O ur athletes continue to compete full-steam in spring contests, even when wet weather plays havoc with contest and practice schedules. Players and coaches in the Metro League spring sports—track, softball, and tennis—are

excited to contribute points toward another win of the coveted Metro League All Sports trophy, which Cougar athletes in all seasons have combined to bring home to 21st Avenue East for an astonishing 10 consecutive years. Meanwhile, our non-Metro spring teams—crew, lacrosse, and Ultimate Frisbee—are just as committed to being highly competi-tive in their own upcoming league and district tournaments; our rowers have their eyes on the Northwest Regional and USRowing National titles.

So please come cheer our teams on as they finish regular-season play and head into May’s post-season competition.

CREW Highlights: April featured tough training for HNA’s rowers in preparation for the Brentwood Regatta this past weekend (April 27–29) on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, where the team brought home the Girls Points title along with 1 gold, 7 silvers, and 5 bronzes.

Standouts: Medaling crews: Gold: High School 8+ A. Silver: High School 8+ B, Varsity 8+, JV 8+, U17 Novice 8+, Varsity 4+, Lightweight 4+, JV 4x+. Bronze: Lightweight 8+, U17 8+, U19 Novice 8+, U19 Novice 4+, JV4+.

Where to see them: This Saturday, May 5, marks the opening day of boating season; HNA crew will compete for the Colin Sykes Cup at 10:38 a.m. Come down to the Montlake Cut to see the action up close! Later this month, the team will look to clinch bids to Youth Nationals at the Northwest Youth Championships Friday–Sunday, May 18–20, in Vancouver, Washington.

Post-Season Matches Next for Spring-Sport Cougars

TRACK & FIELD Highlights: Cougar runners, jumpers, throwers, and vaulters have been busy this spring. The regular-season concludes this Thursday (May 03) at Rainier Beach in a meet against Rainier Beach, Lakeside, and Cleveland.

Standouts: A successful meet at Nathan Hale on April 26 preced-ed a weekend full of invitation-als, including the Bill Harris In-vitational in Federal Way, the Shoreline Invitational, and the Lake Washington Invitational. Julia Causbie ’21 continues her successful season with new per-sonal records in the 200m, 400m, and long jump, and won the 400m event at the Bill Harris Invitational. Sarah Mirkin ’21 is also having a strong first year on the track with recent PRs in the 400m and 800m, and first in the 800m at the Lake Washington Invitational. Emma Velling ’20 (3200m), Bria Stokes ’20 (discus), and Lizzy Hayes ’20 (discus) all had new PRs last week in their respective events; hurdler Addy Havens ’18 continues to drop time in her 100m and 300m events.

Where to see them: Following Thursday’s meet at Rainier Beach, the Metro League Championship meet is Wednes-day, May 9, and Friday, May 11, at the Southwest Athletic Complex. Metro All Comers meet: Thursday, May 10, at North East Athletic Complex. Sea-King District 2 Meet: Wednesday, May 16, and Friday, May 18, at Southwest Ath-letic Complex. State Meet: Thursday, May 24–Saturday, May 26, at Mt. Tahoma High School in Tacoma.

SOFTBALL

Records: Varsity: 12–5 (10–2 Metro)

Highlights: Despite the weather, Cougar softball is on a roll this spring, with exciting wins in April over Roosevelt, Eastside Catholic, Seattle Prep, and Ballard.

Softball Standouts: Pitcher Logan Luebbe ’19 is 9–4 on the mound with 76 strikeouts and leads the team at the plate with a batting average of .513—including a homerun, five triples, and four dou-bles. Also pitching well is Selina Rojas ’19, who is 3–0 with 15 strikeouts. At the plate, Nicole Johnson ’19 has hit four homeruns, four doubles, and has 11 stolen bases. Emily Flora ’19 and Kristina Johnson ’18 have a pair of homeruns each, with Emily hitting two doubles and stealing seven bases, while Kristina has three doubles and nine stolen bases.

Where to see them: Cougar softball finishes the regular season with two away games, first at Roosevelt on Wednesday, May 2, and then Bainbridge on Friday, May 4. The Metro League softball tournament begins May 7 and runs through May 11.

Team Reports: Ultimate, Lacrosse, Golf, Tennis

ULTIMATE FRISBEE Highlights: Cougar Ultimate teams continue to develop in the program’s seventh season. This season, Coaches Molly McKeon and Julie Brooke decided to encourage fluidity between the varsity and JV teams to help connect everyone in the program and reward hard work and growth. Weather has been much better than last year, and with the new fit-ness center in the Mary Herche Pavilion, the team has a back-up plan if fields get rained out.

Standouts: Lyra D'Souza ’19 and Nori Catalano ’19 have used their skills to dominate in games as well as help oth-ers around them get better. Alana Ross ’20 is a steady presence in the handler space, with beautiful throws to the break side. Tally Burke ’19 has shown her ability to adapt mid-game as well as mid-point defensively in order to shut down and make offense harder for whomever she is guarding. Ashley Newton ’21, Mimi Park ’21, and Mimi Morri-son ’21 all have exceptional instincts and athleticism for the game.

Where to see them: Varsity Ultimate plays four more games this season. The first is this Tuesday (May 1) at Lakeside, then Wednesday (May 2) against Franklin. The following week they host Waldorf on Wednesday, May 9, and finish the season at Bainbridge on Thursday, May 10. JV’s season ends against Franklin on Wednesday, May 2.

LACROSSE Record: 3–6

Highlights: An 11-8 victory over Seattle Prep last Wednesday (April 25) buoyed the Cougar lacrosse players, as they continue to develop as a team.

Lacrosse Standouts: Haily Santorsola ’18 leads the defense with 26 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers. Isabella Holmes ’19 has contributed 19 goals and 2 assists, with Emma Cutner ’18 posting 15 goals and 29 ground balls.

Macallister Ballaine ’20 is a strong presence in the midfield with 21 draw controls and 21 ground balls. Sofie Brennan ’20 stepped into the goal-keeping position for the Cougars, and posted an impressive 62% save percentage in a 11-8 win over Seattle Prep.

Where to see them: The season concludes against Ballard today (May 1), and at Kennedy on Thursday (May 3).

GOLF On to District and State! Janine Surge ’19, Grace Whelan ’19, Clara Bertany ’20, Ana Louie ’21, Audrey Do-nahue ’20, and Greta Acarregui ’21 will represent HNA in the Sea-King District 2 golf tournament on Tuesday, May 15, at Riverbend Golf Complex in Kent. The top 25 competitors in District will advance to the State tournament on Wednesday and Thursday, May 22–23, at Indian Canyon Golf Course in Spokane. Good luck, Cougars.

TENNIS Records: Varsity 8–3. JV 8–2

Highlights: Tennis completed the regular season on Friday (April 27) with a 4–1 win over Garfield, and head into the Metro Team Tournament as 4th seed. JV finishes against Cleveland, and have competed well this season with an 8–2 record and a win over the always-tough Lakeside.

Standouts: After finishing 4th at State last year, #1 singles player Anna Miller ’19 has had another impressive season. She heads into the Metro individual tournament as 3rd seed after finishing the regular season with a 7–2 record. #1 doubles players Christine Barton ’18 and Erin Skrobut ’19 finished the regular season with a 6–1 doubles record; Erin had another victory at #1 singles. HNA Basketball Great Erika Johnson Returns to Help Coach Cougars

One of HNA’s all-time top athletes, Erika Johnson ’11, will return to her alma mater this year as Assistant Varsity Basketball Coach under Head Coach Emily McKenzie. Erika led the 2010-11 Cougar basketball team to the WIAA State championship and a perfect, 29-0 record. She was named Gatorade Washington State Player of the Year and a Parade Maga-zine High School All American, and ranked among the nation’s top 25 recruits by Hoop-Gurlz. She was also HNA’s top player the previous two years, when the Cougars finished third and then second at State before taking the title her senior year.

Erika went on to play at the University of California (Berkeley), then transferred to the Uni-versity of North Carolina (Chapel Hill), where she appeared twice in the NCAA Sweet 16 and once in the Elite 8. She was on the ACC Academic Honor Roll, Dean’s List, and twice won the Athletic Director Scholar Athlete Award. Erika graduated from UNC in 2016 with a B.A. in Exercise & Sport Science and a B.F.A. in Studio Art.
