Questions
What is the limit of application of fully electric vessels and what role will hydrogen as a fuel play?
UBC-MSI Future Ship Workshop - 4th March 2020
It’s all about the mission!
Could we power a container ship from say Shanghai to Vancouver with batteries only?
Yes we could.
Does it makes sense?

Questions

UBC-MSI Future Ship Workshop - 4th March 2020
Hydrogen has its drawbacks. Getting the green hydrogen, which is made from Renewable is the
hard part. Right now most of the hydrogen produced is either ‘grey’ or ‘blue’ (grey being produced
by combustion of fossil fuel, blue being the same but with carbon sequestration)
Also how do you store it? Liquid hydrogen is the best, but cryogenic temperature of -253°C has its
own challenges.
There are other types of fuel out there such as Methanol Fuel Cell, Ammonia Solid Oxide Fuel Cell.
We should not forget 2 things while developing new concepts:
1. What is the true well-to-wheel carbon footprint?
2. Is it better for the environment? (Let’s remember the LNG dreams of a clean fuel, and now the
‘Methane slips’ nightmare).
