. For example, Luther was a strong advocate for civic education so that all people, boys and girls, rich and poor, could learn to read and write for themselves. This ideal is what lies behind the motto: excellence in Christian co-education.

Next year is the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Plans are already underway for marking this in the wider St Peters community. Keep an ear out for more as the time draws closer. Meanwhile, why not take this opportunity to read up on the Reformation and its impact on history and society; ask what it means to have the word ‘Lutheran‘ in the name of this school; and reflect on what our Reformation DNA means for us as we walk into the future.

I would like to introduce Alfred, St Peters Springfield’s Compassion Australia sponsor child. Sponsoring Alfred is a project initiated by the 2016 Student Executive Team. To cover the monthly costs of sponsoring Alfred, each year level from Year 7 -12 has come up with an innovative way to fundraise.

• Year 7: gave a gold coin donation to wear crazy socks and tiaras.

• Year 8: gave a gold coin donation and ran a lunchtime disco.

• Year 9: organised a high school movie night and prizes for a gold coin donation.

• Year 10: kept it simple with a collective money jar.

• Year 11 & 12: are busy with exams and are supporting Alfred by adding donations to each grades fundraiser.

To cover the sponsorship costs during our Summer break, Prep to Year 6 will be able to switch their gold coin donations for some special reindeer food ready for Christmas Eve. By our Campus continuing our sponsorship of Alfred for many more years, the students continue to demonstrate their commitment to care, dignity and respect.

Business management excursion Last Friday the Yr 11 and 12 Business Management class visited the “Little Tokyo Two” creative space and learning center in Springfield. Little Tokyo Two is a collaborative learning and working community bringing like-minded professionals together with the aim of starting new and exciting business ideas and creations. This amazing opportunity allowed students to meet and interact with budding entrepreneurs currently working on new and exciting start-up businesses and gave them a real insight into what is possible in this new and exciting business world.

Last term, students in Years 3 – 10 were offered the opportunity to participate in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools Competitions in English and Mathematics. Participation in the competitions was voluntary and it was wonderful to see students live up to the school motto, Plus Ultra, and accept the challenge. Congratulations to all students who competed for their excellent results.

Congratulations to all boys who competed at the AIC Athletics Championships, held Tuesday and Wednesday last week. Building on the success of the Girls finishing 6th in QGSSSA Athletics, the boys from 5 – 12 had an outstanding few days of competition. St Peters finished 4th overall yesterday after finishing 7th last year and 8th for the previous 7 years. St Peters was 70 points ahead of 5th and only 17.5 points behind 3rd place. This is an outstanding effort by all boys involved and is a wonderful achievement which all boys can be very proud.

Our 16yrs boys also won their age group with 4 Springfield boys involved – Marcelo Arriagada-Malone, Trent Ostrofski, Jayden Moroney and Dylan Williams. Trent and Jayden were also part of the 16yrs Relay team which placed 1st. All these boys scored significant points for SPLC in their events. The Open Boys age group placed 3rd overall and in a great result out Year 5 boys placed 4th in their age group. Below are some individual results from some of the best performers on the day:

We also congratulate our Year 6 boys who competed to the best of their ability against schools with much larger student numbers. St Peters had the 21 Year 6 boys from Springfield to choose from whereas most other schools have upwards of 150 boys to choose from. This typifies the attitude of all our boys in going out and giving it a go. Congratulations to all boys!

St Peters Athletics AwardsCongratulations to Tyla Stolberg and Marcelo Arriagada-Malone who have been recognised for their efforts and performance during the QGSSSA and AIC Athletics seasons. Tyla received the Best Performer at QGSSSA Athletics for placing 1st B Division Discus, 2nd A Division Shot Put and 3rd A Division Javelin.

Marcelo receives the Earle Shield for Spirit. This award goes to a student who represents the very best of St Peters in attitude, commitment and performance during the Athletics Season. We congratulate both these students on their individual honours.

St Peters U10 Met South West CricketThe Under 10 St Peters Maroon team (3/152) defeated St Laurence’s College (7/139) on Saturday. It was an exciting game that could have gone either way until some big hitting from Nhan Ngyuen (29 runs), Fletcher Horrigan (18 runs), Harry Barratt (16 runs), Nick Denny (12 runs) and Mitchell Harrington (10 runs). There were some equally impressive bowling performances by Mitchell Harrington (2/17), Aaron Middleberg (2/18), Harry Barratt (1/6), Nick Denny (1/8) and Jamie Nelson (1/20).
