With spring in the air, it’s time to pack away the snow boots and roll up your sleeves to get

started on long-awaited home improvement projects.

Everything outside becomes fresh and new in spring — so why not make your home nice and fresh on the inside? It may be too chilly for outdoor projects, so take a weekend to focus on the inside. Then, when it’s time, you’ll be ready to enjoy the fresh air and warmth of spring.

The first step to freshening up is to clean. Use a weekend to focus on the main tasks: the kitchen, bathrooms, and closets.

IN THE KITCHEN: Toss expired items from the refrigerator and the pantry. Wipe down the inside of the fridge with soap and water. Unplug the fridge and give the coils a good dusting. If you don’t have a self-cleaning oven, and want to avoid caustic products such as ammonia, baking soda and diluted vinegar can work wonders. Apply to spills and splatters and let it sit for a few minutes before wiping. “Lighten up” the kitchen by removing excess clutter from countertops.

Spring is more than an annual liaison with mops and brooms. It’s time to savor the fresh feeling of a clean and organized space.

IN THE BATHROOM: Replace dingy shower curtain liners, pitch old toothbrushes, and toss out expired medications. Clean mirrors and polish faucets and handles. Replace worn out washcloths and towels. Old ones become good cleaning cloths.

DE-CLUTTER CLOSETS: While you’re switching out your wardrobe, take stock. If you have clothing that you haven’t worn for a while, consider donating to a charity or start a “dress-up” bin for playtime with the kids. Or, think about having remnants incorporated into a quilt or a throw. “Memory” throws make cherished gifts for graduation, anniversaries, birthdays, weddings, Mother’s Day, etc.

ALL THROUGH THE HOUSE: It’s amazing what a few accessories can do. Revive a room without spending a fortune - add new trim to existing drapes or replace lampshades and rugs. Bring spring indoors with flowers in a bright vase or buy a new piece of art. Visit local consignment shops and thrift stores to find inexpensive decor items.
