Abdellah, PhD, RN, FAAN, has retired from the position of Dean and Professor of the Graduate School of Nursing at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. In honor of Dr. Abdellah’s achievements as a national pioneer in nursing research, as an expert in health policy, and for making invaluable contributions to the health of the nation, the Faye G. Abdellah Endowed Chair has been established to continue research in military nursing science. Her successor is Patricia Hinton Walker, formerly Dean of Nursing at the University of Colorado. Janet D. Allan, PhD, RN, FAAN, has been appointed by President David J. Ramsay, DM, DPhil, as Dean of the University of Maryland School of Nursing. Allan also serves as the vice chair of the US Preventive Services Task Force. Connie Barden, RN,MSN, CCRN,CCNS, is the new president of the American Asociation of Critical-Care Nurses. Dorrie Fontaine, RN, DNSc, FAAN, is the president-elect. Joanne Disch, PhD, RN, FAAN, has been sworn in as a member of the AARP Board of Directors. She is among six new board members elected to a six-year term. Disch also serves as a member of the American Academy of Nursing Board of Directors. Margaret Ecklund, MS, RN, CL, CCRN, has succeeded Elizabeth M. Nolan, RN, MS,CS, as chairman of the board of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses Certification Corporation. Suzanne Prevost, RN, PhD, will serve as chair-elect for 2002-03. Judith Fitzgerald Miller, PhD, RN, FAAN, has been appointed interim dean of the College of Nursing at Marquette University. Susan B. Hassmiller, PhD, RN, FAAN, has been awarded the presti- gious Ann Magnussen Award in recognition of her outstanding contribu- tions to strengthen and improve American Red Cross programs and services. It is the highest honor of nursing achievement in the American Red Cross. Hassmiller currently serves as a Board of Governor for the American National Red Cross. • Barbara R. Heller, EdD, RN, FAAN, Dean of the University of Maryland School of Nursing, has been appointed Executive Director of the newly established Center for Health Workforce Development at the University of Maryland Baltimore and Rauschenback Distinguished Pro- fessor, an endowed professorship dedicated to the improvement of nursing and nursing education through research and teaching. Bonnie Jennings, DNSc, RN, FAAN, has been selected as the AAN/ ANF/Institute of Medicine Scholar-in-Residence. In March, 2002, Dr. Jennings retired as a colonel with 32 years of military service. During her final tour of duty, Dr. Jennings worked for the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Afairs as the Deputy Director for Health Program Analysis and Evaluation. Jeanie Kayser Jones, RN, PhD, FAAN, Professor of Gerontological Nursing, Director of the University of California-San Francisco/John A. Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence, has received the 2002 Regional Geriatric Nursing Research Award from the Western Institute of Nursing (WIN) in partnership with the Hartford Institute of Geriatric Nursing, New York University. This award was given in recognition of the substantial and sustained contributions of her research to improve the quality of care of long-term care patients. Madeline Wake, PhD, RN, FAAN, has been appointed the new Marquette University Provost. Dr. Wake has served as an administrator and faculty member at Marquette since 1977. Mary Wakefield, PhD, RN, FAAN, Director, Center for Rural Health, University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences, has been reappointed to the Medicare Payment Advisory Commisssion (Med- PAC). The commission’s 17 members serve three-year terms. Suzanne K. White, MN, RN, FAAN, was recently appointed by Governor Hodges to the South Carolina State Board of Nursing. Carolyn Yucha, RN, PhD, Associate Dean for Research at the Univer- sity of Florida College of Nursing, has been appointed editor of the journal Biological Research for Nursing.
