Cornwall a leader on accessibility frontTodd [email protected]

CORNWALL, Ontario - From the hallways of the flagship Benson Centre to new play struc-tures in community parks, the City of Cornwall is showing a commitment to making things access-ible to all residents.

It’s been 10 years since the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) came into effect, and in that time, the city has made tre-mendous gains on accessibility.

“We have become known as one of the lead-ers in the province on accessibility issues,” said Manon Levesque, deputy city clerk and

accessibility advisor. “We took a pro-active approach many years ago and it is starting to pay dividends. The results are becoming more appar-ent and we continue to make strides every year.”

The city has an accessibility plan which sets out a goal of achieving an accessible and barrier-free community by 2025. To help achieve that goal, the city relies in part on the Municipal Accessibility Advisory Committee (MAAC). This volunteer group of residents advises council on accessibility matters and provides annual updates on Cornwall’s progress in becoming barrier-free.

On Thursday MAAC took things a step further by organizing a tour to showcase the accessibility features in place at a number of public facilities and parks in Cornwall. City officials, MAAC mem-bers and other community leaders got to see and hear about the accessibility features in place at the Aquatic Centre, Benson Centre, Cornwall Public Library, Cornwall Transit and numerous parks.

Tour participants got to see a whole slate of features that add to Cornwall’s reputation as an accessible community. This includes ramped

pool entrances and swimming aids at the Aquatic Centre, designated seating areas for persons in wheelchairs and their families at the Benson Centre and elevator access and large-print

offerings at the Library, to name just a few. Tour participants were transported by Cornwall Transit, which proudly offers a Handi-Transit service.

Some other highlights of the city’s accessibil-ity efforts include:

- 13 city parks now have splashpads and/or accessible playground equipment, with plans to add more in future years.

- Eight city intersections are now equipped with audible pedestrian signals

- Accessible signage has been installed in municipal buildings

- Free parking is provided to motorists dis-playing an accessible parking pass (this includes on-street parking and in city-owned parking lots)

- Making information more accessible through improvements to the city website, including the development of a mobile version for mobile devices such as phones and tablets

“Thanks to work of MAAC and the support of city council, we really have come a long way in removing barriers in our community,” said Levesque.

newsCity hall considers creating task force to help with potential refugee influxTodd [email protected]

CORNWALL, Ontario – City hall is looking at putting together a task force to help with the resettlement of Syrian refugees.

Councillors issued orders to administration Monday night to look at the specifics of how the city can help when it comes to an influx of what could be hundreds of refugees who will presum-ably stay at the Nav Centre in Cornwall.

While nothing has been announced by the federal government concerning a plan to resettle refugees in Cornwall, council voted to get ready anyway.

“I know the question of Syrian refugees has been on our minds a lot. Although we have not been officially notified of what exactly the gov-ernment’s intention will be, it is clear our com-munity will be called upon,” said Coun. Bernadette Clement. “I believe that it’s time for the city to set up a committee. I know our managers have been listening to issues. We have to show we have a group together…to assist in any way.”

But there were some questions about why this move would be done now, before the fed-eral government makes its Tuesday announce-ment on its plan to relocate 25,000 refugees to Canada.

“I’m just worried about putting the cart before the horse. We’re getting ready to do what?” said Coun. David Murphy. “We don’t

know what needs will have to be filled.”Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy weighed in

further.“The City of Cornwall has been asked to do

nothing,” he said. “The logistics are going to be nightmare…but I wish them the best of luck in doing this flawlessly.”

EMS chief Myles Cassidy said any refugees relocated to Cornwall would likely be on an interim basis.

“There are a number of phases to this oper-ation,” he said. “And, a place like the Nav Centre could be termed an interim lodging centre. The key there is interim. While those people are in the community, there may be an impact on health and regular health services as any other bump in population might provide.”

Coun. Andre Rivette suggested the former general hospital should be used to help with any health care issues the refugees might present.

“If we start backlogging our hospitals, we have a problem,” he said, suggesting the emer-gency room in Cornwall is busy enough as it is. “Whoever they give it to, they should be getting an area of the general hospital.

“It’s not saying we don’t want to treat them…let’s just make sure the community doesn’t suffer.”

Council will learn what kind of shape the task force will take at its Dec. 14 meeting.

Council approves move to study new development chargesTODD [email protected]

CORNWALL, Ontario – City taxpayers will be on the hook for more than $50,000 to pay for a consultant to study whether Cornwall starts to include development charges for future building within city limits.

Council voted Monday night to green-light a $60,000 study from Watson and Associates to determine whether city hall

should begin to issue development charges for contractors who build large-scale pro-jects in Cornwall.

“This is long overdue,” said Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy. “This is in no way saying we are going to have development charges. But we’re going to understand the development process.”

The subject is touchy, to be sure.Developers are often opposed to the

charges, which can cover the cost of paying

pipe for water and sewer systems, emer-gency services and other infrastructure which are now borne by the taxpayer.

“For the longest time I was against development charges, but I realize things change.said Coun. Denis Carr, who sug-gested city administrators should create the report – and save about $54,000 in consult-ant fees.

“On four occasions we have discussed this…and had reports from administration,”

said Carr. “Surely by now administration knows more ab out development charges than Watson and associates.

“I have great confidence they will come up with a great report.”

But council agreed with Coun. Elaine MacDonald’s suggestion that over time the face of administration has changed via retirements and the like.

The report is expected to be completed in the weeks and months ahead.

MICHAeL HeenAn: Popular backbone of navy vets association passes awayTodd [email protected]

CORNWALL, Ontario - Not unlike the keel of a ship, Michael Heenan was the backbone of the Cornwall and District Navy Veterans Association, helping to rescue that agency from financial ruin decades ago.

The former football lineman that played for the Cornwall Charges/Mustangs junior team in the 1960s, was also a force on the local music scene as a drummer for rock bands of many stripes. He passed away Thursday following a short battle with cancer at the age of 69.

Heenan worked for years at Domtar in Cornwall, but music, football and his beloved navy club were areas where he will be remembered.

“The navy club wouldn’t exist today if it wasn’t for Mike and all his hard work,” said a grief-stricken Diane Riley, president of the club,

who tearfully recounted her time with Heenan. “I’m kind of emotional. He’s been the driving force behind the navy club.”

Heenan’s leadership as a longtime president of the club and manager of its Sixth Street build-ing helped to bring it back from the edge of financial peril decades ago.

He stayed on as president of the club until 2014, and only retired this spring from his duties as manager.

“He was still very active with the club,” said Riley. “He still did our newsletter. And he was a shoulder for me to lean on.”

Heenan also dabbled in social media, regu-larly updating a popular Facebook page with snippets of Cornwall history, including photographs.

Just this year Heenan was a big part of a Cornwall Chargers/Mustangs football reunion held, of course, at the navy club.

The Cornwall Chargers/Mustangs were a

junior farm team of the Ottawa Rough Riders, that existed for three seasons leading up to 1968, playing in the Canadian Inter-Provincial Junior Football League. Former Cornwall mayor Ed Lumley was coach of the club (known as the Chargers in 1966, and the Mustangs in subse-quent seasons).

“Mike was the salt of the earth,” recalled Lumley. “Mike was always very appreciative of that footbal team.”

His musical exploits included decades as a drummer and singer. Heenan’s son Kelly recalls a Christmas when he was struggling to find a gift for his father.

“There was a 45 that one of my dad’s bands had released,” recalled Kelly. The song was ‘Slipper Lily.’

“How many kids can say their dad released a record?” said Kelly, who hit upon re-recording the song and presenting it to Michael as a gift. “I was in a band, and we decided to record the

song. We kind of modernized it.”Heenan is also survived by his wife Linda,

and children Robin Heenan-Mikkelsen, Casey and Lindsay.

Plans were being completed to hold a navy club event to celebrate Heenan’s life.

Paramedics selling Christmas trees to benefit local youth

CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall and area paramedics are banding together to help raise money for local children.

The paramedics have created the ‘Wish Upon a Medic’ foundation to raise money for local sick and injured children. The foundation’s first pro-ject is to sell Christmas trees in advance of the holidays.

The sale of the trees - white spruces - will be done Dec. 5 and with only a limited number in supply, orders are being taken right now.

Last year paramedics raised funds for some

young cancer patients and decided to take it up a notch this year.

“We decided to expand it and created an incorporated foundation for charity,” said para-medic Tim Hartle.

All the proceeds from the sale of the $40 trees will go towards helping area youth. The locally-grown trees will be between five and eight feet tall. Paramedic Sophie Tasse said the foundation plans to do fundraising events throughout the year. To order a tree send an email to [email protected].

CORNWALL, Ontario - Santa Claus posed for festive pictures with his four-legged friends (no, not the reindeer) to help raise $1,350 for the SD&G SPCA.

Dozens of Cornwall area residents and their fur babies went down to the SD&G SPCA (located at 550 Boundary Road in Cornwall) on November 14-15, for the Pet Pictures With Santa event in sup-port of the animal shelter.

For the third year, photographer and SD&G

SPCA animal care attendant Sophie Lemay volun-teered her time both days, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., to help capture the ‘purr-fect’ moment.

“There’s so many reasons I enjoy ‘Pet Pictures With Santa,’ other than raising money for a great cause,” said Lemay, owner-operator of Sophytography. “Just seeing how much people love their animals and have them as a part of their family. More and more we are seeing family pictures done. And as a shelter worker, I often see animals arrive in poor conditions and from terrible places. It’s refreshing to see a more posi-tive side of my job, alongside adoptions of

course.”Each session was $20 or $25 with multiple

pets. All proceeds go to support the local animal shelter, which operates on fundraising initia-tives, fees, and donations alone - it receives no government funding whatsoever.

Frustrated tenants forced to deal with Alice Street fireTodd [email protected]

CORNWALL, Ontario – Smoke billowed from an apartment complex fire Monday afternoon on Alice Street in Cornwall.

Witnesses said it did not appear as though anyone was injured in the fire, though tenants in the apartment were clearly frustrated with what they felt was a lack of information flowing from firefighters and police at the scene.

One man, who did not provide his name but said he lived in one of the apartments, said fire and police “were very rude” with him when he was seeking answers from them.

It should be noted that firefighters were still

working at the time to clear the building of thick, acrid smoke – the smell of which perme-ated the neighbourhood.

“I build roofs and I was working on one at the corner of Louisa and First and someone yelled to me that my place was on fire,” continued the man. “I have three cats and some fish. I don’t know what is going on with them.

“A lot of us in this building have animals.”The man was cut short by firefighters who

advised him and another man to move away from the building. The men were standing at the front door to one of the apartments.

“If you guys would move across the street it would make our jobs a lot easier,” one of the fire-

fighters told the men. Many neighbours could be found on the

street, or their front porches (wrapped in blan-kets) to take in the spectacle that occurred in the 200-block of Alice Street.

“At first we heard the fire trucks, and when we came out there was smoke coming from the eavestrough on the top,” said neighbour Justin

Rainey, who added it appeared as though the fire actually started on a lower level.

It’s unclear what caused the fire, or how many people lived in the apartment building.

While the flames were extinguished, fire-fighters were still working at sundown to clear the building of smoke, with large fans set up at the front doorway.

Coat drive in full gearAdAm [email protected]

CORNWALL, Ontario - As cold weather draws closer and temperatures start to drop, the third annual ‘One Warm Coat’ drive is ready to heat things up.

Doctors Joel Leger and Kylie Draper of Cornwall Spine Care Plus+ are continuing a heart-warming initiative to help the city’s underprivil-eged stay protected from the wintery weather.

Residents are being asked to donate new or gently used winter coats and accessories. Aside from winter gear, monetary donations are also accepted. All funds and jackets raised during the campaign will go directly to the Salvation Army in Cornwall.

“Pastor Oren Cole is already in touch with area families in need, so they have places to go before

we even get them,” said Leger. The local business was able to collect over 60

in 2013, and 110 in 2014, not including mittens and toques.

Draper’s hoping this year’s haul will be their biggest yet.

It all started to help local families who are forced to make financial decisions between pur-chasing clothing for the upcoming months and food for the holiday season.

“At Spine Care+, our primary goal is to guide and educate this community on all facets related to health and optimal physical function,” said Leger.

If you’re interested in donating, visit Cornwall Spine Care+ at 117 Eleventh Street West, between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 613-938-1000 or visit online at w w w . s p i n e c a r e p l u s . c a o r www.facebook.com/CornwallSpineCarePlus.

SD and G Highlanders deserve better of usToDD [email protected]

This weekend there will be a celebration in Cornwall, but there’s a good chance it’s flying under the radar in many circles, as everyone gears up for Christmas.

The SD and G Highlanders will hold their annu-al celebration at the Cornwall Armoury – the regi-mental dinner - complete with kilts, tradition and more than a few nods to the past.

The Highlanders, or Glengarrians as they are more colloquially known (Glens, in some circles), have been an institution in Cornwall for genera-tions. The famed unit can trace its origins all the way back to the militias of the War of 1812.

Today the regiment belongs to 33 Canadian Brigade Group, part of the Canadian Forces Primary Reserve. Its job is a simple one: to close with and destroy the enemy. In other words, when heavy lifting is involved it is units like the Glens that get the call.

We’re lucky to have them. Not because Canada (or SD and G for that matter) is in danger of inva-sion, but because the traditions and leadership the unit has instilled within itself have been poured into the young men and women who wear Canadian Forces uniforms with pride.

Those same individuals have “real” jobs during the week, and despite the fact that they trade in

camouflaged army fatigues for suits, ties or cover-alls they still carry with them the discipline of the military…even when they’re not at the armoury.

I have met, on and off, with several of the com-manding officers of the regiment. My boot camp began during Ice Storm ‘98 when Sandy Robertson was the boss – a no-nonsense man who enjoyed the respect of troopers who were tasked with cleaning up the community as trees and branches were falling.

Later I met regularly with Rob Duda, a lanky individual whose ability to shout orders (while maintaining an air of respect) beguiled his soft-spoken nature.

For now it is Steve Young, who I last heard was deployed to Haiti to help maintain the security of that country whilst it completes democratic elec-tions. He is due to retire soon, which means another soldier will one day soon command the local unit.

There are also hundreds of other nameless, faceless rank-and-file soldiers who make up the Glens that are quick to offer a smile, and a “sir”, when I visit the armoury for one story or another.

In spite of its monolithic appearance, the armoury is actually a pretty fun place, often filled with people who are more “family” than “military.”

Maybe that’s part of why the Highlanders are making a concerted effort to rebrand themselves. “Citizen soldiers” is a term you should expect to

hear more of, as the unit approaches its 150th anniversary in 2018. While just below the surface the Glens have always been a pillar of the com-munity, publicly the regiment has suffered through a bit of an identity crisis.

Gone are the days when teenaged boys (and later girls) joined cadets corps in droves. Consequently the number of young people enlist-ing in the army has also dropped. This, coupled with the bureaucracy that permeates the Canadian Forces nationally has translated into some would-be recruits waiting months (some-times more than a year) to learn if they have been

accepted into the army, which hasn’t helped either.

As a consequence, the Highlanders have slipped – just a bit – below the radar.

This shouldn’t be. Too many young men from wars decades ago, and others from battles fought most recently, have given too much for the Glens to be an afterthought in this community.

We should all welcome the SD and G Highlanders back to the forefront in this region. There has always been a place at the table for men and women of honour…even if the chair has got-ten just a bit cold.

LETTERSLast week’s editorial was a complete miss: reader

Editor:“We have the room......We have the jobs....

We have the heart....”Please notice the situation in Europe before

pontificating about “fear mongering”. The Paris massacre was masterminded by a Jihadi pass-ing as a ‘refugee.’ There are experts who claim

that up to 20% of ‘refugees’ in Europe are linked to ISIS. There are states in the US, many states, that are NOT taking in any of these invaders. Surely we can learn a lesson from these quar-ters so as not to repeat their mistakes.

Your suggestion of accepting thousands of unscreened people into Canada is nothing

short of lunacy! Even if we do screen them what do we need polygamy and 5.6 children per child bearing female for? Our welfare sys-tem will suffer damage or breakdown break down under this system just as it has in Denmark, UK, Germany, Greece etc. etc. Your short article in OPINION (Seaway News Nov 19

2015) is irresponsible and naive. Yes, “We have the room......We have the jobs....We have the heart....” But you at least don’t have the brains to look at the refugee problem dispassionately and logically with Canada’s better interests at heart.

But on second thought, maybe he was rightEditor:I almost wept when I read last week’s

editorial. I am somewhat new to the area, and I find

many folks here have had little contact with those from more foreign lands. I have travelled

a lot over the years: mostly Europe, the Caribbean and Mexico, and to North Africa. I have been welcomed everywhere. But the most heart-warming welcomes I ever had were in the homes of families during my travels in North Africa. I was treated like gold, and given

whatever the household could afford to give. Our religions were different, our back-

grounds and language were different, and our caring hearts were the same. I so welcome the influx of new people into the Cornwall and the SD&G area. We will all be the better for it.

I am now a retired senior on a pension, so I cannot help financially to settle a Syrian family, but can I help in other ways? I, too, know what it is like to be a stranger in a strange land.

OPINION

‘Old sweats’ remember Big Mike HeenanCLAUDE MCINTOSH

The annual gathering of old sweats (aka Jockfest) at the Navy Club on Sixth Street won’t be the same without Big Mike Heenan, who along with Andy Petepiece founded the event that at one point swelled to a couple of hun-dred “oldtimers”.

A lot of the old sweats were back at the Navy Club Wednesday night. However, it had a more solemn tone. They were remembering Big Mike who died last week at age 69 after a brief illness.

Heenan, a bear of a man, was a football line-man at Cornwall Collegiate and later with Ed Lumley’s Cornwall junior football squad. He also had a stint with the Hawkesbury senior club.

Big Mike grew up on Whitehead Avenue where most of his neighbourhood chums were into music. At one time, there were 13 young musicians living in the neighbourhood. Big Mike was a drummer, and a pretty good one.

Among the groups he played with during the Sixties and Seventies - when local bands flourished - were The Shermans, The Galaxies and The Lancers. He was a driving force in the local musicians guild and served a couple of terms as president.

Back in the Sixties a lot of big names played gigs at Massena’s Willow Grove nightclub, a popular weekend hangout for the young, and at times rambunctious, Cornwall crowd, which was the Willow’s bread and butter.

One of the bands booked for a gig at the Willow was Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels.

Just before opening night the band’s drummer took ill. The call for a replacement was put through to the guild in Cornwall. Big Mike answered the call and played a two-weekend stint with one of the hottest rock bands in the U.S.

*****Anybody who has gone to the crowded

Cornwall Community Hospital emergency room with a non-life threatening ailment knows that the wait time can be anywhere from three to seven hours.

But there is a city hospital, actually two, where the wait time to see a doctor is measured in minutes.

And elective surgery can be carried out in a day or two.

Problem for humans is that you have to be a cat or a dog.

******Ryan Gosling, the 35-year-old Hollywood

superstar who lists Cornwall as his hometown, plays alongside veteran Harrison Ford in “Blade Runner 2” which will flash across the big screens on Dec. 23. Oscar watchers think there might be an nomination in it for Gosling. He has two other movies in the Hollywood hopper: “The Big Short” in which he plays a sleazy investor looking to cash in on the housing bubble downturn. And, he will play alongside Russell Crowe, Matt Bower and Kim Basinger in “The Nice Guys”. ... An Australian journalist was in Cornwall last week researching a piece on Gosling.

*****Financially challenged municipalities are

looking for new revenue sources and Brockville found one (actually an old source). In July 2014 the city brought back development fees that had been mothballed in 2009. In the final five months of 2014, the fees brought in $30,000. Developers are charged $3,450 for a new single or semi-detached home. Multiple dwellings are charged up to $2,600 per unit. Of course, in most cases the extra cost is passed on to the buyer, just as the HST. Cornwall doesn’t have development fees, yet.

******Freshly minted Massena councillor Steve

O’Shaughnessy (no relation to our mayor) had to chew on a plate of crow soon after being elected. He launched a one-man campaign to have Alcoa Field renamed because the com-pany had cut 500 jobs at its Massena works. Mayor Timmy Currier thought it was a dumb idea and so did other members of council who pointed that the company was still the village’s major employer and a big player in charitable causes. Admitting that “90% of the people he talked to” after his news release was issued were against the idea, the councillor scrapped the idea.

TRIVIA ANSWER On Feb. 1, 1975 a sod-turning ceremony launched construction of Cornwall Civic Complex. The complex was offi-cially opened on Oct. 31, 1976. A few weeks later the Harlem Globetrotters played in front of the city’s largest indoor sports crowd. Paid attendance was 5,500.

TRIVIA On April 9, 1956 city council gave first reading to a bylaw for the borrowing of $1.730 million for construction of this project

which up to that time was the most expensive taxpayer-funded project in the city’s history. The facility is still operating.

SPORTS STUFF Bob “Argo” McNally, retired federal government employee now liv-ing in Las Vegas (aka Lost Wages), is visiting his hometown. McNally played football for Cornwall Collegiate in the Sixties and ranks as one of the best running backs to come out of a local high school. A 100-metre sprinter, he tied the oldest Eastern Ontario Secondary School Association (EOSSA) track record when he clocked 10.2 in 1965 during an EOSSA meet in Kingston. The record had been unmatched for 32 years. He went on to star with the University of Windsor Lancers.

After many years of competing in major tal-ent competitions over the past four years, Cornwall’s Kevin Rivette will hit the stage as a Franco-Ontarian artist yet again.

Rivette will compete in the Canadian-wide talent search “Fais Moi Ta Toune” staged as prov-incial finalist in the 7-77 vocal interpretation age category.

He’s no stranger to that classification. Rivette has been named the male vocalist champion in other major talent competitions in the past few years including the “Trois Pistoles en Chanson” in Trois Pistoles Québec and a semi-final spot at “Propulse Ta Voix” in St-Alexandre de Kamouraska, Que.

“I love performing,” said Rivette. “Over the past few years, in fact most of my life, I have been searching within myself for happiness in my soul. Parking lot rage leads to arrest

CORNWALL, Ontario - A Cornwall woman was unexpectedly confronted by her ex common-law husband in a parking lot, where he threatened to burn down her house.

Cornwall Community Police Service said the incident happened on Tuesday (Nov. 10).

Police say the man also prevented the 43-year-old woman’s vehicle from exiting the parking lot.

The 38-year-old suspect was located at his residence and held for a bail hearing.

He was charged with threats, criminal harass-ment, and forcible confinement.

No names were released to protect the vic-tim’s identity.

Clear-cut theft?Cornwall police caught up with a 28-year-old

city man accused of shoplifting razors from a Ninth Street store on Oct. 18, nearly a month later, on Tuesday (Nov. 10), walking around Eleventh and Sydney streets.

James Labelle was charged with theft under $5,000 and breach of probation for failing to keep the peace.

He was released to appear in court on December 17.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The annual Holiday Wine & Gourmet Tastings event continues to grow in its appeal to oenophiles, foodies, and anyone interested in supporting charity.

Close to 500 guests attended the swanky affair at the Nav Centre in Cornwall on Saturday, Nov. 21.

“We’re inches away from $50,000,” said Angie Baker, chair of the Holiday Wine & Gourmet Tastings volunteer event committee.

It was later announced that some $48,296 had been raised, with a little bit more money expected to trickle in.

Organizers pledged at least $20,000 to the local charitable organization, with an additional $5,000 being matched by Scotiabank Cornwall.

In 2014, the event raised $39,000.It looks like Santa heard Pat Clarke, honour-

ary chair of the event committee, who at the outset said: “This time, we’re really hoping to raise $50,000.”

Nav Centre’s Luc McCabe (a main judge at Upper Canada Village’s annual Food Lovers’

Field Days - Iron Pan competition and season two contestant of Chopped Canada) catered the event.

The classy affair also sported a new look compared to its two previous editions, and fea-tured live jazz music, fine cuisine, gourmet des-sert stations, martini bar, live and silent auction.

“The real key to the success of the evening is we had over 100 sponsors,” said Baker. “Seaway News was our primary media partner. Without TC Media - Cornwall we would not have gotten

the word out the way we did.”Lori Greer, executive director of the United

Way of SDG, said the 2015 campaign, which aims to raise $710,000 by Dec. 19 to support the 17 non-profit agencies (offering 18 programs) under its umbrella, is past the 25 per cent mark.

For more information on how to support the charitable organization, call 613-932-2051 or visit unitedwaysdg.com and www.facebook.com/United-WayCentraide-of-Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Cornwall edition of the Run to end MS will have a new component next year - a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.

Well, that’s the plan.Karen Torrie-Racine, volunteer office manager

for the Cornwall chapter of the MS Society, said officials from Ottawa will be in the area in the next week or so to map out the route planned for the new marathon edition to the run.

A marathon must be 42.195 km, and Torrie-Racine said the plan is to have racers run from Crysler Park Marina west of the city into Cornwall.

She said local race officials will submit the plan to Boston Marathon officials for approval.

“It will be a really big draw for this area,” said Torrie-Racine. “We’re one of the first races of the year, so people in eastern Ontario will be really interested.”

The 2016 edition of the Run to End MS will be the first one to ever incorporate a marathon com-ponent. Previous iterations have included a five- and 10-km race, as well as a half marathon.

The race is scheduled for April 30. Racers who will be competing in the components aside from the full marathon will still leave from St. Lawrence College and run west of the city.

Marathon racers, who will be preregistered, will be bused to Crysler Park Marina to begin their run. Last year the event raised $26,000 for the MS Society of Canada.

Run to End MS plans to include Boston Marathon qualifier

Union Gas program benefi ts local homeowners

One Owen Sound couple

will fi nd winter warmer

from now on, thanks to a

helpful referral from a

neighbour. As the owners of

an older home, Donald and

his wife realized they could

benefi t from the Union Gas Home Weatherization

Program, just as one of their neighbours had.

“This house is over 100 years old, so it has never

been fully insulated,” Donald says. “You could feel

the cold from down in the basement, and the furnace

would just never shut off.”

So when a neighbour told him about the program

that pays for energy-saving upgrades to homes like

his, he took action right away. Following simple

instructions on the Union Gas website, Donald

contacted the authorized contractor, who guided him

through the application and assessment process.

“You apply fi rst, then a person comes to do an

energy assessment. He did quite a few tests and saw

that the place really needed insulation.”

Soon after the energy assessment was completed,

Donald was called by the contractor to schedule

the work. Insulation was installed in the basement

and then a fi re retardant was applied. The project

was completed in a single day, and the

improvement was immediate.

“The whole house was different. The fl oors feel

warmer, gas consumption will be less. And the house

just feels more comfortable.”

For Donald and his wife, free home energy

improvements worth $2,861.60, along with a

23 per cent reduction in annual gas consumption,

have provided welcome relief.

As Donald puts it, “It saves the environment and you

get to save all way round. To me this is just a win-win.”

To fi nd out more about the Union Gas

Home Weatherization Program

go to uniongas.com/weatherization. There is a limit to the number of applications we can accept every year. Union Gas pays all costs associated with this program. WE PAY. YOU SAVE. Now’s the time to make your home more energy effi cient. Last winter broke cold weather records – a fact you felt in your bones if your home doesn’t have enough insulation. Find out if you’re eligible for the program that provides and pays for upgrades that will insulate your home and save you up to 30 per cent every year in energy costs.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Alexandria gets lit up in all its Christmas splendour this weekend.

The 10th annual Festival of Lights kicks off Saturday in Island Park.

The event, sponsored by the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, includes more than 200,000 lights as well as displays created by local schools, agencies and service clubs, said volunteer Bonnie McDonald.

Several thousand people are expected to take in the event that runs for the entire month of December in the evening from 5 to 10 p.m.

“On opening night we usually get about 1,000 people,” said McDonald.

The free event will include a performance from Glengarry County’s own Kathleen Sauve at Alexandria Island Park. Sauve’s show will be pre-ceded by a fireworks show at about 6:15 p.m.

Dec. 5 from 9 a.m. to noon there will be a Christmas cookie decorating event, while Dec. 8 a Christmas memorial celebration takes place at 6:30 p.m. The closing ceremonies, which includes more fireworks, goes Dec. 31 at 6 p.m.

The cookie event is limited seating. Contact Anik Samson at 613-525-1533 ext 222 to reserve your spot.

B&B Foods is the sponsor for the opening night and New Year’s Eve fireworks.

National Child Day: Kidding around with elected officialsADAM [email protected]

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Boys and Girls Club of Cornwall/SDG celebrated National Child Day with an after (school) party of epic proportions.

This year’s guest list included: MPP Jim McDonell, Cornwall Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy, and Councillors Justin Towndale and Carilyne Hebert, in addition to 40 students from two local French school boards, and youth enrolled in the club’s after-school programs.

“National Child Day celebrates children’s rights,” said Jacquie Richards, executive director of BGC Cornwall/SDG.

The elected officials visited with their young-est constituents and toured the facilities on Friday (Nov. 20), as the youngsters enjoyed plenty of fun activities.

“There are 44 clubs celebrating today, and we’re saying, come join our party,” said Richards.

National Child Day was established in 1993 to commemorate the United Nations’ adoption of two documents centered on children’s rights.

Health Link celebrates launch in Cornwall

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Cornwall Community Hospital and fellow Health Link partners celebrated the beginning of a new health care model for the area’s high-needs patients.

“In our first two weeks, we have started to help seven patients receive coordinated care,” said Christine Penney, vice president of Community Programs at CCH. “These are patients who were at risk of falling through the cracks and not receiving the care they need.”

The small celebration, complete with cake and a visit from Cornwall Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy, took place during a Stormont, Glengarry, Cornwall,

& Akwesasne Health Links Steering Committee meeting at the Centre de sante communautaire de l’Estrie on Friday (November 20).

The local Health Links program is comprised of doctors, nurses, specialists, hospitals, primary and home care, long-term care, and community agen-cies, aiming to provide coordinated access to servi-ces, for those with a number of complex medical conditions, who use the health care system frequently.

Penney said that statistics show complex patients make up only five per cent of Ontario’s population, but use two-thirds of the health care

budget.CCH says the role of the Health Links care

coordinator is to meet with patients to learn about their health care goals; bring patients, their families,

and care providers together for meetings; monitor the patient’s progress; adjust care plans, as required; and facilitate collaboration with health and social service workers involved with the patient.

The uniform thickness of a butterflied boneless leg of lamb makes it extremely simple to cook and serve. This cut of meat shouldn’t be hard to find, but if you get one that is boned and tied, ask your butcher to butterfly it.

INGREDIENTS: 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice 4 garlic cloves, minced 1 tablespoon dried oregano (preferably Greek), crumbled 2 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon black pep-per 1 (4 1/2- to 5-lb) butterflied boneless leg of lamb, trimmed of fat Special equipment: a large (2-gallon) heavy-duty sealable plastic bag; 3 or 4 (10- to 12-inch) metal skewers preparation.

Combine oil, lemon juice, garlic, oregano, salt, and pepper in sealable plastic bag. Add lamb and seal bag, pressing out air. Turn bag to coat lamb, then put bag in a shallow baking pan and marin-ate, chilled, turning bag over occasionally, at least 8 hours. Bring lamb to room temperature, about 1 hour, before grilling. Prepare grill for cooking over direct heat with medium-hot charcoal (moderate heat for gas); see Grilling Procedure. Remove lamb from marinade (discard marinade) and run 3 or 4

skewers lengthwise through lamb about 2 inches apart. Grill on a lightly oiled grill rack, covered only if using gas grill, turning over occasionally and, if necessary, moving around on grill to avoid flare-ups, until thermometer registers 125 to 128°F, 8 to

14 minutes total for medium-rare.Transfer lamb to a cutting board and remove

skewers. Let lamb stand, loosely covered with foil, 20 minutes. (Internal temperature will rise to 135°F while meat stands.) Cut across the grain into slices.

NOTES: · If you aren’t able to grill outdoors, lamb can be cooked in a hot lightly oiled well-sea-soned large (2-burner) ridged grill pan, uncovered, turning over once, 12 to 14 minutes per side.

· Lamb can marinate up to 24 hours.

VOLUME 6, NUMÉRO 33LE JEUDI 26 NOVEMBRE 2015

38 985 EXEMPLAIRES

Madame Lauzon a été une athlète toute sa vie;

CORNWALL, Ontario - Mix blank canvases, splashes of paint, colourful palettes, and a 20-minute time limit - you’ve got the second annual Art Battle in Cornwall.

Jason Sauve made it to the final round of the head-to-head painting challenge and live art auc-tion at the Social, Conference & Event Centre, on Friday (Nov. 20).

“You’re just going off instinct,” said Sauve, one of a dozen Art Battle Canada participants. “At first the crowd was messing me up. Then, I shut it all down, until it was just me and the painting. I had a rough idea of what I was doing since it’s fall. The challenge was not fussing on the smaller aspects. I had to learn not to obsess as much over the details, and let the work dictate the direction.”

Cornwall’s second Art Battle Canada event participants included: Sylvie Labrecque, Jennifer Shearer, Jade Thompson, Morgan Tremblay, Emma Cardona, Laura Leah Traverse, Kimberly Cameron, Jacqueline Milner, and Lorna Foreman.

The winner of this year’s competition is Kristine Picken. She will be painting again in the regional finals in June 2016.

Sauve’s painting received the highest bid after the battle during the live auction. Each artist received 50 per cent of the sale.

Sauve has already made his mark on the local music scene, as the songwriter-guitarist of local country rock outfit, SwitchGear. But over the last year, he’s added burgeoning painter to his repertoire.

“I made the website, then it was on the back burner with the band and everything. I picked up the brush this spring for therapeutic reasons and put some online for fun - it got so many likes and comments. It felt fulfilling...then I did a few more and people wanted to buy them. It’s a blessing.”

Jesse McMahon, Art Battle Canada event organizer and artist, described the Seaway City as a hidden gem for artistic talent and community support.

“Cornwall is fantastic,” said McMahon. “I wasn’t sure what to expect when we came last year, but there’s talent and energy...everyone is so helpful.”

She added: “This event helps to build aware-ness about local art - and for artists to realize that the people are interested in what they’re doing - don’t be afraid to put yourself out there.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - A ride on the informa-tion super highway for a couple of local motor-cycle enthusiasts was a lot shorter than they thought.

Randy Lalonde and Trevor Jeaurond were sharing stories about their respective love for Kawasaki motorcycles in an online forum where like-minded riders swap information about their bikes.

While people from all over Canada, and indeed the world, are members of Kawasaki Triples Canada the Cornwall pair had no idea - until a little sleuthing was completed - that they lived in the same community.

Jeaurond is in the homestretch of a project to rebuild a 1978 Kawasaki KH400 that was relegat-ed to the basement for 27 years. He recently met up with Lalonde, who has pretty much complet-ed work on his 1975 Kawasakie 500 - and she’s a beauty.

The bike was purchased five years ago for just $400, but is now priceless in the mind of Lalonde, who confesses he loves the idea of being on the open road atop two wheels.

“It’s the power, and the feeling of acceleration,”

he said. “And the smell. Nothing smells the same as a two-stroke motor.”

The motor was blown when Lalonde picked up the bike, but since then has been rebuilt with new racing pistons, a rebuilt crank and new car-buretors...among other pieces.

Lalonde holds a special place in his heart for Long Sault’s Jim Reid who welded and fitted some exhaust pipes for the bike.

“It runs ok,” confessed Lalonde, who sug-gested some tuning work will have to be com-pleted before the bike is in top shape. “Next spring I will be fully insured and on the road.

“Good to go, for sure.”

Randy Lalonde shows off his fully-restored 1975 Kawasaki 500 triple at his Cornwall home.

Around the world, and right next door, for two motorcycle enthusiasts

opinion

Most of you have taken the drive to Lake Placid, the tourist mecca of ‘The North Country’ of New York State. Its hinterland is the Adirondacks, an extension of the Canadian Shield.

The Adirondacks are dotted with the ruins of abandoned mining sites (such as Tahawus); a spider web of disused railway beds (including New York Central’s) and mysterious ghost villages (Adirondac, whose houses were trailered down the road to Newcomb, much like the relocation of the Lost Villages).

When the US or Canada customs grill us about our intended destination or most recent Adirondack travels, obscure places such as Porcavi l le , White Fathers, Thatcherville, Whippleville and Onchiota make the list. Just imagine the look on your dog’s face if you were to explain the Pythagorean Theorem to it. Any agent who has actually listened to our response to his query gets that look on his face. Most ignore what we’ve said and just mumble, “Have a nice day.” With the few who are locals, well-travelled and knowledgeable, we have friendly exchanges of experiences. They start with something like, “Yeah, interesting place. If you go to the far end, near the cliff, you’ll find an old school bus. Behind it is a spring with good drinking water. By the way, how’s the canoeing there?”

More puzzling place naming: try naming the bodies of water that Lake Placid and Saranac Lake are on. Asking locally will prob-ably give you incorrect answers. Only after some perusing of detailed maps and Google searching will you get the correct answers: Mirror (not Placid) and Flower (not Saranac).

Mirror Lake is barely more than a pond, but it has been bestowed with the name ‘lake’. This autumn we paddled Osgood Pond for the first time. It’s almost six kilometers from end to end, many times larger than Mirror ‘Lake’, but it ’s saddled with the demeaning suffix ‘Pond’.

there’s more to the adirondacks than lake placidEn route to Lake Placid, you may have

noticed signage for Deer River Flow, Santa Clara Flow or Higley Flow. No dictionary has provided me with that usage of the term ‘flow’. However, our paddling experience has taught us that a ‘flow’ originated as a

river, but became more like a lake by having its outlet dammed, sometimes just for rec-reational purposes, or harnessing the backed-up reservoir for milling or generat-ing hydro power.

My favour ite playground is the

Adirondacks. I know a lot about it, thanks to scrutinizing detailed maps, venturing beyond signs that warn “DEAD END - UNIMPROVED ROAD –USE AT YOUR RISK” and querying locals. However, what I know is overshadowed by what I’ve yet to learn.

Confessions of astore santa

While I was working as a store Santa, a boy asked me for an electric train set. “If you get your train,” I told him, “your dad is going to want to play with it too. Is that all right?”

The boy became very quiet. So, moving the conversation along,

I asked, “What else would you like Santa to bring you?”

He promptly replied, “Another train.”
