Afritex Ventures is an investment holding company with fully established longline and trawler fishing operations in Mozambique and Mauritius. Our entire vessel fleet is self-owned and managed and all locations have state of the art packing and processing facilities, one with an on-site ice plant. All our operations are EU and HACCP accredited and our longline facility in Mozambique is BRC and Fair Trade certified.

Our team collectively has decades of expertise in the fishing industry, with knowledge and skills development passed to all personnel across the board. Our group places high value on fair and ethical treatment of our personnel and corporate social responsibility. We are actively involved with various non-profit organisations – contributing towards HIV awareness, drug rehabilitation and have established a feeding program where we donate fish, which is a high source of protein to orphanages.

Our freshly caught seafood is exported as fresh or value-added into a range of chef inspired retail lines, merchandised under our Wild Side and Pristine Seafoods brands, the renowned Margaritaville brand and various private labels. These retail lines include a variety of tuna poke options, fish steaks with delectable toppings and sauces, seafood burgers, langoustine mac ‘n cheese and fish tacos. Our sought after shellfish is exported worldwide and can be found in various michelin star restaurants in Europe. Our Afritex group is constantly striving to keep up with global market trends and to develop new and exciting products.

The Afritex group places high value on social responsibility and sustainability in the method in which we harvest our seafood and in conducting fair and ethical business practices. Afritex

in collaboration with Sustainable Fisheries Partnership, a non-profit global organisation, is in the process of launching a FIP in both Mozambique and Mauritius. Quality and client

service excellence is what our company strives to maintain across the board.

PESCAMOZPescamoz is our primary Mozambique longline fishing operation with state-of-the-art EU, BRC, FDA, HACCP and Fair

Trade accredited packing and processing facility, conveniently based in the Port of Beira and from which we manage

our self-owned fleet of longline vessels. The focus of our Pescamoz operation is on processing and value adding of

tuna, swordfish and mahi mahi into a dynamic range of customer-focused retail and food service lines. This facility is

equipped with a quay-side ice plant with the capacity to manufacture 25 tons of ice per day.

KALIPESCAKalipesca LDA is our industrial deep sea fishing operation, established in 2008, situated in the Port of Maputo,

Mozambique and from which we yield our premium shellfish range of prawns, langoustines, lobster and deep sea crab.

All product is flash frozen and packed at sea, ensuring the highest quality and freshness. Kalipesca owns and manages

three industrial deep-sea trawling vessels—namely Atiya, Izmaylovo and Quinlan Fraser. The management team has

extensive experience in the fishing sector in Mozambique—from deep-sea prawn trawling, shallow water prawn fishing,

longline and line fishing to handling, logistics and processing of seafood for over twenty years.

AFRITEX FISHINGAfritex Fishing is our Demersal and Longline operations based in Port Louis, Mauritius—with a fleet of self-owned

vessels. Our company has been awarded long-term fishing rights in Mauritius and our packaging and processing

facility is HACCP, FDA and EU approved. The core focus is on export of fresh tuna, swordfish, mahi mahi and a range

of demersal fish species including snapper, grouper and emperor.

AFRITEX TRADINGThe Afritex global trading division comprises of a team of traders with a wealth of knowledge and experience in their

field, with the primary focus being on sourcing the best quality seafood at the most competitive prices, either from our

own Longline and Trawler fishing operations or from trusted suppliers around the globe. With the head office based in

Mauritius, Afritex Trading is ideally located to trade with Asia, Africa and Europe within the working day. Africa has long

been known as “the bread basket of the world” and with 65% of the world’s remaining arable land left in the region, we

believe our Trading division is strategically placed to bring the world to Africa and take Africa to the world.

PRISTINE SEAFOODS Pristine Seafoods is the retail brand name for our Premium and Wild Side product ranges. This new range was developed

with our executive chef, working closely with consumer demand and preferences. The Premium range is a high-end,

top quality product consisting of various value-added seafood steaks with delectable toppings, tuna poke kits, seafood

burgers and langoustine mac ‘n cheese. Our contemporary Wild Side range is targeted at the millennial generation and

is focused on convenience and affordability.

DAVID J. DIAMOND Chief Executive Officer, Afritex Group

DAVID has an extensive career in investment banking, private equity and the start up of new businesses. David started his career as a Mergers & Acquisition investment banker at Credit Suisse in New York City. He later was a founder of the London-based private equity firm Compass Partners and led several of their investments. In the past 10 years, David has co-founded several successful ventures including Tuun China, a medical device business headquartered in Shanghai, InteMedica, a nutritional and supplements manufacturer and Sonexus Health, a pharmaceutical commercialization company. David currently serves on several boards across a variety of industries.

MICHAEL H. BANIGAN Executive Director, Afritex Group

MIKE has a long and distinguished career in creating, developing and growing new businesses. Mike started his career in insurance services, eventually becoming President of one of General Electric’s insurance divisions. He then founded the Chronic Disease Fund, the world’s largest patient assistance foundation. Mike has also successfully developed several businesses in the pharmaceutical commercialization field, including DiseaseTrak and Sonexus Health. Mike serves on several boards across a variety of industries.

JOEL M. FINEBERGExecutive Director, Afritex Group/Kalipesca/Pescamoz

JOEL is one of the most well known attorneys in the United States and a successful real estate developer in California. Joel is also the founder of Class Action Insurance Consultants which provides consulting services for companies seeking to obtain GAAP qualified risk transfer of class action liability and risk. Joel is a graduate of Emory University and received his J.D. from the Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law, Dallas, Texas. He has over 20 years of active litigation practice in state and federal courts across the country.

GAVIN VAN DER BURGH Chief Commercial Officer, Global Fishing

GAVIN currently holds the position of Chief Commercial Officer of the group fishing division and has Executive Directorship of Pescamoz, Kalipesca, Pristine Seafoods and Afritex Mauritius. Gavin has extensive experience and knowledge in the seafood industry, which has solidified relationships with leading retail giants in the USA and worldwide. Gavin is a past member of the Global Ocean’s Council and World Economic Forum.

MARLENE LOMBARD • Group Financial Controller, Afritex Group

MARLENE graduated from RAU University in 1996 with a BCom Economics degree. Marlene joined Ernst & Young in Entrepreneurial services, where she gained valuable experience and soon advanced to management level. Over the years Marlene held several senior financial management positions in various large multinational corporations before moving into a commercial management position in the seafood sector, where she has been exclusively focused for the last 10 years. Marlene has been in the Finance department of Afritex since inception.

FILIPE LOBO • CEO, Kalipesca & Country Manager, Mozambique

FILIPE currently holds the position of CEO of Kalipesca and is the Mozambique Country Manager. His main responsibilities include strategy formulation, ensuring that the strategy determined is implemented within the business, daily management and reporting. Filipe is also assisting in the setup, strategy formulation, procurement and other functions at Afritex Mauritius’ new joint venture Pescamoz LDA—that includes a large fishing operation and production facility based in Beira, Mozambique. Prior to joining Kalipesca LDA, Filipe served as Oceanfresh’s Country Manager in Mozambique and handled the daily management tasks of the deep sea fishing operations and local and international export trading.

PANCHO ROSALES • General Manager, Pescamoz – Beira

PANCHO has 30 years extensive experience in the international fishing industry, having managed both facilities and fishing vessels. Pancho began his career in 1985 as Factory Manager for Pesquera in Chile and went on to work for companies such as Exportadora Shayne Group (based in Chile, Uruguay and Namibia), Lalandi Group, Pesca Fresca, Blue Cape Fishing, Pioneer Group and Ematum. He joined the Afritex Group in 2015 and has now assumed the position of Pescamoz General Manager. His extensive operational skills, international marketing understanding and general management have proven to be an asset to the Afritex Group.

KYLE NOLD • VP Key Accounts, Afritex Ventures USA

KYLE joined the Afritex team in 2019, after successfully building a seafood wholesale business in South Africa, as well as a seafood import and sales business in the USA. His experience stems from grass roots in the pelagic species industry, to present day where he is facilitating the operations and relationships with multiple USA retailers as well as overseeing the success of the company’s fresh product entry and sales into the USA market place.

DOROTHY FORLEE • Operations Manager, Afritex – Mauritius

DOROTHY completed her BCompt (Bachelor of Accounting Sciences) at Unisa in 2002 and completed accounting and auditing articleship with Bradley & van der Merwe in 2003. She qualified as a Certified Financial Accountant in 2004, whereafter she started her career in the fishing industry. Since joining a hake fishing company in 2005, Dorothy has gained extensive experience in finance, human resources, distribution, sales and operations—having climbed up to a senior management level. Dorothy joined the Afritex team as Vessel Operations Manager in 2014.

NATASHA has a long history with the Afritex Group, having joined the team in 2009. With her extensive knowledge in this field, Natasha heads up our marketing team which handles new product development, retail packaging design and compliance, liaising with retail clients, operational packaging, advertising, international exhibitions and the full marketing scope of the group. She is also actively involved in our group sustainability and corporate social responsibility projects, which are endeavours close to her heart.

JASON has over 20 years’ experience in the Hospitality Industry with a diverse background in Fine Dining Restaurants and Hotels. He has worked for some of the World’s Best Chefs like, Charlie Trotter, Ann Quatrano, Steven Wade, Grant Achatz, Bruno Menard, Steven Pyles, Michelin Rated Ritz Carlton Dining Room in Atlanta, GA. Longline fishing is a commercial fishing technique

using a long line, called the main line, with baited

hooks attached at intervals by means of branch

lines called snoods or gangions. A snood is a short

length of line, attached to the main line using a clip

or swivel, with the hook at the other end. This can be

at the surface or at the bottom. Lines can also be set

by means of an anchor, or left to drift.

INFRASTRUCTURE

Afritex operates two premium Longline fishing

operations, one in Mozambique and the other in

Mauritius. Each operation has a state-of-the-art

packing and processing facility and a self-owned

fleet of vessels. Our current fleet consists of 19

longline vessels.

Both packing and processing facilities are EU, FDA

and HACCP accredited with our Mozambique

facility carrying BRC standard 8 and Fair Trade

certifications. All our vessels are Dolphin Safe

certified.

Our newly incorporated Demersal fishing operation will form part of our Afritex Fishing Ltd company based in Mauritius. Our 3 new self-owned demersal fishing vessels will focus on the catch of deep-water Red Snapper, Emperor, Grouper and Seabream, amongst other demersal fish species. Demersal fish will be packed in our fully established EU, FDA and HACCP accredited facility by our highly trained team.

Our demersal vessels are equipped to store all linefish on ice, to ensure optimum temperatures are maintained. Fish is discharged from the boat, packed into insulated polystyrene boxes with frozen gel packs and exported to clients globally on the same day, resulting in premium quality and outstanding freshness.

Taking Africa to the World.

Afritex markets the Mozambique and Mauritius production of tuna, swordfish and mahi mahi into global markets including Japan, USA, Europe, New Zealand, South Africa and Australia. No market can be more critical than the world famous Japanese Tsukiji Tuna auction market in Tokyo, which frequently sees our tuna being offered. Global shipments are conducted by controlled airfreight on a weekly basis from both operations in Mozambique and Mauritius, making our supply resource one of very few twelve-month-a-year production areas.

Afritex has the majority shareholding in the deep sea trawling operations, Kalipesca based in Maputo, Mozambique. The fleet comprises of three self owned deep sea fishing trawler vessels—namely Atiya, Izmaylovo and Quinlan Fraser.

These vessels target pink prawn and by-catch of langoustines, lobster and deep sea crab. Trawling at depths in excess of 500m and flash freezing the product on board results in the highest quality standards of sea frozen deep sea crustaceans.

Our prawns, langoustine and lobster are exported worldwide, specifically to the high-end restaurant markets in Switzerland and is also highly sought after by our Far East customer base, specifically China, Hong Kong, Korea and Japan—where the quality of the products is held in such high regard that the product is eaten raw in the real high-end Japanese style sushi restaurants.

Kalipesca LDA hold a significant quota in Mozambique, with all three vessels fishing twelve months a year, thereby ensuring excellent supply continuity.

Quality from the Deep Sea.

Afritex has developed Facilatrace™, a highly sophisticated and unique fish traceability system as part of our sustainability policy. We have the world’s first electronic tracking system that can trace an individual fish not only to the name of the vessel, skipper and voyage, but actually to the six-hour window as well as the exact geographical location that the particular fish was caught in. Fish Trace is a fully integrated traceability programme that we believe will become the cornerstone of any sustainability programme globally.

Each individual fish is tagged with a unique barcode on board the vessel. All information pertaining to each fish is linked to the unique barcode and with a simple scan, all information can become immediately available from anywhere in the world.

We are Fair Trade certified!

Our Mozambique facility, Pescamoz, has achieved Fair Trade certification and all our retail lines will now proudly carry the Fair Trade logo.

Fair Trade USA is a non-profit organisation which enables sustainable development and community empowerment by cultivating a more equitable global trade model that benefits fishermen, farmers and ultimately the earth. A stringent audit process if carried out before certifying an establishment as Fair Trade.

Our company will contribute premiums according to product sold under the Fair Trade label, to an established fund run by a committee of fishermen. The funds will be utilised for upliftment of the Beira, Mozambique community as decided upon by the committee. This upliftment would usually be improvement of education facilities, orphanages or improvement of community infrastructure.

Sustainability. It’s Vital to Us.

The Afritex group recognises the need to protect and preserve the marine resources of our oceans in order to ensure the success of future generations by implementing sustainable fishing practices across our entire organisation. We are proud to announce that we recently signed an agreement with Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP), a globally recognised non-profit organisation committed to worldwide seafood sustainability.

In collaboration with SFP, Afritex will be implementing a Fisheries Improvement Plan across all our operations in Mozambique and Mauritius. Furthermore, we are members of the SFP international Tuna Roundtable, which is a tuna advisory board consisting of highly influential seafood companies and individuals from around the world. We have given our commitment to the Target 75 initiative, with the goal of converting 75% of the world’s seafood by volume produced in a manner that can be labeled sustainable or improving toward sustainability, by the end of 2020.

Furthermore, Afritex carries the Dolphin Safe certification on all our longline vessels. Our skippers and crew have been fully trained in dolphin safe and other sustainable fishing practices.

Environmental sustainability is of utmost importance to our group and as such we practice the following sustainable fishing techniques:

• Prohibit the use of wire leaders or shark lines; • Avoid hot spots (i.e. areas where sharks are commonly caught in large

numbers); • Set Longline gear in deeper waters; • Move fishing locations when shark interaction rates are high; • Reduce soak times; • Set gear at night so as to avoid the risk to birds in conjunction with line setters

in order to set the lines deeper; • Use circle hooks instead of J-Type hooks; • Conduct fleet communications to determine where marine mammal sighting

may have occurred and move fishing locations when interactions occur; • Practice Dolphin Safe procedures.

Pescamoz, LDA our fishing operation in Beira, Mozambique have been accredited with the new standard 8 BRC global standard for food safety, which is the newest BRC standard available.

The BRC accreditation, awarded after a stringent, independent audit stands testament to the robust and effective operational and supply chain procedures adhere to and valued by our operations across the board.

Developed by retailers, the standards under the British Retail Consortium umbrella focus on food safety, packaging and packaging materials, storage and distribution, consumer products, agents and brokers, and retail. The food safety standards in particular, are intended to be applied as a framework by which many companies base their supplier assessment programs.
