Karen Torres – Pre-K & Kinder Teacher Karen Torres – who joined Dell City ISD this year as the school’s pre-K and kinder teacher – brings almost 25 years of experience to her work here. And while her career has been diverse – she’s worked with ESL and special-education students, in Head Start, elementary and junior-high classrooms – her Dell City job is definitely a new chapter, with new opportunities for growth.

The Dell City School hosts its annual Christmas Program next Wednes-day, Dec. 18 in Cougar Gym – it’s always a heart-warming event, and all commu-nity members are invited to attend. The Christmas Program is only one of many school events planned in the coming days, in the lead up to the holidays and the school’s winter break. Santa will be on-hand for photos the night of the Christmas Program, beginning at 5 p.m.. Then, at 6, the show begins. There will be songs performed by students and staff, from a performance of “Silent Night/ Noche de Paz,” by pre-K and kindergarten students, to a rendi-tion of “Jingle Bell Rock” by the cheerleading corps – to name only two. Guitar teacher Coe Perry and Cougar coach and teacher – and dummer – Joe Czubinski will perform rock-and-roll renditions of holiday classics, a group of staffers – “the Kitchenettes” – will sing “Mi Burrito Sabanero,” and local band the Muletones will play old-time tunes on fiddle, banjo and guitar. Guitar students will play Christmas songs, and the Cougar robotics team will present a light show – “Dark Side of the Yule.” Don’t miss this special occasion! But that’s not it for holiday activities.

El Programa de Navidad es sólo uno de los muchos eventos escolares planeados en los próximos días, antes de las vacaciones de la escuela. Papá Noel estará disponible para las fotos la noche del Programa de Navidad, a partir de las 5 p.m. Luego, a las 6, comienza el espectáculo. Four Cougars Named to All-District Volleyball

Congratulations to four Cougar student-athletes – all members of the Class of 2020 – who were recently selected as “all-district” vol-leyball players. All-district selection honors top competitors, and these Dell City seniors, who played under coaches Chuck Wilson and Trever Czubinski, earned the recognition.

Hunter Wilson – #10 on the Lady Cougar volleyball team – was named to first team all-district. Fellow seniors Kassandra Acosta – #23 – and Maxine Burford – #22 – were named second team all-district. And Emilia Velarde – #5 – received an all-district honorable mention.

Career Fair Turns Cougars’ Eyes toward the Future A big thanks to the area businesses, schools and organizations that came out Dec. 4 for the Dell City School’s College & Career Fair! Students were inspired to envision and plan for the future – and had lots of fun. Thanks also to school Events Coordinator Catrina Wilson, who planned and organized the fair.

Holiday events, continued from page 1 This week – Dec. 9-13 – the school library is “Santa’s Workshop.” Students can do their Christmas shopping, and purchase inexpensive gifts for parents, grandparents and other family members. Students are staffing the “store,” and sales benefits the Student Council. Students and families can also shop and make purchases online – at schoolholidayshop.com – and then pick up their purchases at the library. Come get in the holiday spirit, and support the Student Council! This Friday, Dec. 13, the Dell City PTO hosts a hayride and carol-ing in Dell City. Students, families and community members are invited to meet at the school library at 5:30 p.m. for hot chocolate and cookies, and the hayride begins at 6. Students will tour the town and sing carols, and will also judge Christmas lights at Dell City households. PTO organizers urge Dell Citians to “bundle up and get those singing voices ready!” With an escort and helpers from the Hudspeth County Sheriff’s Office, Santa Claus visits the county’s three school districts each year – and Santa is scheduled to visit the Dell City School Tuesday, Dec. 17, at 1 p.m. Santa and his helpers bring gifts for children of all ages – including those too young to attend school – and all community members are invited to this event as well. On the same day as the Christmas Program – Wednesday, Dec. 18 – the school hosts a Community Christmas Lunch. Parents and family members are invited to join their students for a holiday feast – children 17 and younger eat free, and there is a $5 charge for adults. Elementary lunch will be held from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m., and secondary students dine from 12:35 to 1:18 p.m. Come join students and staff for a special meal! In a festive end to the semester, the school has “dress-up days” during the last week of school before the holidays. Monday, Dec. 16, is “Hat Day” – students are invited to wear a Santa hat. Tuesday, Dec. 17, is “Ugly Sweater Day” – and students and staff can wear sweaters that they’ve made or purchased. Wednesday, Dec. 18, is “Candy Cane Day” – and Cougars are invited to wear red and white. Thursday, Dec. 19, is “Elf on the Shelf Day” – students are encouraged to dress as elves. The school will host a screening of the movie Polar Express, on Friday, Dec. 20 at 9 a.m. (the community is invited to attend), and students are invited to wear their favorite PJs that day. And, last but not least, the Dell City Library hosts a Scholastic Book Fair – with an “Arctic Adventure” theme – Dec. 16-20. Students will receive pamphlets with some of the featured titles this week. Students will write up “wish lists,” and parents and family members are invited to come to the library during the fair to purchase titles from the lists. School Librarian Carolina Coto is busy preparing for the book fair, and she is seeking volun-teers to help out – interested parents and community members can call or stop by the school. The fair will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 16 and 17; from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 18 and 19; and from 8 a.m. to noon Friday, Dec. 20. Books can also be purchased online – to be delivered and picked up during the fair. Parents, families and community members are invited to stop by by the book fair, to support the school – and the love of reading among Dell Valley youth! Students have a half-day of classes Friday, Dec. 20 – school gets out at noon, and the winter break begins. Classes resume Tuesday, Jan. 7 at the regular schedule. Ms. Torres, continued from page 1 “I’ve got classroom management, I’ve got time management – but this is new,” she said. “But it’s also fun. We’re progressing together. Now, all of a sudden they start reading words out, and I think, ‘Well, look at you go!’” Torres’ most recent teaching job was in Arizona – she said the “rigor” and the academic expectations placed on students are higher in Texas than they were there. She said one of the benefits of a small school is that she can walk next door to visit with first- and second-grade teacher Na-taneal Rodriguez – to talk about what he needs and expects from incoming first-graders. Of course, with the youngest students, it’s not all about academic expectations – there are developmental needs as well: letting the children be children, letting them play and explore. Torres 3- and 4-year-olds join kindergarteners for social studies and science lessons – but they also have separate time. While Torres is working with kinder students on reading, teacher’s aide Elsa McCray leads the youngest students in lessons on letters and numbers, and learning to write their names. Torres said McCray is “wonderful,” and that the two work together well. Torres said that, for young students, the more new vocabulary and the more reading they have in their lives, the better. She encourages parents and family members to have conversations with their children, in whatever language is used in the home. “Whenever your family time is – it may not be around the dinner table, but whenever you’re together – ask your child about their day,” she said. “Conversation is key – you build vocabulary that way. Even if we’re not reading books, we can read recipes to children while we’re cooking, or signs as we’re driving.” Torres said she appreciates the support Dell City ISD offers its teachers. Fellow elementary teacher Erika Gamez is an important source of advice, Torres said, and Torres works closely with Tesha Czubinski, the school’s dean of students and instruction. Czubinski is a veteran elementa-ry-school teacher – and Torres said Czubinski is helping her refine her use of “centers,” study areas that students work at in small groups. “There is so much support here,” she said. “It’s a really great school in that way.” One thing that isn’t new for Torres is a rural, small-town environ-ment. Raised in the town of Huckabay, Texas, north of Stephenville, Torres has taught at a number of districts in this state, and in Arizona. Almost all have been small schools – and the rural environment, Torres said, is where she feels at home. She began in education in 1994 – shortly after having the second of her three children. She taught in the tiny communities of Mullin and Priddy, before moving on to a larger district in the town of Dublin. She taught Spanish, and, at Dublin, was an ESL teacher for three years. She found the ESL work rewarding. “I love ESL,” Torres said, “because you see the kids grow.” In 2001, she and her family moved to the town of Dateland, Ari-zona. Her family had operated a dairy in Huckabay, and in Arizona, Torres’ husband worked for Sarah Farms Milk. She learned of an opening for a position at a Head Start preschool program in nearby Sentinel, Arizona – and that began 16 years of work at the school. The school served about 40 students – pre-K through eighth grade. After a year with preschool students in Head Start, Torres became a special-education aide in Sentinel – and went on to “do everything” as an aide at the school, from third-grade social studies instruction to junior-high math. She said her years at the Sentinel school – where there were three grades per classroom – was good preparation for her Dell City job. “I learned a lot,” Torres said. “It’s made this more doable – hav-ing the three different grade levels.” Torres’ three children – and her 2-year-old grandson – live in different parts of Texas, and all are many hours away from Dell City. Torres said the distance from family is the one drawback of the job. But Torres said Dell City ISD is a good fit for her personality, and that working with young children, and having a new professional challenge, is enlivening. “I really like it,” Torres said. “I’m learning, and it’s making me feel young again.”
